Aurora Nikula,5,is having a normal day at her nursery. She is making a cake out of sand
and mud,adding in make-believe carrots,potatoes and meat.Aki Sinkkonen,a scientist,is
watching. He's also very interested in Aurora's cake, but for different reasons."Perfect,"he
says, admiring the way she is mixing soil, sand and leaves and then putting it on her face.
"She's really getting her hands in it."
To a hygiene-conscious(注重卫生的)kindergarten,.this could be a problem,but at
Humpula daycare centre in Helsinki, children are encouraged to increase their contact with the
microscopic biodiversity. This kindergarten was included in a two-year study looking
at how biodiversity enhancements affect the microbial composition of children's skin and
saliva.
The staff dug up and installed a giant live carpet of forest floor. The plants, dead wood and
soil in the daycare centre were specially selected for their rich micro-biodiversity.Children
grow carrots, potatoes and cucumbers, harvesting and cooking what they plant. When winter
approaches, the crops fade-but the outdoor adventures do not.
A year later,it found that children who were in contact with nature had a lower probability
of catching an illness resulting from disorders in the immune system. The results support the
"old friends"hypothesis (that humans evolved alongside microbes in air, plants and soil.
The body can exchange useful microbes with the natural world to stay healthy.Without contact
with these organisms-through soil, plants, and air-immune function can become
overactive,leading to disease.
The kindergartens provide evidence of just how crucial healthy ecosystems are to human
health. As biodiversity, habitats and wild species are lost around the planet, there is huge
potential harm for human well-being.Increasing on site biodiversity can be a win-win for

Women have historically been paid less. But in the US in the 1980s,they began to catch
up fast.During that decade, the gender pay gap closed by about one percentage point a year.
Had that trend continued, the gender wage gap would have been closed by 2017.
But the trend didn't continue, and the gap remains considerable.
According to a new study from academics at Harvard, the slowdown can be attributed,
perhaps counterintuitively,to the introduction of state and federal family leave policies
政策).
The academics argue that during the 1990s,as governments began to introduce leave
policies,it was mainly women who took advantage of them.Though the leave policies might
have helped those women to stay in the workplace-instead of dropping out to have families
-those who returned saw their wages had increased at lower rates than the men.
After family leave was introduced in the US,in fact, the rate of gender wage narrowing
fell to just 0.03 percentage points per year, and has remained there ever since.
Those monitoring the process towards salary equity at work have long watched as
progress slowed in many countries around the world. In fact, that progress began to reverse
during the pandemic(大流行病).

The gender pay gap is one of the most outstanding examples of that lack of equality, and
still exists just about everywhere. In many places, especially rich countries, women earn the
same as men until they reach their childbearing years.Women who have children begin to see
their salaries slip behind their male coworkers.
Part of this is because women take on more of the unpaid labor at home, which can eat
into time available for work and energy for career advancement. But it's also because mothers
are passed over for raises and promotion, and because any absence from the workplace hinders
women's career progress, whether the break is self-chosen or backed by corporate and
government policies.
What would have happened if leave policies hadn't been introduced? The study doesn't go
into that question, except to say that if the 1980s trend continued,we would have been equal by
now.
It's possible, however, that the journey towards wage equality would have stopped either
way.If women's gains in the 1980s were made through the elimination of things like bias(
)once those less uncontrollable problems had been addressed, there would still have been an
issue with women-who are the ones to bear children and take care of them in the early
weeks because of biological factors like the ability to breastfeed, forcing them to take breaks,
whether or not those breaks were required.
8.What do we learn about the gender pay gap in the US during the 1980s?
A.It was being slowly closed.
B.It was shrinking rapidly.
C.It started to expand.
D.It remained considerable.
9.What happened with the introduction of state and federal family leave policies?
A.The process towards salary equality at work began to reverse.
B.The rate of gender wage narrowing started to fall noticeably.
C.The trend of women returning to work after childbirth started.
D.The narrowing of the gender pay gap attracted more attention.
10.What partly accounts for the slip in women's salaries?
A.The insufficient motivation women generally have for career advancement.
B.The opportunities numerous women give up for pay raise and promotion.
C.The huge amounts of time and energy women spend taking care of the family.
D.The lack of policy support from government and business corporations.
11.What prevents women from achieving equality with men in the final analysis?
A.Ignoring biases against women in the workplace
B.Giving birth to children and taking care of them.
C.Failing to require breaks for childbirth and care.
D.Lacking resources to address biological problems.

