Yang Li, a native Miao woman passionate about embroidery, owns a folk culture product shop that sells Miao embroidery, batik cloth, and silver jewelry. At first, the small shop struggled as there were many similar products on the market. Yang realized the need for a unique brand to stand out from the competition. During a hike in Mount Fanjing in July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf. This gave her an idea:" There are leaf - vein bookmarks and leaf - vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf - vein embroidery yet?"
Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. Yang Li collected thousands of leaves from Mount Fanjing and processed them by steaming, boiling, and tanning them to expose their veins. While the leaves become soft, they are also extremely fragile. The biggest challenge was improving the flexibility of the leaves. After consulting local expert Shen Min, she learned that soaking them in acidic water could make them tough enough for embroidery.
Through continuous learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece of leaf - vein embroidery, which perfectly combines traditional embroidery patterns with the natural textures of the leaves. By adding traditional designs from the Miao, Tujia, and Dong ethnic groups, she produced art that exhibits the unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery with contemporary craftsmanship. Yang notes that typically, only those with decades of embroidery experience can independently complete the entire leaf - embroidery process. Fewer than 20 people in Tongren have been able to do so from 2011 to now.
Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid - off female workers, rural women, and people with disabilities." Guizhou is a province with a large number of ethnic groups and has a long history of ethnic embroidery skills," she say." I will keep doing the leaf - vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful."
24. What inspired Yang Li to create leaf - vein embroidery?
A. Her love for Miao embroidery.
B. The discovery of a special leaf.
C. An accidental injury to her hand.
D. A decrease in her shop's eamings.
25. What is the biggest challenge for Yang Li?
A. Softening the leaves.
B. Exposing veins of leaves.
C. Collecting suitable leaves.
D. Making leaves more flexible.
26. What do we know about Yang Li's leaf - vein embroidery?
A. It is costly to complete a single piece.
B. It is a unique combination of artistic elements.
C. It is well - received by international consumers.
D. It is demanding for cooperation between craftsmen.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Yang Li?
A. Creative and dedicated.
B. Ambitious and cautious.
C. Passionate and humorous.
D. Optimistic and considerate.

(2026山东潍坊开学考试) The potato : Mash it, bake it, fry it ... No matter how you deal with it , the potato is the very example of all that is ordinary . And yet it has long harbored a mystery. Scientists found that certain genes suggested that potatoes were more closely related to tomatoes , while other genes gave the impression that potatoes and Etuberosum (茄科植物) had the closer relationship . Which one was it?
A new study in Cell offers the answer. Researchers led by botanist Sandy Knapp discovered that the potato genes originated in the Americas where an ancient hybridizing event between the ancestors of tomatoes and Etuberosum occurred around 9 million years ago. This is when the Andes Mountains were forming. This rare hybridization created a new plant with a unique ability that neither of its parent plants has; forming underground tubers (the part we eat)." They ' re a way for a plant to store starch (淀粉)," Knapp says ," and , in a way , survive seasons which are not good for growing ."
Understanding the potato ' s origins , specifically the key genes inherited (遗传而得) from each parent group that control tuber formation opens new possibilities ."We can use the tomato or Etuberosum to perhaps do some genetic engineering to improve the potato," Knapp says. One such improvement would enable farmers to grow potatoes resistant to pests, a changing climate, and other environmental challenges. Put simply," The tomato can be the future of the potato," says Zhiyang Zhang, a plant genetics Ph. D .student and lead researcher of the study.
The origin of potatoes offers much food for thought. You had two things and something completely different emerged. Through hybridization, you can generate many new combinations in a short time. And you can generate more species to adapt to changeable environments." Hybridization is a real force in evolution that allows of the release of variation," Knapp explains." Of course, not all hybridizing events have produced results as wildly successful as the potato. But we're quite lucky in this case that this one worked."
28. What remained uncertain about potatoes at first?
A. Their genetic origin.
B. Their plain look.
C. Their various relatives.
D. Their serving methods.
29. What can underground tubers function as?
A. The plant holder.
B. A nutrition provider.
C. A new parent plant.
D. The season indicator.
30. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Potatoes would be in greater need.
B. The farming approach goes greener.
C. The genetic engineering is improving.
D. Potatoes would become more adaptable.
31. What does Knapp think of hybridization?
A. Its success relies on luck.
B. Its operation is easy to learn.
C. It helps create diverse species.
D. It is worth applying worldwide.

