Tom Costello Jr.was once afraid of homeless Americans. That changed seven years ago
after his wife,a volunteer at a homeless shelter,persuaded()him to help with a holiday
dinner for shelter residents.
Tom Costello remembers going to a store and buying socks for the residents. He knew
many of them were in need of clothing. At the shelter,he dropped a pair of socks into a bag
for a woman."She started to cry and told me that nobody had ever given her socks before,"
Costello said. Then she reached out and gave me a hug."
That experience at the shelter helped Costello end his fear of the homeless. It also led
him to set up a group called "The Joy of Sox".The Joy of Sox collects socks from donors
and gives them mostly to shelters in the Philadelphia,Pennsylvania area, where Costello
and his wife Nacy live. But the group has been expanding its reach, now providing socks for
homeless shelters in 21 states and three countries:Mexico,Afghanistan and Uganda.
Why socks?Costello explains that some Americans give food, coats and other clothing
to shelters, but donating socks is not something most people think about. And,he says, socks
are very helpful in keeping people warm in cold weather.A man named Kiwi, who has lived
in homeless shelters, explains that socks are important to people who spend a lot of time
outdoors.Kiwi says most of the time he can find enough food through shelters and soup
kitchens, but socks are much more difficult to get.

Artificial intelligence (Al)plays an important role in the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022
and Asian Para Games. These terms might sound familiar, but how smart are they when
applied to the56 Asian Games venues(场地)?
Their smartness can be found in running the venues with less human labor forces. At the
Huanglong Sports Center,a system called Smart Stadium Brain is built.A 25 square meter
high definition(高情晰度)screen lays in the venue's information center,.which guarantees
a friendly environment for the athletes and audiences.A small screen on each seat is
designed to be at the audience's service.By finger touching, the audience can control it
conveniently to watch and keep contact with the event. What's more, supported by the 5G
technology.
AI also means further protection on environment. At the Fuyang sports Center, although
it has been raining for days, the roof of the venue still remains dry.And the secret lies in its
attractive sky garden. The garden,is not only eye-catching but also useful. It allows the
greening rate of the entire stadium to reach as high as 45%,being energy-saving.Under the
cobblestones(鹅卵石),a recovery system is filtering(过滤)and collecting rainwater for the
venue's water system,and irrigation water.
28.Which of the following can replace the underlined word "guarantee"in Para2?
A.Make sure of.B.Take advantage of.C:Get used to.D.Adapt to.
29.What can we learn from Para 2?
A.Small screen must be supported by the 5 G technology.
B.The stadium is environmentally friendly and advanced but costly.
C.The audience can control small screens on their seats easily.
D.Their smartness of AI will replace workers
30.How does the roof of the venue keep dry while it's raining?
A.By collecting rainwater system of the sky garden.
B.By getting the rainwater out.
C.By saving energy.
D.By improving the greening rate.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.More Connections with Smart Devices.
B.Smart Asian Games Venues with High-tech.
C.Asian Games with Artificial Intelligence.
D.A Sports Center with Smart Stadium Brain.

