An Inspiring Chinese Art
I’d like to share a Chinese art that inspires me — papercutting.
Once, I first saw it at a school exhibition, where the bright red patterns immediately caught my attention. The works showed flowers, animals, and even stories from Chinese legends. I was amazed by the skill and patience required to make each delicate shape.
Papercutting inspires me in many ways. It teaches me to slow down, stay focused, and appreciate the beauty hidden in simple things. Besides, it reminds me of the value of our culture and encourages me to protect it. Through this form of art, I feel more connected to my roots.

参考范文
Then one day, the truth came out. Her teacher called Renny’s mother, and together they sat down with her after school. At first, Renny’s heart raced with panic, and she tried to stick to her story. But when her mother looked at her with disappointment and her teacher waited patiently, her defense crumbled. Tears welled up in her eyes as she told them everything. Instead of anger, her teacher said gently, “Lies only make things worse. The truth, however hard, sets you free.” Her mother added, “We all make mistakes, but what matters is how we fix them.” Renny nodded, beginning to understand.
After admitting everything, Renny felt a mix of shame and relief. That evening, she finished her math assignment honestly, asking for help when she needed it. The next day, she stood before her class and said, “I’m terribly sorry that I have lied about the assignment.” A brief silence followed, and then her teacher smiled and said, “Truth always deserves respect.” Her friend gave her a small nod. From that day on, Renny learned that honesty, though sometimes difficult, never traps you the way lies do. She realized that facing a problem bravely was far better than hiding behind excuses, and she promised herself to choose truth from then on.

Hope Johnson is in Columbus, Ohio, overseeing nine adults while they play in the water during a summer outing. Part of her job as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is to assist people with disabilities with everything from daily tasks to their jobs.
She and the group, whose members she sees as family, meet each week to participate in activities through the Without Walls (WOW) program. Since the start of the program in late 2020, she and the program have helped more than 120 adults in the central Ohio area, establishing a sense of connection between participants and their community.
Nicole Neri, who is in her 20s, says she feels like she’s a part of something when she attends WOW. For the past two years, she has been helping a participant, Mark, who is legally blind. “I help Mark every day,” she says. “She makes sure he’s safe,” Ms. Johnson says.
People are much happier when they have choices and aren’t separated, says Sean Luechtefeld, a vice president with the American Network of Community Options and Resources. He says Ms. Johnson goes above and beyond. “This type of work is incredibly rewarding,” adds Mr. Luechtefeld. “But it can also be incredibly challenging.” Fewer people are becoming DSPs, he says, adding that a decades-old shortage is fueled in part by people feeling undervalued and underpaid.
Lisa Wenzke, a Columbus mother, first met Ms. Johnson earlier this year at a Special Olympics track meet (田径运动会), where the WOW leader was cheering for her participants. Ms. Wenzke was impressed by that commitment. “All I could think was, ‘This is someone I want in my life. This is a wonderful person,’ ” she says. They know her family and, to her, they’re a part of it.
24.What is the purpose of WOW?
A.To improve the look of communities. B.To solve differences among residents.
C.To teach the disabled useful life skills. D.To promote the welfare of the disabled.
25.How has WOW affected Neri?
A.She has earned the favor of participants. B.She has gained a sense of belonging.
C.She has improved her eyesight. D.She has developed interpersonal skills.
26.What does Luechtefeld think of DSPs’ work?
A.It calls for professional training. B.It is more rewarding than challenging.
C.It needs greater social recognition. D.It keeps attracting new applicants.
27.What is Wenzke’s attitude towards Johnson?
A.Favorable. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Skeptical.

Like big-wave surfers, shearwaters (剪水鹱) in the Sea of Japan deliberately head toward powerful and dangerous storms.
When hurricanes strike, most birds either flee or take shelter. After all, these storms can cause massive bird death. But after analyzing wind data and GPS-tracking information from 75 shearwaters, the researchers found that the seabirds sometimes navigate toward the center of hurricanes and remain there tailing the eye for up to eight hours.
The researchers put forward in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that shearwaters do this so they’re not blown ashore, where they are vulnerable to crash landings and preying. The team also found that adult shearwaters handle storms better than juveniles, which lack a “map sense” of where land is.
Swansea University biologist Emily Shepard says she’s in awe of these master fliers, which use long and thin wings to soar across vast stretches of wind-swept ocean. Shepard’s team found that shearwaters went around storms when far out at sea. But when sandwiched between a large storm and land, several instead headed right toward the storm’s eye, passing through some of its fastest winds. “Large waves and high winds are not a problem for these birds,” says Josh Adams, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Western Ecological Research Center.
Scientists had previously tracked other birds moving through cyclones (气旋) , but this is the first time researchers have documented birds appearing to enter storms purposefully and strategically. Despite weighing only as much as a pint of milk, shearwaters “have an inbuilt ability to cope with the strongest storms,” Shepard says, “It's amazing to think that even during hurricanes, which are projected to increase in intensity because of climate change, there will be shearwaters out there.”
Other bird species, meanwhile, must flee the scene or risk drowning.
28.What do the scientists rely on in their study?
A.Historical flying records and weather reports.
B.Satellite images and bird landing records.
C.Wind and real-time location tracking data.
D.Eyewitness accounts from the sailors.
29.What does the passage suggest about the young bird?
A.They have good escaping strategy.
B.They lack a good sense of direction.
C.They can stay in the eye of hurricanes longer.
D.They have strong wings to withstand the wind.
30.Why does the author quote Josh Adams in paragraph 4?
A.To describe the Pacific storms’ uniqueness.
B.To highlight the difficulty of bird research.
C.To emphasize the birds’ strong adaptation.
D.To call for better environmental strategies.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Storm Chasers B.The Eye of the Storm
C.Wind Fighter D.Hurricane Survival Guide

