When Jane Goodall was young, reading and exploring nature were her ideas of fun. Her mother encouraged her to learn and ask questions. Goodall dreamed of seeing the habitats of her favorite animals on her own.
In 1957, Goodall visited a farm in Kenya, Africa. There, she met a famous paleoanthropologist (古人类学家), Louis Leakey. He was looking for someone to study chimpanzees, which could tell us about early human history. Once he got to know Goodall, he knew she was the perfect person for the job.
Goodall arrived in Tanzania, East Africa, in 1960, and journeyed to the Gombe Stream Game Reserve. She learned early on that studying chimpanzees wouldn’t be easy. To observe them up close, she had to take months to gain their trust. To her, the chimpanzees were complex creatures with lives surprisingly similar to humans’. She rejected the practice of identifying chimpanzees by numbers and gave each of them a human name. Goodall was observing chimpanzees she’d named David Greybeard and Goliath. She watched as they made tools out the roots of grass to pick termites (白蚁) out of a nest. Until then, people thought humans were the only species that used tools. Because of Goodall’s discovery, chimpanzees are now accepted as intelligent and social animals.
Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to provide conservation and environmental education. In the late 1980s, her focus changed to something much larger. Deforestation (滥伐森林) and climate change were affecting the world’s natural habitats. The plants that the chimpanzees depended on for food were in danger. The fight she began against habitat loss continues today, through animal preserves and research sites.
Throughout her life, Goodall’s work has protected the lives of people and animals around the world. And she encourages young people to join this struggle for a better world. Goodall says that the world will be a better place if people do some help.
24. Why did Louis Leakey pick Jane Goodall to study chimpanzees?
A. Jane Goodall’s mother inspired him to do that. B. Louis Leakey wanted to know animals’ history.
C. Jane Goodall had fun in exploring the unknown. D. Jane Goodall was just the right one for the work.
25. What significant discovery did Jane Goodall make?
A. Chimpanzees could use simple tools.
B. Chimpanzees could follow humans’ commands.
C. Chimpanzees had the ability to swim and fish for food.
D. Chimpanzees lived in large societies similar to humans.
26. What made Jane Goodall change her focus according to paragraph 4?
A. The reasons for chimpanzees’ using tools. B. The Jane Goodall Institute’s establishment.
C. Fewer habitats and unfriendly climate change. D. The change of her main interest.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Jane Goodall’s early career. B. Jane Goodall’s research techniques.
C. Jane Goodall’s focus on chimpanzees’ using tools. D. Jane Goodall’s discoveries and conservation work.

Fire kills nearly 3, 700 Americans yearly and destroys $23 billion in property, often because traditional smoke detectors fail to warn residents timely — leaving little time to escape or call for help. Now, NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s NYU Fire Research Group has developed an AI system to boost fire safety, using existing security cameras to detect fires and smoke in real time.
Published in IEEE Internet of Things, the system analyzes video footage, identifying fires in 0.016 seconds per frame — faster than a human blink (眨眼) — to give vital extra minutes for evacuation and emergency response. Unlike conventional detectors, which need heavy smoke buildup and close proximity to activate, it spots early-stage fires via video alone, even before flames spread widely.
Concerning statistics highlight the urgent need: 11% of residential fire deaths happen where detectors failed — either due to malfunction or total absence. To make matters worse, modern building materials and open floor plans make fires spread 2-3 times faster than in older structures, with structural collapse times greatly reduced.
The team used an overall approach, combining multiple advanced AI algorithms (算法) to cut false alarms — a critical factor, as false alerts waste emergency resources. Multiple algorithms must agree to confirm a fire. Trained on a custom dataset covering the National Fire Protection Association’s five fire classes (from ordinary combustibles to electrical and cooking fires) , the best model hit 80. 6% accuracy. Temporal analysis, which tracks how fire regions change across video frames, removes false alarms with 92. 6% accuracy, “Real fires are dynamic — growing, shifting shape,” noted Professor Sunil Kumar.
Cloud-based, the system uses existing CCTV (闭路电视) ; cameras stream raw video to servers for AI analysis. On detection, it automatically generates video clips and sends real-time alerts via email and text — no costly hardware upgrades, a strength for widespread use.
It can integrate with drones (无人机) to spot remote wildfires early and firefighters’ tools to enhance safety. Beyond fire, the team says it may adapt to security threats or medical emergencies, expanding safety monitoring.
28. What can we know about the fire in America from the text?
A. It has caused massive damage. B. It seems less destructive currently.
C. It primarily affects old buildings at large. D. It takes lots of effort to put out it.
29. Which of the following best describes the system?
A. Time-consuming. B. Extremely costly.
C. Good-looking. D. Highly efficient.
30. What does the team intend to emphasize about the system in the last paragraph?
A. Its safety rules in use. B. Its potential application.
C. Its demand for software. D. Its possible weaknesses.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Threat of Fire B. AI Powers Fire Security
C. The Rise of Drones D. AI Gives Early Warning