Beavers may be far more important to the climate than previously thought.A new
international study led by researchers at the University of Birmingham suggests these
animals can turn river systems into powerful carbon dioxide (CO2)sinks by reshaping
wetlands and waterways.
The study is the first to measure both the carbon released and captured by beavers in
wetlands. It focused on a stream in northern Switzerland where beavers have lived for more
than ten years.Researchers found that wetlands made by beavers stored carbon at a much
4
4/8
higher rate than nearby areas without beavers. In thirteen years, the wetland collected about
1,194 tonnes of carbon, equal to 10.1 tonnes of CO2 per hectare each year.
Beavers build dams (that slow down water, trap soil, and create new wet areas.
These changes help streams store more carbon.Dr.Joshua Larsen, the main author, said that
beavers not only change the land but also control how CO2 moves in these areas. This study
shows a new way nature itself can help fight climate change.
Over recent decades, beavers have returned to rivers across Europe.By making dams,
they flood stream sides, create wetlands, change the flow of water, and trap both natural and
human materials, including carbon. This reshapes the ecosystem and increases the carbon
stored in the land.
The study also looked at seasonal changes. In summer, low water levels can expose
soil and release more CO2 temporarily. However, over the whole year, the wetland stores a
large amount of carbon in soil, plants, and deadwood.Deadwood alone accounts for almost
half of all carbon stored in the area.
Researchers estimate (that if beavers return to all suitable floodplains in
Switzerland, their wetlands could reduce 1.2-1.8%of the country's yearly carbon emissions
()As beaver populations grow, more research will help us understand how these
animals can affect future ecosystems and long-term carbon storage.
32.What did the study in Switzerland show about beavers?
A.They change the temperature of the water.
B.They increase the number of fish in rivers.
C.They reduce rainfall in surrounding areas.
D.They can help rivers store more carbon.
33.How do beavers affect the amount of carbon in wetlands?
A.They prevent floods from reaching forests.
B.They remove plants to let more carbon escape
C.They change water flow and block materials.
D.They reduce soil in wetlands to lower carbon
34.What can be inferred about beavers from the text?
A.They are in need of human help.
B.They have a side effect on the land
C.They mostly harms other animals.
D.They benefit the local ecosystem.
35.Which would be the most suitable title for the text?
A.How Beavers Build Dams and Wetlands
B.Beavers and Carbon Storage in Wetlands
C.The Life and Habits of European Beavers
D.How Seasonal Changes Happen in Swiss

It was a beautiful spring morning in Falmont Primary School.Surrounded by green
trees and blooming flowers, the five-floor teaching building looked bright and
lively. The sunlight flooded in,warming the students and their wooden desks.High in the
tree,a group of tiny birds chirped ()happily on the branches, their beautiful calls
bringing the whole school to life.
In Classroom 103 on the 4th floor,Mrs.Brown was teaching a geography lesson."The
Earth's plates move very slowly,"she explained,pointing to a dynamic picture."When they
push against each other, earthquakes can happen.Remember, when an earthquake hits,
calmness is the first step to self-rescue.Next you should find someplace to hide..."Such
earthquake safety lessons were held every month and earthquake safety procedures were
practiced twice each term at Falmont.
"Again! We have never experienced an earthquake before. Is this really necessary?"
Tom whispered to his deskmate Lisa."You never know."Lisa continued taking notes
attentively.
Feeling bored,Tom looked out of the window.Suddenly,he noticed the birds flying
away as if something terrible was happening. Then,a strong and loud noise, like a train made
of thunder came from the north. It started with a slight shake. But the next second, the entire
classroom shook heavily, and dust rained down from the ceiling. The lights in the classroom
moved from side to side wildly, and the deafening crash of breaking glass rang out.
"Earthquake!"Lisa shouted, with obvious fear in her voice. On hearing Lisa's words,
Tom jumped to his feet, crying and trying to rush out.Fear spread quickly among the class
-some students stood still in their seats, their faces turning pale with terror;some students
cried out, covering their ears with their hands.Everyone seemed to be out of control.

The City I Desire to Visit
The city I desire to visit is Beijing. As we all know, Beijing is our capital. There are many famous universities and many places of interest, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Old Summer Palace and so on. Besides, it is also an international city where you can see so many foreigners from all over the world.
The reason why I want to visit Beijing is that I want to climb the Great Wall. By climbing it, I can feel its greatness. Moreover, it is an ancient city where walking along the streets I can feel a strong sense of culture.
Really I hope one day I can visit Beijing.

“Remember what we have learned?” Mrs.Brown tried to calm the students down. She stopped Tom and quickly observed around as she shouted clear instructions: “Drop down onto your hands and knees! Cover your head and neck with your hands, arms or hard objects! Hide under your desks and hold on to their legs tight!” Inspired by her calmness, the panicked students gradually followed her words. Meanwhile, Mrs.Brown quickly opened the classroom door in case it became damaged and could not open. There were loud crashes of glass breaking and things falling to the ground, but the students remained still and waited calmly and quietly.
The moment the shaking stopped, Mrs.Brown realized it was the best time to escape. She signaled to her students to form two orderly lines as practiced, exiting the classroom and moving swiftly downstairs, covering their heads with their hands. Within two minutes, the whole class went downstairs and rushed to the playground. Soon students from other classes arrived too. All were safe and sound. The children could no longer hold back their emotions. They hugged each other, laughing and crying. All children, including Tom, finally understood the knowledge they learned in class and the seemingly boring practices had all turned into the power to protect their lives when danger struck.

