Entomophagy This is a proper term for eating insects! Numerous people realize that many of our basic food may disappear in the coming decades and insects can offer people good protein (蛋白质) to replace animal meats, so they believe insects are a good choice. It hasn’t quite happened yet because we all think insects are extremely unpleasant. But, many chefs are already experimenting in the field. A number of top chefs in London are using their cooking creativity to turn something unpleasant into something delicious. Tech at the Table Digital products will probably become a common part of our food and drink experiences in the near future. We’re going to see things like tablets and computer screens that can tell stories around the food we are eating. We’ll be able to change the color of plates digitally, because we know that colors can change the taste of food or make it look better. The Experimental Meal The experimental meal is liked by a growing number of people interested in finding new connections between their senses. They think that food is not just what goes into the mouth, but a whole experience. They’re seeing dining — music, lighting, staff uniforms, temperature changes — as a whole meal. They are trying to put different things together instead of having dinner and then going to the theatre, why not bring the two together? The same goes for cinema and music. 1. What is the reason for some people to turn to insects for food? A. The better taste of protein from insects. B. The popularity of some chefs in London. C. The possibility of main food disappearing. D. The performance of some chefs’ experiments. 2. Why is the color of plates changed digitally? A. To make the food healthy. B. To make the food attractive. C. To make the plate funny. D. To make the plate eco-friendly. 3. Why do some people prefer the experimental meal? A. To connect senses in a new way. B. To bring colorful plates together. C. To combine food with digital products. D. To carry out technology experiments. C 2. B 3. 根据第二段“Numerous people realize that many of our basic food may disappear in the coming decades and insects can offer people good protein (蛋白质) to replace animal meats, so they believe insects are a good choice.(许多人意识到我们的许多基本食物可能在未来几十年消失,昆虫可以为人们提供良好的蛋白质来代替动物肉类,所以他们认为昆虫是一个很好的选择)”可知,有些人以昆虫为食的原因是主要食物消失的可能性。 根据第三段“We’ll be able to change the color of plates digitally, because we know that colors can change the taste of food or make it look better.(我们将能够用数字技术改变盘子的颜色,因为我们知道颜色可以改变食物的味道,或者让它看起来更好)”可知,底片的颜色用数码来改变是为了使食物有吸引力。 根据最后一段“The experimental meal is liked by a growing number of people interested in finding new connections between their senses. They think that food is not just what goes into the mouth, but a whole experience. They’re seeing dining—music, lighting, staff uniforms, temperature changes—as a whole meal.(越来越多的人对寻找感官之间的新联系感兴趣,他们喜欢这种实验性的食物。他们认为食物不仅仅是吃进嘴里的东西,而是一种完整的体验。他们把用餐——音乐、灯光、员工制服、温度变化——看作是一顿完整的饭)”可知,有些人更喜欢实验餐是为了以一种新的方式连接感官。故选A。 B We find the owl at the very edge of our woods the morning after the storm. Wings flight-frozen and round eyes glassy. I touch its feathers lightly with my fingertip and I’m surprised because they still feel real even though the owl has slipped away somewhere else and Dad is already digging a hole for it in the rain-soaked earth. I lift its body and it’s huge in my hands but the hollow bones do most of the work for me and I almost think the owl might shake the stiffness from its feathers and fly away. I really don’t think this one should go into a hole in the ground. I say that to Dad and he says that it’s the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again. Feeding the soil with its flesh and growing the roots of plants from its feathers. Dad shifts the last of the dirt with his spade and sits down at the base of a tree with a huff of air that smokes around him. I put the bird in the hole and mark it with a smooth pebble (鹅卵石) so I’ll always know. After we’ve buried the owl, we walk all around the woods and clear the worst of the damage from the winds and the rain. The damage isn’t as bad as it’s been before and it feels like the storm has cleaned everything back to being new and fresh. I use my hawk eyes and search the ground in flicks and sweeps and I find treasures in the rain raked earth just like always. Pieces of pottery and something that could be a Roman coin. I slip them into my pocket and they bump against each other to tell their stories to me, but I’ll listen later. I help Dad load the best of the fallen branches on to the trailer so we can cut them for fire wood or maybe a bonfire, and then we drive over the muddy paths and back to our house. 