The Arctic, Earth’s northern freezer, is warming nearly four times faster than the global average. One of the clearest signs of this rapid change is the shrinking blanket of sea ice that floats on the Arctic Ocean. Since satellites started watching in 1979, summer sea-ice area has dropped by about forty percent, an area roughly six-times the size of California.
Sea ice is different from land-based ice sheets. It forms when seawater freezes, creating thin plates that can be only a few metres thick. Because ice is lighter than water, it floats and moves with wind and currents, covering the ocean like a bright white cap. That cap performs a vital job: it reflects most of the Sun’s energy back to space, keeping the planet cool. Scientists call this effect “albedo”. When warming temperatures melt the ice, darker ocean water is exposed. Dark surfaces absorb more heat, leading to even more melting — a vicious cycle known as ice-albedo feedback.
Melting sea ice does not directly raise sea level, just as melting ice cubes in a glass do not make the glass overflow. However, the loss of ice weakens entire ecosystems. Polar bears rely on sturdy ice to hunt seals; walruses (海象) rest on ice pieces between feeding dives on the shallow ocean floor. As ice breaks into smaller pieces, these animals must swim longer distances, burning precious energy and sometimes drowning.
On human communities, the changes are mixed. Melting ice opens new shipping routes, cutting travel time between Europe and Asia, but it also threatens the traditions of Indigenous (原住民的) peoples who depend on stable ice for hunting and travel. Moreover, extra heat in the Arctic can disturb weather patterns far away, possibly making winters colder in some regions by shifting the polar jet stream.
Researchers use computer models, underwater robots, and even sensors attached to seals to predict future ice conditions. Their work suggests the Arctic could experience practically ice free summers by the 2050s if greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise. Cutting carbon pollution, monitoring wildlife, and protecting Indigenous knowledge are therefore urgent steps toward slowing the melting.
32.Why is the ice-albedo feedback described as “vicious”?
A.This process helps animals survive.
B.The cycle speeds up further melting.
C.The feedback lowers sea level quickly.
D.It creates new ice sheets over vast areas.
33.What does the author imply about melting sea ice?
A.Swimming distance for animals is reduced.
B.New food sources are created for animals.
C.The global sea level is raised directly.
D.Animals’ energy waste is increased.
34.How does melting sea ice affect human communities?
A.It has both positive and negative effects.
B.It may lead to colder winters in all regions.
C.It mainly brings economic benefits to humans.
D.It destroys the traditional lifestyle of Indigenous peoples.
35.What can be concluded from the researchers’ prediction?
A.Emissions have little effect on Arctic ice.
B.Ice-free summers will come by the 2050s.
C.Robots are the best tool for ice prediction.
D.Cutting carbon can help slow Arctic ice loss.

This summer I came face-to-face with three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and 41 .
Two friends joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway. Since we were all in our seventies, we decided we’d better go while we still could.
On one hike, I found myself on a bridge made of two partly rotten logs, 42 high above rushing rapids. I would never have attempted it without our guide ahead, mouthing 43 words. Fixing my eyes on her boots, I 44 along the shaky logs. Somehow, I made it across, flooded with intense excitement and huge 45 .
Later, after spotting bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises, which soon became a game.
Until suddenly, time stood 46 .
We had just crossed a stream when the guide whispered, “There’ s a bear.” I looked up in 47 and saw not one, but two, about ten meters above us — the mother in front, her baby behind.
48 scared speechless, I couldn’t help noticing how beautiful they looked. I wondered if it would be my 49 memory. As they started towards us, we shouted and waved our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, then slowly 50 . Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, we were asked to bring back a “ 51 ” stick, rock, and leaf to share what would “stick” with us, what “rocked,” and what we would “leaf” behind. The 52 of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind.
Our guide ended by expressing her 53 , praising our positive attitude, and saying she hoped to be like us in another thirty or forty years. Those words warmed my heart and 54 my fear of being aged. Being valued for what we had accomplished felt like winning an Olympic medal — even if just for 55 .

