Recently, over a period of three days, I felt at sea—unsettled and moody. It took a moment before I realized that for three days I had not made time to write in my journals. This realization provided a rational explanation for my unease.
Then I picked up my pen again, returned to the blank page, and started this writing practice that had been a habit for me.I remembered a famous dancer once spoke of her approach to her creative practice. When it came to creating dances, she got a box where she placed songs, records and ideas on slips of paper. It was through this process of exploration that she found her starting point and discovered where to begin.
When I was a long-distance runner, what motivated me to get me out of bed and out of the front door was the practice known as “ mise en place ”.The night before a run, I would diligently lay my running gear out at the foot of my bed.Sneakers would be positioned right by the front door.It made getting ready simple and easy, once I had all the items I needed close to hand.I could use the same approach for journal writing.I realized that I could apply a similar strategy to my journal writing, inspiring myself to establish a structured writing plan in advance.
Do you have your notebook and pen on hand? If you write outside of bed, do you have a comfortable chair, a suitable desk or a warm blanket close to hand? Writing journals with the right tools can help spark your own aliveness. When you make a choice to write, you are choosing to create rather than consume. The Finnish writer and painter Tove Jansson reminds us, “It is simply this: do not tire, never lose interest, never grow indifferent—lose your invaluable curiosity and you let yourself die. It’s as simple as that.”

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss.Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say “Certainly, go playing golf.” Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement.In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences.I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me.Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you.And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop ought to change you.I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how.How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem.To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places.I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question.I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.

In today’s interconnected world, maintaining personal independence is more important than ever. While cooperating with and relying on others are essential aspects of modern life, an overdependence on external (外部的) systems, technology, or individuals can gradually destroy autonomy, kill personal growth, and compromise one’s ability to deal with challenges.
First, independence develops self-reliance and adaptability. In a rapidly changing world, individuals must adapt to unexpected circumstances, from economic downturns (衰退)to technological disruptions. For example, someone who has developed financial knowledge and self-sufficiency is better equipped to handle economic challenges than someone who relies entirely on others for support.Independence enables individuals to take control of their lives and make informed decisions without being overly influenced by external forces.
Second, independence promotes personal growth and self-fulfillment.Relying too much on others can limit one’s opportunities to explore, take risks, and learn from mistakes. When individuals independently pursue their goals and passions, they gain confidence, skills, and a sense of purpose. For example, starting a personal project or business without external backing challenges people to innovate and think critically, developing creativity and problem-solving abilities.
Maintaining independence protects individuality and personal identity in a world where conformity (遵从) is often encouraged.Social media and cultural trends can pressure individuals to agree with popular opinions or adopt popular lifestyles, potentially hiding their true selves.Independence allows people to form their own beliefs, values, and priorities, making them more empowered to contribute uniquely to society.
Critics might argue that independence risks isolation or the loss of community values. However, independence does not prevent cooperation or meaningful relationships. In fact, truly independent individuals often bring more value to relationships because they contribute from a place of strength and confidence rather than dependency.
Maintaining independence in today’s society is vital for personal growth. While mutual support and interdependence are valuable, they should not come at the cost of autonomy.Keeping a balance between cooperation and independence ensures individuals can thrive in an ever-evolving world.

