I worked as a journalist and I was lucky to have an interview with Ezra Pryme, the famous English eccentric (怪人). I say “lucky”, because Ezra Pryme doesn’t have much time for humans and he almost has no visitors. He is very rich and he has a very big country house with a large garden. He has got a large family, but he never sees any of his children or his grandchildren. “I haven’t got any time for them,” he says. He has the largest collection of Art Deco objects in the world, but he is the only one who ever sees them.
I knocked at the door of the house at exactly 3 p.m. Ezra’s servant opened the door for me. I was led through a large hall where all sorts of paintings are on the walls and then into a library. I waited for a while and at last a very short man appeared. As soon as he saw me, he held out his hand. Not expecting this, I hesitated for a moment. “You can shake hands,” he said. “I don’t have any diseases!” “Mind the steps!” he cried, leading me down some steps. “I don’t say that to all my visitors, you know!”
5. The underlined word “hesitated” probably means?
A. introduced oneself B. held out ones hand C. showed uncertainty D. showed dislikes
6. The writer was allowed to have the interview________.
A. because he was not a human being B. because he was a lucky journalist
C. but we don’t know the reason D. since the eccentric likes journalists
7. Ezra Pryme is called eccentric for the following reasons EXCEPT________.
A. he never sees any of his children B. he has no time for humans
C. he has seldom had visitors D. he decided to see the journalist
8. From the passage we may infer________.
A. Ezra Pryme lives far away from people
B. Ezra Pryme keeps himself away from other people
C. the writer hesitated because he thought Ezra Pryme had some disease
D. the short man really has some illness
【答案】5. C 6. C 7. D 8. B

【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“As soon as he saw me, he held out his hand. Not expecting this, I hesitated for a moment. (他一看到我,就伸出了手。没想到会这样,我_____了一会儿)”可知,作者没想到埃兹拉·普赖姆会伸出手来握手,所以会犹豫,不确定要不要握手。由此可推断出hesitated意思是“犹豫,不确定”,与C项“showed uncertainty”意思相近。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“I say “lucky”, because Ezra Pryme doesn’t have much time for humans and he almost has no visitors.(我说“幸运”,是因为埃兹拉·普赖姆不愿与人打交道,几乎从不接待访客)”可知,记者将此次采访称为“幸运”恰恰说明普赖姆通常拒绝接受采访,但文中并未明确交代此次破例接受采访的具体原因。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“I say “lucky”, because Ezra Pryme doesn’t have much time for humans and he almost has no visitors. He is very rich and he has a very big country house with a large garden. He has got a large family, but he never sees any of his children or his grandchildren.(我说“幸运”,是因为埃兹拉·普赖姆不愿与人打交道,几乎从不接待访客。他非常富有,有一座很大的乡间别墅,还有一个大花园。他有一个大家庭,但他从不见他的任何孩子或孙子孙女)”可知,埃兹拉·普赖姆被称为怪人是因为他从不看望他的孩子,没有时间与人相处,很少有访客,不包括D项“他决定见这位记者”。
【8题详解】

Do you know why different animals or insects (昆虫) have their special colors? Colors are used mainly for protecting themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫), but they cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops (庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But when the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have.
Some other insects with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves in the day and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals cannot be easily seen by hunters (猎人), This is because they have the colors much like the trees.
A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid (液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid is around, its enemies (敌人) can’t find it. And it runs away at once. So it has lived for millions of years though it is not strong at all.
9. Why do different animals or insects have their special colors?
A. Because they want to protect themselves. B. Because they want to attract enemies
C. Because they like changing colors. D. Because they like different colors.
10. When crops are green, locusts look ________
A. red. B. brown. C. green. D. black.
11. What do insects with different colors from plants do to protect themselves?
A. They appear in the day and hide at night. B. They hide in the day and appear at night.
C. They hide themselves day and night. D. They move quietly.
12. Why has the fish lived for millions of years?
A. Because it is strong.
B. Because it has the same color as the sea.
C. Because it can change its color when in danger.
D. Because it can send out a kind of liquid and run away when in danger.
【答案】9. A 10. C 11. B 12. D

D. Because it can send out a kind of liquid and run away when in danger.
