National Young Inventors Competition 2026
Do you have an idea that could make everyday life better? The National Young Inventors Competition invites students across the country to turn their bright ideas into simple inventions. This year's theme is "Small Inventions, Greener Living." We are looking for clever, practical ideas that anyone could use at home or at school.
Who can enter. The competition is open to all students aged 13 to 18. You may enter on your own or in a team of no more than three. Each person, however, may take part in only one entry. Students from every school across the country are equally welcome to join.
What to submit. Every entry must include a clear drawing or model of the invention and a short report (no more than 500 words) explaining what problem it solves and how it works. Entries that are mainly copied from existing products will not be accepted. Original thinking matters far more to us than fancy materials or a perfect finish.
How to enter. Upload your materials through our website before 31 May. Late entries cannot be considered, so do not leave it to the last day. A teacher must confirm that the work is your own. If you have any questions about the rules, feel free to email the organizing team at any time.
Prizes. The ten best inventions will be shown at the National Science Museum in July, and their creators will receive a certificate and a tablet computer. The single grand-prize winner will also join a week-long science camp, free of charge. Win or not, every participant will receive a digital certificate in recognition of their effort.

【答案】A 【解析】根据 Who can enter 部分“open to all students aged 13 to 18”可知,13至18岁的学生可参赛。 故选A。
22. What must every entry include?
A. A finished product ready for sale.
B. A drawing or model and a short report.
C. A video of the invention in use.
D. A letter signed by the creator's parents.
【答案】B 【解析】根据 What to submit 部分“a clear drawing or model ... and a short report”可知,每份参赛作品须含图纸或模型和一份简短报告。

