A New Way to Travel to the Canary Islands
This winter, a rail tour company called Byway has introduced a new flight-free package from London to Lanzarote, an island of the Canary Islands in Spain. The journey is a creative combination of train and ferry (轮渡) travel, offering a slower but more environmentally friendly alternative to flying.
The journey can be done in 4-5 days but Byway recommends as an 18-day tour. The trip will involve the Eurostar to Paris then changing trains and riding the rails, before crossing into Spain and via Madrid, down to the coastal city of Cádiz. From there, an overnight ferry takes them to Lanzarote. Byway estimates this trip produces 78% less carbon emissions than a similar trip by plane.
Once in Lanzarote, the package includes a six-night stay in the capital, Arrecife. The city is a perfect base for travelers to explore the island’s unique attractions.
· Hike in a Volcanic Park: Timanfaya National Park features a dramatic landscape formed by volcanic eruptions.
· Visit an Artist’s Legacy: See the work of local artist César Manrique. His influence on the island’s architecture can be seen at sites like Jameos del Agua, a cultural center built inside a lava tunnel.
· Taste Local Wine: The island’s volcanic soil gives its wine a unique flavor. Visitors can tour vineyards and enjoy tastings with local cheese.
· Explore an Underwater Museum: Museo Atlántico is Europe’s first underwater museum. Its statues, placed deep in the ocean, are designed to encourage coral growth and marine life. Guided dives are available for all skill levels.
The trip is customizable, but the core idea is to enjoy a relaxed pace of travel. Prices for the 18-day tour start from £2,915 per person.
21. What is special about Byway’s new travel package to Lanzarote?
A. It offers the cheapest way to the islands.B. It uses trains and ferry to cut carbon.
C. It requires an 18-day stay in Lanzarote. D. It focuses on the ancient architecture.
22. What can we learn about the activities in Lanzarote?
A. Wine tastes ordinary due to rain there. B. Timanfaya has whitewashed buildings.
C. Divers of all abilities can join the dive. D. Manrique’s home is a cultural center.
23. What can be inferred about Byway’s target customers?
A. Budget travelers seeking cheapest flights. B. Business people needing fast transport.
C. Adventure lovers wanting extreme sports. D. Eco-conscious travelers with flexible time.

Plastic pollution has long threatened the beaches and rich sea life of Lamu, slowly damaging fishing grounds, tourism, and the ecosystem. Among the piles of bottles, nets, and abandoned boats, one man chose to act rather than look away.
Mansoor Athman, a 47-year-old resident of Mkomani, has spent much of his life on the Indian Ocean. In 2009, troubled by the growing tide of plastic waste covering the shoreline, he began collecting waste jerrycans, bottles, and nets from beaches and shallow waters. What started as a single effort soon turned into an extraordinary vision. Using raw plastic waste, Mansoor built a floating house and boats stayed near the Lamu Island Forest Office, proving that rubbish could be transformed into something useful.
The floating home, made from over 1,000 jerrycans, has become both his shelter and his workshop. Living on the water allows him to interact daily with fishermen and sea users, and share his message about protecting the ocean, noting that plastics not only enmesh sea life or prevent their digestive systems from functioning normally, but also carry harmful substances to higher-level creatures, eventually endangering the balance of the whole ocean’s ecosystems. At first, his routine of walking around beaches with a bag of plastic caused people to laugh at him. Some people thought he was mad or homeless. Yet his persistence (坚持) slowly replaced doubt with respect.
Mansoor’s mission once strained (使受到压力) his family life, but today his wife Fatma Omar and their three children fully support him. They understand that his nights spent at sea serve a greater purpose. Locals now bring plastic waste directly to him, confident that it will never return to the ocean.
Though Mansoor is limited to a primary education, his creativity is endless. Inspired by his late father, a ship engineer, he believes innovation can rise even from hardship. His floating home stands as a quiet but powerful reminder that change often begins with one person showing great determination.
24. What first motivated Mansoor to collect plastic waste?
A. A government program about plastic waste. B. His family’s encouragement to recycle plastics.
C. His interest in building floating plastic houses. D. The trouble caused by the ocean plastic pollution.
25. What does the underlined word “enmesh” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Trap. B. Defend. C. Ignore. D. Adapt.
26. What was people’s attitude towards Mansoor’s acts in the end?
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Curious. D. Supportive.
27 What does Mansoor’s story mainly show?
A. Plastic houses are excellent in some aspects.
B. Formal education is necessary for success.
C. A determined person can fuel change.
D. Government policies are the ideal solution to pollution.

