While touring Mississippi in an old car, John Ingall and his wife, Jane, discovered a plant that would change their lives—the hardshell gourd (葫芦).
At first, it was mere curiosity, but soon, they saw gourds everywhere—carved, hanging, glowing as lanterns.Drawn to them, John, a lifelong farmer, decided to try growing them.
Back in Warwickshire, he planted a few seeds among his tomatoes. The plants grew quickly, reaching six feet tall.Weeks later, he found large gourds hidden among the leaves.Since then, he has harvested about a hundred gourds each year, each with a different shape—some long and thin, others round.Unexpectedly, Ingall had been trying to retire when he first discovered gourds. After managing two farms—one from Jane’s family and another for growing crops—he had always planned to stop working at 65.Unlike many farmers who never retire, he wanted to find a new interest.
Farming had been his childhood dream, despite his parents’ objections. They, shaped by the Great Depression, had hoped he would take an office job.Yet, his love for rural life never faded.Over 45 years, he moved from dairy to beef, then organic farming, and finally letting the land return to nature.Change, he welcomed—but only in a controlled manner.
Yet gourds pushed him beyond his comfort zone.“Not until I started working on them did I realize—I am an artist!” said John. Now, as one of the few gourd artists in the U.K., he creates lanterns with colored glass, astonishing visitors.
As well as selling gourds through his personal studio, John markets them at art fairs, donating profits to fight the climate crisis.“It’s very satisfying.Gourds are an entirely sustainable material for many types of art, and every gourd is unique,” he says.“I enjoy growing them. It’s amazing what you can do with gourds.”

A technology with roots going back to the Bronze Age may offer a fast and inexpensive approach to helping achieve the United Nations climate goal of net zero emissions by 2050, according to recent Stanford-led research.
The technology involves fitting heat-absorbing bricks in an insulated (隔热的) container, where they can store heat generated by solar or wind power for later use in industrial processes. The heat can then be released when needed by passing air through channels in the piles of “firebricks”, thus allowing cement, steel, glass, and paper factories to run on renewable energy even when wind and sunshine are unavailable. These systems are a form of thermal energy (热能) storage. The bricks are made from the same materials as the bricks that lined primitive kilns (窑) thousands of years ago.
Batteries can store electricity and provide it to generate heat on demand.“The differences between firebrick storage and battery storage are that the firebricks store heat rather than electricity and that their cost is one-tenth the cost of batteries,” said lead study author Mark Z.Jacobson, a professor at Stanford University.“The materials are basically just the components of dirt.”
The researchers adopted computer models to compare costs, land needs, health impacts, and emissions involved in two scenarios for an imagined future where 149 countries in 2050 are using renewable sources for all energy purposes. In one scenario, firebricks provide 90% of industrial process heat.In the other, there’s zero adoption of firebricks or other forms of thermal energy storage. The researchers found the scenario with firebricks could cut costs by $1.27 trillion across the 149 countries, while reducing the demand for electrical energy and energy storage capacity from batteries.
Jacobson’s focus on firebricks is relatively new, inspired by a desire to identify effective solutions that could be adopted quickly.“Here I can see a substantial benefits at low cost from multiple angles, from helping reduce air pollution deaths to making it easier to turn the world to clean energy,” he said.

When it is the time of the year, London’s plant stores appear to be filled up with a lot of James Wong’s favorite old-school Victorian houseplants, which are now thought to be incredibly difficult to grow, thanks to the widespread adoption of central heating.
As so many of these cool-climate species look remarkably exotic, people tend to assume that plants decline soon after they bring them home due to their own failure to treat them with the steamy jungle conditions they are convinced plants must require.
Wong believes that knowing that reality is normally the polar opposite is comforting. With the current energy crisis causing a lot of people to consider reducing the number of rooms they heat as well as the temperature in every home generally being actually reduced to a decidedly colder level, a few species could begin to come into their own, as per The Guardian.
Plants rely on light to produce food, start the growing cycle, and ensure healthy development.Photosynthesis(光合作用) would just not occur with the deprivation of the absorption energy from sunlight, and there would be insufficient oxygen to support life.
Wong holds that while these light-loving species will handle a wide range of temperatures, the combination of warm temperatures driving up their metabolic rate (新陈代谢率) coupled with the lack of light(meaning they don’t have the solar energy to support this desire for growth) is kind of like making an emergency stop and speeding up at the same time on their biology.Any driver wouldn’t go through such a conflict in their driving experience.
That’s why light-emitting diode (LED) lights, which can send out different wavelengths of light like the form of red and blue light used by plants for flowering, are frequently adopted to promote plant growth. They are not only effective at stimulating plant growth, but are also very energy-efficient.Basically, unlike most light bulbs, LEDs require very little power to generate light.

