Here are some fun facts about narwhals. ②Narwhals change color a few times during their lives. When they’re born, most baby narwhals are blue-gray. But as they grow older, their color changes to blue-black, while adult narwhals are usually gray with dark spots. Old narwhals are almost all white. ③Like elephant tusks (长牙), a narwhal’s tusk is a tooth. It can grow as long as 3 meters. ________. They use tusks to attract female narwhals. Narwhals also use their tusks to hit fish so they can catch and eat fish easily. And some narwhals even have two tusks! ④Narwhals are among the deepest diving (潜水) whales, reaching depths of about 1,500 meters—although some can reach depths of over 1,700 meters, according to the University of Washington. Narwhals usually stay less than 50 meters from the water, however. But they can stay underwater for 25 minutes before needing to come up for air ⑤Living in the cold Arctic waters of Greenland, Norway, Russia and Canada, narwhals don’t have a dorsal fin (背鳍). The absence (缺乏) of a dorsal fin makes the narwhal prevent heat loss and helps them to swim under the ice. ⑥Known as the “unicorns of the sea”, narwhals are really interesting animals you must watch when you take a trip to the Arctic Circle. 29. What color is a young narwhal? A. Blue-gray. B. Blue-black. C. Almost all white. D. Gray with darker spots. 30. Which sentence is the best for “________” in Paragraph 3? A. It comes out of its head. An earthquake usually causes a tsunami. The biggest tsunami ever hit land on July 9, 1958. It happened when an earthquake shook the undersea floor. The 8.0 earthquake shook 40 million cubic yards (立方码) of rocks and ice from a mountain. The landslide fell 3,000 feet and hit the water with terrible force. It caused the huge tsunami wave. The wave was more than 1,640 feet (500 meters) high and hit over five square miles of land. It also destroyed millions of trees. There were no towns in the area, so it is different from the terrible tsunami of 2004. More than 200,000 people lost their lives in 2004. However, the 1958 tsunami killed two people. These two unlucky people were on a fishing boat in the bay when the wave arrived. Another boat was carrying Peter and his wife. They jumped into a small boat and some people saved them a few hours later. Jack and his seven-year-old son were on the third boat. Luckily, neither of them died. For many years, scientists discussed the reasons for the 1958 tsunami. Some scientists said lots of rocks fell into the bay, but it was not enough to cause such a huge wave. They thought that the earthquake itself caused the wave. However, as our understanding of earthquakes and tsunamis improved, most scientists now regard the landslide as the true reason for the wave. But no one argues that the wave was the largest in the world and will keep a long time in the future. 32. Why does the writer list large numbers in paragraph 1? A. To tell us some stories of the tsunami. B. To show strong power of the tsunami. C. To give us examples of the tsunami. D. To introduce some news of the tsunami. 33. Most scientists think the true reason for the wave is ________. A. lots of rocks B. the earthquake C. the landslide D. the tsunami 34. What is the meaning of the underlined word “landslide”? A. A sudden movement of rocks and earth down from a hill. B. A large amount of water flowing quickly. C. A strong wind blowing over the mountain. D. A big wave rising from the sea. 35. Which might be the best title of the passage? A. The World’s Biggest Wave B. The Bad Results of Tsunami C. The True Reason for Tsunami D. The Terrible Tsunami in 2004 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇科普说明文,介绍了1958年世界最大海啸的形成过程、受灾情况以及科学家对其成因的研究结论。 【32题详解】 第一段列举了大量数字,如“40 million cubic yards of rocks and ice”、“3,000 feet”、“more than 1,640 feet high”、“over five square miles of land”以及“millions of trees”,这些数据直观地展现了海啸的巨大破坏力,目的是为了展示海啸的强大威力。 【33题详解】 最后一段指出:“most scientists now regard the landslide as the true reason for the wave.”,说明大多数科学家认为山体滑坡是海啸的真正原因。 【34题详解】 第一段提到:“The 8.0 earthquake shook 40 million cubic yards of rocks and ice from a mountain. The landslide fell 3,000 feet and hit the water with terrible force.”,说明地震震落了山上的岩石和冰,这些岩石和冰从3000英尺高处落入水中。 D On the first day of school, our teacher introduced himself and challenged (挑战) us to get to know someone new. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find an old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87 years old. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married (结婚), have children and then travel around.” “Are you serious?” I asked. I wondered why she challenged herself such a thing at this age. “I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I’m getting one.” she told me. We became friends. Wherever she went, she was popular among young students. She loved to talk with us and enjoyed all the attention (注意) from others. Listening to this human “time machine” was so interesting when she shared her years of wisdom (智慧) and experience with us. At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a meeting. I’ll never forget what she told us. “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only a few secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.” she said. “There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t need any talent (才能) or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding the chance in change. Have no regrets (遗憾). People usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but for things they did not do.” At the year’s end, Rose finished the college education she had begun all those years ago. One week later, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. 36. Why did Rose challenge herself to go to college at such a “young” age? A. Because she wanted to meet a rich husband and get married. B. Because she enjoyed staying with young people. C. Because she wanted to realize her dream. D. Because she planned to share her wisdom and experience with young people. 37. Growing up means stopping playing. D. Rose died with regrets. 40. What can we learn from Rose’s speech? A. The more you laugh, the younger you will be. B. Dreams can help people stay young. C. There are about 7,000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities. Are there National Parks in the UK? There are nine National Parks in the UK. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951.Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010. Are National Parks in the UK the same as those in other countries? Many National Parks around the world cover huge areas of land where nobody lives, but in the UK most of the countryside within them is useful for farming and other activities. As a result, National Parks in the UK include places where people live and work, as well as wild and beautiful areas where there is little sign of human life. Why do visitors go to the National Parks? There are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in the UK. Visitors can walk or cycle, following marked routes, and many of the parks organize activities for families. Are there any problems in the National Parks? There are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped (充斥) by visitors. This leads to overcrowded car parks and roads choked (堵塞) with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops; in popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people, making it hard for them to stay in the area. Another major problem is litter. In the parks, it is a particular (特别的) danger to animals. Broken glass can also start fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage (毁坏) large areas very quickly. How can people help? All National Parks in the UK promote (倡导) the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be protected and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time. But they can stay underwater for 25 minutes before needing to come up for air ⑤Living in the cold Arctic waters of Greenland, Norway, Russia and Canada, narwhals don’t have a dorsal fin (背鳍). (P=Paragraph) A. B. C. D. C A tsunami is a huge ocean wave (浪). The Terrible Tsunami in 2004 D On the first day of school, our teacher introduced himself and challenged (挑战) us to get to know someone new. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find an old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed, “Of course! Why are you in college at such a ‘young’ age?” I asked.