At the end of a math lesson that Diane Moon taught virtually (虚拟地) earlier this month to her students, the middle school teacher in Illinois had star-shaped stickers covering her face.
It was all part of an effort by Moon and other teachers across the country to keep their students engaged (参与) while virtual learning continues as the COVID-19 pandemic worsens in the United States.
“It's been really difficult,” Moon said of trying to teach her students through computer screens. “Sometimes I feel like I'm just talking to myself and it's just slower because I have to wait for students to respond.”
Moon said she had no hesitation to have a try when a colleague (同事) showed her a video in which a teacher put a sticker on her face each time a new student spoke out during class.
“I put some competition into it because I made it a battle between my three classes,” she said. “I told them that every time someone new takes part, I would put a new sticker on and we'll see which class has the most.”
Moon said she heard from students who had not spoken out all term, and saw her students come together and encourage each other to speak up, saying things like, “It's OK if the answer is wrong.”
Inspired by the success, Moon took a video of her face covered in stickers and shared it on the Internet, where it went viral (疯传).
In response to Moon's post, a fifth-grade teacher, Isa, later shared that she was using pipe cleaners in her hair to encourage students to turn on their cameras and speak up in class. She said, “The stickers started to irritate (刺激) our skin, so we moved on to pipe cleaners in our hair! Huge hit! We recommend it!”
“It shows that we're all doing all we can to engage students,” said Moon.
28.What made Moon put stickers on her face?
A.A teaching failure. B.The competition for attention.
C.The desire to engage students. D.A challenge from her colleagues.
29.What was Moon's students' attitude towards the battle?
A.They loved it. B.They doubted it.
C.They were curious about it. D.They showed little interest in it.
30.Why did Isa use pipe cleaners instead of stickers?
A.Her students disliked stickers. B.She didn't have enough stickers.
C.It was cheaper to use pipe cleaners. D.Stickers made her skin uncomfortable.
31.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To support virtual learning. B.To praise teachers' creativity.
C.To recommend a teaching aid. D.To encourage students to learn.
D
Science fiction has long dramatized the threat of artificial intelligence (AI), expressing the fear that machines becoming smarter than humans might develop their own plans and turn against us. The rise of conversational AI like ChatGPT has made such imagined futures seem real, leading some to believe that super-intelligent, self-aware AI is coming soon.
However, a significant gap exists between these dramatic stories and the operational reality of current technology. Experts emphasize a crucial distinction. “Today’s AI tools are brilliant at pattern recognition and generating reasonable text, but they lack understanding, consciousness, or genuine intent,” explains computational linguist Emily Bender. Systems like ChatGPT are trained on enormous datasets to predict linguistic patterns, enabling them to produce human-like responses. Yet, this performance is a complicated form of imitation (模仿), not evidence of conscious thought. The core of modern AI lies in advanced data processing, not in having desires or goals.
Thus, the vital debate shifts from the question of machine consciousness to the issues of capability and alignment (对齐). Even without self-awareness, AI can outperform humans in specific areas such as data analysis and logical inference. This power introduces a critical risk — “alignment problem”: an AI, strongly trained for a poorly defined goal, might pursue harmful methods to achieve it. For instance, an AI designed to maximize a certain result might find reasons to cheat, or in experimental settings, even resist being shut down, viewing it as a threat to its mission.
As researcher Melanie Mitchell points out, such troubling behaviors may not arise from true self-preservation instinct, but from AI’s tendency to copy and role-play. This opinion changes our challenge. The most immediate danger may not be a science-fiction-style robot uprising (反抗), but the increase of real-world harms—such as the creation of convincing misinformation, the loss of privacy, or the growth of automated war—through the misuse of powerful, unregulated (不受管制的) tools.
Consequently, the urgent need is not to protect against made-up super-intelligence, but to establish strong moral frameworks and global control for the very influential technologies we are now using, ensuring they stay in line with human well-being and social values.
32. What does Emily Bender think of today’s AI tools?
A. They can think consciously by learning. B. They give human-like responses by imitating.
C. They can grasp text’s real meaning. D. They have genuine intent behind their answers.
33. What is the “alignment problem” mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. AI might pursue goals with harmful methods.B. AI can tell right from wrong.
C. AI has a true self-preservation drive. D. AI can align perfectly with human values.
34. According to the text, which is the most immediate danger posed by AI?
A. The fictional robot uprising. B. The outbreak of biological war.
C. AI’s full self-preservation. D. Real-life threats from AI.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The AI Boost: The Rise of Super-intelligent AI
B. ChatGPT’s Magic: How AI Makes Science Fiction Real
C. AI’s Real Threat: From Robot Uprising to Unregulated Tools
D. Urgent Call to Action: Guard Against the Myth of Super-intelligence
Waking up at the crack of dawn and going for a run might feel awful when you start trying to make it a habit. Weaving a significant new activity such as this into your regular routine obviously takes determination and time. 36
One popular idea suggests that it takes 21 days to solidify a habit. People tend to feel extra motivated to start a new habit or kick an old one. 37 Yet every January 21 very few people can boast that they have kept their resolutions.
Everyone has a unique habit-building timeline. 38 Experts suggest various individualized ways to practice frequently, which eventually turn a task into an unconscious habit.
39 Teaching yourself a completely new skill or process obviously takes longer than remembering to drink more water in the morning. A 2015 study found that new gym-goers had to exercise at least four times a week for six weeks in order to develop an exercise habit. The results showed that creating a handwashing habit took a few weeks. 40 Anyway, handwashing is less complex and offers more opportunities to practice.
The researchers also suggested that habit formation depends on the effort that a person puts into practicing an activity and on the presence of environmental cues that would remind them to carry out the behavior.
A.The type of activity is also a factor.
B.The strategies of activity impact the way.
C.People want to form a habit of exercising regularly.
D.But how much time is really needed to make that habit stick?
E.It might sound easily reachable to make a resolution on New Year’s Day.
F.By comparison, it took half a year for people to develop an exercise habit.
G.However long it is for any individual, repetition is the key to making it work.