第二节(共10小题;每小题1. 5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或所给单词的正确形式。
In ancient times, people relied heavily on exchanging letters and brief notes for communication. Intellectuals and artists felt that writing or drawing on white paper was far from 56 (full) offering an expression of their thoughts and literary and artistic tastes. Thus, they designed a special type of patterned paper called huajian and decorated it 57 customized motifs (装饰图案) and characters, on smaller-sized sheets.
Scholars commented in their research papers on traditional culture this year 58 huajian represents the highest artistic taste of ancient Chinese intellectuals. From the Tang Dynasty’s poets to Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty and modern literary figures of repute like Lu Xun, they all shared 59 (enthusiastic) for personalized paper art.
Rarely seen 60 (example) of the unique huajian tradition were on show at the Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy. The exhibition displayed colorful, patterned vintage (古 色 古 香 的) paper, selected huajian catalogs, and planks and tools for woodcut printing. The objects 61 (gather) from the collections of eight museums and cultural institutions.
The exhibition follows the evolving aesthetics (美学) of intellectuals and high society, and reflects innovations in papermaking and printing techniques. When not 62 (print) with words, these patterned papers are worthy of appreciation as stand-out miniature paintings.
“As 63 unique form of stationery, huajian paper carries a galaxy of emotions. 64 (it) patterns are like background music on paper, though they cannot be heard. They do not take attention away from the texts, but possess a lingering charm, 65 (remind) people today of the creative artistry and sincerity between the lines,” says the director of the Beijing Fine Art Academy.

Renny was an eleven-year-old girl who liked putting things off. She often delayed her school assignments. Her weekends were usually filled with dreams of hanging out with friends, or staying at her grandparents’ house, where she would enjoy herself and play freely with some of her friends.
One weekend, Renny planned to go to her grandparents’ place. When her mother asked if she had any schoolwork to complete, Renny shook her head and said no, hiding the fact that she had a math assignment due soon. Her mother agreed to drop her off, reminding her to practice her math skills. Renny promised she would study later, but the weekend passed quickly with fun and relaxation.
By the time Monday arrived, she had completely forgotten about the assignment. Walking into the classroom, panic swept over her. When her teacher asked for the assignment, Renny lied that she had forgotten it at home. The teacher simply told her to bring it the next day. Relieved, Renny thought the small lie had solved everything. But when the next day came, she still had not done the work. She made up another excuse, saying her cousin had spilled ink on it. The teacher raised an eyebrow doubtfully, so Renny quickly invented a story about a visiting cousin. Her friend asked how long the cousin was staying, and Renny answered, “Until Saturday,” adding another layer to her lie.
That evening, her mother mentioned that the teacher had called about the missing assignment. Renny insisted she had already submitted it, claiming the teacher must have forgotten. The lies began to grow, each one demanding another to hold them up. Her friend later questioned her about the cousin, and Renny struggled to keep the story straight, nervously saying he had left early.
Renny started to feel trapped. At home, she sensed doubt in her mother’s voice. At school, her teacher’s gaze seemed sharper, and her friend grew distant. The small lie had grown into a web she could not escape.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】17.C 18.A 19.B 20.A
【原文】Good afternoon, I’m Ella. My blog is about clothes for students. I didn’t get many hits at first, but one newspaper wrote something about me and more people started to look at the blog. Then a local TV channel interviewed me for a program. Since then, the blog has developed even faster. So I’m no longer working alone. A photographer agreed to take some shots for the site to better show the clothes. My brother Eden offered to be my model. I also considered hiring a makeup artist. Luckily, Bonnie, my talented friend, helped me. I make sure I include all kinds of clothes to suit a range of tastes for my readers. I try to think about their budgets, too. Most of the clothes I talk about are readily available. As well as showing the latest styles, I also feature classic clothes I’ve found in second-hand shops. Believe it or not, those from the 1920s are the richest sources of ideas for my recent blog posts. Although people enjoyed the clothes from the 1970s most, I also got positive comments about stuff from the 1980s.

