Mike proved he was smart in his first year at the University of Illinois. In 1987, when he was a freshman, he had gotten $2,500 from a job working at a store, but the money would not go far to pay the four years of tuition (学费) and college expenses that added up to around $28,000. His middle-class family had already put his elder brothers through college. While Mike’s parents would have helped him to pay, Mike did not want his parents going into debt (债务) for him. He came up with an idea to solve the problem.
Mike wrote to Chicago Tribune editor Bob Greene. He wanted each of the newspaper’s readers to send him a penny (分). Greene thought the idea sounded fun and agreed to do it. He shared Mike’s letter with his readers on September 6, 1987.
“Just one penny,’’ Mike said. “A penny doesn’t mean anything to anyone. If everyone who is reading your reports looks around the room right now, there will be a penny on the corner of the desk, or on the floor. That’s all I’m asking. A penny from each of your readers.”
In less than a month, the Many Pennies for Mike Fund had around $23,000. Donations were received from every state in the United States, and even Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas. So, Mike achieved $28,000 goal and went on to learn food science from the University of Illinois.
In the end, Mike had this to pay about the whole thing, “I just want to express my thanks to everyone... right now I’m feeling that the world is a pretty great place.”
4. What troubled Mike when he was in his first year at college?
A. He couldn’t afford his tuition. B. He failed to find a part-time job.

His middle-class family had already put his elder brothers through college. The English language is constantly evolving (演变), and there are a great number of words out there that don’t mean what they used to. We’re talking about common words that you use every day. We take them for granted, but at some point in history, their meanings totally changed, and they all originally (原始地) meant something much different.
Generally speaking, the word “nice” is one with good meanings. However, back in the late 12th century, if someone said you were “nice”, it was far from nice. Way back then, “nice” was used to mean “foolish” and “stupid”. Later on in the 13th century, “nice” came to mean “shy”, and during the 14th century, it even meant “being careful”. But finally in the 18th century, it changed to the kinder definition we know today, and ever since then, people have been using it in a popular way.
All of us get sad every now and then. It’s a normal part of life. A loved one passes away, we don’t get promoted at work, or your favorite toy is lost. These are all things that can make us very sad. However, once upon a time, “sad” had a very different definition. Back in the 1300s, it was the perfect word if you’d eaten too much food at dinner. Through the years, the definition of “sad” changed to “heavy” and then “tired”, all before evolving into the word we use today.
“Awful” is perhaps the one word on this list that should have stuck with its original meaning. While today it means “bad” or “terrible”, “awful” used to mean “awe-inspiring” or “full of awe”. In other words, if something was “awful”, then it was worthy of respect or even fear. However, over the years, “awful” has come to have a completely opposite meaning.
8. How many examples are given to support the topic of this text?
A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.
9. What did “nice” mean in the 14th century?
A. Shy. B. Foolish. C. Being careful. D. Terrible.
10. If you’d eaten too much at dinner, which word did you use in the 14th century?
A. Nice. B. Sad. C. Awful. D. Heavy.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Words That Originally Meant Something Different
B. Words with Opposite Meanings
C. Languages Seldom Change in History
D. Don’t Remember the Meanings of Words
A 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中“Later on in the 13th century, “nice” came to mean “shy”, and during the 14th century, it even meant “being careful”.( 到了13世纪,“nice”逐渐演变为“害羞”的意思,而在14世纪,它甚至开始表示“小心谨慎”。)”
根据第三段中“However, once upon a time, “sad” had a very different definition. Back in the 1300s, it was the perfect word if you’d eaten too much food at dinner. Through the years, the definition of “sad” changed to “heavy” and then “tired”, all before evolving into the word we use today.( 然而,曾经,“sad”这个词有着完全不同的含义。在14世纪,如果你晚餐吃得太饱,说“sad”就是最恰当的表达。多年来,“悲伤”一词的含义逐渐演变为“沉重”,再后来变成“疲惫”,最终发展成我们今天所用的这个词。)”可推知,句中的“it 明确指代前文的“sad”,说明 14 世纪人们用“sad”来形容“吃得太饱” 的状态。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段“The English language is constantly evolving (演变), and there are a great number of words out there that don’t mean what they used to. We’re talking about common words that you use every day. We take them for granted, but at some point in history, their meanings totally changed, and they all originally (原始地) meant something much different.( 英语语言一直在不断演变,有许多词汇的含义已经与过去大不相同。我们所说的是一些你每天都会用到的常见词语。我们通常会理所当然地使用它们,但在历史的某个时期,它们的含义发生了彻底的变化,原本的意思完全不同。)”可知,文章主要介绍了英语词汇在不断演变,不少日常用词的古义与现在差别很大。文章依次介绍了 nice、sad、awful 三个单词,讲述了它们词义历经多个阶段逐步变化的过程。由此可知,这篇文章适合的标题是“原始含义截然不同的单词”。