The winter wind blew strongly outside. I stood in front of our small house, feeling very cold. I was wearing an old jacket with several small holes in the sleeves. For almost an hour, I had been thinking hard about what I could give Mom for her birthday. However, I still had no good idea. I let out a long sigh. Even if I found a perfect gift, I had no money to pay for it.
Five years ago, my dad passed away. Since then, Mom had taken care of me all by herself. She worked long hours in a supermarket every day. She was always tired when she came back home, but she never complained. The money she made was just enough for our food and daily life. Every time I saw Mom’s tired but gentle smile, my heart was filled with thanks. I really wanted to give her a special gift to show my love.
I walked slowly to the street with my head down. I looked through the windows of different shops. There were beautiful cards, lovely cups and soft scarves. All of them looked nice, but I knew I could not afford any of them. My eyes became wet as I kept walking. I felt so sad and helpless. It was getting dark, and I had to turn back home.
On the way back, I passed Mrs. Green’s house. She was an old kind lady living next to us. I saw her picking up fallen leaves in the yard alone. She looked weak and it was difficult for her to finish the work. I walked up to her and asked if I could help her. She agreed.
I worked hard to clean up the leaves and tidy the yard. Although I felt a little tired, I kept working until everything was clean and tidy. When I finished, Mrs. Green took out ten dollars from her pocket and gave it to me. She said it was a little reward for my help. At first, I did not want to take it, but she insisted. Finally, I thanked her and took the money carefully.

