On the morning of April 20th, I woke up in a panic (恐慌), thinking it was 6 am, but in reality, it was still 3 am. I had a vivid dream where I had overslept. This kind of dream often occurred before important events. Even though I knew I was well-prepared, I couldn’t shake off the worry. After a restless sleep filled with more anxious dreams, my alarm finally went off.
I met my friend Jenny and we took an Uber to the race site. The first half marathon was unknown to us. The race began, and we navigated (穿过) through a lush forest. We celebrated each mile, but after some tough uphill sections, I began to worry about making it through. As we approached the halfway point, we were cheered on by other runners, which encouraged us further. The downhill journey back was amazing, and we cruised through the second half, deciding to hold hands and cross the finish line together. To our surprise, we won our age and gender group!
After the race, we were overjoyed but faced a minor problem — no cellphone service to call an Uber back. Luckily, we met Lisa, Amy, and Robin, fellow runners who offered us a ride. During the car ride, we shared stories about running and life. They inspired me with their passion for running and traveling the world. I loved how running was a universal language that connected people with shared goals of being outdoors and meeting new people. Their attitudes showed me that adulthood could be full of surprises and joy.
The half marathon has taught me that the best experiences do not come from the familiar and safe. I’ve realized that I’ll be able to overcome many other unknown challenges of adulthood. I don’t know what they are yet, but my new friends have shown me that adulthood has many beautiful surprises waiting. I can’t wait to see what the next 13.1miles of life will bring.

Since Born to Run, a book about long-distance barefoot runners in Mexico, was published in 2009, walking barefoot has gained popularity around the world, again. Over the years, a growing number of studies continues to show that going barefoot can increase foot strength, improve balance and reduce risk of falls.
A recent study, which focuses on improving the design of modern footwear, has even found that our shoes have affected our movements and even changed the structure of our feet. “For example, most shoes have a quite narrow toe box,” it writes. “It means our toes are pressed together and we can’t use our feet naturally. This may contribute to poor balance and even arch collapse (扁平足) over time.”
While those studies about the barefoot movement are promising, don’t throw out all of the shoes just yet, warn other researchers. They argue that switching (切换) to barefoot walking too quickly can be a recipe for injuries since our feet have adapted to them and have lost some of their strength. Plus, our feet are now very sensitive to anything but smooth, soft ground.
“That’s like having your arm in a cast (石膏) for years, ”says John Mercer, professor at the University of Nevada. “Then take it off, and the first thing you do is go out and play a game of tennis.”
Instead, Mercer recommends starting slow. “First, try walking around the house and outside on a soft surface. Then, go for a short walk around the block. Add a bit more distance each week,” he suggests. “Your feet will tell you when you’ve had enough. If you experience any sharp pain, stop.”
28. What does the new study most probably aim to do?
A. Show the benefits of barefoot walking. B. Warn the risk of walking without shoes.
C. Provide guidelines for barefoot walkers. D. Study the problems of modern footwear.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined words “be a recipe for” in paragraph 3?
A. Lead to. B. Keep track of. C. Take advantage of. D. Get through.
30. What does John Mercer mean?
A. We can protect our feet with a cast. B. We must toughen up our feet gradually.
C. We should go for other exercises first. D. We have to do warm-up exercises each time.
31. In which section of a newspaper will this text most probably appear?
A. Literature. B. Technology. C. Sports. D. Environment.
D
An experiment which saw salad seeds sent into space has given hope for the future of growing food on another planet, according to a recently-published study.
The findings have appeared after two kilograms of seeds spent six months on board the International Space Station (ISS) with the astronaut, Tim Peake, as part of his Principia mission.
There, the seeds could have absorbed up to 100 times more radiation (辐射) than on Earth while being influenced by the violent shaking from the stresses of space travel.
When the seeds returned to Earth in 2016, 600,000 children from schools across Britain took part in an experiment, supported by the UK Space Agency, to plant them and monitor their growth, comparing it to that of seeds that had remained on Earth.
The results showed that, while the space seeds grew more slowly and were more sensitive to ageing, they were still able to survive.
Peake said, “When humans travel to Mars, they will need to find ways to feed themselves, and this research helps us understand some of the biology of seed storage and germination (发芽) which will be important for future space missions.”
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) tasked 8,600 schools and groups across Britain with taking part in the controlled study and recording their results as a scientist would.
It was part of a project called Rocket Science, led by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, in partnership with the UK Space Agency.
RHS manager Alana Cama said, “The Rocket Science experiment opened a window into space biology and allowed young people to be at the forefront of creative research.”
“This research project did more than just inspire; it furthered our understanding of the challenges around growing plants in unusual environments and the possibility of growing food on long-term space missions in the future. Inspiring a new generation of botanists and biologists will remain our goal to enrich everyone’s lives through plants.”
32. What do the findings of the experiment indicate?
A. Salad seeds sent into space turned out to be a failure.
B. Astronauts successfully grew salad seeds on Mars.
C. The future of growing plants in space looks bright.
D. The radiation makes it impossible for plants to survive.
33. Which word can be filled in the blank to complete the research steps?
carry the seeds into space
→
bring them back to Earth
→
______ the growing state
→
make comparisons
A. Update. B. Observe. C. Protect. D. Improve.
34. Unlike those on Earth, the seeds sent into space ______.
A. can grow 100 times larger in size B. provide enough food for astronauts
C. stop growing when returning to Earth D. are more likely to show signs of ageing
35. What can we learn from what Alana Cama said?
A. Growing plants in unusual environments is no longer a challenging task.
B. A new generation of botanists and biologists takes the lead in the research.
C. The project inspires the interests of the young generation in creative fields.
D. The exploration of growing food in space is the central mission in the future.

