Payton McGriff Payton McGriff, during her senior year at the University of Idaho, founded Style Her Empowered (SHE) after realizing the scoring cost of school uniforms for many girls in Togo.SHE began by hiring local seamstresses to make uniforms for 65 girls and evolved to create a “growing” uniform that adjusts to fit a girl for up to three years.Today, SHE supports 1,500 girls annually with free uniforms, school fees, supplies, tutoring, and more, while also providing employment and education opportunities for the women involved. Rachel Rutter Immigration lawyer Rachel Rutter recognized the multifaceted needs of unaccompanied migrant children, beyond legal status, including stable housing, meals, and mental health support. In response, she established Project Libertad, which offers free legal representation, essential services, and newcomer support programs to immigrant youth. At the tender age of 14, Oprah Winfrey was subjected to the heinous act of abuse perpetrated by a family acquaintance, her cousin, and her uncle. It is also whispered that she donned attire fashioned from potato sacks, for her family lacked the financial means to procure for her more fashionable garments.Furthermore, she was the target of relentless bullying by her schoolmates. After being consigned to a residence for troubled adolescents, her father relocated her to Nashville, Tennessee, a move that proved to be the catalyst for the transformation of her life. How did Oprah Winfrey surmount the formidable odds and construct her illustrious career from the most rudimentary beginnings? The genesis of her journey can be traced back to the age of 19 when she emerged victorious in the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. This triumph marked the inaugural stride on her path towards a career in the media industry. She commenced her professional endeavors as a radio and television host in Nashville.Subsequently, she ventured to Baltimore, Maryland, where she presided over a local talk show entitled “People Are Talking”. The show garnered a significant following, which in turn paved the way for her own nationally syndicated talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, a program that spanned an impressive 25 seasons and secured its place in history as the highest-rated talk show of all time. Oprah Winfrey possesses a heart replete with benevolence and has been an unwavering supporter of a myriad of causes throughout the trajectory of her career, including but not limited to education, health, and wellness. She also stands as a staunch advocate for the rights of women.Utilizing her influential platform, she has inspired millions and galvanized countless others.Through her charitable endeavors, known collectively as the Oprah Winfrey Network, she continues to inspire, educate, and entertain individuals across the globe. Moreover, she took a momentous step towards the advancement of education for girls in South Africa by establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. (时间:45分钟 满分:62.5分) Ⅰ.阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共20分) A (2025·广东省高三下一模) At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”.Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地).However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up. Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread.Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable. In an effort to challenge this misconception, researchers designed an experiment.Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily distinguishable colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to differentiate. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning. The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged.Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle.Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade over time. This pushes us to reconsider the underlying culture that might lead to this phenomenon.Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement.By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work.Such a shift would not only reduce the pressures associated with the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a profound impact on personal development and the future of education. 【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了“斯坦福鸭子综合征”现象及其影响,并强调努力的重要性。 1.What phenomenon does the “Stanford Duck Syndrome” probably describe? Researchers at Zurich’s Federal Institute of Technology recently published their work in the journal Nature Food. The new chocolate does not need any added sugar due to the natural sweetness in the cocoa fruit. In fact, the juice contains 14 percent sugar which is distilled (蒸馏) down to a concentrated syrup (糖浆) and then combined with the fruit pulp to form a gel (凝胶).When the gel is added to cocoa beans to make chocolate, it is naturally sweet. The mixtures were tested by trained specialists using small pieces of chocolate that weighed just five grams each to find out which one worked the best. But besides getting rid of added refined sugar (精制糖) to the chocolate, using the fruit also boasted the fiber content. The traditional system of cocoa production in Africa and South America is not sustainable. The industry is also suffering from the soaring price of cocoa beans and the poverty of the cocoa farmers.Using the entire fruit could help ease these two issues.“Not only do the farmers get significantly extra income through using cocoa pulp, but also the important industrial processing is happening in the country of origin.Creating jobs, creating value that can be distributed in the country of origin,” Anian Schreiber said. Chocolate producers in Africa, South America, and even in the US, are already contacting Mishra, the main researcher of the study, about the new method. In Switzerland, chocolate producers including Lindt are starting to use the entire cocoa plant and not just the beans, but none have completely removed refined sugar. 【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了瑞士科学家研发出一种新的巧克力制作方法,这种方法不仅使巧克力更健康,还对地球更友好。 5.Which word best describes the traditional cocoa production system? Before I landed in Canada, I had known I would face a lot of problems. 2 It happened especially when it came to figuring out how to fix it or make the necessary adjustments here.I wasn’t able to communicate with people so easily because the accent here in Canada wasn’t familiar to me. 3 That directly contributed to my hesitation in talking with people around me.Besides, the fear of making mistakes was killing my desire to give it another try. To break through these difficulties, I realized that I had to actively engage with the local environment and the diverse community around me.When I first came to TRU, I met with national and international students, talked to them about our culture, like how our interactions happened, the way we communicated, and the traditions we were keeping.I started to observe people, including how they talked, their expressions, intonation, stress, vocabulary, and the way they used phrases in conversations.I also started to talk with my friends in English. 4 I persisted increasingly to gradually adapt to and feel at ease with the new language, culture, tradition and all the aspects that required my adjustments. 5 Nothing is impossible to achieve. All you need to do to achieve a goal is hard work, practice and not feeling shy when you’re making a mistake.I am learning a lot by making lots of mistakes. Now mistakes don’t bother me anyway.
