It’s been almost a year now since my last post on Instagram or Facebook, and almost as long since I even opened them to check posts.I got off the two sites for a simple reason: I was spending too much time on them, and gaining next to nothing in the process.
I am not claiming that social media has no uses whatsoever. It has brought the world closer together and helps people keep in touch. It just ceased to work for me.I was increasingly beginning to feel like the people on my social media were less of friends and more of acquaintances(认识的人).In fact, I cannot remember the last time I actually had a conversation with most of them. And knowing about each other’s lives simply through each other’s status updates (状态更新) didn’t feel much like a meaningful way of keeping in touch.
Additionally, it’s not fair for me to complain that people get on to social media to make their lives look good because that is the nature of the medium. We post only the good parts and not the bad. What I think is really unfortunate, though, is how easy it seems to be for us to forget this fact when we look at other people’s posts online.
The removal of social media from the equation makes things much simpler and more meaningful.I have read more books in 2021 than during any other year in my life so far, and it is at least partly because I don’t spend time scrolling through(浏览) social media.I now have a few close friends to talk face-to-face rather than communicate by Instagram or Facebook.I take pictures and videos of happy moments to store all these memories for myself and my family rather than for my imagined audience online. It may be terribly hard to get off social media for an extended period of time, but it can be worth it.

Watching others enjoy food can be surprisingly entertaining, as seen in the popularity of cooking shows that fill prime-time TV spots. These shows not only inspire us to try new dishes but also make it enjoyable to watch someone taste delicious food. The viral trend of “mukbang” takes this pleasure to a new level. In mukbang videos, people record themselves eating large amounts of food, often focusing on the experience of consuming an unusually large quantity. The term “mukbang” comes from the Korean words “meongneun” (eating) and “bangsong” (broadcast).Originating in South Korea, the trend gained popularity as a way to fight widespread feelings of anxiety and loneliness, according to a recent paper.
Today, mukbangs have gone global, with various formats catering to (迎合) different preferences. Some videos focus more on storytelling or eating against the clock, while others emphasize consuming a large amount of food. Some are pre-recorded, while others are live-streamed, allowing the creator to interact with viewers in real-time.
However, mukbangs also come with potential downsides. They often feature fast food or takeaways, and the large quantities of food consumed can encourage an unhealthy relationship with food.“Many of these videos are incredibly unhealthy,” says Patterson, an integrative transpersonal psychotherapist. The pressure to eat more to attract viewers can also affect the creators themselves. The larger the quantity of food consumed, the more views a video tends to get. This can lead to creators pushing themselves
to eat more, even to the point of extreme discomfort, in order to keep
viewers engaged.
Despite these concerns, it is still possible to enjoy mukbangs in a healthy and reasonable way.Watching videos with a strong social element or those featuring new cuisines can provide entertainment and inspiration.Sharing a love of food is one of life’s joys, but it’s important to maintain a healthy relationship with it.If the idea of mukbangs turns sour in your mouth, it might be because they can encourage an unhealthy relationship with food. However, by opting to watch responsibly-made mukbangs, you can still enjoy the benefits of social connection and cooking inspiration without compromising (妥协) your health.

The wide difference in health outcomes across the world are neither new nor unknown. From differences in life expectancy to uneven access to quality healthcare, the so-called “Health Gap” is a persistent, troubling display of inequality.People living in low-and middle-income countries are far more likely to die prematurely from preventable and treatable causes than those in wealthier nations.Severe differences in health outcomes also persist within countries, cutting along socioeconomic, racial, and geographic lines.
Closing these health gaps is both a moral and practical imperative because every human being has a right to a healthy, dignified life; practical because health inequalities impose substantial economic and social costs.Health inequalities could cost the U.S.economy approximately $320 billion annually and rise to $1 trillion by 2040 if not addressed. These figures underscore the need for systemic solutions that look at the root causes.
Artificial intelligence has entered the scene as a new tool in the endeavor to remake the health system.Broadly speaking, pattern recognition and personalized care are the two buckets of interest in that context.AI applications can detect diseases—often earlier and more accurately than humans-tailor treatments to individual patients, and support healthcare professionals in managing complex cases.
Beyond clinical settings, AI-driven analyses of large datasets—from hospital records to socioeconomic indicators—can highlight at-risk communities, helping policymakers and health organizations allocate resources more effectively.By identifying underserved areas and populations least likely to access preventive services, AI can guide targeted community interventions, mobile clinics, health education programs, and other initiatives to close the health gap.
While the potential is immense, AI’s effectiveness in closing the health gap depends on more than just technological advancement.AI must be deliberately tailored, trained, tested, and targeted to bring out the best in and for people and the planet. This means anchoring AI development and deployment (部署) in a whole understanding of humans, and the environment they evolve in.It also involves the design of ethical frameworks, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and 360-degree strategies that systematically bring out the complementarity of AI and NI (National Insurance), including the knowledge, experience, and intuition of humans.

Imagine a child asking a chatbot or voice assistant if Santa Claus is real. How should the AI respond, given that some families would prefer a lie over the truth? This is a dilemma in the little-studied area of robots deception (欺骗).
Two Georgia Tech researchers, Kantwon Rogers and Reiden Webber, designed a driving simulation (模拟) experiment to investigate how intentional robot deception affects trust between humans and AI, and whether different types of apologies can help repair that trust.
In the simulation, participants were instructed to drive a“robot-assisted car” to the hospital to save a friend’s life, while the AI assistant falsely warned of police ahead, advising participants to stay under the speed limit.Upon reaching the hospital, participants were informed that there were no police, and they received one of five different text-based responses from the robot—three admitting the lie, two offering a simple apology without admission. The study aimed to determine which type of apology was most effective in repairing trust after a robot’s lie.
The results of the experiment were surprising.45% of the participants did not speed, because they believed the robot knew more about the situation than they did, revealing an overly trusting attitude toward AI.The results also indicated that while none of the apology types fully recovered trust, the apology with no admission of lying was statistically more effective in repairing trust than other responses.
The researchers’ final goal is to create a robot system that can learn when and how to lie or apologize during human-AI interactions. But they acknowledge that this is a complex issue.“We still know very little about AI deception, but we do know that lying is not always bad, and telling the truth isn’t always good,” Rogers said.“So how can we make laws that support new ideas without harming them, while also keeping people safe?”