The mountain was wrapped in thick morning mist when I set out to climb it. I had hoped to reach the top in time for sunrise, but now I could barely see more than a few steps ahead. The path simply melted into the grey, and my excitement soon gave way to worry.
I stopped, unwilling to go on. How could I climb a mountain I could not even see? An old man, who had been walking quietly behind me, came up and asked why I had halted. "I can't see the way to the top," I said. He smiled. "You don't need to see the top," he replied. "You only need to see your next step."
His words puzzled me, yet I had no better plan, so I began to walk again, fixing my eyes on the small patch of ground before me. One step, then another. A stone, a root, a narrow turn — each appeared just in time, as though the mountain were handing me the path piece by piece.
Lost in this slow, steady rhythm, I forgot my fear and even my tiredness. When at last I raised my head, I found myself standing on the summit. Below me the mist was breaking apart, and the whole valley opened slowly to the morning light, far more beautiful than anything I had pictured.
I have never forgotten that morning. So often we refuse to begin simply because we cannot see how things will end. Yet life, like that misty mountain, rarely shows us the whole road at once. Perhaps we are not meant to see it all; we are meant only to take the next step, and to trust that the rest will appear.
24. Why did the writer stop climbing at first?
A. He felt too tired to continue.
B. He had already reached the top.
C. He was waiting for the old man.
D. He could not see the path ahead.
【答案】D 【解析】根据第二段“How could I climb a mountain I could not even see?”
25. What did the old man mean by his advice?
A. Focus on the next step, not the whole way.
B. Climbing alone is always dangerous.
C. The mountain top is not worth reaching.
D. One had better turn back when lost.
【答案】A 【解析】根据第二段“You don't need to see the top ... You only need to see your next step”可知,老人意在劝作者专注脚下一步,而非纠结全程。 故选A。
26. Why does the writer describe the view from the summit?
A. To prove sunrise is the best time to climb.
B. To show the reward of pressing on step by step.
C. To explain how mountain weather changes.
D. To suggest the long climb was not worth it.
【答案】B 【解析】根据第四段登顶后云开雾散、山谷豁然展现“more beautiful than any view I had imagined”可知,作者借此展现一步步坚持后的回报。
27. What is the main message of the text?
A. Always plan every detail before starting.
B. Beautiful views call for an early start.
C. Take the next step even without seeing the end.
D. Never climb a mountain in thick mist.
【答案】C 【解析】根据末段“We are simply meant to take the next step, and trust that the rest will appear”可知,全文主旨是:纵然看不到结局,也要迈出下一步。
C
A new top for the price of a cup of coffee sounds like a bargain. This is the promise of fast fashion: trendy clothes produced so cheaply and quickly that we can buy them almost on a whim. Yet behind the low price tags lies a cost that never appears on the receipt. What looks like a steal at the till is quietly billed to the planet and to people we never see.
To keep prices down, clothes are often made from low-quality materials that fall apart after a few washes. Rather than being repaired, they are simply discarded. The average garment today is worn only a handful of times before it is thrown out, and mountains of barely used clothing now pile up in landfills around the world. Sorting and recycling such vast amounts of textile waste has proved far harder than anyone once hoped.
The environmental bill is staggering. Producing cheap clothing swallows huge amounts of water and energy, while the dyeing process pollutes rivers in the countries where the clothes are made. Because synthetic fabrics do not rot, the waste they create will linger for generations long after the latest trend is forgotten. In effect, a moment of cheap pleasure leaves behind a problem that lasts for decades.
There is a human cost too. The race to sell ever cheaper clothes puts enormous pressure on the workers who make them, many of whom labour long hours for very little pay. The bargain we enjoy, in other words, is often paid for by someone, or something, far out of sight.
None of this means we must give up nice clothes altogether. The real change lies in how we shop: buying fewer but better pieces, wearing them longer, and passing them on rather than tossing them away. A wardrobe, after all, is not measured by how much it holds, but by how thoughtfully it is filled.
28. What is the main point of paragraph 2?
A. Clothes today are repaired more often.
B. People wash their clothes too frequently.
C. Old clothes are usually given to charity.
D. Cheap clothes are soon thrown away.
【答案】D 【解析】根据第二段“worn only a handful of times before it is thrown out”及衣物堆满垃圾场可知,廉价衣物很快被丢弃。
29. What does the underlined word "discarded" probably mean?
A. Thrown away.
B. Washed again.
C. Given back.
D. Handed down.
【答案】A 【解析】根据划线词处“Rather than being repaired, they are simply discarded”及下文衣物堆入垃圾场可知,衣服被“丢弃”,故 discarded 意为“扔掉”。 故选A。
30. Why does the author mention water, energy and rivers?
A. To prove cheap clothes are safe to wear.
B. To reveal fast fashion's environmental cost.