Protecting Dunhuang’s Ancient Art
The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang are one of China’s most important cultural treasures. These caves hold beautiful Buddhist art over 1,000 years old, with colorful paintings and delicate sculptures that tell stories of the Silk Road. However, this priceless heritage is at risk from natural threats like wind, rain, and sunlight, which slowly damage the fragile artworks.
To protect these treasures, scientists and experts are using modern technology. Special sensors (传感器) check the caves’ temperature and humidity, while high-resolution cameras track changes in the paintings. Computer analysis helps experts study damage patterns and find the best restoration methods. Some even use 3D scanning to create digital backups of the art.
Interestingly, Dunhuang’s conservation (保护) work is similar to skincare science. SkinCeuticals, a skincare company focused on research, has partnered with Dunhuang to support protection efforts. Just as experts protect ancient art from environmental damage, SkinCeuticals studies how to protect skin from aging. Both fields use science to keep beauty—one for cultural heritage, the other for personal care.
Recently, SkinCeuticals donated funds to help Dunhuang’s conservation research. This partnership shows how modern science and technology can safeguard cultural heritage. Through research, careful monitoring, and new techniques, experts are working hard to ensure Dunhuang’s art survives for future generations to study and admire.
12. What is the main threat to the Mogao Caves’ artworks?
A. Human activities.
B. Pollution from tourists.
C. Lack of financial support.
D. Natural factors like wind, rain, and sunlight.
13. How do scientists monitor(检测) the condition of the caves’ paintings?
A. By limiting the number of visitors.
B. By asking tourists to report damages.
C. By moving the artworks to museums.
D. By using special sensors and high-resolution cameras.
14. What is the meaning of the underlined word “safeguard” in the last paragraph?
A. Protect. B. Display. C. Ignore. D. Destroy.
15. What can we learn from the article about the future of Dunhuang’s conservation work?
A. The artworks will soon disappear due to permanent damage.
B. Modern technology and research will help protect the caves.
C. Only international experts can save Dunhuang’s cultural heritage.
D. The caves will be closed to the public forever for protection.
D 13. D 14. A 15. B

It was a rather crowded day at the subway station. Seeing the busy passers-by stopped by his performance, Eric, a music lover who just graduated from college, wore a big smile on his face. With deep passion for music, he showed up in the station in his spare time, singing and playing the guitar to people travelling to and from the subway station.
With the melodious (悦耳的) song coming to an end, hearty applause burst out. As usual, Eric expressed his gratitude, nodding his head with a smile. “Man, awesome! An outstanding performance!” Approached a man, holding the hand of a little girl in a ponytail (马尾辫), aged about four.
“Park, a producer of a record company.” The man introduced himself, holding out his hand. “Would you like to give it a try in my company?” Out of politeness, Eric shook hands with him in amazement.
“I haven’t seen somebody this good in a long time! You are a beautiful scenery of this city, with such a beautiful voice!” Park admired. Suddenly, a phone call interrupted their conversation. Park briefly invited Eric to meet later in the same place and walked away to answer the call. Seeing Park off, Eric did realize what had happened, with warm current flowing from his head to toes. It was the first time that he had earned such kind of recognition, which was totally out of his expectation.
“A beautiful scenery of the city, with a beautiful voice!” Eric repeated the words, cleaning his guitar and preparing for the next performance. At that time, he caught sight of a little girl in a ponytail standing in a corner, weeping and looking around. Carrying his guitar, Eric approached her and squatted (蹲) down, “What’s wrong with you, honey?”

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Version 1
“I can’t find my daddy.” The girl burst out crying. Seeing her weep turning into the helpless cry, Eric looked around nervously. “How to find her father in such a crowd?” Suddenly, the office of the subway station came into view. Having packed up his things, Eric squeezed his way to the office, holding her tiny hand. There he informed the staff of the situation. After the broadcast, the girl still cried, with her eyes swollen. At the sight of the guitar, it hit Eric that music might comfort the anxious girl. Soon, a beautiful voice lingered around the room.
The girl calmed down in Eric’s song when a man rushed into the office of the subway station. “Daddy, I am here!” The little girl screamed, throwing herself to her daddy’s arms and cracked a big smile. Casting a glance to the man, Eric recognized that it was Park. Knowing the whole story, Park conveyed his gratitude: “You are truly a beautiful scenery of the city, not only with your beautiful voice, but with your heart, actually.” He added, “Again, would you like to join our company?” This time Eric answered with a smile, “That’s a deal.”
Version 2
“I can’t find my daddy.” The girl burst out crying. Eric was softly comforting her when he suddenly noticed the office of the subway station. He thought he’d better take the girl there and broadcast the message, which may help find her parents. But the appointment with Park crossed his mind. “What if I miss the meeting with Park?” Shaking his head, Eric gently took the girl’s hand, headed to the office and turned to the staff for help. Looking at the tearful girl, Eric hit upon an idea. Clearing his throat, he took up his guitar.
The girl calmed down in Eric’s song when a man rushed into the office of the subway station. “Daddy!” the little girl shouted excitedly and threw herself to the man like a little merry bird. To Eric’s surprise, it was Park! He met him again, in such an occasion! “I thought that I may not have the chance to meet you again.” said Eric, with a shy smile. “Glad to see you again. Thank you so much!” Park replied with gratitude. “Daddy. Eric sings beautiful songs.” “Yes, honey.”Park said, “Eric sings beautiful songs because he has a beautiful heart.”
