What sounds are around us?
We can hear many different sounds every day, in all kinds of places! Let's explore where we hear these sounds and how to talk about them.
At home
We hear sounds like a clock ticking, a fridge humming, or a family member talking or laughing.
On the street
We hear cars beeping, bicycles ringing, people chatting, and maybe a street musician playing music.
In the park
We hear birds chirping, wind rustling leaves, children playing on swings, and dogs barking happily.
✨ Magic
Sentences:
"I can hear..."
Use this to tell others what you are hearing right now.
"What can you hear?"
Ask this question to find out what your friends hear!
1.7.2013
Great job! We can hear many different sounds every day, at home, on the street, and in the park. Today, we will learn how to talk about these sounds using two magic sentences: 'I can hear...' to tell people what you hear, and 'What can you hear?' to ask others. Let's get started!
‹#›
Let's Learn: I can hear...
Look at the picture! What can you see in the living room? Try to listen carefully.
The Clock (钟表)
"I can hear the clock."
We can see a clock on the wall. It makes a 'tick-tock' sound. That's the sound of time passing!
The TV
"I can hear the TV."
What is playing on the screen? It makes fun sounds and music!
The Cat
"I can hear the cat."
Listen to the little cat purring or meowing. It's so cute!
1.7.2013
Let's learn our first magic sentence: 'I can hear...'. Look at this picture of a living room. What can you see on the wall? Yes, a clock. So I can say, 'I can hear the clock.' What else can you see? A TV and a cat. So we can also say, 'I can hear the TV,' and 'I can hear the cat.'

TV

Phone(电话)
It goes "ring-ring"!
Dog(小狗)
It goes "woof-woof"!
Let's practice: Teacher makes the sound, students say the word!
1.7.2013
Now let's learn some words for sounds at home. Repeat after me: clock, TV, cat, phone, dog. Great! Now let's play a game. I will make the sound, like 'tick-tock', and you tell me the word. Ready? Let's begin!
‹#›
Let's Learn: What can you hear?
Look at the pictures! What sounds do you see in the park, on the street, or at home?
Dialogue Time!
A:What can you hear in the park?
B:I can hear birds singing in the trees!
What
Start with "What" to ask about the sound.
can you hear
Ask about the ability to perceive sound.
in the park
Add a place to say where you listen.
1.7.2013
Now for our second magic sentence, which is a question: 'What can you hear?'. Look at the dialogue. A asks, 'What can you hear in the park?', and B answers, 'I can hear birds.' We use this question to ask other people about the sounds they hear. Notice the place at the end, 'in the park'.

Relax and enjoy! The big waves crash on the shore, the wind blows through the air, and seagulls call out above.
At Home
Comfort and calm! Tick-tock goes the clock, the TV plays your favorite show, and the phone rings with a friendly call.
1.7.2013
Let's expand our world! Here are four different places: on the street, in the park, at the beach, and at home. What can you hear in these places? On the street, we can hear cars and buses. In the park, we can hear birds. At the beach, we can hear the waves. And at home, we can hear the clock and TV.

Work in pairs
Find a partner and take turns asking and answering questions about the sounds in the pictures.
Example
A: "What can you hear at the beach?" — B: "I can hear waves."
1.7.2013
Now it's your turn to talk! Work with your partner. Look at the pictures and ask each other questions. For example, I'll ask, 'What can you hear on the street?' and you answer, 'I can hear cars.' Now, you try with the other pictures. Ask about the park, the beach, and home.
