Last Friday, I left home early for an important competition. However, I soon got stuck in a heavy traffic jam on the city road. All the cars stood in a long line, and drivers were honking (鸣笛) loudly in anger. No one seemed willing to solve the problem.
Looking ahead, I saw what was causing the chaos: a delivery (快递) truck had broken down at the crossing. Its engine (引擎) wouldn’t start. Most drivers just sat in their cars, complaining about being stuck (堵住). Some even shouted at the truck driver, who looked very upset. More and more cars joined the line, making the problem worse.
I jumped out of my car and walked to the truck. “Let’s push it to the side!” I called. At first, no one moved. Then two other drivers came over. Together, we pushed the heavy truck to the sidewalk. Soon, the traffic started moving again. The driver thanked us with a big smile.
That day, I arrived at the competition just in time. But more importantly, I learned a valuable lesson. When unexpected problems happen, blaming (责备) others won’t help. Taking action to solve the problem is much better. Small acts of kindness can not only make things better, but also bring warmth to everyone around us. This experience taught me that cooperation is far more powerful than complaining, and that a little effort can turn trouble into progress.

What is both a delicious snack and a beautiful piece of art? For many Chinese people, the answer is sugar painting. It is a traditional folk art that has a long history.
The history of sugar painting goes back over 400 years, to the Ming Dynasty. At that time, people made sugar figures for traditional festivals and special ceremonies. Later, it became popular among common people. In old China, street artists would set up small stalls in markets, making sugar painting for children and adults.
To make sugar painting, artists need only a few simple tools: a small pot of melted (融化的) sugar, a metal spoon, and a smooth stone board. They heat the sugar until it turns into a golden liquid. Then, they use the spoon to draw pictures on the board quickly. The pictures are often animals, flowers, or characters from Chinese stories. Once the sugar cools and hardens, the artist sticks a bamboo stick into it. Then you can hold it and eat it!
In the 1980s, sugar painting became popular with visitors from other countries. Many foreign travelers were surprised by how the artists could draw such clear pictures with hot sugar. Even today, sugar painting stalls are still common at traditional festivals and night markets.
For the artists, sugar painting is more than just a way to make money. It is a way to keep a part of Chinese culture alive. When children watch the artist draw a dragon or a rabbit with just sugar, they learn about the stories behind the pictures. It is not just sweet; it carries the warmth of old times.

China has made some changes in its food labels (标签) recently and three of them have become a heated topic.
To begin with, the government requires food labels should be made easier and clearer to read. Information, such as sugar, salt and unhealthy fats (脂肪), should be clearly included on the label. By doing so, the government hopes this will encourage healthier eating habits among people. At the same time, it is required that common allergens (过敏原) should be included on the label, which will possibly help people avoid risks.
Another new change is that labels such as “no additives (添加剂)” or “zero additives” should no longer be allowed. The government says labels like these have already led shoppers to believe that a product is healthy when it is in fact not. Take a famous food company as an example. In order to increase sales, the label “zero additives” was added to its products. However, the label has been questioned. Tests have found small amounts of harmful additives in its products. Many people came to believe the “zero” label was just a marketing lie.
The use of digital labels is also worth noticing. Companies are being advised to have QR codes (二维码) included on food labels. This allows customers to get more information about the product. This is helpful for people who want to learn more about what they are eating. More than 400 products have already used this smart labeling system.
Food safety has always been among top cares for every Chinese. By making these changes in food labels, China hopes to help people make healthier and safer food choices.

Evan Kail, a 37-year-old American, has become widely known for his courage to protect the truth of history and his deep friendship with China and its people. On March 15, 2026, he said that he would live in Tianjin, China. This decision got a lot of attention and people see it as a warm example of friendship between China and the USA.
Evan first caught the world’s eye in 2022. As a pawnshop (典当行) owner in Minnesota, he received a valuable old photo album with over 30 real pictures. These pictures clearly recorded the cruel facts of the Japanese army’s invasion (侵略) of China during World War II. Although some people offered him a lot of money for the album and even threatened (恐吓) him online, he refused all of them without hesitation (犹豫). He believed that historical truth shouldn’t be exchanged.
Evan’s love for China kept growing during his first visit in late 2024. His trip was supposed to be 76 days, but he stayed for 90 days. He visited over 40 cities, including Beijing, Nanjing, and Harbin. He took part in some meaningful activities and visited museums to learn more about Chinese history and culture.
In early 2025, he was invited to the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, where he spoke simple Chinese warmly. He said Tianjin’s environment and buildings made him feel at home.
Evan’s decision to live in China shows that a person’s kindness can cross national borders (国界) and protect historical justice (正义). As a foreigner who truly understands and respects China, he helps more people around the world see a real, open, and friendly China.

【导语】本文讲述了上周五,作者因交通堵塞主动推动故障货车,解决了拥堵。他感悟到:面对问题,指责无用,行动与合作才能带来改变,小善举能温暖人心。
【31题详解】

【32题详解】
第二段第一句“...a delivery truck had broken down at the crossing.”指出,造成交通堵塞的原因是一辆坏掉的卡车。

A. To make it easier for people to hold and eat it.

D. To help the sugar painting cool down faster.
39. What does the word “It” in the last paragraph refer to?
