I was one of those children who enjoyed counting to ten in different languages while I
brushed my teeth. When I went to university,I chose to major in French and Spanish.I.cannot
say I studied particularly hard;though I did get to live in Paris and then Barcelona, where I
had many opportunities to pursue my various interests and hobbies.
I was frequently asked about what I planned to "do"with my language degree, and it
wasn't until after a decade of thinking that I finally had a satisfying response.I always take
exception to the idea that language is just a "tool"-a means to ask for directions or defend
yourself when you have trouble with the locals. It depresses me to hear people say that AI will
make language learning pointless. To me,language is not just something to be used.It shapes
the way we perceive and experience the world.
This is not a novel insight.Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf were made famous by
the film Arrival. They proposed that the structure of language informs the thinking style and
world view of its speakers, and that language determines how we see the world. The
18th-century German Romantic philosopher Johann Georg Hamann also wrote that the
features of a people's language will correspond to the direction of their mentality.
It's a matter of debate as to whether speakers of Guugu Yimithirr,a native language in
Australia, have a better sense of navigation (because of their language.I think it does.
Where we(English speakers)use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use
north, south, east and west.To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient
确定方位)themselves more skillfully than we do.
To learn another language is not just to get by a bit more easily when you go on holiday. It's
to learn to perceive the world differently,to think differently, and even to become someone
different. And that,in turn, throws light on your native language, your culture and yourself.

For US employers, offering parental leave ()when one or both parents are
allowed to take extended time off to tend to a newborn child can be a tricky issue. But it's
not the case in the UK,Germany,France and many other countries around the world, where
parents can take significant time off after a child is born, with part of their compensation
being covered by the government. The US has no such benefit. Will US employers step up to
provide this important benefit?
The Society for Human Resource Management has done a study recently. It surveyed about
3,000 employers and found that the share of employers offering paid maternity leave(带薪产假)
beyond what is required by law dropped to 35%this past year, which was 53%in 2020.The
share of employers giving paid paternity time off fell to 27%in 2022,from 44%in 2020.
For business owners, parental leave is costly. Some companies like HPE,Etsy,Dropbox
and Netflix -offer six months or more of paid leave for both primary and secondary
caregivers. But these are large companies. It's more difficult for many small businesses to lose a
key employee for an extended period of time.
If a small business has fewer than 50 employees,it doesn't need to obey the Family and
Medical Leave Act.But,thanks to the Section 45S employer credit-a relatively little-known
tax rule that was extended through 2025,if a business allows an employee to take the time off
and continues to pay at least half of their wages, the company can receive a tax credit for up to
25%of the wages paid.So that could help with the cost.
Paid time off should be given to a new parent, regardless of the company's size. It's not
only the right thing to do,but also a necessary benefit to offer in this time of tight labor markets.
Being a small employer, you can be flexible. You can figure out an arrangement that works best
for both you and your workers.
61.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By listing statistics.
B.By explaining reasons.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By analyzing cause and effect.
62.What can we know from the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.More employees in the US are losing paid parental leave.
麻一兹语丝7而北1n而
B.Paid maternity leave has greatly benefited female workers.
C.Some US companies are suffering great financial difficulties.
D.Paid parental leave has caused a range of social problems in the US.
63.Why do some US employers refuse to offer paid parental leave?
A.They believe it is too complex to carry out.
B.They think it is the government's responsibility.
C.They think it may bring them extra cost pressure.
D.They believe it may lead to unfairness to other employees.
64.What can be inferred about the Section 45S tax rule?
A.It will come into effect in 2025.
B.It aims to promote employees'basic salaries.
C.It conflicts with the Family and Medical Leave Act.
D.It encourages some businesses to offer paid parental leave.
65.What is the author's attitude towards companies'offering paid parental leave to employees?
A.Objective.
B.Supportive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Critical.