When Sherlock Holmes asked Dr.Watson to consider the previous night’s “curious incident” involving a dog, Watson replied that nothing had happened.“That was the curious incident,” observed Holmes. This clue enabled Holmes to conclude that the murderer must have been someone familiar to the victim’s dog because the dog did not bark when the murderer appeared. Most people would miss this important clue because, like Watson, they pay little attention to non-occurrences.
In everyday life, consumers often make decisions based on brief descriptions of products in advertisements and other one-sided promotional materials. Why are people willing to make decisions based on limited information? People are accustomed to using whatever evidence is readily available to them—however insufficient—at the expense of other information that persuaders fail to mention.Omission neglect (insensitivity to unmentioned options, features, issues, or possibilities) is particularly problematic given the nature of the world.Information describing alternatives—such as job applicants, consumer products, medical procedures, and decision outcomes—varies dramatically across situations. Some alternatives are discussed at considerable length, while others are described only briefly. To some extent, nearly everything is described in terms of limited or incomplete evidence.
Research on omission neglect has shown that people often fail to detect the absence of important missing information, and this leads people to form strong beliefs on the basis of weak evidence.Strong beliefs are beliefs that are overly extreme and held with a high degree of confidence. In general, people should form more extreme beliefs when more rather than less information is available. However, when people are insensitive to omissions, people form extreme beliefs regardless of how little is known about a topic, according to Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion.
The results of research published by Sanbonmatsu suggest that omission neglect occurs because missing information is not very noticeable. To the extent that this is true, omission neglect should be reduced when the importance of missing information is enhanced.More moderate judgments are made when people are sensitive to omissions due to a clear warning that the given information is incomplete, due to very high levels of prior knowledge about the target object or issue, or due to comparison processes that make it painfully obvious that some objects are described by a large amount of information whereas others are described by a small amount.

C.The absence of the dog’s barking.
D.The time of the murderer’s appearance.
√
细节理解题。根据第一段“the dog did not bark when the murderer appeared”可知,福尔摩斯是通过“狗没有吠叫”这一未发生的事件得出凶手是熟人的结论。故选C。
6.What do people tend to do when making decisions?
A.Analyse the persuaders.
B.Gather more information.
C.Assess the influence of the decisions.
D.Fail to notice what is unmentioned.
√
细节理解题。根据第二段“People are accustomed to using whatever evidence is readily available to them...at the expense of other information that persuaders fail to mention.”可知,人们习惯于依赖现成信息,而忽略未被提及的内容。故选D。
7.What is Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion?
A.More information builds confidence.
B.Weak evidence can lead to strong beliefs.
C.Most people like to challenge themselves.
D.It is hard to know everything about a topic.
√
细节理解题。根据第三段“this leads people to form strong beliefs on the basis of weak evidence”以及“people form extreme beliefs regardless of how little is known”可知,Sanbonmatsu的结论是:即使证据薄弱,人们也可能形成强烈的信念。故选B。
8.What does the last paragraph intend to do?
A.Debate about the truth of information.
B.Warn people against incomplete information.
C.Increase the awareness of missing information.
D.Improve people’s ability to compare information.
√
推理判断题。根据最后一段“omission neglect should be reduced when the importance of missing information is enhanced”以及“More moderate judgments are made when people are sensitive to omissions...”可推知,本段旨在提出方法,以提高人们对缺失信息的意识。故选C。

Achieving Success in Journalistic News Writing
No book, article or blog post can turn an ambitious writer into a successful journalist. All that it can do is to help the writer learn to write. The primary skill in learning to write is practice. 1
Among the most convenient subjects are the events and news in the world around us.Such topics are what skilled journalists write about, and that is why we call this form of writing “journalistic writing”.
Journalistic writing is not a special literary gymnastics that requires a special talent and an expansive vocabulary. 2 It is using language to tell what is going on in the world. As such, it requires no special talent beyond seeing and understanding what is taking place around us, to grasp its significance and relation to other events, and to tell others what we have seen and heard.
3 One of the chief characteristics is timeliness and relevance. It has little time to talk about the past, except in comparison with the present. It has little time to foretell the future, except in pointing out the significance of the present. Its subject is today. It is primarily concerned with facts. The writer considers himself a recorder of the things other persons are doing and thinking.
Another basic part of journalistic writing is that the writer prepares it for a definite purpose. Some writers, like novelists, write to use beautiful words and sentences. 4 However, the writer who favors a journalistic style uses English simply to tell what he has seen and heard; he realizes that his reader cares more for the things he tells than for the way in which he tells and expresses them.
Success in journalistic writing demands two important skills. One is the inborn skill to see and understand. The other is the skill to tell what the writer has seen in a way that makes the reader see the same thing. 5 If the writer is eager to excel, he must expand his knowledge and education so he can better understand and evaluate the things he sees and hears.
A.It will not do them any good to write news items.
B.To these imaginative literary writers, they favor expression.
C.To practice writing, one must have something to write about.
D.An ambitious writer can develop both skills if he lacks them.
E.The writer must write it now or never―without giving up quality.
F.Journalistic writing differs mainly in its subject matter and purpose.
G.Instead, it is the plainest, most reserved form of English composition.