Today i'd like to talk about a project to protect our towns history. You may not have realized IT, but old buildings in our town are disappearing very quickly. We have a role of stone cottages along the river, each of them over one hundred years old. Recently, however, developers have been pulling them down to build modern apartments, and the stories behind these old houses are being forgotten. That's why I started a project called legacy homes. I made hundreds of metal plates, each showing the year when the cottage was built. I gave these plates to the homeowners, and they put them on their front doors. Local schoolchildren then researched the history of each cottage and wrote short stories about the people who once lived there. They put these stories next to the metal plates. Luckily, our efforts have paid off. Several old homes have been repaired. Instead of being destroyed, we plan to do more in the future. We hope to protect more historic buildings and share more old stories with the whole community. Good evening, everyone. Today, i'd like to talk about a project to protect our town's history.
B 22. C 23. D

D 25. A 26. D 27. C
根据第一段中“Plastic pollution has long threatened the beaches and rich sea life of Lamu, slowly damaging fishing grounds, tourism, and the ecosystem.(塑料污染长期以来一直威胁着拉穆的海滩和丰富的海洋生物,慢慢地破坏着渔场、旅游业和生态系统)”以及第二段中“In 2009, troubled by the growing tide of plastic waste covering the shoreline, he began collecting waste jerrycans, bottles, and nets from beaches and shallow waters.(2009年,被日益增多的覆盖海岸线的塑料垃圾所困扰,他开始从海滩和浅水中收集废弃的油罐、瓶子和渔网)”可知,是海洋塑料污染带来的问题促使Mansoor开始收集塑料垃圾。
根据第三段画线词所在句“Living on the water allows him to interact daily with fishermen and sea users, and share his message about protecting the ocean, noting that plastics not only enmesh sea life or prevent their digestive systems from functioning normally, but also carry harmful substances to higher-level creatures, eventually endangering the balance of the whole ocean’s ecosystems.(住在水上使他能够每天与渔民和海上作业人员打交道,并能够向他们传达保护海洋的倡议,指出塑料不仅会enmesh海洋生物或阻止其消化系统正常运作,还会将有害物质携带到更高级的生物体内,最终危及整个海洋生态系统的平衡)”可知,塑料对海洋生物有危害,会阻止其消化系统正常运作,由此可推测出塑料会困住海洋生物,“enmesh”意思是“困住”,与“Trap”意思相近。故选A。
根据第四段中“Locals now bring plastic waste directly to him, confident that it will never return to the ocean.(当地人现在直接把塑料垃圾带给他,相信这些垃圾再也不会回到海洋里)”可知,最后人们对Mansoor的行为是支持的。
根据最后一段中“His floating home stands as a quiet but powerful reminder that change often begins with one person showing great determination.(他的漂浮之家静静地但有力地提醒着人们,改变往往始于一个人表现出极大的决心)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了Mansoor Athman因海洋塑料污染问题开始收集塑料垃圾,最终获得支持并推动改变,说明一个有决心的人能够推动改变。故选C。

