I had just quit my postdoctoral fellowship for a research position at a consulting firm. For my first project, I was assigned to be the note-taker for a long week of interviews. My hands ached from typing by our 10th participant — and we still had dozens to go. Maybe I could have given the academic job market another year or two of my life, I thought.
I had spent the previous decade working tirelessly toward my goal of becoming a professor — completing a Ph.D., earning a postdoctoral fellowship, and publishing 15 first-author papers. However, after celebrating my 30th birthday, I realized that no matter how hard I worked, no one could guarantee me a teaching position in a place where I wanted to live. The lack of control became too much for me.
I cast aside my academic career plans and set my sights on industry. A month into my job search, an offer arrived among many rejections: a six-figure research position in product development that allowed me to choose where I lived. It seemed to be everything I wanted, so I decided to take it and quit my postdoc. Yet, in the shadows of the observation room, dissatisfaction ate at me. I was back to the dull tasks I’d once completed as an undergraduate research assistant.
This wasn’t where I wanted to be in my career. I was ambitious — I wanted to manage projects and lead a team. I realized I had to change my mindset. I would need to let go of the idea that I was already an “expert” in my field. I had to become a Ph.D. student once again.
As I devoured (急切地读) books, blogs, and podcasts, I realized just how much I didn’t know, and how much I needed to learn. It was humbling and exciting, all at once. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed learning.
Two years and three companies later, I’m an engineer at a medical device company. My Ph.D. has proved valuable after all. It gave me the skills to succeed wherever I choose to take my career. It gave me the tools to be a student forever.

A new kind of stethoscope (听诊器) that uses artificial intelligence (AI) can detect three different heart conditions in 15 seconds. Stethoscopes are devices that medical experts use to listen to most sounds in the body, such as a heartbeat.
In the US, more than 6.5 million people have a condition called heart failure, which occurs when their heart muscle is not pumping blood properly. There are signs of the condition, including shortness of breath, but estimates show that 70% of people have the condition confirmed only after they have gone to the hospital for serious symptoms. Early detection by using this new stethoscope enables patients to receive life-saving treatment sooner.
The new device, which was developed in the UK, is the size of a playing card. Doctors put it on a patient’s chest, where it records the electrical signals in the heart and listens to the sound of blood flowing through the heart. This information is then sent to an AI system, which compares it to data from thousands of other people to see if there’s a problem. The results are immediately sent to a smartphone.
The device was tested in a study with more than 12,700 people over the course of a year. The results showed that the AI stethoscope was able to detect unusual heart activities that a doctor might miss with a traditional stethoscope. Patients examined with the AI stethoscope were also twice as likely to have their heart failure spotted. And the device was 3.5 times more likely to detect atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, and was better at detecting when one or more of a patient’s heart valves were not working properly.
The AI stethoscope does require some caution, however. The study found that the device often detected heart failure in patients who did not actually have it. The researchers who designed it said it should be used only when doctors suspect that a patient has heart problems, not for routine checks on healthy people.
43. What can we know about the new kind of stethoscope?
A. It can be used to access all body sounds.
B. It helps save people’s lives effectively.
C. It can figure out people’s shortness of breath.
D. It is able to spot many kinds of heart failure.
44. What does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. The new stethoscope’s using process.
B. The new stethoscope’s disadvantages.
C. The new stethoscope’s wide application.
D. The new stethoscope’s hidden principle.
45. How does the author prove the new stethoscope’s effectiveness?
A. By quoting experts. B. By providing data.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By offering comments.
46. What is the author’s attitude towards the new stethoscope?
A. Unfavorable. B. Unconcerned. C. Objective. D. Subjective.
D
One of the most famous experiments in social psychology is the “marshmallow (棉花糖) test,” in which a child is presented with a marshmallow and promised a second if they can resist eating the first for fifteen minutes. The ability to delay satisfaction has long been linked to future success. However, in his deeply reflective new book The Long View, social scientist Richard Fisher argues that modern society has failed this test on a global scale, becoming dangerously trapped in “living for the moment.”
Fisher’s central claim is that our ancestors possessed a “cathedral thinking” mindset — the ability to plan for a future they would never personally see, much like the medieval builders who started grand structures knowing they would take centuries to complete. Today, however, the pressures of the 24-hour news cycle, quarterly financial reports, and the instant pleasure of social media have shortened our mental horizons. We are, as Fisher puts it, “time-limited immigrants” who are consuming the resources of the future to satisfy the temporary desires of the present.
The book is not merely a critical report; it is a fascinating exploration of how we might retrain our brains to think in longer periods. Fisher introduces readers to “The Long Now Foundation,” which is building a clock designed to tick for 10,000 years, and explores the legal concepts of “intergenerational justice.” He suggests that we should treat future generations as “unborn citizens” with their own rights, rather than just abstract concepts.
While Fisher’s writing is elegant and his research is thorough, some readers might find his optimism slightly disconnected from the harsh realities of modern politics. It is one thing to appreciate the beauty of a 10,000-year clock; it is quite another to persuade a politician to prioritize a fifty-year climate goal over next year’s pressure. Nevertheless, The Long View is a necessary wake-up call. It challenges us to look beyond our own lives and consider what kind of “good ancestor” we want to be.
47. What is the main problem of modern society according to Richard Fisher?
A. People lack the curiosity to explore the unknown.
B. People are highly focused on immediate interests.
C. People have lost the ability to build grand structures.
D. People are struggling with social media addiction.
48. What is the characteristic of “cathedral thinking” as described in the text?
A. The ability to quickly adapt to the 24-hour news cycle.
B. The skill of balancing quarterly reports with social media use.
C. The willingness to invest in the well-being of future generations.
D. The preference for building physical structures over digital ones.
49. What can be inferred about the author’s attitude towards Fisher’s book?
A. Critical of its lack of scientific evidence and samples.
B. Enthusiastic about its political influence.
C. Doubtful about the author’s research methods.
D. Supportive of its main message despite some concerns.
50. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Regaining Our Future: A Review of The Long View
B. The Secret to Future Success: The Marshmallow Test
C. Why Cathedral Thinking is Outdated Today
D. Richard Fisher: The Man Who Built a 10,000-Year Clock