C. To explain how clothes get their colours.
D. To compare the prices of different fabrics.
31. What does the author advise us to do?
A. Stop buying any new clothes at all.
B. Always choose the cheapest clothing.
C. Buy fewer clothes but use them longer.
D. Throw out clothes once trends change.
【答案】C 【解析】根据末段“buying fewer but better pieces, wearing them longer”可知,作者主张少买精买、延长使用。
D
We tend to treat forgetting as a failure, a sign that our memory is letting us down. Misplaced keys and forgotten names feel like small defeats. But a growing number of scientists argue that forgetting is not a fault in the system at all; it is one of its cleverest features. What feels like a flaw, they suggest, may in fact be a finely tuned design.
Every day our brains take in far more information than we could ever need. If we remembered all of it, our minds would soon be buried under a flood of useless details, from the colour of a stranger's coat to the exact words of every conversation. By letting go of what does not matter, the brain clears space for what does, helping us focus on the information that is truly useful. A memory that kept absolutely everything would, in the end, be almost impossible to search.
Forgetting also helps us see the bigger picture. When the small, specific details fade, what remains are the general patterns and lessons. This is why we can recall the meaning of a story we read years ago even though the exact sentences are long gone. In this sense, forgetting turns a mass of experiences into useful knowledge. Forgetting the details, oddly enough, is often what lets the meaning survive.
Perhaps most surprisingly, forgetting can help us feel better. Over time, the sharp edge of painful memories tends to soften, allowing us to move on instead of being trapped in the past. A mind that forgot nothing would also be unable to heal. Letting go, it seems, is part of how we recover.
So the next time a name slips your mind, try not to be too hard on yourself. Far from being broken, your memory may be doing exactly what it was designed to do, quietly deciding what is worth keeping so that you can live, learn and grow.
32. What is many scientists' view of forgetting?
A. It is the worst enemy of learning.
B. It happens only as people grow old.
C. It can be completely avoided with effort.
D. It is a useful feature rather than a fault.
【答案】D 【解析】根据第一段“forgetting is not a fault ... it is one of its cleverest features”可知,许多科学家认为遗忘是有益机制而非缺陷。
33. According to paragraph 2, why is forgetting helpful?
A. It frees space to focus on what matters.
B. It helps us remember every tiny detail.
C. It makes the brain work much more slowly.
D. It stops us from learning anything new.
【答案】A 【解析】根据第二段“clears space for what does, helping us focus on the information that is truly useful”可知,遗忘清出空间、让我们专注重要信息。 故选A。
34. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Painful memories never fade at all.
B. Forgetting can help people recover from pain.
C. A perfect memory would make us happier.
D. People should try hard to forget on purpose.
【答案】B 【解析】根据第四段“the sharp edge of painful memories tends to soften, allowing us to move on”及“A mind that forgot nothing would also be unable to heal”可推知,遗忘有助于人从痛苦中恢复。
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Train a Perfect Memory.
B. The Science of Reading Faster.
C. Why Forgetting Is Good for You.
D. Ways to Never Forget a Name.
Most of us know what habits we would like to build, yet keeping them up proves far harder than starting them. ___36___ The good news is that lasting change depends less on willpower than on clever planning. In other words, the trick is to design your day so that good habits almost happen by themselves.
Start ridiculously small. ___37___ Instead of vowing to read fifty pages a night, promise yourself just one page. A goal this tiny feels effortless, and once you have begun, you will often do more than you planned. Tiny beginnings are easy to repeat, and it is repetition, not size, that builds a habit.
___38___ If you want to exercise in the morning, lay out your sports clothes the night before. Making the good habit easy to start, and the bad one harder, quietly tips the balance in your favour. Small changes to what surrounds you can quietly make the right choice the easy one.
Tie the new habit to something you already do. ___39___ For example, you might review new words right after brushing your teeth. The old routine acts as a reminder, so you rely far less on memory. Over time the two actions blend into a single, almost automatic routine.
Finally, do not let one slip become a collapse. ___40___ What matters is not being perfect, but returning to the habit again and again until it becomes part of who you are. Progress, not perfection, is what slowly turns an effort into a habit.
A. Your surroundings shape your actions more than you think.
B. Missing a single day will not undo your progress.
C. The biggest mistake is trying to change too much at once.
D. A new habit sticks best when it has a clear anchor.
E. A small win still builds real momentum.
F. Talent, not habit, decides how far we can go.
G. Buying new gear is the surest way to succeed.

