四.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Farihah Choudhury, a public health expert based just outside London, remembers her early efforts to live a sustainable lifestyle. “I started with counting all of the plastic bags that came into my house,” she explains, sharing her strict low-to-zero-waste methods.
Choudhury studied environmental science as a university student, and it was through her degree course-the global health modules, specifically-that an interest in sustainable living was excited. “I’d always been aware of the environment but I hadn’t really understood the facts and numbers behind it until I took the course, and then I was determined (下定决心的) to spring into action,” she says.
It is her Bangladeshi cultural background that encourages her to stick to the low-waste lifestyle. “Bangladesh has been quite a poor country. And so, one thing that I was always brought up with was the idea of frugality (节俭). That was something that was already part of my head because when I was young, people around me kept saying, ‘You have to be frugal; you have to make things go further.’”
While she would “never count plastic bags ever again”, she has practiced other simple but effective techniques for changing her consumer habits and for helping others make the same changes her family made-a “two-out, one-in” system when buying second-hand clothes. She also brings her own containers to a coffee shop or restaurant. And she suggests buying in large packaging (包装), which can help to reduce the amount of packaging waste that you create.
According to a report published last year by Women’s Wear Daily, #zerowaste got more than 4.7m uses on social media that year, making it one of the fastest-growing and widely used sustainability-related hashtags (话题标签) on the Internet.
46. How did Choudhury practice a sustainable lifestyle at first?
A. By eating as little meat as possible.
B. By paying attention to plastic bags.
C. By saying no to disposable chopsticks.

B. Articles on sustainability she read online.
C. The degree course she took at her university.
D. Zero waste methods she learned from environmental science.
48. What does Choudhury say about frugality?
A. It has hardly been accepted in London.
B. It is a deep-seated idea in her mind.
C. It sometimes goes against her lifestyle.
D. It has become out of date in Bangladesh.
49. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How Choudhury reduces waste as a consumer.
B. Why it is difficult to change people’s lifestyles.
C. How Choudhury looks at a sustainable lifestyle.
D. Why it is necessary to protect Bangladeshi culture.
50. What is the best title for the text?
A. Small actions can make a big difference B. Reusing is the answer

In August, University of Alberta students successfully sent an experiment into space from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The experiment, called the PEPPER-X project, is designed to study the interaction between space radiation (辐射) and the Earth. The team, made up of undergraduate and graduate students, spent 16 months preparing for the launch (发射) as part of NASA’s RockSat-X program. “This experiment was almost entirely built and tested by students,” explained project manager Erik Halliwell, a graduate student in the Faculty of Engineering.
For Halliwell, being a project manager on PEPPER-X provided important leadership opportunities. “It’s been really nice to work with people with different levels of experience. I have people who mentor (指导) me in my professional journey, and I was able to be that person for somebody else-to be the mentor that I would have wanted.”
Joyce Winterton, Senior Advisor from NASA, expressed what a pleasure it was having the team from Alberta participate in RockSat-X. “The PEPPER-X project team showed their professionalism throughout the process. The members of this team will be a great addition to the aerospace workforce.” Winterton said.
With a project like PEPPER-X, there are engineering objectives (目标) and there are science objectives. “The mission of this project is to build instruments that can function in space. But the purpose of training the students is for them to develop the skills needed to join the Canadian workforce in aerospace,” Halliwell said. “So we need to build the instruments, and we also need to train students. We did both and we nailed it.”
Looking ahead, the team is currently working through analyzing (分析) the data, which will take weeks or even months to fully process. They will then take the lessons learned and apply them as they develop similar instruments for a mission launching in 2027.
51. What do we know about the PEPPER-X project?

A. Developing interest in space. B. Learning good leadership.
C. Getting workplace experience. D. Building self-confidence.
53. What can we say about Winterton from her words?
A. She expressed great expectation of RockSat-X.
B. She valued international teamwork in space exploration.
C. She felt pleased to be the mentor at the University of Alberta.

54. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined part “nailed it” in paragraph 4?
A. Retired. B. Appeared. C. Succeeded. D. Changed.
55. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The team’s next step in analyzing data and preparing for a future mission.
B. The challenges the team faced during the PEPPER-X launch.
C. The importance of teamwork in completing the project.
D. The role of NASA in supporting student projects.

