After my mother got Alzheimer (阿尔兹海默症), the plants in our house began to turn brown and drop. I had been so focused on the increasing needs of my mother’s own care that her beloved (钟爱的) plants had been out of my notice.
I began her old rounds, poured water, and soon they thrived (茁壮成长). That’s the thing about houseplants: They need nothing. They wait quietly, no matter how thirsty they are.
But even after my best tries, some of the plants could not be living. My mother’s sister brought new ones to add to her collection, and my father then bought fresh flowers every week at the fruit and vegetable market.
Even as Alzheimer stole so much of her memory, her strong wish to care was still there. I would guide her to water one of the plants herself. I watched as her trembling (颤抖的) hands picked up the leaves that had turned brown. Each time, she smiled up at me with deep satisfaction because being able to care for something was still what brought her the greatest joy.
I look at plants differently these days. I see them as my mother does: quiet reminders of the need for kindness toward all living things. It is clear to me that the things we spend a lifetime raising are never truly lost; the kindness she has planted in me still blooms (开花).
3. The plants began to die in the writer’s house because ________.
A. they didn’t get the writer’s care
B. they got serious illnesses
C. the writer wasn’t good at caring for them
4. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?
A. The reasons for the plants’ death
B. The methods of dealing with Alzheimer.
C. The writer and her family’s efforts to save the plants.
5. How did the writer’s mom feel when watering the plants?
A. Sad and disappointed. B. Happy and satisfied. C. Excited and proud.
6. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The True Meaning of Life
B. Love Will Never Get Lost
C. Planting Kindness in My Heart
【答案】3. A 4. C 5. B 6. C

第四段写道:“Each time, she smiled up at me with deep satisfaction because being able to care for something was still what brought her the greatest joy.” 母亲浇水时面带微笑、深感满足,这是她最大的快乐,对应B选项“开心且满足”。

I am Ella. I still remember my first time to play the violin when I was only 6. Once I heard my classmate in the kindergarten (幼儿园) play the guitar. I told my mom that I wanted to buy one. My mother asked me what instrument I liked best. I had no idea, so she took me to the instrument store.I was attracted (吸引) by the colorful violins, guitars and so on. After a few lessons, I found that playing the violin was not always interesting. It was boring to remember long pieces of music and practice again and again. I wanted to give up.
My mother had a long talk with me. She said,“Nothing is fun all the time. It is necessary for us to stick to something difficult to develop important skills and willpower (意志力). Finding the courage to keep it going can help you succeed.” After hearing this, I continued playing the violin.