If you’ve been feeling a little pale and dried out, imagine how your houseplants feel in winter. While the sun streams in through windows all summer long, during winter it’s all shadows and drafts. 1 .Here are four ways you can make them happier.
Adjust the light. It’s not only that the sunlight is lower in the sky—it’s also available for fewer hours in the day.To guarantee your plants are getting enough vitamin D, you can try moving them closer to southern-facing windows. 2 .Plant lights can ensure that your plant gets enough light where it needs it.
Slow down the watering.I know that watering feels like the way in which we give plants love, but it is also the way in which we drown them.Too much water results in root rot.Ideally you want to water only so much that the soil is damp, but not wet, when you stick your finger in a few inches down. 3 .
Dust your leaves. If you love your plants, you’ll tend to their leaves by dusting them.Plants absorb nutrients from the air through their leaves. 4 .In this case, spray them with water and wipe them with a cloth. If you’re seeing leaf issues, such as all the leaves dropping, that can be a sign of over or under watering.
5 .Your plants enjoy the same conditions you do.They don’t enjoy hot or cold air, as either will dry them out. Each houseplant has specific needs, whether full sun, partial sun, partial shade or full shade, and you should keep needs in mind when providing sun exposure through the day.
A.Avoid unfavorable factors
B.Create a welcoming environment
C.And their “tiny holes” can get blocked by dust
D.It should have time to dry out in between watering
E.As a result, your plants may be looking a little dull
F.But ultimately you may need some man-made assistance
G.You should be careful about watering the root, as it requires more water

A few weeks ago I bought two orchids (兰花) for my windowsill. After giving them the dose of water they clearly missed in the shop, I started reflecting on how closely plant care and philosophy are connected. The two, I realized, share more than meets the eye.
You care for plants, and enjoy the life that develops thanks to your care, but the process is never finished. It continues until the plant completes its life cycle and then starts all over again.Philosophy works in the same way: new ideas, insights and perspectives are constantly emerging from the care taken with existing ideas. So just as plants grow and bloom, philosophical thinking is an ongoing process of becoming which never really reaches an end point. But it is precisely this constant thinking that keeps us on our toes, stimulates our creativity, and challenges us to leave the beaten track.
Philosophical thinking, like caring for plants, also requires patience. While we think, little seems to be happening. The thinker seems to lose himself in reasoning, an idea, a concept...In this he resembles the gardener who also plays a largely passive role between sowing and harvesting. In other words, the gardener has to follow the rhythms of nature. He can do little but wait, observe—and perhaps attend to his own thoughts. This waiting, this slowness, this patience we must exercise, are part of philosophy, just as they’re part of gardening.
Furthermore, both gardening and philosophy are far from useful in the traditional understanding of the word .Philosophical thinking rarely produces immediate, concrete results. The same goes for taking care of plants: there’s little economic benefits in watering house plants. But isn’t true happiness to be found precisely in the seemingly useless? When I see the spray of water from my watering can, my mind escapes the world of immediate rewards for a moment.
So even watering plants raises more questions than you might think. But isn’t questioning precisely the essence of both philosophy, and of life itself?

A garden constructed with “humble” clay fashioned into 3D-printed bricks has claimed the first green medal at the Chelsea Flower Show for being the most environmentally sustainable design.
The Chelsea Flower Show, a celebrated global event held annually at Chelsea, London, has been a cornerstone of the gardening calendar since 1913.It began as a way to showcase the latest trends in gardening and plant varieties. The Environmental Innovation Award is the first of its sort and goes along with the gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to the most attractive and interesting gardens.
Giulio Giorgi, a first-time Chelsea designer, stated he created the green-medal-winning garden with no concrete. Most gardens contain concrete in some form and the materials they are built from often generate the highest carbon footprint.
While the employment of pollinator-friendly plants, wild areas and sensible use of water are well-known easy ways to make a garden more sustainable, Giorgi said it was crucial to focus on the building materials as their carbon footprint was often overlooked.
“We typically use a lot of metal, glue, cement and then all the energy we have to put in to build the gardens. The material in our garden is low-temperature-fired clay, a resource that can be found pretty much everywhere. We made this clay into 3D-printed bricks, connecting ancient tradition with novel practices so carbon emissions are the lowest possible, if any.The bricks, peppered with tiny holes, can absorb water and release it when drought strikes plants,” said Giorgi.
Judges considered end-of-life plans for the gardens and whether materials could be reused. The 3D-printed nature of Giorgi’s garden means it can easily be taken apart and put together again. As a result, when it is relocated to RHS Garden Wisley, where it will live on after the show as an educational facility, the carbon emissions will be low as no materials will be wasted.

Vacations are an essential part of every person’s life.Following long seasons of hard work, it is well deserved to get away from busy schedules and enjoy nature.
While tourism is good, it has its dark side.Besides emission-based pollution, tourism also contributes heavily to plastic pollution. This kind of pollution can be reduced by advocating for sustainable vacationing. 1 When it comes to ecotourism, your inspiration for others to take action is equally important.
2 If a park says no to feeding wildlife, simply avoid feeding them. Most times, what we interpret as affection for wildlife puts them at risk.If parks allowed every person to feed animals, chances of the animals dying from food poisoning are high.
In our efforts to protect nature, we may fail to appreciate other people’s cultures. The local communities in the Amazon are a part of the forest’s life. When you visit such local communities, you may find them participating in some practices that may seem unfriendly to the ecosystem or wildlife. 3 Trying to listen and interact with communities opens more doors to bring in change than criticism does.
Most people are not sustainability conscious. 4 We have many ways to be sustainable and one is sharing your ideas. The sustainable option you choose may seem absurd to another person. However, sharing your experience may help others have different perspectives.
At the end of the day, sustainable vacationing should help you not only reduce negative environmental impact but also awaken society to such a reality. 5 However, every small step contributes to a more sustainable world.
A.No rule fits all situations concerning this topic.
B.The reason for this is that they think it cannot be achieved.
C.Protect our lives from potential danger by following regulations.
D.The best way to care for nature and wildlife is to follow the rules.
E.Instead of being critical, take your time to learn from their practices.