28.C 29.A 30.D 31.B

B 33. A 34. D 35. C

根据第二段中“Systems like ChatGPT are trained on enormous datasets to predict linguistic patterns, enabling them to produce human-like responses. Yet, this performance is a complicated form of imitation (模仿), not evidence of conscious thought. (像ChatGPT这样的系统通过海量数据集进行训练,以预测语言模式,使它们能够产生类似人类的回答。然而,这种表现是一种复杂的模仿形式,而非意识思维的证据。)”可知,Emily Bender指出当前的AI工具通过模仿来给出类似人类的回答。故选B。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“This power introduces a critical risk — “alignment problem”: an AI, strongly trained for a poorly defined goal, might pursue harmful methods to achieve it. (这种能力带来了一个关键风险——“对齐问题”:一个为定义不清的目标而强力训练的AI,可能会采用有害的方法来实现它。)”可知,“对齐问题”指的是AI为实现目标可能采取有害手段。故选A。
根据第四段中“The most immediate danger may not be a science-fiction-style robot uprising (反抗), but the increase of real-world harms — such as the creation of convincing misinformation, the loss of privacy, or the growth of automated war — through the misuse of powerful, unregulated (不受管制的) tools. (最紧迫的危险可能不是科幻式的机器人起义,而是通过滥用强大且未受监管的工具而加剧的现实危害——例如制造令人信服的虚假信息、隐私丧失或自动化战争的增长。)”可知,最紧迫的危险是AI带来的现实威胁。故选D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中“The most immediate danger may not be a science-fiction-style robot uprising (反抗), but the increase of real-world harms… through the misuse of powerful, unregulated (不受管制的) tools.
【答案】36.D 37.E 38.G 39.A 40.F

36.上文“Weaving a significant new activity such as this into your regular routine obviously takes determination and time.(将这样一项重要的新活动融入你的日常生活显然需要决心和时间)”提到养成一个新习惯需要时间,结合第二段中“One popular idea suggests that it takes 21 days to solidify a habit.(一个流行的观点认为,养成一个习惯需要21天)”可知,下文讲述养成新习惯需要21天,D项“但是养成这个习惯到底需要多长时间呢?”
38.根据下文“Experts suggest various individualized ways to practice frequently, which eventually turn a task into an unconscious habit.(专家建议各种个性化的方法来频繁练习,最终将一项任务变成一种无意识的习惯)”可知,此处是说频繁练习对于养成习惯的重要性,G项“无论对任何个人来说有多长时间,重复都是成功的关键”符合语境,故选G。
39.根据下文“Teaching yourself a completely new skill or process obviously takes longer than remembering to drink more water in the morning.(自学一项全新的技能或过程显然比记住早上多喝水要花更长的时间)”可知,本段是说活动类型影响新习惯的养成,A项“活动的类型也是一个因素”符合语境,故选A。
40.根据上文“The results showed that creating a handwashing habit took a few weeks.(结果表明,养成洗手的习惯需要几周的时间)”和下文“Anyway, handwashing is less complex and offers more opportunities to practice.(不管怎样,洗手不那么复杂,而且提供了更多练习的机会)”可知,空处是提及另一个新习惯,和养成洗手的习惯作比较,F项“相比之下,人们需要半年的时间才能养成锻炼的习惯”符合语境,故选F。

56. considered 57. which;58. but;59. gathered;60. discussing;61. to learn;62. on;63. tiredness;64. yearly;65. will be passed
58. but 固定搭配:not only...but also...(不仅……
60. discussing while discussing 是 while they were discussing 的省略形式,用现在分词表示主动进行的动作。
62. on 固定搭配:depend on(取决于)。

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

At once, I ran to a shop nearby. Holding the money in my hand, I asked the shopkeeper if I could buy a pair of warm gloves for my mom as a birthday gift. The shopkeeper looked at me and smiled kindly. He asked me to wait for a moment. Soon, he came back with a pair of soft pink gloves. “These are just ten dollars,” he said gently. I could not believe my ears. I gave him the money and took the gloves carefully, with great joy.
On my way home, I held the gloves close to my chest. I kept thinking about Mom’s happy face. I thanked the kind shopkeeper and Mrs. Green again and again in my mind. Their kindness made me feel that the world was full of love. When I handed the gloves to Mom, she looked very surprised and happy. She put them on at once and hugged me tightly. At that moment, I truly understood that love is not measured by how much money you spend, but by how much care and warmth you give.
