My Volunteering Story
The most meaningful experience I've had was volunteering at the local community library last month. Our main task was to sort out a large donation of books. The initial challenge was the overwhelming number and the dust, making the process slow. However, my partner and I developed a system: one sorted by genre while the other labeled the shelves. Seeing the once chaotic boxes transform into neat, accessible rows was incredibly satisfying.
This effort taught me the profound value behind organizing knowledge and serving the community quietly. It wasn't just about cleaning shelves; it was about building order and contributing to a shared space of learning, which filled me with a strong sense of accomplishment.

A week later, I saw a post looking for volunteers at a food drive. It felt like the perfect way to “pay it forward.”At the drive, I handed out meals and smiled at the strangers who came through. Then, as I packed up for the day, I saw him again. He was unloading crates of fresh produce from a van, looking just as surprised to see me as I was to see him.“You’re the grocery hero,” I blurted out. He laughed, shrugging. “I guess that makes you the pay-it-forward hero.”
We spent the rest of that afternoon talking as we worked. His name was Liam, and he was a chef who volunteered regularly to combat food insecurity. Before we left, he handed me a small gift bag. Inside was a Four Leaf Clover Necklace. “For luck,” he said, “and because you’ve already made someone else’s day brighter.”That was the start of something more than just a chance encounter. Liam and I kept volunteering together, and over time, we became more than just acquaintances. All because of stranger’s generosity and kindness.

M:Mrs.Anderson, I’m thinking about taking some time off. I really need a break from work.
W:Oh,the boss was just asking if you are available for next week's shifts. Are you sure?
M:Absolutely. I'll finally take that trip I've been postponing.
Text 2
W:Did you see the look on Nancy's face when she heard the news?
M:Yeah, she didn't expect take second place. It was not the result she had hoped to achieve.
Text 3
M:Hey, Fiona. Is it alright if I come around now to discuss the details of our farewell party on Thursday?
W:Oh, I'll show the foreign guests around the history museum in an hour. How about we do it tomorrow?
Text 4
M:Maria, did you track the shipment of urgent medical supplies?
W:Yes.The parcel is expected to arrive this afternoon.
M:Perfect! I'll let my patients know that
W:Well, you have a meeting at the City Hall at 3:00 p.m. Would you like me to arrange a car for you?
Text 5
M:I'’m anxious to know why I can't figure out the math problem. I've been working on it for almost an hour.
W:Why not stop to grab a coffee or take a walk?(5)That may help you spark new ideas.
M:Maybe you're right.
Text 6
W:Excuse me, the sign there says“Buy One,Get One Free”, but you charged me the full price for these two blue shirts.(6)
M:Let me check ...Hmm,the promotion only applies to items that are priced at over £20 each.
W:Oh,I see. Mine were f19.5 each.(6)I can't believe 50 pennies made a difference!
M:Yeah, there is fine print on every offer. Do you want to change them?
W:Yes.So,will I have to return them first?(7)
M: I’m afraid so.(7)The purchase has already been processed.
W: Okay. (7)Oh,I wish I'd registered the fine print earlier.
Text 7
M:It's already 9:30 a.m., and the meeting has been delayed for half an hour.(8)
W:Mr.Johnson's flight didn't touch down until 8:30 a.m.,so he's running late. We can't start the meeting without him.(8)
M:I was wondering how long we still have to wait. I'm about to grab a coffee in the break room.
W:How about suggesting he attend the meeting online instead?
M:Online? But what about the presentation?
W:Actually, the main screen in the meeting room is acting up again. The repairman was called up to fix it.Even if he arrives,we won't be able to display the presentation on the screen.
M:Then what are we waiting for?
Text 8
M:Speaking of our trip to Singapore next month, I was thinking of setting off on October 2nd.
W:Well, I'd prefer to set out a bit earlier, maybe the 1st. That way,we can have a day to rest and switch to local time after we arrive.(10)
M:That sounds good. I've looked up a few flight options. We can book a direct flight, but it's a bit expensive, around $1,200.Or there's a connecting flight for $900. We'll have a one-night stopover in Frankfurt.
W:U h...I think the direct flight would be better. It'll save us quite a few hours.(11)
M:Agreed. I'll book the direct flight for us. What about the accommodation in Singapore?
W: Let's choose a quite modern hotel with good service near my aunt's house. I've found one on Orchard Road. Its rates range from S150 to S180 a night. It's over our budget, but it's very central.(12)
M:Sounds perfect. I'll take care of the booking.
Text 9
W:Hello,Alex. What have you been up to?
M:Nothing special.A little busy, though.
W:Well, I just wanted to remind you that the deadline for the paper is Friday, September 25th.(15) Have you added the finishing touches to the abstract?
M:It's nearly done, but I’m still not sure about the second paragraph.(14)
W:Well,Mr.McDaniel thinks the abstract should highlight the main findings. Maybe you can cut out some of the complex terms in the second part. Keep it straightforward.(14)
M:Understood. I used more technical terms, but I see your point. I'll revise some of them. What about the format of the paper?
W:Mr.McDaniel said our paper should be set in Times New Roman, size 12 and double-spaced.
M:Got it.I'll send it to Mr.McDaniel's mailbox on Thursday.
W:Excellent. Plus don't forget the dinner party on the 26th.(15) It's a great chance to meet other researchers and professors in our field. You never know what connections you might make.
Text 10
When was the last time you looked up and saw a clear sky full of stars? If you live in a big city, the answer is probably:a long time ago. The reason for this is light pollution. Streetlights, billboards and even the lights in our houses block our view of the night sky and mask the stars. According to a study, 60% of Europeans and almost four-fifths of people in North America cannot see the Milky Way at night.(18) Bright lights don't just make us miss a nice view. They also affect animals, confusing them when they migrate. For example, sea turtles, which navigate by the moon, often become disoriented due to artificial lights on beaches.(19)Birds that migrate at night are also thrown off course by city lights, sometimes flying into buildings or changing their migration patterns altogether. And this type of pollution is bad for human health by disrupting human sleep patterns. Luckily, there are solutions. First, cities can install streetlights that point downward instead of spreading light in all directions.(20)Then, shops can turn off bright signs after midnight. Last, we could follow the Czech Republic's example and introduce a law against light pollution. We may see the starry night sky once again if we take action now.