【答案】24.D 25.B 26.C 27.A
【导语】讲述了约翰逊投身帮扶残疾人的 WOW 项目,助力残障人士融入社会。这类陪护工作意义重大却辛苦缺人,她热心尽责的态度也收获了众人认可与好评。
【详解】24.细节理解题。根据第二段“She and the group, whose members she sees as family, meet each week to participate in activities through the Without Walls (WOW) program. Since the start of the program in late 2020, she and the program have helped more than 120 adults in the central Ohio area, establishing a sense of connection between participants and their community.(她和这个团体(她将其中的成员视为自己的家人)每周都会相聚,通过WOW项目参与各种活动。自2020年末该项目启动以来,她和该项目已经帮助了俄亥俄州中部地区的120多名成年人,增强了参与者与所在社区之间的联系)”可知,WOW的宗旨是促进残疾人的福利。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“Nicole Neri, who is in her 20s, says she feels like she’s a part of something when she attends WOW.(20多岁的妮科尔·内里表示,每当她参加“WOW”活动时,都会有一种自己是其中一员的感觉)”可知,WOW让内莉有了归属感。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段“Fewer people are becoming DSPs, he says, adding that a decades-old shortage is fueled in part by people feeling undervalued and underpaid.(他表示,如今愿意成为直接支持专业人员的人越来越少。这份职业数十年来一直存在人员短缺问题,部分原因是从业者觉得自身价值得不到认可,且薪资待遇偏低。)”可知,卢特策菲尔德认为WOW的工作需要得到更多的社会认可。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Lisa Wenzke, a Columbus mother, first met Ms. Johnson earlier this year at a Special Olympics track meet (田径运动会), where the WOW leader was cheering for her participants. Ms. Wenzke was impressed by that commitment. “All I could think was, ‘This is someone I want in my life. This is a wonderful person,’ ” she says. They know her family and, to her, they’re a part of it.(莉萨·温泽是哥伦布的一位母亲,今年早些时候,她在一次特殊奥林匹克田径运动会上第一次见到了约翰逊女士。当时,这位 WOW 项目的负责人正在为她的队员加油助威。温兹克女士对这种奉献精神印象深刻。“我所能想到的就是,‘这个人是我想要融入生活中的。这是一个非常出色的女士。’”她说。他们了解她的家人,并且对她而言,他们也是她生活的一部分)”可知,温泽对约翰逊持支持态度。
C
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.C 31.A
根据第二段“But after analyzing wind data and GPS - tracking information from 75 shearwaters, the researchers found that the seabirds sometimes navigate toward the center of hurricanes and remain there tailing the eye for up to eight hours.(但在分析了75只剪水鹱的风数据和GPS追踪信息后,研究人员发现这些海鸟有时会飞向飓风中心,并在那里追踪风眼长达8小时)”可知,科学家在研究中依靠风数据和实时位置追踪数据。
29.细节理解题。依据第三段“The team also found that adult shearwaters handle storms better than juveniles, which lack a “map sense” of where land is.(研究小组还发现,成年剪水鹱比幼年剪水鹱更能应对风暴,幼年剪水鹱缺乏对陆地位置的“地图感”)”可知,幼鸟缺乏良好的方向感。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段““Large waves and high winds are not a problem for these birds,” says Josh Adams, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Western Ecological Research Center.(“对于这些鸟类来说,巨浪和强风都不是问题。”
D
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.D
【导语】文章讲述北极变暖速度远超全球平均水平,海冰消融引发恶性循环,危害极地生物与人类生活,减少碳排放等措施可延缓冰层融化。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第二段“When warming temperatures melt the ice, darker ocean water is exposed. Dark surfaces absorb more heat, leading to even more melting — a vicious cycle known as ice-albedo feedback.(气温升高使海冰融化,深色的海水显露出来。深色表面会吸收更多热量,进而造成冰层进一步融化,这一恶性循环被称为冰反照率反馈。)”可知,该循环会加速冰层融化,因此被称作恶性循环。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段“As ice breaks into smaller pieces, these animals must swim longer distances, burning precious energy and sometimes drowning.(随着冰层碎裂成小块,这些动物必须游更远的距离,消耗宝贵能量,有时甚至会溺亡。)”可知,海冰融化会让动物消耗更多体力。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“On human communities, the changes are mixed. Melting ice opens new shipping routes, cutting travel time between Europe and Asia, but it also threatens the traditions of Indigenous (原住民的) peoples who depend on stable ice for hunting and travel.(对人类社会而言,影响喜忧参半。冰层融化开辟了新航线,缩短了欧亚之间的航行时间;但同时也威胁到原住民的传统生活 —— 他们依赖稳定冰层进行狩猎和出行。)”可知,海冰融化对人类社会兼具积极和消极影响。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Their work suggests the Arctic could experience practically ice free summers by the 2050s if greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise. Cutting carbon pollution, monitoring wildlife, and protecting Indigenous knowledge are therefore urgent steps toward slowing the melting.(他们的研究表明,若温室气体排放持续增加,到21世纪50年代,北极夏季或将几乎无冰。因此,减少碳污染、监测野生动物、保护原住民智慧,是减缓冰川融化的紧迫举措。)”可知,减少碳排放有助于减缓北极冰层消融。

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