Are you worried about your data being stolen on public WiFi?Concerned about devices
being hacked on public charging points?Hesitant about scanning that QR code?Don't be:
these are fears based in myth.Experts have written an open letter to"correct a set of persistent
myths about digital risk to everyday people and small businesses".
Top of the list is to "avoid public WiFi",which many credible sources still say is unsafe.
In October,Google offered advice in a report on text scams-avoid using public WiFi
whenever possible,as these networks can be insecure and easily used by attackers. But the
experts say that "large-scale attacks via public WiFi are exceptionally rare today.Modern
products use encryption (technologies to protect your traffic even on open networks and
operating systems, and browsers now warn users about untrusted connections".
They also break the myth of avoiding QR codes-"there is no evidence of widespread
crime originating from QR-code scanning itself'-and the myth of turning off Bluetooth and
contactless capability-"wireless attacks in the wild are extraordinarily rare and typically
require specialized hardware and physical nearness."
If you regularly change your password or clear cookies ()then don't bother, the
experts add.Deleting cookies"doesn't meaningfully improve security or stop modern tracking."
Changing your password often leads to weaker passwords and reuse across accounts, which are
security“no-nos".
The letter is the brainchild of Bob Lord, former security chief for Yahoo and Twitter, who
has been annoyed by"hacklore"for some time.He said someone sent him an article that talked
about public WiFi,QR codes,USB charging stations and a few other things. And he said,"I
need to turn my eye-rolling into something productive and to share it with the world."Lord
emphasized that the advice in the letter was aimed at the public but high-risk individuals such
as activists and officials would need tailored protections. The protections that do matter for
everyone, according to the letter, are:keeping your devices and apps updated;enabling
multi-factor identity confirmation on sensitive accounts;starting to use passkeys,a new sign-in
technology that is replacing passwords.
12.What is the main purpose of the experts'open letter?
A.To warn of digital threats.
B.To correct wrong ideas about online risks.
C.To advise against using the public network.
D.To introduce advanced security technology.
13.What do experts say about public WiFi today?
A.It should be avoided by all means.
B.It is safe for sending important messages.
C.Serious attacks through it are very uncommon.
D.Its risks have increased due to modern technology.

We're all taught from a young age to say sorry when we make mistakes and to say thank
you when someone does something kind.Yet over the years,"I'm sorry"seems to have
multiplied, while "thank you"has almost disappeared. We apologize for many silly things.
Someone knocks into us-we say sorry. We miss a phone call-we say sorry. This constant
apologizing has gotten out of control.16
Of course,we should still apologize when we truly make a mistake or when we hurt
someone.17 But many apologies are not necessary. They happen automatically,
almost without thought. We do it to avoid conflict. We do it because we've been taught that
politeness matters above all else.We assume that saying sorry will make people feel good.
18 Sometimes unnecessary apologies make everything awkward. They distract
us from the real issue and even weaken our relationships. If we are always saying sorry, will
our true apologies still sound sincere?Probably not.And when we apologize for things that
aren't our fault,we only make ourselves feel worse.
Yet something changes when we start saying thank you instead and confidence grows. We
stop trying to please everyone.19It helps us value what we have and judge ourselves
less harshly. It reminds us that there is still good in the world-and in ourselves. And soon,
the people around us will notice a change in our attitude.
Replacing sorry with thank you is a small change with a big impact.20It
improves how we feel and how others respond to us.And if everyone took a moment to
sincerely express thank you each day,the world might quickly become a kinder place.
A.However,we ignore our own feelings.
B.Gratitude also shifts our perspective.
C.It needs to stop.
D.However,it doesn't always work that way.
E.This has always been true and will never change.

I'm a dedicated 4th-grade English teacher, always on the lookout for my students'
well-being both inside and outside the classroom.Among my students,Maria stood out,but not
in a positive way at first.
Unlike other lively kids in the class, she was always quiet and easily distracted.I noticed
she often pressed her hand gently on her stomach, and now and then I could hear a faint
gurgling sound.Occasionally, she would stare blankly at her desk, not responding
when I called her name.Sometimes, she'd even doze off in the middle of an activity.
At first,I assumed it was just typical behavioral issues or a lack of attention span.I tried
different teaching strategies, moving her to the front of the class, giving her more individual
tasks,but nothing scemed to work.
One day,,during a routine check-in with our school counselor(辅导员),Ms.Rivera,who
assisted students with their psychological and social development,I mentioned Maria's strange
behavior.Ms.Rivera listened carefully and nodded thoughtfully."Sometimes when a student
acts like that,"she said,"there might be something going on at home. How about reaching out
to her parents to see if everything's okay?"Her words struck me.I realized I had been so
focused on fixing Maria's behavior in the classroom that I hadn't stopped to consider what
might be happening outside of it.After our conversation,I set out to look into it further.
It turned out that Maria's family was going through a severe financial crisis. Her parents
had both lost their jobs recently, and the family was struggling to make ends meet.Maria
wasn't eating breakfast at home because there wasn't enough food, and she was too
embarrassed to ask for the free lunch program at school. She was,in fact, starving all day
sometimes, which explained her constant distraction and tiredness.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
I decided to have a talk with Maria and help her ask for free lunch.
Within just two weeks, the change in Maria was remarkable.