(原创)I majored in Mechanical Engineering in college and what I experienced during the job-hunting season in my final year changed my life completely. At that time, I only had one dream: to join an automaker giant in my country. I dismissed other opportunities and poured all my energy into this company. I cleared the written test and felt confident about my interview performance, but the results hit me hard — I was rejected.
For days, I couldn't pull myself together, and I blamed the interviewers, my luck, everyone else but myself. Everything changed when I attended a seminar on the locus of control — the idea that you are responsible for whatever happens to you, whether good or bad. This struck me deeply and pushed me to look inward.
I realized I had always shifted responsibility outward — My parents' fault, my school's issue — never mine. When I reviewed my interview honestly, I saw the truth: I had knowledge gaps and communication weaknesses. So I worked on them. In the next interview, with better preparation and real self-awareness, I performed far better and secured a position in a company even better than the one I had originally dreamed of.
They say failure is a harsh but far more powerful teacher than success. That season, I graduated not just as an engineer, but as a student of life, learning that when you stop blaming the world and start owning your failures, you reclaim the power to build a better version of yourself.
24. What was the author’s dream job during college?
A. A seminar lecturer. B. A job-hunting coach.
C. An auto company employee D. A mechanical engineering professor
25. How did the author initially deal with his failure?
A. He accepted it and moved on calmly.
B. He held everyone else accountable for it.
C. He decided to change his major immediately.
D. He asked the interviewers for detailed feedback.
26.Which of the following best describes the author as a person?
A. Honest and reflective. B. Patient and modest.
C. Creative and ambitious. D. Independent and competitive.
27. What does the author’s experience mainly tell us?
A. Dream jobs are always worth fighting for.
B. Failure is a necessary step before success.
C. Taking responsibility for failure leads to growth.
D. Engineering majors have an advantage in job hunting.