Increasingly extreme temperatures are a rising threat, but humans aren't the only ones
affected.A new study shows heat waves may also impact the physiology (of bumblebees.
Bumblebees evolved to live at high altitudes and in cold areas and have adapted to cold
regions. They use their eyesight to locate areas of flowers and their antennas to smell.
Receptors in bees'antennas pick up small smells from flowers and then send an electrical signal
to their brains so they can judge which flower to visit.
To investigate whether heat affected bumblebees'smelling ability, insect ecologist
Sabreena Nahoon conducted a study with her team. The researchers tested 190 insects from two
species common in Europe:wild bees and bumble bees and reproduced a heat wave by making
a bumblebee in a 50ml tube for almost 3 hours. After exposing bees to heat, they increased
temperature to 40C and placed them into a thin glass tube attached to a device to measure
their electrical responses.(The antennas remain electrically active for some time.)They exposed
the antennas to smells of three pleasant-smelling chemicals commonly found in flowers.
The researchers found heat exposure reduced the antenna response significantly to all
three smells, sometimes by up to 80%.Heat-exposed bee antennas failed to recover their small
smell response, even if the researchers tested them after the bees rested at cooler temperatures
for 24 hours.
“It was a clever way to uncover this pollinator(传粉者)-flower puzzle,”ecologist Sandra
Rehan who wasn't involved in the study."It's an important first step to see really what is
driving, potentially, these bee declines. The experiments reflect the current climate conditions.
40C is within the range of what's occurring currently,"she says.Future studies will test for
高一英语第8页,共10页
similar heat damage in other bee species.
Some bee species might be at higher risk than bumblebees, who can adjust their
temperature and live in groups that store food.Others, such as the carpenter bee, often live
alone,so going several days without food-either because they can't easily smell flowers or are
simply looking for food less to avoid the heat-could be harmful.
66.What plays the key role in bumblebees'picking out their favorite food?
A.Excellent sight.
B.Sensitive antennas.
C.Enough visual clues.
D.Rich food-searching experiences.
67.What did the researchers do to study the effect of heat on bumblebees?
A.They observed bees'behavior change in the wild.
B.They listed factors affecting bees'heat sensitivity.
C.They tested bees'physiological responses to heat smells.
D.They compared different bee species'temperature tolerances.
68.What did the study find about bumblebees exposed to heat?
A.It could have a far-reaching impact on them.
B.It caused permanent harm to their five senses.
C.It took little time for them to become adaptable.
D.It directly led to the decline of the bee population.
69.What aspect of the study did Sandra Rehan think highly of?
A.The completeness of the experiments.
B.The variety of the experiment subjects.
C.The reference to historical climate data.
D.The creativity of the experiment design.
70.Why might carpenter bees be at a higher risk during heat waves?
A.They have to compete for food resources.
B.They are less sensitive to temperatures.
C.They have no shared food reserves.
D.They have worse smell responses.

第一节阅读表达(阅读短文,回答以下五个问题,每小题2分,满分10分)
It was a Friday afternoon.I was riding a bus home from school. At the bus stop before my
destination,a few boys got off the bus."Bye,Big Nose!"one of them said, waving to me.He and
his friends laughed and got off the bus.y cheeks flushed(满脸通红)with embarrassment..I
knew I didn't have a tiny and delicate nose, but I had never thought of my nose as a particularly
big one.I immediately covered my nose with my hands.
I went home immediately when I got off the bus.I came to the bathroom and looked at
myself in profile (in the mirror.Oh,no!I did have a big nose!Even worse, there was a
slight bump (in my nose at the bridge.I experimented, putting the sunglasses on.They
helped hide the bump.I only could wear sunglasses all the time! Then I tried pressing down my
nose. But when I took my finger away,it regained its shape. After two hours in the bathroom,I
came out,feeling hopeless.
Days later,my family came over to my grandfather's house for dinner. When we reached,I
climbed upstairs and found Grandpa in his bedroom, staring at a photograph."Dally!"he
smiled. But his eyes looked sad.My grandma passed away when I was in kindergarten."Is that
Grandma?"I asked. It was a black-and-white photo of a young woman with short blond hair
and wide, pretty eyes. She was smiling at the camera as if she knew a wonderful secret."Yeah,"
Grandpa replied."She's so beautiful."
Grandpa added,"Inside and out.Next to you,of course.""Thanks,Grandpa.But I knew
he was just being nice. And I knew I had a big nose."You're almost a carbon copy of your
grandma,"Grandpa said."Just look at your nose. You got your profile from your grandma.
And there was also a tiny bump at the bridge of her nose,"he added.
That was the day I began to love my nose.I think my grandma Auden in some way is kept
alive through my own nose with its beautiful bump.

Dear fellow students,
I'm Li Jin,president of the Students'Union. As our school holds the campaign
"Technology Empowering Campus Life",I'm here to make an appeal to all of you.
Technology has greatly changed our campus life.Digital learning tools and online
platforms make our study easier and more efficient, and they also simplify our daily school
activities.
Nevertheless,we need to use technology rationally. We ought to make full use of it to
aid our study rather than get addicted to online entertainment.Meanwhile,we should
practice self-discipline and control our screen time.
While enjoying the convenience of technology,we should still value fine traditions.
Keep reading physical books and carry forward traditional virtues.Let's combine technology
with fine traditions to live a better campus life
