We often see people watching micro-dramas (微短剧) on apps like Kuaishou and Douyin. These dramas have been on the rise over the past few years. In 2023, micro-dramas made 37.39 billion yuan, equal to 70 percent of the money made by China’s film industry, reported China Daily on Sept 27. Chinese micro-dramas are also going strong around the world. Sensor Tower, a US company, said that over 40 apps for watching the dramas have entered the global market. By early 2024, these apps already had around 55 million downloads. One of them, ReelShort, has been downloaded more times than Netflix on the Apple Store in the US, reported Reuters. International viewers find these micro-dramas exciting to watch, reported Xinhua. The stories are usually fast-paced (快节奏) and have many surprising twists (转折). This keeps people’s attention and makes them fun, Liu Jinlong, head of the app ShortTV, told Xinhua. The short length of the dramas adds to their popularity. Each episode (集) may last from only tens of seconds to two minutes. People can finish a micro-drama in short periods of time, such as on their way to work. Also, most micro-dramas are filmed vertically (竖向地). This allows people to watch them comfortably without having to turn their phone screen. Going forward, micro-dramas could open new doors for China’s cultural exports (输出), noted MIT Technology Review. However, one challenge to be addressed is that many of them have similar themes. The dramas should cover more topics, not just the usual ones like time travel, Li Jiang, head of Dianzhong Tech, a company in Beijing, told China Daily. 36. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. Micro-dramas. B. Apps. C. Phone screens. D. Vertical filming. 37. Which of the following are the reasons for the popularity of micro-dramas? ① Their fast-paced and surprising twists. ② Their short length, making them easy to watch on the go. ③ They are filmed horizontally, allowing for better viewing. ④ They can be watched comfortably without turning the phone screen. A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④ 38. What challenge does the article mention for the future of micro-dramas? A. Lack of funding. B. Limited audience reach. C. Similar themes among many dramas. D. Technical difficulties in production. 39. What suggestion does Li Jiang give for improving micro-dramas? A. To increase their runtime. B. To cover more diverse topics. C. To reduce their production costs. D. To change their filming style. 40. What is the best title of the passage? A. The development of China’s film industry. B. The popularity of social media apps in China. C. The challenges faced by Chinese cultural exports. D. The rise of micro-dramas in China and their global influence. D The mirror test is a way to test if an animal can recognize (识别) itself. A mark is put on an animal, then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror. If the animal seems to notice the mark, scientists believe the animal has recognized itself (and knows that the mark shouldn’t be there). The mirror test is often seen as a sign of how smart an animal is. But some scientists believe the mirror test doesn’t work well for all animals. Roosters are a good example. Scientists recently ran the mirror test on roosters by putting a mark on their wings. But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to notice the mark. So the scientists needed a different way to test if the roosters could recognize themselves. When there’s danger—like an eagle flying above—roosters make loud noise to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the noise if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they keep quiet so the eagle won’t see them. The scientists realized that they could use the shadow of an eagle to test if the roosters thought they were alone—even when they could see “another” chicken in a mirror. First, the scientists let the roosters spend time getting used to being in a space with a mirror around. Then, they took the mirror out and ran several tests by making an eagle shadow appear above the bird. When there was no mirror, the roosters acted as usual. They called out when they were near another rooster, but kept quiet when they were alone. Then, the mirror was put back. When a rooster was in a space where it could see itself in the mirror, it kept silent when it saw the eagle’s shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror. The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, not other roosters. Maybe some animals are cleverer than people thought. 41. What do the scientists put on the tested animal to do the mirror test? A. A mark. B. A mirror. C. Some food D. Another animal 42. According to Paragraph 3, what will a rooster do when it is alone seeing an eagle? A. Hide behind the mirror. B. Make loud noise. C. Go for other roosters. D. Keep quiet. 43. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following shows the correct order of the rooster test? A. b-a-e-c-d B. b-e-a-c-d C. a-b-d-e-c D. a-c-b-d-e 44. What can we learn about the roosters? A. They are in fact not as clever as we thought. B. They make loud noise to keep others from danger. C. They usually hide behind the mirror when eagles come. D. They can’t recognize themselves with marks on their bodies. 45. Which part of the magazine might the passage come from? A. Animal World. B. Quiz Time. C. Science Discovery. D. A 37. B 38. C 39. B 40. 【36题详解】 根据第四段中“People can finish a micro-drama in short periods of time”以及“Also, most micro-dramas are filmed vertically (竖向地). This allows people to watch them comfortably without having to turn their phone screen.” 【37题详解】 根据第三段中“The stories are usually fast-paced and have many surprising twists.”可知①正确;根据第四段中“People can finish a micro-drama in short periods of time, such as on their way to work.”可知②正确;根据“This allows people to watch them comfortably without having to turn their phone screen.” 【38题详解】 根据最后一段中“However, one challenge to be addressed is that many of them have similar themes.” 【39题详解】 根据最后一段中“The dramas should cover more topics, not just the usual ones like time travel”可知,李江建议微短剧涵盖更多样化的话题,而不仅仅局限于常见题材。 D The mirror test is a way to test if an animal can recognize (识别) itself. D. Book Review 【答案】41. A 42. D 43. A 44. B 45. 【41题详解】 根据第一段中“A mark is put on an animal, then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror.” 【42题详解】 根据第三段中“If they’re alone, they keep quiet so the eagle won’t see them.” 【43题详解】 根据第四段中“First, the scientists let the roosters spend time getting used to being in a space with a mirror around.”可知先是b;根据“Then, he took the mirror out”可知接着是a;根据“When there was no mirror, the roosters acted as usual. They called out when they were near another rooster”可知是e;根据“but kept quiet when they were alone”可知是c;最后“Then, the mirror was put back... it kept silent when it saw the eagle’s shadow.” 【44题详解】 根据第三段中“When there’s danger—like an eagle flying above—roosters make loud noise to warn nearby chickens.” 第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的五个选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺、连贯,意思完整(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) E Communication between people of different cultures is more important than ever. Recently, we had a discussion about whether students should be allowed to use Homework Help App. Some students believe that using Homework Help App is beneficial. It can help them solve problems in time when they meet difficulties in doing homework. Besides, it can save them a lot of time, so they can have more time to do other things.