(2026湖南怀化开学考试) A recent study reveals that the ability to see things from others ' perspectives (观点) may augment creativity . Researchers from the University of Vienna conducted experiments with young Chinese adults to examine how different types of empathy relate to creative thinking and achievement.
The study measured two kinds of empathy: cognitive empathy (understanding others ' points of view ) and emotional empathy ( sharing others ' feelings ). Participants completed questionnaires about their empathic tendencies and reported their creative activities over the past year, such as writing, inventing, or artistic pursuits. Researchers also analyzed long - term data from China's Gene - Brain - Behavior Project to track creative development.
Results showed that people with stronger cognitive empathy engaged in more creative activities and achieved greater success in fields like visual arts, science, and writing. Interestingly, emotional empathy didn't show the same connection to creativity. The benefits of perspective - taking appeared strongest in areas requiring innovative thinking rather than technical skills like music performance.
Further analysis suggested that understanding different viewpoints might stimulate creativity by exposing individuals to diverse ways of thinking. However, the emotional aspect of empathy didn't contribute similarly, possibly because it required mental energy that could otherwise be used for creative work. The findings highlighted how developing our ability to see through others ' eyes might be an effective way to boost creative potential , especially in fields that value novel approaches and solutions .
Whatever the case, the findings suggest that increasing your ability to take someone's perspectives might be a good thing for your creativity. Fortunately, empathy can be cultivated through deliberate effort. One effective method is to engage with books or watch TV or films and mentally place yourself in the characters ' shoes , thereby building your perspective - taking muscles . You can also build empathy by interacting with people who are different from you in some way, while being curious about their inner life and deeply listening to their perspectives.
32. What doestheunderlined wordaugment "in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Put off. B. Call for .C. Hold back D. Add to.
33. Why is cognitive empathy linked to greater creative achievement?
A. It shares others ' emotional experiences.
B. It introduces different thought processes.
C. It offers mental energy among innovators.
D. It helps individuals master technical skills.
34. How can people develop empathy?
A. By role - imagining.
B. By exposing the inner world.
C. By working out.
D. By comparing backgrounds.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. The Science of Creativity: How It Unlocks Empathy
B. The Mental Process of Seeing Through Others ' Eyes
C. Understanding Others: The Key to Your Next Big Idea
D. Seeing Differently Rarely Means Thinking Differently

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs Crouch was a scary teacher. She had a hard, serious face and a disposition (性情) as cold as ice. If a student wasn’t listening, she’d take off her shoe and bash it on the table. Other times, she’d walk around the room and slam a ruler on a child’s desk if they were daydreaming.
We hated her class. My friends Johnny, Katy and I were good kids, but we liked to laugh now and then. That was a bad idea in Mrs Crouch’s English class. “Is something funny?” Mrs Crouch would say. “Perhaps you’d like to share with me how funny it is over lunchtime while you catch up with the work you’re already behind in.”
No one ever saw her smile, and there were stories about what her problem was. “Maybe she doesn’t have any friends,” one kid would say. “Maybe her husband left her,” another would say.
We found out sometime later, that Mrs Crouch, indeed, had a problem. Some years before, her little daughter had a terrible illness and passed away and it seemed Mrs Crouch had never really been able to get past the pain.
But did this give her an excuse to be mean? I’m sure Mr Jones, who taught history, had some problems too, but he was never mean to us.
Anyway, the years passed and we enjoyed all our classes – except Mrs Crouch’s. Mr Jones’ history class was particularly fun. But, as our grades became more important, we noticed that our marks for history and some others were not so great, while in English, everyone was getting top grades – even the weaker kids. I asked Ben, who was known to be a terrible student, how he was doing so well in English. “It’s a secret,” he said. Eventually, I found out he was getting help outside of school time. And it was from none other than Mrs Crouch! She was using her own time to help the kids who needed it! Maybe she wasn’t so bad after all.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a local high school student. I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer for the upcoming international marathon in our city.
I believe I’m well qualified for this role. First, I’m fluent in English, which will help me communicate smoothly with foreign participants. Besides, I’m familiar with the city’s roads and scenic spots, so I can offer clear directions and information. Most importantly, I’m outgoing, patient and ready to help whenever needed.
I would greatly appreciate the chance to contribute to this event. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 参考范文(读后续写)
One day, Johnny, Katy and I were walking down the corridor when a bully called Jack and his mean friends followed closely behind. They blocked our way and started laughing at us, calling us names. My heart raced, and Johnny stepped forward to protect Katy, but Jack pushed him roughly against the wall. We felt helpless, and no other students dared to stop them.
“How dare you!” Mrs Crouch’s voice cut through the tension. She marched over with her usual serious look, and the bullies froze immediately. She scolded Jack and his friends sharply, telling them to apologize at once. After they ran away, she turned to us, her voice softening slightly. “Are you all right?” she asked, and for the first time, we saw a faint, gentle smile on her face. That moment, we realized she had always cared about us in her own way.