Over-Promotion of Scenic Spot Foods: How to Stay Reasonable?
Scenic spot foods carry local culture, offer unique tasting experiences, and help tourists remember their trips, but the over-promotion and over-beautification of these foods — exaggerating their flavors, hiding high prices, or making up “must-try” stories — have brought negative impacts on travelers. ___51___
Definitely not. Losing the fun of exploring local foods would make trips less colorful. Here are some tips on making sensible choices to avoid the downsides of over-promotion and enjoy real local flavors.
Check real reviews first.
Over-promotion often relies on polished online posts and paid ads that hide problems. With so many platforms full of exaggerated recommendations, it’s easy to be misled. Look for genuine feedback from ordinary travelers, like comments on non-commercial blogs or recent visitor shares. ___52___
Focus on real needs.
The best way to resist over-promotion is to stick to what you truly want. Though “popular foods” seem attractive, they may not match your taste or budget. That means you can ignore the noisy hype (促销广告) and choose based on your preferences.___53___Why not try a small local eatery loved by locals instead of a crowded “internet-famous” shop, or pick snacks that fit your dietary habits?
___54___
Avoid regret from impulsive (易冲动的) buys by comparing basic information. You’ll know the real price range, avoid overspending on overpriced foods, and get better value for your money — since clear information helps you make wise decisions.
Trying local foods at scenic spots is about enjoying genuine flavors, not chasing exaggerated fame. Do your part to stay away from the trap of over-promotion. ___55___You may be surprised how much more enjoyable your food exploration becomes with a rational mind.
A. Choose based on facts, not hype.
B. So, should we avoid local foods?
C. Can over-promotion be stopped?
D. Compare information before buying.
E. You can still find real local flavors that fit your taste.
F. Consider asking local residents for tips on genuine local food.
G. You’ll save money and avoid disappointment from false promotions.

Imagine a huge, beautiful island that has just become ____71____ special “shopping and business park” for the whole world. This is ____72____ happened to the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP), the world’s largest FTP by area. On December 18, 2025, island-wide special customs operations ____73____ (launch) officially. Don’t let the big words confuse you — this doesn’t mean the island is closed. It actually means Hainan is now ____74____ (open) to the world than ever before.
Think of it like this: the island is now a unique “world” with two “lines”. The “First Line” is between Hainan and foreign ____75____ (country). Here, most goods from overseas can enter Hainan with zero tariffs (关税). The “Second Line” is between Hainan and the Chinese mainland. This line ____76____ (make) sure that the special tax-free goods stay in Hainan’s “world” and are managed properly.
This smart system, ____77____ (describe) as “freer access at the First Line and regulated access at the Second Line”, allows goods, money, and people to move more freely. This helps businesses save a lot of money and grow ____78____ (sustainable).
Why is this so important? At a time when some nations are creating more trade barriers, China is opening a huge door wider. Hainan, ____79____ the full support of China’s vast market, aims to be a leading gateway for China’s opening-up in the new era. It’s not just about doing shopping; it’s about establishing a stable, transparent and predictable institutional system ____80____ (attract) high-end resources from around the world in the future.

