In some places, there is no public heating system, so people have to use air conditioning (AC) in winter. If you use the AC in a scientific way, you can save money and energy. Here are some things you need to know.
Cleaning: Before you start your AC for the winter, you should clean it. The AC has been a gathering place for dust, and something bad for health during the autumn.
Choose suitable AC: AC can heat the cold air of a certain space, so choose an AC according to the size of your room. The larger your room is, the more powerful the AC should be.
Set the AC at 20℃: Lowering the AC’s temperature by every 2℃ could save more than 10 percent of energy.
Adjust flaps (调节风门) downward: Let the warm wind blow down. Since hot air is lighter than cold air, the warm wind will go up while the cold air is pushed and mixed with the rising warm air— this helps to warm the room quickly.
Keep the AC on: If you turn off the AC too often in a short time, you might break the compressor (压缩机) , which will stop the AC working well and make the AC’s life shorter. More energy will be used.
根据短文和图示内容,选择最佳答案。

A. Because cold air is lighter. B. Because cold air can push the hot air.
C. Because hot air can rise to warm the room. D. Because it can make the AC less noisy.
29. What might happen if the AC is turned off too often in a short time?
A. Save more energy. B. Make the AC work well.
C. Cut down the working life of the AC. D. Make the room cool down quickly.

My wife Hannah and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots always ends up either over-watered or under-watered. But after I received bad news about my health, I began to want something green in our home to feel better.
At that time, my friend Mitch came to give me a plant called lucky bamboo. It stood straight in the pot. I fell in love with it at once and decided to take care of it. I put it by the window where sunlight could shine in. Every morning, I gave it a little water and gently cleaned its leaves.
For weeks, the bamboo thrived. Its leaves were soft and bright green and it grew taller and stronger every day. But gradually, thin yellow spots (斑点) began to spread along the edges of the leaves. I watered it more often and added special plant food, hoping it would be well soon. However, no matter what I did, the leaves stayed yellow. Each day, I stood quietly by the window for a long time, watching the weak plant, wondering if it and I would both be able to go through the difficulties.
One evening, Hannah noticed my silence. “You’ve cared for it with all your heart each day,” she said softly. “Sometimes growth takes time, and recovering (恢复) needs time too.”
Hearing her words, I was no longer worried. At that moment, the weak bamboo standing before me inspired me to keep moving forward, just as I was trying my best to help it recover.
I kept caring for it patiently. Slowly, new green leaves appeared. And the leaves dance gently in the wind. It seems to say that hope is returning slowly.

A camera trap (感应捕捉装置) filmed China’s first wild Amur tigress (雌虎) with five cubs (崽), reported by WWF China. It was recorded in November 2023, in a National Park in Hunchun, Jilin province. The park is part of the world’s largest tiger reserve.
The video clearly shows the adult tigress, gently caring for her five cubs, including feeding and protecting them. According to a media statement from WWF China, the tigress is thought to be about 9 years old, while the cubs are believed to be 6 to 8 months old.
WWF China noted that having five cubs at a time is really rare for wild Amur tigers. They usually give birth to 1 to 4 cubs even in good conditions with plenty of food. What makes it more amazing is that all five cubs have successfully lived although there isn’t enough food. Last month, park guards in Hunchun also took pictures of another Amur tigress who is guessed to be 7 or 8 years old. She was together with four cubs, which are also 6 to 8 months old.
As a top catcher, Amur tigers depend greatly on the wholeness of their living place and the health of the food chain. These sightings of tiger families fully show that China’s long-term protection work is highly effective.
Also known as Siberian tigers, they are among the world’s most endangered big cats and a symbol of healthy forest environments. In 1998, only 12 to 16 Amur tigers were believed to be living in the wild in China, but now there are about 70 wild Amur tigers in this national park alone.
WWF officials said the video not only proves (证明) China’s protection efforts are working well but also brings great hope for protecting other endangered animals.

A. The national park. B. The video of a tigress and five cubs.

A. Man-made houses and enough water. B. Complete living places and healthy food chain.

38. Why do people think the five cubs are amazing?
A. Because their mother is very young.
B. Because they are the youngest tiger cubs in the park.
C. Because they all survived though food was not enough.
D. Because they can look for food by themselves.
39. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To tell people how to protect Amur tigers.
B. To explain why Amur tigers are endangered.

Sayram Lake, a wonderful alpine lake, is located in the Tianshan Mountains in the northwest of Xinjiang. It has a beautiful nickname, “the last tear of the Atlantic”, for it is the final destination of the warm and wet air from the Atlantic Ocean.
Sayram Lake is a real treat for the eyes, where you can see snow mountains, grasslands, forests, and the bright blue lake all in one view. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The grasslands come alive with flowers in spring. In summer, the lake looks its deepest blue. The forests put on a show of golden and red colours by autumn. And if you visit in winter, you will walk into a wonderland of ice and snow with amazing sights.
Upon entering the eastern gate of the Sayram Lake Scenic Area, the first attraction is Moon Bay. The bay is like a crescent (新月形的) moon in shape, hence its name. It is also a perfect place to watch the sunset over the wide lake. For a fantastic full view of the lake and the Guozigou Bridge, you can climb to Songshutou. Another great place is Qinshui Beach, where you can often see swans and sometimes even interact with them.
For the best experience, go on a self-drive tour. It is a good way to explore the view around the lake freely. You can also take the scenic area’s sightseeing bus. If you are a cycling lover, riding a bike is another great way to enjoy the lake.

A warm cross-border (跨国) friendship has warmed millions of Chinese people recently. A kind donation (捐赠, 捐款) made 27 years ago has finally grown into a large green forest in China’s desert areas.
In 1999, Ronald Sakolsky worked as a foreign teacher in Luoyang. He heard touching stories about Yin Yuzhen. She spent years fighting against desert growth in Mu Us Sandy Land, trying hard to turn dry, empty land into green woods. He was determined to do something. He raised 5, 000 US dollars and gave the money to environmental groups to help her plant more trees. In the same year, Ronald visited the sandy land and became close friends with Yin. Unluckily, they lost touch with each other soon after and had no communication for 27 years. However, Yin never forgot the help from her foreign friend. She kept working on tree planting for nearly 40 years. She took good care of every young tree with the donated money. Year by year, small saplings (幼树) grew into strong big trees.
Now, over 50, 000 green trees cover the old desert, and the poor land becomes lively and fresh again. Yin posted a video online on May 16, 2026. She hoped to find her old friend and share the amazing changes of the desert with him. With lots of warm-hearted people’s help, the two friends talked on the phone happily just one day later. Ronald felt very excited about this special reunion. He hoped to come back to China soon, and plant new trees together with Yin.
Love and kindness have no country lines, and long-time hard work always pays off. This beautiful story tells us that people around the world can work together to protect our earth, and build a greener and better shared home.