4. What do we know about the owl when the author finds it? A. It is trying to flee the woods. B. It is hidden in a hole. C. It is too stiff to fly away. D. It is already dead. 5. Why does the author mark the hole with a pebble? A. To keep the site clear of plants. B. To make future visits accessible. C. To show sympathy for the owl. D. To draw the attention of passers - by. 6. What message does the author want to convey by mentioning the owl? A. The darkest hour has only sixty minutes. B. With every leaf’s fall, a new life rises. C. Storms make trees take deeper roots. D. In nature’s embrace, time stands still. 7. What does “I’ll listen later” in paragraph 4 reveal about the author? A. Wonder-seeking. B. Artistically talented. C. Money-driven. D. Emotionally sound. D 5. B 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“Wings flight-frozen and round eyes glassy. I touch its feathers lightly with my fingertip and I’m surprised because they still feel real even though the owl has slipped away somewhere else and Dad is already digging a hole for it in the rain-soaked earth.(翅膀僵硬无法飞翔,圆圆的双眼呆滞无神。我用指尖轻轻触碰它的羽毛,心里十分诧异,羽毛触感依旧真实,可这只猫头鹰已经离去,父亲也已在被雨水浸透的土地上为它挖坑。)”可知,作者发现猫头鹰时,它已经死去。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“I put the bird in the hole and mark it with a smooth pebble (鹅卵石) so I’ll always know. (我把这只鸟儿放进坑里,用一块光滑的鹅卵石做标记,这样我就能一直知晓这个位置。)”可知,作者用鹅卵石标记土坑,是为了日后能找到这里。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I say that to Dad and he says that it’s the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again. Feeding the soil with its flesh and growing the roots of plants from its feathers.(我把这件事告诉了爸爸,他说这就是生命的轮回。如今这只猫头鹰将重归自然,躯体化作泥土的养分,羽毛也会滋养草木生根生长。)”可知,作者借猫头鹰的故事表达生命逝去亦会孕育新生的道理。 【7题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“I use my hawk eyes and search the ground in flicks and sweeps and I find treasures in the rain raked earth just like always. Pieces of pottery and something that could be a Roman coin. I slip them into my pocket and they bump against each other to tell their stories to me, but I’ll listen later. (我像鹰一样敏锐地扫视地面,一如往常,在被雨水冲刷过的泥土里发现了宝物,有陶器碎片和一枚疑似罗马钱币的物件。我把它们放进口袋,这些物件相互碰撞,仿佛要向我诉说过往,而我打算稍后再聆听。)”可知,作者喜爱寻找各类物件、探寻背后的故事,这句话体现出作者热爱探索、心怀好奇,因此“乐于探寻新奇事物”符合语境。 C Have you ever questioned why someone is being unusually kind? You’re not alone. We often instinctively look for hidden motives behind generous acts, a reaction psychologists call “do-gooder derogation.” This means we may judge a seemingly selfless person more harshly (严厉地) than someone who is openly self-interested. A classic experiment, the “public goods game”, demonstrates this. Participants are given money and can choose to contribute to a shared pot, which grows and is later split equally. While contributing maximizes the group’s total gain, selfish individuals can contribute little and still benefit. Surprisingly, the most generous contributors in this game are often criticized as much as the selfish “free riders”. Psychologist Nichola Raihani suggests we are all playing a social “status game”. We are suspicious of those who might be using kindness to boost their reputation. This suspicion is at the heart of the “tainted altruism effect”. Imagine a friend, Andy, volunteers at a homeless shelter. If we discover his true motive is to date the shelter manager, we judge him more severely than if he took a coffee shop job for the same reason. The charitable context makes the hidden motive seem worse. Researcher Sebastian