During a workshop at a local art school, Li met Pierre, a French violinist who was fascinated by her instrument’s attractive sound.“It’s like the voice of ancient China,” he remarked with excitement, gently plucking (拨) the erhu’s strings.Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration. As they practiced in a sunlit studio overlooking the Seine, Li taught Pierre how to imitate raindrops with quick bow movements on the erhu, while Pierre showed her how to weave Western harmonies into the Chinese folk tune “Jasmine Flower”. The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece“Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause. The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous melodies (旋律). What began as a summer experiment blossomed into lasting friendship and something far greater.Today, Li and Pierre co-teach virtual music classes, connecting students in Chengdu and Lyon through weekly“global jam sessions”. Their students cooperate on pieces that mix erhu with guitar or Peking opera with jazz.Li often tells her pupils, “Music has no borders; it’s a language that turns differences into harmonies.” When traditions meet with open hearts, they don’t conflict; they compose something entirely new. 4.Why did Li Mei bring her erhu to Paris? Why do “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, “War and Peace” and “A Tale of Two Cities” still sell truckloads of copies? Because certain books impact generation after generation for decades—or even centuries—after they are written. Scholars, critics and others call such books the Great Books. In addition to standing the test of time, these notable works are considered great because of their storytelling, ideas, and far-reaching cultural impact.Reading the Great Books is like taking the well-worn track through the forest. They show you the wisdom that has successfully guided generations upon generations. The wisdom that comes from reading Great Books will better equip you to helm life. However, many of us are hesitant to read old books because they are challenging. They are often written in different time periods, cultures or languages. But every time we take a step outside of our comfort zone, we are growing into better versions of ourselves.Great Books will sharpen your intellect. They require more thinking because of their complex ideas—such as those of Plato, Aquinas or Nietzsche.More often, they are difficult because they are simply different. They pull us out of the echo chamber (回音室) of our modern, digital-dominated world into something unlike our experience.Books from different time periods will have different assumptions and values. If you allow yourself to be stretched by reading from Great Books, then you’ll find your worldview clarified. You will become someone who can handle challenging ideas and not be scared by them. Reading Great Books will also grow your sympathy for others, as well as appreciation for the many factors that shape who we are as persons. The most obvious example is in classic literature that gives us a window into another person’s life. 8.What aspect of Great Books is talked about in the first two paragraphs? Hayhoe advises against trying to engage with a small minority, the “Dismissives”, who “angrily reject the idea that human-caused climate change is a threat; they are most receptive to misinformation and conspiracy theories (阴谋论)”.There is a warning that offering up more facts about climate change can actually increase polarisation among them. The book includes amusing examples of her encounters with the “Dismissives”, almost entirely older men—including an engineer who was unconvinced about the evidence but with whom she was able to establish mutual (相互的) respect through a shared passion for knitting (打毛线衣)—and is packed with inspiring accounts of how she has won over even the most suspicious of crowds. Her motto is “bond, connect and inspire”, which represents her approach of always looking for points of commonality. She also tells of a man who approached her after an event in London in 2019.He had been so inspired by her TED talk that he had started to speak to everybody he could in his neighborhood of Wandsworth. He showed her details of 12,000 conversations that had taken place as a result, claiming that they had helped to convince the council to declare a climate emergency and to switch investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy. And so, while it may feel difficult to influence the outcome of the COP26, Hayhoe’s uplifting book makes a persuasive case that we can all do our bit to bring about success just by talking about the issue. 12.What does the book mainly focus on? Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will appeal to many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk. If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine (疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful? How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill? Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful.First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work.So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem, a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive (直觉的) assumptions and very simple maths. Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas.Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand. 1.What does the underlined word “nonplussed” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? Turbulent flow occurs in fluids like ocean currents and storm clouds, where big swirls break into smaller ones.“These swirls aren’t random. They arrange themselves in specific patterns that can be predicted by physical laws,” explained Yongxiang Huang, lead author of the study. Huang and his colleagues examined 14 main whirling shapes in a digital version of the painting. The atmospheric motion in the painted sky cannot be directly measured, so they measured the size of brushstrokes and the brightness of varying paint colors. They discovered that the 14 big swirls match a physical law called Kolmogorov’s theory of turbulence. The smallest paint mixes also follow a pattern known as Batchelor’s scaling. Finding both laws in one painting is rare, and it is such an amazing coincidence (巧合).Van Gogh would not have been aware it was physics, but likely he spent a lot of time observing turbulence in nature.“It must be planted into his mind so that he could make this famous painting so convincing,” Huang said. The team performed a similar analysis and detected the same phenomenon in another painting, Chain Pier, Brighton by John Constable in 1826.While it doesn’t have clear swirls, its clouds show rich structures like those seen in the sky. Scientists have long struggled to fully understand turbulent flow, which is important for weather forecasting, flight turbulence and many other processes.Even after over 100 years of study, defining this complex natural phenomenon is still challenging.Huang also noted that artworks like The Starry Night matching turbulence models might mean the statistical methods and tools are less precise than thought. 5.What is the main focus of the new study? A.Van Gogh’s troubled mental state. B.The artist’s hidden talent for science. C.The display of swirls in the painting. D.The artistic value of the painting. 根据第一段“new study suggests Vincent van Gogh had a deep understanding of how turbulent flow(湍流) moves”和第三段对画中漩涡的分析可知,研究主要关注画中漩涡的呈现方式及其物理规律。故选C。 6.Which is a way researchers analysed the atmospheric motion in The Starry Night? A.Predicting the physical laws in the sky. B.Comparing the swirls with their digital versions. C.Measuring the movement of brushstrokes. D.Examining the variations of paint colors. 根据第三段“they measured the size of brushstrokes and the brightness of varying paint colors”可知,研究人员通过测量笔触大小和颜料颜色亮度来分析大气运动。故选D。 7.What probably made Van Gogh’s The Starry Night so vivid? A.Awareness of capturing beauty. B.Insightful observations of nature. C.Complicated painting techniques. D.Scientific understanding of turbulence. 根据第四段“Van Gogh would not have been aware it was physics, but likely he spent a lot of time observing turbulence in nature”可推知,梵高对自然的深入观察使他能生动描绘湍流景象。故选B。 8.Why did the researchers study Chain Pier, Brighton? A.To check their previous study result. B.To show they take the study seriously. C.To provide background information for the research. D.To confirm clear swirls are unique to Van Gogh’s works. 根据倒数第二段“performed a similar analysis and detected the same phenomenon in another painting”可知,研究另一幅画是为了验证之前发现的普遍性,检验研究结果。故选A。 Ⅱ.阅读七选五(每小题2.5分,共12.5分) (2025·福建省厦门市高三下一模) It’s believed that everything you need to know can be found in a book.People have always received life-guiding wisdom from certain types of non-fiction, often from “self-help” books. 1 A random sentence in a thriller (惊悚小说) will give you unexpected insight. There is a proud tradition of extracting (摘录) lines from poetry and songs and using them in this way. Some people argue that lines from novels and plays are dependent on what surrounds them. 2 I don’t buy this.It ignores the way that your brain collects, sorts and combines information. We can find meaning in everything. Today, we often over-schedule our days and complain constantly about being too busy.Books are uniquely suited to helping us change our relationship to the rhythms and habits of daily life. 3 They demand that we briefly put aside our work at hand and listen to someone else. You can rant against (咆哮) a book, or even throw it out the window.Still, you won’t change the words on the page. We all ask each other a lot of questions: “How did you sleep?” “Where did you go on your holidays?” But there’s one question we should ask of one another a lot more often, and that is: “What are you reading?” It isn’t a simple question when asked with genuine curiosity. 4 You can also learn about the person who wrote the book by assessing their writing techniques, such as ideas, word choice, style, tone, and content. 5 Similarly, examining the characters in books can give us a better grasp of human emotions and actions.Understanding others helps us to empathize with them, which creates a more compassionate society.