I would much rather have stayed in bed. After my mother gently reasoned with me, however, I ___42___ agreed to go along. Deep down, I expected nothing but a long and tiring morning.
We arrived at a ___43___ hillside where hardly anything grew. An old man ___44___ each of us a young tree and a heavy spade. ___45___ the people around me, I began to dig a hole in the stony ground, trying not to look as clumsy as I felt. The dry earth was packed hard, and dust rose with every push of the spade.
The work turned out to be far ___46___ than I had imagined. Before long my back ached and ___47___ rose on my palms. When the pain grew sharp, I almost wanted to ___48___ . But the classmates beside me kept ___49___ me on, telling me that the worst was nearly over. Their steady encouragement somehow made the heavy work feel lighter.

Possible Version(约100词)
Dear Chris,
I was delighted to hear that our class is going to turn this term's photos into an English memory book, and I'm writing to share a suggestion and offer some help.
First, why not add a short English caption under each photo? A line or two explaining when and where it was taken would help everyone recall the happy moments and make the book far more meaningful to read.
What's more, I would love to take on the writing and editing of these captions myself. As I enjoy writing in English and once helped edit our class wall newspaper, I'm confident I can do the job well. Please let me know what you think.
Yours,
Li Hua

It was raining hard one evening as Tom walked home from school, the street lamps glowing faintly through the heavy curtain of rain. Hurrying along the empty pavement, he suddenly caught a weak, trembling cry coming from beneath a tree. There, soaked to the skin and shaking with cold, crouched a small brown dog, with no collar and no owner anywhere in sight. Its thin body shivered violently, and its eyes seemed to beg him for help.
Tom could not bring himself to walk past. Cars rushed by, throwing up sheets of water, yet not one of them slowed down for the helpless animal. He bent down, gently gathered the little dog into his arms, tucked it inside his coat, and ran the rest of the way home. All along the road he kept whispering to it softly, trying to calm its frightened heart. He had never kept a pet before, yet he simply could not leave it behind.
When he stepped through the door, his mother was startled to see the wet, dirty creature pressed against his chest. "Tom, we really can't keep a dog," she said gently. "Somewhere out there, someone may be searching for it right now." Tom knew in his heart that she was right, yet the thought of turning the dog back out into the storm was more than he could bear.
That night he dried the shivering dog with a warm towel and shared with it some bread and milk. Little by little, the trembling stopped, and the dog even licked his hand, as if to say thank you. By the time it curled up and fell asleep in a cardboard box, Tom had quietly made up his mind: he would do everything he possibly could to find its owner. Lying awake that night, he kept wondering who could possibly be missing such a gentle little dog.
Possible Version(约180词)
Early the next morning, Tom made some posters and put them up around the neighbourhood. On each one he carefully drew the little dog and wrote down his phone number. After school, he went from shop to shop, asking the owners and the postman whether anyone had lost a brown dog. Day after day, he took good care of his new friend, feeding it, walking it, and keeping it warm. Although no one called at first, Tom refused to give up, believing that somewhere a worried owner was still searching for it.
Several days later, just as Tom was beginning to lose hope, the doorbell rang. An old man stood at the door, his eyes filling with tears the moment the little dog rushed joyfully into his arms. The dog had slipped away during the storm, he explained, and he had searched the streets for it every single day. To show his thanks, the old man invited Tom to visit the dog whenever he wished. Watching the happy pair walk off together, Tom felt a warmth in his heart that no rain could ever wash away.

21. Who is allowed to enter the competition?
A. Students between 13 and 18 years old.
B. University students under twenty-five.
C. Teams of four or more classmates.
D. Anyone who has invented a product before.
22. What must every entry include?
A. A finished product ready for sale.
B. A drawing or model and a short report.
C. A video of the invention in use.
D. A letter signed by the creator's parents.

25. What did the old man mean by his advice?
A. Focus on the next step, not the whole way.
B. Climbing alone is always dangerous.
C. The mountain top is not worth reaching.
D. One had better turn back when lost.
26. Why does the writer describe the view from the summit?
A. To prove sunrise is the best time to climb.
B. To show the reward of pressing on step by step.
C. To explain how mountain weather changes.
D. To suggest the long climb was not worth it.
27. What is the main message of the text?
A. Always plan every detail before starting.
B. Beautiful views call for an early start.
C. Take the next step even without seeing the end.
D. Never climb a mountain in thick mist.

29. What does the underlined word "discarded" probably mean?
A. Thrown away.
B. Washed again.
C. Given back.
D. Handed down.

33. According to paragraph 2, why is forgetting helpful?
A. It frees space to focus on what matters.
B. It helps us remember every tiny detail.
C. It makes the brain work much more slowly.
D. It stops us from learning anything new.
34. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Painful memories never fade at all.
B. Forgetting can help people recover from pain.
C. A perfect memory would make us happier.
D. People should try hard to forget on purpose.

Early the next morning, Tom made some posters and put them up around the neighbourhood.
Several days later, just as Tom was beginning to lose hope, the doorbell rang.