You can use up all the storage on your phone or max out your computer's drive, but can you use up all the memory space in your brain?
“There isn't a meaningful limit to how much information the brain can store, ” said Elizabeth Kensinger, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Boston College. That's because the brain doesn't store memories as isolated files in one specific nerve cell. Instead, a single memory is distributed across many neurons called an engram — a group of brain cells connected and scattered across brain regions. Neuroscientists refer to this pattern, as distributed representation.
Paul Reber, a professor of neuroscience at Northwestern University, explained that distributed representation is part of what gives the brain its enormous memory capacity. The potential combinations grow exponentially, since each neuron participates in many memories involving overlapping neurons.
But if the brain isn't limited by memory space, why don't we remember everything? This is because the brain's memory system runs much more slowly than life happens. While information constantly streams in, only a fraction can make it into long-term storage. Reber suggested thinking of memory like a video camera that only works at 10% of its capacity; we can only remember about a tenth of the specific events, experiences, and encounters we experience.
So what determines what we keep and what we forget? Human memory did not evolve for perfect recall, Lila Davachi, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Columbia University, noted. Our memory system evolved for survival, so we prioritize what is helpful so we can navigate the world. "The memory system is built to only encode what is adaptive and necessary," Davachi said.
Far from running out of space, our brains constantly reshape what we know to help us adapt, predict and learn. So the next time you forget where you left your coffee cup, don't worry; you're not running out of space. It's likely your brain just had more important things to remember.
28.What does the underlined word "overlapping" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Partially shared. B. Completely identical.
C. Physically connected. D. Randomly arranged.
29.Why does the author use the 10% video camera analogy?
A. Memory formation is slow. B. Brain capacity is limited.
C. Cameras store more than brains. D. Encoding requires visual attention.
30.Why do people recall danger but not daily routine?
A. Emotional events activate more brain regions.
B. The brain prioritizes survival-related memories.
C. Repetition prevents routine memory encoding.
D. Repeated commutes overwrite previous traces.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Unlimited Memory, Selective Recall
B. The Brain's Unlimited Storage Capacity
C. How Digital Memory Differs from Ours
D. Why We Forget: The Brain's Selection Rule

(原创)Human brain tissues analysed last year had much higher levels of tiny plastic particles than samples from 2016, according to research that shows the potential damage caused by microplastics pollution. The study, published in Nature Medicine, examined autopsy samples from 2016 and 2024, finding that microplastic concentrations in the brain had risen by approximately 50% over just eight years. In 2024 samples, the median concentration reached 4,917 micrograms per gram of tissue — far higher than in the liver or kidney.
The study found that plastics levels did not vary much with age, suggesting people may be able to expel the harmful material over time. Researchers also analysed samples from as early as 1997, confirming a consistent upward trend. Importantly, plastic concentration in brain tissue was 7 to 30 times higher than in the liver or kidney. Among all detected polymers, polyethylene — used in food packaging and shopping bags — made up about 75% of the plastic mass found in the brain.
The research both stokes concern about microplastics and suggests potential strategies to manage them. Microplastics, often degraded from consumer items like food packaging, are seen as a growing environmental threat and have been linked to chronic conditions in human organs. Using electron microscopy, researchers observed shard-like plastic fragments as small as 200 nanometres in brain tissue.
The rise in plastic concentrations over time in the brain and liver is "simply mirroring" environmental build-up, said Matthew Campen, senior author. "Our findings provide reason for optimism," Campen added, pointing to a study on how zebrafish expel microplastics. "Plastics are not higher in older individuals, suggesting our bodies can eliminate them much like those zebrafish did."
The accumulation came from degradation of "extremely old" materials, Campen said. This suggests more attention should be paid to managing older plastic waste, not just newly produced materials. Additionally, brain samples from individuals with dementia showed even higher plastic concentrations — a finding that calls for further investigation, though no causal link has been established.
A growing body of research has raised questions about the environmental effects of microplastics. A recent study found their presence increased the spread of antibiotic drug resistance by up to 200 times, as plastics act as platforms for bacteria to exchange genetic material.
32.What does stable plastic levels suggest?
A. The body fails to detoxify.
B. Global temperatures are rising.
C. Humans can expel microplastics.
D. Environmental pollution stays constant.
33.How does the research view microplastics?
A. Fully solved. B. Harmless and natural.
C. Disease-related. D. Worrying but manageable.
34.Why is Campen optimistic?
A. Zebrafish expel plastics. B. Plastics are harmless.
C. New waste management works. D. Brain damage is reversible.
35.What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Dementia is caused by microplastics.
B. New plastic waste is the main concern.
C. Older people have higher plastic levels.
D. Further research is needed on dementia.

What does stress really do to our bodies?
When you're stressed, your body is likely to respond by building up the same biological systems that evolved to deal with inter-tribe disputes. 36 Let's dig into the science.
"The most immediate effect we see in a stressful situation is a surge of adrenaline causing an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and breathing," says Prof Kavita Vedhara, a specialist in stress at Cardiff University. 37
This was all very useful centuries ago when most of what life threw at us was physical challenges. 38 . When your body diverts all its resources to fight or flight, it's moving them away from areas such as digestion, repair and the immune system.
"Perhaps the most well-known issue associated with chronic stress is poorer immune function," says Vedhara. 39
So what can you do to get better at managing stress? One of the most evidence-backed options is learning to just stop, take a moment and slow your breathing. 40 One option is to experiment with both: negative thinking patterns and unhelpful coping strategies are often best tackled with CBT, while mindfulness-based stress reduction might be better for coping with the unavoidable.
A. But is there a downside to being stressed all the time?
B. Therefore, stress is always harmful and should be avoided at all costs.
C. This reaction can be harmful when activated too often without real physical danger.
D. This is your fight-or-flight response, designed to prepare you to address the challenge you are facing.
E. But now it's fairly rare that we need to literally run away from or physically fight the source of our stress.
F. If the stress is more prolonged and frequent, another option is psychological therapies including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
G. But chronic stress has also been shown to increase the risk of obesity, depressive illness and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