The Power of Thinking Differently
Just in the past few weeks, my wife has become the supporter of the concept of zero-waste living.Zero-waste is obviously about changing behaviors to produce less waste. But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue (积累) things we don’t really need, I realized that zero-waste starts with something else. 1 And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.
This came to mind as I read a cover story in education.Ostensibly (表面上), it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude (天赋). 2
That is always going to be hard. But in recent decades, colleges have realized that the old ways of judging individual value, while not necessarily wrong, were narrow. While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success. 3 The tests weren’t good enough.Schools could do better.
So what has happened? Schools are increasingly consenting to think differently about admissions. They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual. 4 Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake. However, once the first step is taken, the onward pull of reason and morality speed progress.
At a time when there appears to be so much confusion in the world, it is possible to look out and instead see something else: the world struggling with the perpetual (长久的) task of consenting to new ideas.Politics today show how easily we can become stuck in the mentally familiar.
5 That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers.Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.
The only constant is the universal need for progress, and that will never leave us where it found us.
A.It starts with consenting (同意) to change thought.
B.Undoubtedly there have been missteps along the way.
C.In short, they left a lot of amazing people out and didn’t even know it.
D.But at its heart, it reveals something more fundamental: how we judge individual value.
E.They offer the most challenging academic programs and ensure every student’s physical and mental health.
F.The world, on the other hand, is constantly demanding that we should be kinder and more connected and think ever larger.
G.Many universities known to be highly selective in their admissions policies received more applicants than usual.
1.答案:A
解析:上文“But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue(积累) things we don’t really need, I realized that zero-waste starts with something else.” 下文“And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.” 故选A。
2.答案:D
解析:上文“Ostensibly(表面上), it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude.”
3.答案:C
解析:上文“While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success.”
4.答案:G
解析:上文“They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual.”
5.答案:F
解析:下文“That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers.Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.”

About a decade ago, Fuchsia Dunlop attended a banquet (宴会) in Guangzhou. The most memorable dish, however, was the plain white cup of soup served at the end.Made from chicken, it was simple, clean and perfect. It seems odd to Westerners, but, as Ms Dunlop, an English food writer, explains in a new book, stock (家禽) is a unique expression of a chef’s art.And the clean, “almost invisible soup” is an ideal conclusion to a banquet, with its rich and strong flavours.
Invitation to a Banquet is Ms Dunlop’s seventh book where, unlike a traditional cookbook, she has chosen 30 dishes to illustrate different aspects of Chinese cuisine—and, in turn, Chinese life and history.Like other outsiders who focus on a foreign cuisine, she is more a gatherer than an inventor of recipes. Her well-researched cookbooks read as mini-ethnographies (民族志).
Readers will not learn how to make traditional Chinese cuisines but how and why Chinese chefs have long prized unusual (and to Westerners, sometimes unappealing) ingredients.A seemingly humble yet labor-intensive dish of braised carp (鲤鱼) tail serves as a starting point for exploring the significance of kougan, or mouthfeel, in Chinese cuisine.Westerners, Ms Dunlop argues, “have traditionally assumed that the Chinese eat less desirable animal parts out of poverty”, when in fact they shut the door on various foods that is wonderfully cui (“slippery, often in a wet way”).
Altogether, Ms Dunlop makes a persuasive argument for the superiority of Chinese cuisine, highlighting its strengths in a joyful manner rather than a boastful one.She shows how it has embraced foreign influences, how it has changed with China’s increasing wealth and how central it is to the country’s cultural history.
She makes an equally persuasive argument that what Westerners think of as “Chinese food”, commonly found at their local takeaway, is neither inauthentic nor wrong.Instead, it is an adaptation shaped by Chinese communities living abroad and as representative of the cuisine’s diversity as a frozen pizza is of Italy’s.Immigration has made the authentic flavors more accessible than ever outside China.Eaters should learn to appreciate that.

In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated.Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett—“Try again.Fail again.Fail better.” It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory.
Nevertheless, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”.We find ways to devalue (贬低) the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjåstad.
Sjåstad explains that the “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism (机制).“Most of us picture ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback (反馈) suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says.“The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self.We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript.“We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjåstad says.
It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time.It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect” may lead us to come to this decision prematurely , rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable.By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing has happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.

B.It pictures us as competitive people.
C.It poses a severe threat to the self-image.
D.It denies negative feedback to ourselves.

6.What is the author’s attitude towards failure?
A.Short-sighted.
B.Wait-and-see.
C.Objective.
D.Skeptical.
根据倒数第二段中“It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time.It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer making us happy.”
7.What does the underlined word “prematurely” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Unhappily. B.Mistakenly. C.Hurriedly. D.Carelessly.
答案:C