Hafenbradl explored this further. His studies confirmed that we judge people like Andy more harshly when they seek social rewards from a good deed. Interestingly, the judgment softens if the person is honest about their motive upfront, as this removes the “unearned social reward” of appearing purely altruistic Furthermore, people who do good merely to feel good about themselves are judged less harshly than those seeking to enhance their reputation. Both acts contain self-interest, but seeking public approval is seen as more dishonest. So, is any act truly selfless? Perhaps not. But if the result is more kindness in the world, maybe we can forgive a little mixed motivation. 8. What is the purpose of mentioning the “public goods game” in paragraph 2? A. To support a social theory with evidence. B. To explain the rules of a well-known game. C. To introduce a popular economic experiment D. To give an example of a psychological finding. 9. The “tainted altruism effect” is best shown in the case where ________. A. an athlete’s fair win brings public honor. B. a firm’s charity donation aims at a tax cut. C. a student’s hard work targets a scholarship. D. a volunteer’s sharing seeks to inspire others. 10. What did Sebastian Hafenbradi’s studies find? A. Seeking public approval shows the least honesty. B. Hiding selfish motives results in gentler criticism. C. Admitting selfish motives in advance reduces blame. D. Acting for self-satisfaction draws the strongest criticism. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards mixed-motive kindness? A. Tolerant. B. Indifferent. C. Confused. D. Critical. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段中的“We often instinctively look for hidden motives behind generous acts, a reaction psychologists call “do-gooder derogation.”(我们总会本能揣测慷慨举动背后的隐藏动机,这种心理反应被心理学家称作“行善者贬损效应”。)”以及第二段开头的“A classic experiment, the ‘public goods game’, demonstrates this.(一个经典的实验,‘公共物品游戏’,证明了这一点。)” 根据第三段中的“We are suspicious of those who might be using kindness to boost their reputation. This suspicion is at the heart of the “tainted altruism effect”.(人们会怀疑有人借善意抬高自身声望,这种质疑就是“沾染私利的利他效应”的核心。)”以及举例“Imagine a friend, Andy, volunteers at a homeless shelter. If we discover his true motive is to date the shelter manager(想象一下,朋友安迪在流浪者收容所做志愿者。如果我们发现他的真实动机是为了约会收容所经理)”可知,该效应指的是在慈善背景下,隐藏的个人私利会被看得更严重。B选项“一家公司的慈善捐款旨在减税”符合这一描述。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Interestingly, the judgment softens if the person is honest about their motive upfront, as this removes the ‘unearned social reward’ of appearing purely altruistic (利他主义的).(有趣的是,如果一个人一开始就诚实地交代了自己的动机,人们的判断就会变得温和,因为这消除了纯粹利他主义带来的‘不劳而获的社会回报’。)” 根据最后一段中的“But if the result is more kindness in the world, maybe we can forgive a little mixed motivation.(只要行为能给世界带来更多善意,我们或许可以谅解带有复杂动机的善意。)” D Whether it’s a cup of coffee or tea, many people look for a caffeine (咖啡因) fix to kick-start their day. During waking hours, caffeine helps improve concentration. But how does it influence sleep? “A person’s sleep is unique to his body type, health and age,” said Lauri Leadley, the founder of the Valley Sleep Center in Arizona. “Everyone is genetically (基因地) programmed to follow the rising and setting of the sun. But caffeine can break this natural sleep-wake habit, influencing sleep.” According to a 2022 review, adenosine levels are higher at night, meaning people feel sleepy by bedtime. Having caffeine controls it, which makes it difficult for people to fall asleep. Caffeine also controls other chemicals produced in the body. “When we have caffeine during the day, by nighttime it causes a fall in melatonin (褪黑激素), something that improves sleep, which is one of the reasons why sleep is influenced,” said Dr. Peter Polos, a sleep medicine specialist. “Once in the body, caffeine remains for several hours, taking about 6 hours for half of its influence to disappear,” said Leadley. A 2013 study divided people into three groups, with people drinking caffeine 6 hours, 3 hours or immediately before bedtime. Even those who stopped drinking 6 hours before