(原创)When I was a child, I drew a face. A grown-up corrected me quickly with a circle, round eyes, a seven-shaped nose and a curved mouth. I stood confused, for this cold 41 pattern felt nothing like the lively faces I knew in real life.
As I grew up, I kept wondering how to draw a real face. Once, I got a chance to ask people to draw each other following two rules: never 42 the pencil, and never look down at the paper. They could only look at their partner. After a minute, the drawings were terrible but wonderful. Why? Because they had drawn what they truly saw, not what they 43 a face should look like. They also did something 44 : they made eye-to-eye, face-to-face 45 for almost a full minute without looking away. They slowed down, 46 fully, and truly noticed another person. That was the 47 to drawing “a real face”.
Later, as an illustrated journalist, I once 48 a drawn story about how public libraries served the people. I explored every corner of the library and genuinely 49 with the staff. I found with their intentional, public-spirited 50 , those seemingly ordinary 51 served people in far more meaningful ways. Computers that I assumed were for checking out books or emails were actually 52 for people searching for jobs and housing. The sinks in the public restroom served as a laundromat and showers for the homeless. The entirely new and rich 53 contributed to my series of breathing drawings.
I do not hope everyone becomes an artist, but everyone can learn to see deeply. Slow down, 54 , and truly observe; you will rediscover love for the world and all people around you. We urgently need this 55 — to see each other and ourselves clearly, and to honor the real truth hidden in plain sight.

Tea is the world's most popular beverage after water. Globally, people drink 56 estimated 45 billion gallons of it each year in a wide range of styles.
One specific style remains 57 (close) tied to Jingmai Mountain. For more than a millennium, the Blang people, along with another local group called the Dai, 58 (maintain) ancient groves that produce black tea.
The Blang people's tea spirit 59 (base) on a real person. Around the 10th century, Pa Aileng led his people to settle in Jingmai, 60 he discovered the medicinal properties of wild tea plants and began to domesticate them. Near the end of his life, Pa imparted wisdom that is recounted by farmers here.
"I can give you cattle, but they might die of diseases," Pa is remembered to have said. "So I am going to give you tea trees, which can provide 61 (rich) for generations."
The Blang people believe that everything has a soul, a reminder to leave nature 62 (disturbed), so in tending the forests they avoid pesticides and herbicides as well as aggressive practices such as cutting branches.
New research shows the farming techniques 63 (practice) in Jingmai continue to be effective. A recent study by Minzu University of China found that tea produced from the mountain's high-altitude trees was much 64 (bitter), in contrast to tea cultivated at lower altitude.
"Jingmai Mountain is like an old tea tree, and 65 makes it special is that it has both a unique history and a powerful contemporary life force which continues to grow." says Zuo Jing, a professor at Anhui University.

My Volunteering Story
It was supposed to be an ordinary Tuesday. The kind of day you forget before it's even over. I had just finished work, exhausted, and dragged myself into the grocery store, hoping to make it through the week on $27.48—my exact budget after rent, bills, and a few extra dollars I'd scraped from my emergency jar.
I was standing in the self-checkout line, my fingers trembling slightly as I scanned each item, counting every cent. A loaf of bread. A gallon of milk. Eggs. Rice. Tuna. A few bananas. One can of beans. The machine beeped with cold finality. Total: $28.92.
My stomach dropped. $1.44 short. A gulf that felt impossible to bridge. I stared at the screen like it was mocking me. Behind me, a woman sighed impatiently, shifting her designer handbag. I took a breath, my cheeks burning, and began removing the bananas, one by one. Those yellow curves of hope suddenly looked like luxuries I didn’t deserve.
That’s when I heard the voice.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got you.”
The words cut through the fog of my humiliation. I turned around. A man in his mid-40s stood behind me, holding a basket containing just coffee and apples. He wore a navy jacket with a small tear near the collar, a beanie pulled low over his forehead, and a face that looked tired but kind. His eyes held a quiet understanding, like he’d seen this script before. Before I could speak, he tapped his card against the reader. A green light flashed. The register chimed its approval for both our groceries.
“No, no, please,” I stammered. “You don’t have to—”
“I already did,” he smiled softly. “We all need help sometimes.”
Embarrassed but grateful, I promised to pay him back, but he waved it off. “If you want to thank me, just pay it forward.”he said, and then he was gone before I could even ask his name.
That moment stuck with me. The $1.44 difference meant nothing to him, but it meant the world to me. I stood in the parking lot, groceries in hand, tears in my eyes. It wasn’t just the money — it was the reminder that small acts of kindness still existed.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
A week later, I saw a post looking for volunteers at a food drive.
We spent the rest of that afternoon talking as we distributed the food.