From Braille to earmuffs, every day we use great inventions dreamt up by young people. And in the 21st century, young inventors continue to bring new inventions into our lives.
Fionn Ferreira was a science and water sports lover. When he discovered the harmful impact of microplastic pollution on water, his passions connected. Aged 19, he invented a magnetic liquid (磁性液体) called ferrofluid. When added to water, it sticks to microplastics, allowing more than 85% of harmful microplastics to be removed from the water.
Young inventors like Ferreira are transforming our world. And in classrooms around the world sit the inventors of the future. So how can teachers support these young inventors in their classrooms?
“Teachers can encourage young people to bring out their inventive potential (潜能) by delivering lessons that connect with the real issues which inspire them,” says Maddy Kavanagh, Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize program manager at Nesta Challenges. “This can include climate change, living healthier lives, looking after an ageing population or clean transport.”
Invention isn’t as simple as having one bright idea. The courage to try, fail and keep going is important to invention. “Help students stay confident when things get challenging,” says Heather Picov, CEO of Apps for Good. “Failing and trying again is part of the problem-solving process.”
Inventions need protection. Intellectual property rights (知识产权) allow young inventors to get recognized as the creator of their ideas or products. Too often, intellectual property is either left out of lessons or the focus is on how students can stay out of trouble; for example, by avoiding breaking copyright rules around film or music. Young people need to learn about intellectual property as a tool to protect their creations.
With the knowledge, skills and confidence they need, young people can transform the world. And when the creative spark (火花) shines, everybody can embrace the brilliance of life-changing inventions.
56. Why does the author mention Ferreira?
A. To stress the value of young inventors.
B. To compare inventors from different ages.
C. To show technical progress in the 21st century.
D. To reflect students’ views on environmental protection.
57. What is Kavanagh’s suggestion for educators?
A. Teaching students real-world rules.
B. Encouraging students to embrace failure.
C. Connecting students with real challenges.
D. Developing students’ skills in personal relations.
58. What quality does Heather Picov stress in paragraph 5?
A. The desire for perfection.
B. The determination to keep going through failure.
C. The ability to avoid all risks.
D. The courage to seek help from others.
59. What is the author’s attitude towards learning about intellectual property in class?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Thankful. D. Supportive.
60. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What role teachers can play in students’ development
B. How to help young inventors find their creative spark
C. Invention education prepares students for the future
D. Meet young talents in the 21st century
五.阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Andrew Brock was looking through job ads last year looking for a new adventure, but he never thought it would take him to the Australian Antarctic (南极洲) Division at Mawson Station. Looking for a “change of pace (节奏)” from his job with a southern New South Wales council, he decided to apply.
Now halfway through a 14-month task as an expeditioner (探险队员), Mr. Brock is focusing on renewing the station’s main accommodation building, known as the “red shed.” “We’re now working on project renewals for all the bedrooms,” he said. He likens his job to space travel, noting, “There are similarities between ourselves and astronauts.”
As Mawson Station’s fire chief, Mr. Brock is also fixing two of the station’s three water containers. Although winter has passed, temperatures still range from-32 to-5 degrees Celsius. “I never thought I would adapt to such extremes of temperature, but I have,” he said. The cold affects equipment, especially batteries. “We are in the age of cordless (无线的) tools, so we just have lots of them,” he noted.
Mr. Brock and his teammates stay in regular contact with their families, but life at Mawson Station can make them feel cut off from the outside world. “You’re onsite 24/7, so at the end of the day, though you may not be on the job, you have to be ready to deal with any emergency,” he explained. So the job is kind of demanding.
His time in the Antarctic has deepened his appreciation for environmental efforts. “Every expeditioner appreciates the quietness and beauty of the place, and they don’t want to mess it up,” he said. He has seen various animals, like Weddell seals, emperor penguins, and various whales, and hopes to see an orca (虎鲸) before returning to Australia in January. He enjoys his free time with fellow expeditioners, playing darts and watching movies. Also, when the weather is good, they organize “jollies”, which are short trips unrelated to work.