bed had their sleep cut by a whole hour. However, caffeine doesn’t just influence how long you sleep but how well you sleep. “Studies show caffeine cuts down slow-wave sleep, the period of deep, restful sleep that leaves us feeling lively in the morning,” Polos said. It’s a period of sleep that seems to play an important role in growth, memory, and disease prevention. Most adults spend 10% to 20% of sleep on slow-wave sleep. However, the influence of caffeine on a person is subject to things including age and genes. One 2017 review in the Sleep Medicine Reviews suggests that people become more sensitive to caffeine as they get older, while differences between people of the same age could be related to genetic differences. 12. How does caffeine influence people’s sleep? A. By changing people’s genes. B. By increasing slow-wave sleep. C. By cutting chemicals like melatonin. D. By righting people’s sleep-wake cycle. 13. Why does the author mention the 2013 study? A. To introduce a new idea. B. To back up Leadley’s argument. C. To compare different studies. D. To show the bad influence of caffeine. 14. What can we infer about slow-wave sleep? A. It is important to human health. B. It influences the length of sleep. C. It takes up less and less of sleep time. D. It can be increased by more daytime rest. 15. Which section of the newspaper is the text probably taken from? A. Economy B. Culture C. Health D. Education 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第三段“When we have caffeine during the day, by nighttime it causes a fall in melatonin (褪黑激素), something that improves sleep, which is one of the reasons why sleep is influenced. (白天摄入咖啡因后,到了晚上它会导致褪黑激素水平下降,而褪黑激素是改善睡眠的物质,这是睡眠受影响的原因之一)”可知,咖啡因通过降低褪黑激素水平影响睡眠。故选C项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段““Once in the body, caffeine remains for several hours, taking about 6 hours for half of its influence to disappear,” said Leadley. A 2013 study divided people into three groups, with people drinking caffeine 6 hours, 3 hours or immediately before bedtime. Even those who stopped drinking 6 hours before bed had their sleep cut by a whole hour. 根据第五段“Studies show caffeine cuts down slow-wave sleep, the period of deep, restful sleep that leaves us feeling lively in the morning. (咖啡因会减少慢波睡眠,而慢波睡眠是一段深度、宁静的睡眠,让我们在早上感到充满活力)”以及“It's a period of sleep that seems to play an important role in growth, memory, and disease prevention. (慢波睡眠阶段似乎在生长、记忆和疾病预防方面发挥着重要作用)”可推知,慢波睡眠对人体健康很重要。故选A项。 Being true to yourself is very crucial in life. It’s vital to know who you are, what you trust, and what makes you happy. ____16____. It extends to an important part of our social lives: enabling others to be themselves and accepting them for who they are. ____17____ We may attempt to control their actions or influence their way of thinking. However, this only creates conflict and can harm relationships. Instead, we should focus on accepting others as they are and allowing them to express themselves freely. ____18____ It implies we should respect their individuality and value their unique viewpoints. Likewise, we should also struggle to be true to ourselves and not let others direct our actions or beliefs. It’s all too easy to get trapped in trying to please everyone. But in doing so, we risk losing touch with our own true selves. ____19____. Being true to oneself and allowing others to be themselves isn’t always easy. However, it is a key aspect of building healthy relationships and personal well-being. ____20____ It demands self-awareness, empathy, and a willingness to accept others unconditionally. In conclusion, the key to happiness and healthy relationships is to let yourself be yourself and others themselves. By embracing individuality and respecting diversity, we can create a more harmonious and inclusive world. A. However, this doesn’t stop at just being true to yourself. B. We needn’t understand their background and experiences. C. Many of us are trying to reshape others to meet our own expectations. D. It is essential for leading a fulfilling and meaningful life. E. This doesn’t mean we have to agree with everything they say. F. That is why people have different ways of thinking and behaving. G. We might lose sight of our own values and desires. A 17. C 18. E 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 由上文“Being true to yourself is very crucial in life. It’s vital to know who you are, what you trust, and what makes you happy. (忠于自我在生活中至关重要。