My dad took up woodwork after retiring last month, and he turned our small balcony into his little workshop. Every evening when I got home to do my homework, the sound of sawing wood or planing (刨) boards would come through the balcony door — so loud that I could barely focus on my math problems.
I’d complained to him several times. “Dad, can you stop working when I do my homework? The noise is driving me crazy!” But he’d just smile and say, “Soon, soon. I’m almost done with this little shelf.” Then the next day, the noise would start again. Once, I even hid his favorite wood plane in my closet while he was out, hoping he’d take a break for a few days.
Last Friday, I was in a hurry to finish my English essay. I grabbed my notebook from the desk and rushed to the living room — but I tripped over the carpet and dropped it. The notebook fell open, and all the pages came loose, fluttering (飘落) onto the floor. I felt so frustrated that I sat down and almost cried. Dad heard the noise and came over. He didn’t say anything, just picked up the pages one by one and gently patted the dust off them.
That night, I stayed up late finishing the essay at the dining table. When I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water, I passed the balcony and saw Dad still working under the lamp. He was gluing something carefully, with my broken notebook next to him. I didn’t want to talk to him then, so I quietly went back to my room.
The next morning, I found the notebook on my desk. It was neatly put back together, and on the cover, there was a tiny carved pattern — a little star, just like the one I’d drawn for Dad on his birthday last year. Curious, I walked to the balcony. Under his working table, I saw a folded piece of paper — it was that birthday drawing of mine, with a small note on the back: My kid’s first gift to me. I stood there, my throat suddenly tight.
注意:(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
I reached out and took that old drawing from under the table.

W: Really? How about the mobile traffic?
M: Do you mean plan C? It provides 10 gigabytes each month.
W: That’s not enough. I need 20 GB, but 10 dollars every month is attractive. By the way. I also want the plan to have long distance call service, since my sister lives in Canada.
M: I’m afraid you have to buy an extra service for long-distance calls. That’s five dollars per month.
W: Okay. Then just help me apply for plan C and the long-distance call service you were talking about.

B. He thinks they are all predictable.
C. He dislikes the way they are presented.
B 15. B 16. C
W: So, Richard, tell us about what got you started as an independent filmmaker.
M: From an early age, I enjoyed watching films and was fascinated by directing and photography. But it never occurred to me that I could do it myself until one day I picked up my father's camera and started recording what was happening around me every day. I then worked at a local video shop that had a section of unclassifiable films. These films made up their own rules and always left me feeling as if something inside me had changed. They also proved that the medium of film could change someone's views of the world, and that made me more determined to pursue filmmaking.
W: And yet you claim that you don't make art films.
M: Even though I want to make this type of film, it is easy to produce a bad one. More importantly, I just want to express my message through understandable films using pictures and music, but not some abstract art concepts. By the way, I am not interested in art films that follow a predictable pattern.

W: Ladies and gentlemen, at the moment all I want to do is thank our performers for the pleasure they’ve given us this evening. And of course, I must express our thanks to those who’ve worked behind the scenes, especially our producer. But most of all, I want to say thank you to all of you for coming here this evening and supporting this event, especially in such weather. I think I perhaps should take this chance to make an apology to those sitting in the back rows. We’ve made some repairs to the roof, but unfortunately the wet tonight is unexpectedly heavy and we’re thankful to you for your understanding and cheerful, good humour. We had hoped that the repairs would be enough, but we were recently told that the whole roof would have to be replaced. We were sad to learn the news because it’s only five years since we replaced the roof of the church itself, and so we shall be having another concert soon, I hope. Finally, I want to tell you the good news. It is bright and a little windy tomorrow and I wish all of you would have a nice and relaxed day. You can go to the park or theatre, etc.

C. Objective. D. Subjective.
B 44. A 45. B 46. C

根据第三段中的“The new device, which was developed in the UK, is the size of a playing card. Doctors put it on a patient’s chest, where it records the electrical signals in the heart and listens to the sound of blood flowing through the heart. This information is then sent to an AI system, which compares it to data from thousands of other people to see if there’s a problem.

根据最后一段中“While Fisher’s writing is elegant and his research is thorough, some readers might find his optimism slightly disconnected from the harsh realities of modern politics.(尽管费舍尔的写作优雅,研究深入,但一些读者可能会觉得他的乐观与现代政治的严酷现实有些脱节。)”以及“Nevertheless, The Long View is a necessary wake-up call. It challenges us to look beyond our own lives and consider what kind of ‘good ancestor’ we want to be.(尽管如此,《远见》是一个必要的警钟。它挑战我们超越自己的生活,思考我们想成为什么样的“好祖先”。 )”可知,作者对费舍尔的书持支持态度,尽管有一些担忧。故选D。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是结合第一段中“However, in his deeply reflective new book The Long View, social scientist Richard Fisher argues that modern society has failed this test on a global scale, becoming dangerously trapped in “living for the moment.”(然而,社会科学家理查德·费舍尔在其发人深省的新书《远见》中指出,现代社会在全球范围内未能通过这一考验,陷入了危险的“活在当下”的陷阱。)” 故A选项“Regaining Our Future: A Review of The Long View(重获我们的未来:《远见》书评)”最符合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选A。