It was four weeks before New Year, and our youth group wanted to do something together as a New Year project for our community. The concept was great, but none of us seventeen-year-olds had any idea what to do.
“Maybe we could have a food drive to help the homeless,” John suggested at our Sunday night meeting. “But we have done that many times”, answered Brian with a frown.
Ten minutes passed without any proposal good enough to win our hearts. Finally I decided to speak. “Why don’t we think about our project for a few days and then come back with three or four suggestions we can vote on?” Everyone agreed to wait a week before deciding.
I knew time was running out to get something going before New Year, but I had no clue what we should do. During the following week, one idea after another ran through my mind, but I was still indecisive.
Thursday after school, I wandered into the kitchen as my dad prepared for dinner. Sensing my uneasiness, he asked what troubled me without even looking up. “Well... it...” I let out a long breath. “Our youth group wants to do something for New Year, but we don’t know what to do...”
“Hmm.” My dad thought out loud. “There’s a seniors’ home I’ve worked with close to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The residents don’t get out much around New Year with the snow and ice. It might be an idea to take them out to see the New Year lights around here.”
I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular(绚丽的)New Year light displays in our neighborhood. To be honest, I never thought about that, but it might just work.

【原文】W: Hello, this is Monica Wood. I booked two tickets for the concert on Friday through your website. I just found out I have to work late that day, so I can’t make it. Could I change them to Saturday instead?
M: Wait a minute, Ms. Wood. Let me pull up your order. Oh, I’m sorry, but tickets for Friday are already printed and ready for pickup. We can’t make changes once they’re prepared.
W: Is there any way I could just exchange them at your front desk?
M: I’m afraid not. What you can do is come to pick them up as planned, then give them to a friend who can go in your place.
W: That’s a bit difficult. Could I get my money back if I don’t take them?
M: Sorry, all ticket sales are final. You can still pick them up anytime before the show starts.
W: That’s really disappointing. I wish I had known this before booking.

【原文】Good morning, class! Today we’re starting a fun project to practice news-writing skills. You’ll work with a partner and interview one of the teachers or other school workers here. Your job is to write a short feature article about them — like something in a school newspaper.
I’ve put a list on the front desk. Pick a card — each has a name, room number, and a note about the person. Some are teachers you may know, but a few work in the office or library. Everyone we chose is happy to help.
Here are a few tips. First, plan your questions together. Think about what you want to learn: maybe how they decided to work at a school, what they enjoy most, or a funny memory. Second, keep your interview short — about 15 to 20 minutes. Be respectful of their time. Finally, take notes or, if they agree, record the conversation.
When you get back, you’ll have one class period to write it. Remember, in news-writing, deadlines matter. Please hand in your work at the end of the class. I’m excited to see the interesting stories you’ll uncover.

“First, try walking around the house and outside on a soft surface. Then, go for a short walk around the block. Add a bit more distance each week,” he suggests. “Your feet will tell you when you’ve had enough. If you experience any sharp pain, stop.”(相反,梅瑟建议要循序渐进地进行锻炼。“首先,试着在室内和户外的柔软地面上走动。然后,在街区周围走一段短距离。每周增加一点距离。”他建议道。“你的双脚会告诉你何时已经达到了极限。如果感到任何剧烈疼痛,就停止。”)”可知,约翰·默瑟的意思是我们必须逐渐增强脚部的力量。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Since Born to Run, a book about long-distance barefoot runners in Mexico, was published in 2009, walking barefoot has gained popularity around the world, again.

第四节读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
Next Sunday evening, our youth group met. My fellows put forward several suggestions and I also contributed Dad’s idea for discussion. To my pleasant surprise, the New Year lights tour won their hearts. We called the seniors’ home and they were thrilled about our proposal. The following weeks, we were busy lining up everything for the tour, including the bus to drive the seniors along the planned route.
On New Year’s Day, the bus we rented arrived at the seniors’ home in the snow. Despite the cold, the snow added a magical white blanket to the neighborhood. All residents slowly found seats on the bus and the tour began. The spectacular light displays lit up their faces and I even saw some eyes filling up. Returning to the seniors’ home, they couldn’t stop talking about all they’d seen and thanked us again and again. Looking at their excited and grateful faces, we’d never felt warmer.