1. 【原文】M: Excuse me. Is there a flower shop nearby?
W: Yes. Do you see the bakery over there? Next to it, you’ll see a red umbrella. That’s where the flower shop is.
2. 【原文】W: Are Tom and Anne getting married in June?
M: No. They have rescheduled their wedding for late July. After the wedding, they’ll go on their honeymoon.
3. 【原文】W: Which supermarket do you usually go to?
M: I always shop at Brown’s.
W: A new supermarket has opened in this area. It’s much bigger.
M: I know, but it’s always packed with people.
4. 【原文】W: Jack, Mrs. Palmer wants us in her office.
M: Right now? For what?
W: She wants us to meet the new sales manager.
5. 【原文】M: I’d like to summarize what it is we’re looking for.
W: Good.
M: Basically, we want the printing cost to come down by 15%.
W: Well, it’s really hard for us to offer such a price cut.
6.【原文】W: Happy new year, Mike!
M: Happy new year!
W: Have you made any resolutions?
M: I’d like to eat less and exercise more this year. Three hamburgers a day is probably not a good idea.
W: Yeah, many people hope to be healthier in the new year. You always see a lot of people start joining gyms. I heard some kind of statistic that gyms are always 50% more crowded in the month of January. And then usually by February, it’s back to normal.
M: It’s so true. It’s always difficult to keep up the workout routine.
7.【原文】M: Fenny, if you’re up in London tomorrow, I’ve got two tickets for the American Ballet Theatre. Would you like to come?
W: Thanks, but I’ll be busy tomorrow.
M: No problem. Maybe another time. Do you have plans?
W: Yes, I’ll meet Katie at the Olympia Exhibition Centre. Remember her? We went to the same art school. Some of her designs are going to be exhibited there. She’s hoping one of the big clothes companies might buy them.

W: Yeah, she is aiming high. But she has what it takes to get there.
8.【原文】W: People are increasingly concerned about online security. And many experts are now offering advice on how to use smartphones safely.

W: Let me ask you first. How long have you kept your phone on so far?
M: For over a year now. It’s not that I’m addicted to it or have important calls, but I need the alarm to wake me up every morning.
W: Yeah, but that’s where the risk is. According to experts, we should switch our phones off and on once a day as a security measure. It helps close the applications running in the background and stop data collection processes we’re not aware of.
M: Sounds reasonable. Do we switch the phone off and switch it back on immediately?
W: Well, better wait for a few minutes.
M: When do you usually do that?
W: I do it every night before going to bed.
9.【原文】W: Welcome to History of the English language. Since the class is quite small, I plan to run this course as a discussion. But since part of your grade depends on participation, I encourage you to come to class.
M: Professor Moore?
W: Yes?
M: Could you tell us more about the assessment of the course?
W: Certainly. In addition to your participation in class, which accounts for 10%, there will be a midterm test, 20%; a final exam, 30%; and a research paper, 40%. Any questions?
M: Do we have any reading assignments?
W: Yes. I believe you’ve all got your textbook. You have to finish reading assigned chapters before each class. Apart from that, there’s a list of books that you’re required to read. Now let’s have a close look at it.
10【原文】W: Hello, everybody. Thanks for your consistent support for our weekly meeting — New Books Sharing. Today, we’ve invited Dr. Caspar Melville, lecturer from the University of London. Dr. Melville started out as a music journalist for a black music magazine called Blues and Soul. In 1992, he moved to San Francisco and founded a jazz magazine named On the One with some friends. They did a really good job, though there was not a lot of money in it. In 1997, he moved back to London and started teaching, and made the decision to find another way to write about music. He grew up in London. He feels that the music in London clubs has formed him. But unfortunately, it has been seriously undervalued by the academic world. In black music studies, jazz has received great attention. But dance music has been largely ignored. His book, It’s a London Thing, is meant to change that situation. So let’s welcome Dr. Melville to share with us his ideas in the book.