正确选项为C(An auto company employee),对应原文“to join an automaker giant in my country”。
B(He held everyone else accountable for it),对应原文“I blamed the interviewers, my luck, everyone else but myself”。
正确选项为A(Honest and reflective),对应作者诚实地回顾面试(“I saw the truth”)并进行自我反思。
C(Taking responsibility for failure leads to growth),对应结尾“when you stop blaming the world and start owning your failures, you reclaim the power to build a better version of yourself”。
正确选项为A(Partially shared,部分重叠的),对应原文“each neuron participates in many memories involving overlapping neurons”即每个神经元参与多个记忆,这些记忆涉及部分共同的神经元。
A(Memory formation is slow,记忆形成速度慢),对应原文“the brain's memory system runs much more slowly than life happens...we can only remember about a tenth”。
正确选项为B(The brain prioritizes survival-related memories,大脑优先处理与生存相关的记忆),对应原文“Our memory system evolved for survival...encode what is adaptive and necessary”。
正确选项为A(Unlimited Memory, Selective Recall,无限记忆,选择性回忆),准确概括了“容量无限但遗忘正常”的核心观点。
阅读D 32 2.5 获取具体信息并进行因果推断 0.6 考查考生对“plastic levels did not vary much with age”这一发现含义的理解。正确选项为C(Humans can expel microplastics),对应原文“suggesting people may be able to expel the harmful material over time”。
正确选项为D(Worrying but manageable,令人担忧但可管理),对应原文“both stokes concern about microplastics and suggests potential strategies to manage them”以及Campen的“optimism”。
正确选项为A(Zebrafish expel plastics,斑马鱼能排出塑料),对应原文“pointing to a study on how zebrafish expel microplastics...our bodies can eliminate them much like those zebrafish did”。
D(Further research is needed on dementia,需要对痴呆症进行进一步研究),对应原文“calls for further investigation, though no causal link has been established”。
A(But is there a downside to being stressed all the time?),以问句引出下文对压力负面影响的讨论。
D(This is your fight-or-flight response, designed to prepare you to address the challenge you are facing),用“This”指代前文描述的生理反应,并给出专业术语“战或逃反应”。
E(But now it's fairly rare that we need to literally run away from or physically fight the source of our stress),形成古今对比。
G(But chronic stress has also been shown to increase the risk of obesity, depressive illness and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's),用“also”引出更多危害。
F(If the stress is more prolonged and frequent, another option is psychological therapies including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)),用“another option”自然引出心理治疗。

正确形式为“an”(an estimated 45 billion gallons)。
正确形式为“closely”(remains closely tied to)。 若填close(形容词)则修饰名词,不符合语法;若填closing(动词形式)则语义不通。
时间状语“For more than a millennium”(超过一千年)表示从过去持续到现在的动作,需用现在完成时;主语the Blang people(复数)与along with...
正确形式为“is based”。 若填bases(主动语态)则逻辑错误;若填was based(过去时)与上下文时态不一致;若填has been based(完成时)则无必要。
先行词Jingmai(景迈,地名)在从句“he discovered...plants and began to domesticate them”中充当地点状语,故用where。
the farming techniques (which are) practiced in Jingmai,表示“景迈所实践的农耕技术”,practiced与techniques之间为被动关系。若填practicing(现在分词)则为主动意义;若填to practice(不定式)表将来或目的,不符合语境。
原文“in contrast to tea cultivated at lower altitude”暗示对比:高海拔古树茶与低海拔茶相比,苦味更少或更淡。
“what makes it special”意为“使它特别的东西”,what在从句中作主语,相当于the thing that。

情节要求具体,限定合理范围: 续写两段给出明确开头语:第一段“A week later, I saw a post looking for volunteers at a food drive”限定时间为“一周后”,地点为“食物捐赠活动”,动作为“报名志愿者”;第二段“We spent the rest of the afternoon talking as we distributed the food”限定场景为“分发食物过程中的交谈”。