B 52. F 53. E 54. D 55. G
上文“but the over-promotion and over-beautification of these foods — exaggerating their flavors, hiding high prices, or making up ‘must-try’ stories — have brought negative impacts on travelers.(但是,这些食物的过度宣传和过度美化——夸大其味道、隐瞒高价或编造“必尝”故事——给游客带来了负面影响)”说明景区食物的过度宣传和美化给游客带来了负面影响,下文“Definitely not. Losing the fun of exploring local foods would make trips less colorful.(当然不会。失去探索当地美食的乐趣会让旅行变得不那么丰富多彩)”作出否定回答。空处为疑问句,承接上文弊端、引出下文观点。所以B项“那么,我们应该避开当地美食吗?”符合语境。
【52题详解】
上文“Though “popular foods” seem attractive, they may not match your taste or budget. That means you can ignore the noisy hype (促销广告) and choose based on your preferences.(尽管“流行食品”看起来很有吸引力,但它们可能不符合你的口味或预算。这意味着你可以忽略嘈杂的炒作,根据自己的喜好做出选择)”介绍了查找真实游客评价的避雷方法。空处承接上文,补充另一种寻找正宗美食的方式。所以F项“可以考虑向当地居民询问正宗本地美食的建议”符合语境。
【53题详解】
上文“Though ‘popular foods’ seem attractive, they may not match your taste or budget. That means you can ignore the noisy hype (促销广告) and choose based on your preferences.(尽管“流行食品”看起来很有吸引力,但它们可能不符合你的口味或预算。这意味着你可以忽略嘈杂的炒作,根据自己的喜好做出选择)”说明不要被流行食品的炒作所迷惑,要根据自己的喜好和需求来选择,空处顺接前文,说明该做法带来的结果。所以E项“你依旧可以找到贴合自己口味的正宗本地美食”符合语境。
【54题详解】
下文“Avoid regret from impulsive (易冲动的) buys by comparing basic information. You’ll know the real price range, avoid overspending on overpriced foods, and get better value for your money — since clear information helps you make wise decisions.(通过比较基本信息来避免冲动购买带来的遗憾。你会知道真正的价格范围,避免在价格过高的食物上过度消费,并让你的钱得到更好的价值——因为清晰的信息有助于你做出明智的决定)”说明本段主要讲的是购买前要比较信息,空处位于段首,需要概括本段主旨。所以D项“购买前比较信息”符合语境。
【55题详解】
上文“Do your part to stay away from the trap of over-promotion.(尽你的一份力量,远离过度宣传的陷阱)”说明要远离过度宣传的陷阱,下文“You may be surprised how much more enjoyable your food exploration becomes with a rational mind.(你可能会惊讶地发现,用理性的头脑探索食物会变得多么愉快)”讲述理性探店的乐趣。

故填a。
故填what。

注意:(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
I reached out and took that old drawing from under the table.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With the wood plane I’d hidden earlier in my hand, I walked over to Dad.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I reached out and took that old drawing from under the table. The paper was soft and a little yellow, but the star I’d colored with crayon was still bright. I remembered how proud I was when I gave it to Dad — he’d held it for a long time and put it in his wallet that day. Now I realized he’d kept it all these days, even when I’d long forgotten about it. I thought of all the times I’d yelled at him for the noise, and how he’d never gotten angry. My eyes started to water.
With the wood plane I’d hidden earlier in my hand, I walked over to Dad. He was sanding a small piece of wood, and he looked up in surprise when he saw me. “Dad, I’m sorry,” I said, handing him the plane. “I shouldn’t have hidden this, and I shouldn’t have complained about your woodwork.” Dad smiled and patted my shoulder. “It’s okay, kid. Want to learn how to carve a little star?” I nodded, and sat down next to him. The sound of sanding, which used to annoy me, now felt warm and nice.

As an independent filmmaker . from an early, I enjoyed watching films and was fascinated by directing and photography. But IT never occurred to me that I could do IT myself. Until one day I picked up my father's camera and started recording what was happening around me every day. I then worked at a local video shop that had a section of unclassifiable films. These films made up their own rules and always left me feeling as if something inside me had changed. They also proved that the medium of film could change someone's views of the world, and that made me more determined to pursue filmmaking. And yet you claim that you don't make art films. Even though I want to make this type of film. IT is easy to produce a bad one. More importantly, I just want to express my message through understandable films using pictures and music, but not some abstract art concepts. By the way, I am not interested in the art films that follow a predictable pattern. So Richard, tell us about what got you started.