知道自己是谁、信任什么以及什么让你快乐是至关重要的。)”以及下文“It extends to an important part of our social lives: enabling others to be themselves and accepting them for who they are. (它延伸到了我们社交生活的一个重要部分:允许他人做自己,并接受他们本来的样子。)”可知,本空要说忠于自我不仅局限于个人层面,还延伸到了社交层面,A选项“However, this doesn’t stop at just being true to yourself. (然而,这并不仅仅停留在忠于你自己。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“this”指代上文的“Being true to yourself”,且该选项中的“doesn’t stop at just”与下文的“extends to”相呼应,表示话题的递进与拓展。 【17题详解】 由下文“We may attempt to control their actions or influence their way of thinking. (我们可能会试图控制他们的行为或影响他们的思维方式。)”可知,本空应引出人们试图改变他人的现象。C选项“Many of us are trying to reshape others to meet our own expectations. (我们中的许多人试图重塑他人以满足自己的期望。)”中的“reshape others”与下文的“control their actions or influence their way of thinking”相呼应。 【18题详解】 由上文“Instead, we should focus on accepting others as they are and allowing them to express themselves freely. (相反,我们应该专注于接受他人本来的样子,并允许他们自由表达自己)”以及下文“It implies we should respect their individuality and value their unique viewpoints. (这意味着我们应该尊重他们的个性,并重视他们独特的观点。)”可知,本空要对“接受他人”这一观点进行进一步的解释或限定,E选项“This doesn’t mean we have to agree with everything they say. (这并不意味着我们必须同意他们所说的一切。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“This”指代上文的“accepting others as they are”,且该选项中的“doesn’t mean we have to agree with everything”与下文的“respect their individuality”相呼应,表示接纳不等于盲从。 【19题详解】 由上文“Likewise, we should also struggle to be true to ourselves and not let others direct our actions or beliefs. It’s all too easy to get trapped in trying to please everyone. But in doing so, we risk losing touch with our own true selves. (同样地,我们也应该努力忠于自我,不让他人左右我们的行为或信仰。我们很容易陷入试图取悦所有人的困境。但这样做,我们有失去与真实自我联系的风险。)”可知,本空要具体说明失去与真实自我联系的后果,G选项“We might lose sight of our own values and desires. (我们可能会忽视自己的价值观和愿望。)”符合题意,该选项中的“lose sight of our own values and desires”是对上文“losing touch with our own true selves”的具体解释。 【20题详解】 由上文“Being true to oneself and allowing others to be themselves isn’t always easy. However, it is a key aspect of building healthy relationships and personal well-being. From my perspective, students should not bring mobile phones to campus. First and foremost, mobile phones can easily distract our attention in class. Many students tend to check messages, scroll through short videos or play games during lessons, which prevents them from focusing on what teachers are explaining, and leads to a drop in academic performance. Besides, excessive use of mobile phones is harmful to both physical and mental health. Staring at the screen for a long time will damage our eyesight, and unhealthy content online may also negatively affect our values. Last but not least, banning mobile phones at school can help us develop better communication skills. In short, keeping mobile phones off campus is more beneficial for our growth and study. B We find the owl at the very edge of our woods the morning after the storm. C Have you ever questioned why someone is being unusually kind? Imagine a friend Andy, volunteers at a homeless shelter. Interestingly, the judgment softens if the person is honest about their motive upfront, as this removes the “unearned social reward” of appearing purely altruistic (利他主义的). Furthermore, people who do good merely to feel good about themselves are judged less harshly than those seeking to enhance their reputation. D Acting for self-satisfaction draws the strongest criticism. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards mixed-motive kindness? A. Tolerant. B. Indifferent. C. Confused. D. Critical. D Whether it’s a cup of coffee or tea, many people look for a caffeine (咖啡因) fix to kick-start their day. A. Economy B. Culture C. Health D.
