In the face of global warming, it’s time to praise the quiet animal heroes working in places we don’t see. Oysters (牡蛎) —a common type of sea animal—play an important role in the fight against climate (气候) change.
Oysters are saltwater animals with two hard shells. They eat tiny plants and other small things in the ocean, helping to keep the seawater clean. A healthier ocean supports more plant and animal life. As a result, the ocean can take in more carbon dioxide (二氧化碳).
However, earlier studies showed oysters can produce carbon dioxide. When oysters use things from the ocean to grow their shells, they make a little carbon dioxide and put it into water. Therefore, many people thought oysters may worsen global warming.
In 2025, a new study by Chinese scientists changed this idea. They found that oysters store much more carbon than they produce. To do the study, scientists prepared many big water boxes and put them outdoors. Then they put different numbers of oysters in each one. Oysters eat things in the sea and their waste leaves carbon onto the bottom of the sea. During 120 days, scientists recorded the growth of small plants and carbon at the bottom of boxes. From the study, scientists learned oysters store about 2.4 times more carbon than they produce when growing shells.
The ocean is the biggest place to keep carbon on Earth. It takes in far more carbon dioxide than land. Oysters help a lot in this natural process. They not only store carbon dioxide, but also provide comfortable homes for different kinds of sea animals.

Nowadays, online tools and mobile apps are widely used and become an important part in our daily life. Many people may wonder whether we can live well without smartphones.
A new book Happy Excursion Against the Digital Leviathan (《关机:离线流浪中国134天》)gives an answer through a special experience. Published by Guangdong People’s Publishing House, it records how its writer Yang Hao spent 134 days travelling across 68 cities in China with no Internet at all.

The book does not simply say no to modern technology. Instead, it raises a meaningful question for today’s world: Can we live a better life without smartphones?

I went straight to the police chief (警长) for help after I found the white elephant missing. The police station was busy, but I was led into the chief’s quiet office.
“I have lost a white elephant,” I said anxiously (焦急地).
He stood up quickly. “A white elephant! How great! Tell me everything.”
“The elephant belongs to the King of Siam (暹罗). It is a priceless gift. I must get it back as soon as possible.”
“Do not worry,” the chief replied calmly. “I shall call every detective in the city at once. They will look for the animal day and night. We never fail in such cases.”
“I can pay all the costs for the whole search,” I told him sincerely.
The chief rang a bell at once. Several detectives hurried into the room. He gave clear orders right away. Every man looked serious and fully ready for the difficult task.
The next morning, I got many different reports. One detective wrote: I saw a large animal walking beside the river last night. Another said: The elephant may have gone into the quiet countryside far away.
Day after day, more reports arrived one after another. Every time I visited the police station, the chief smiled confidently. “We are making great progress. Trust our men completely.”
Weeks slowly passed. I spent thousands of dollars on the search. Still there was no sign of the huge elephant. I became deeply worried and upset, checking my phone every hour for news.
At last, a message came unexpectedly. They found the elephant in a dark street. When I arrived, my heart sank. The white elephant had been dead for several days. All the busy work, endless reports and high costs turned out to be useless. It was easy to see that the police only pretended (假装) to work hard in front of visitors.

When people talk about the future of energy, they often imagine high-tech machines. Few would picture a huge pile of hot sand. Yet in Finland, a small town called Pornainen, is now using the world’s largest sand battery to store energy and heat buildings.
Pornainen, a quiet town of about 5,000 people, uses a “district heating” (集中供暖) system. They send hot water through pipes from a heating plant, so each building does not need its own heater. This makes heating easier to manage.
For years, Pornainen produced heat by burning oil and wood chips. This worked well, but there was too much pollution. To find a cleaner way, the local heating company turned to an unusual idea — a giant sand battery.
A sand battery is different from common batteries. It doesn’t store electricity. Instead, it stores heat. When wind or solar power produces more energy than people need, the system uses this electricity to heat sand. When heat is needed, air is pushed through the sand and warmed. This hot air then heats water for buildings.
Some wood is still needed in winter, however, the battery cuts wood use by 60%. The company leader says: “We hope to be climate neutral (碳中和) by 2035, and the sand battery is an important step toward that.”