Learning a new language can be a big challenge at any age; however, it seems to be especially difficult to master a foreign tongue as we age.
When we are growing up, we are building a language system in our mind, which allows us to communicate freely. If we start a new language after youth, however, we are adding a new set of rules to our mind. That is why we find it difficult to learn a new language — we’re building a new speech system when we are not young any more. Why is it easier for kids to learn a new language? Children are relatively more active, open-minded and their language system is not fixed, meaning it is less work for them to pick up new things.
The good news is that learning a language isn’t really that hard if you’re opening your mind. But it does take hard work and motivation to achieve your goals.
It’s important to remember what you’re actually learning is how to communicate in a new way with other human beings. If you often share your daily experience with others in that language, what you’re learning is related to you. For example, if I’m learning Italian, I would never remember how to say “Dove è la biblioteca?” or “Where is the library?” but I will always remember how to say “Ti piace il caffe?” or “Do you like some coffee?”
In addition, TV shows, films and video games in foreign languages are all great forms of entertainment for learning a new language. Anything that relates you to the language and culture is great, so long as you find it enjoyable.
Adding a single new word to your vocabulary can be interesting and rewarding. The road to fluency can be hard, but the view along the way is really amazing, so it’s OK if you are driving slowly.
32. What affects language learning according to the first two paragraphs?
A. Money. B. Age. C. Mind. D. Work.
33. What can we infer about language learning from paragraph 2?
A. Adults can pick up new things quickly. B. Children have a fixed language system.
C. Adults find the new rules easy to remember. D. Children outrun adults in language learning.
34. What is helpful for learning a language according to paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. Using it in daily life. B. Playing video games. C. Going to the library. D. Taking down its rules.
35. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Build up Your Vocabulary? B. Language Learning: Chance or Challenge?
C. Why do Children Learn Faster Than Adults? D. Is It too Late to Master a Foreign Language?

七、读后续写
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In high school, many students may encounter difficulties in their studies, and so did I. Sometimes, I would become very confused. Math problems that seemed to be impossible to solve, puzzling grammar in English, and difficult historical events all made me feel at a loss. I didn’t know where to start or how to improve.
Moreover, the fierce competition among classmates also added to my anxiety. Seeing others doing well, I couldn’t help but question myself, wondering if I was working hard enough. This sense of uncertainty made me doubt my abilities and future. I was losing patience and drive.
One sunny day, as I was sitting in the classroom feeling a bit bored, my teacher came in and announced that we would have a special project — to plant a tree in the schoolyard. I was excited at the thought of getting outside and doing something different.
I went outside and started digging the hole for the tree. I worked hard, feeling the dirt on my hands and the sweat on my forehead. As I was working, a classmate, Mary, came over and said, “Hey, you’re really putting a lot of effort into this!” I smiled and replied, “Yeah, I want this tree to grow strong. It feels like we’re doing something meaningful.” Mary nodded in agreement, “Definitely. And it’s amazing to think about how we’re all part of this process of growth.”
As the weeks passed, I would visit the tree often, observing the little tree as it faced many challenges, including harsh weather and strong winds. But each time, it overcame them and continued to grow taller and stronger, providing shade and shelter for us. Its journey in the wind and rain was a test of its perseverance (坚持) and growth. It made me wonder whether I could be like the tree, growing and changing.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
One day, as I stood by a tree lost in thought, my teacher approached me.

Although he warns against getting into the habit of taking maps routine, if you get a good sleep at night and feel energetic during the day, you most likely do not need to nap, he added. Study show that napping can improve your well being if done right. However, napping for too long can end up having a negative impact on your overall health and may also shorten your lifespan. Chelsea roche had sleep expert at sleep testing firm weather, told news week that people who take long maps are likely to get low quality sleep at night. He said poor sleep at night has made negative effects on help. Additionally, we also see high rates of sleep disorders in people who require long nap during the day. Another consideration is that people who need long nap are generally pretty tired and leave you during the day, and therefore they are more likely to spend a lot of time sitting down, according to rush dasgupta, chief medical adviser for sleep advisor meeting. 【解析】
【原文】M: Hi, everyone. I am the health coach of MLK health center. Here I want to talk about fitness trackers, which have been popular in some fitness communities in the last few years. But now the idea of not wearing running watches is gaining popularity. Why?
If people forget to wear the device, they are less likely to exercise, because they wouldn’t receive credit for their efforts. Another potential concern is that some people feel controlled or pressured by the devices if they didn’t achieve their goals.
Running watch-free can also be beneficial. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his overall running time.
So if you have a fitness watch, I am not saying that it’s all bad. But if you find yourself being a little addicted and caring too much about what the watch says, then you may check yourself and take it off a few days a week.

【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要探讨了年龄对语言学习的影响,以及成年人学习新语言的挑战与方法,并给出了积极的学习建议。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Learning a new language can be a big challenge at any age; however, it seems to be especially difficult to master a foreign tongue as we age. (在任何年龄学习一门新语言都可能是一个巨大的挑战;然而,随着年龄增长,掌握一门外语似乎变得尤其困难。)”和第二段最后一句“Children are relatively more active, open-minded and their language system is not fixed, meaning it is less work for them to pick up new things. (儿童相对更活跃、思想更开放,他们的语言系统尚未固定,这意味着他们学习新事物更容易。)”可知,前两段主要围绕年龄对语言学习的影响展开,指出年龄越大学习越困难,儿童学习更容易。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第二、三句“If we start a new language after youth, however, we are adding a new set of rules to our mind. That is why we find it difficult to learn a new language — we’re building a new speech system when we are not young any more. (然而,如果我们在青年时期之后开始学习一门新语言,我们是在向大脑中添加一套新规则。这就是为什么我们觉得学习一门新语言很困难——我们是在不再年轻的时候构建一个新的语言系统。)”以及最后一句“Children are relatively more active, open-minded and their language system is not fixed, meaning it is less work for them to pick up new things. (儿童相对更活跃、思想更开放,他们的语言系统尚未固定,这意味着他们学习新事物更容易。)”可知,成年人因为语言系统已固定、需要构建新系统而学习困难,儿童因为系统未固定而学习更容易,由此可推知儿童在语言学习方面比成年人更有优势。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“If you often share your daily experience with others in that language, what you’re learning is related to you. (如果你经常用那种语言与他人分享你的日常经历,那么你所学的就与你自身相关。)”可知,在日常生活中使用所学语言与他人交流,能够使学习内容与自身产生关联,有助于语言学习。因此在生活中使用语言对于学习语言是有帮助的。
【35题详解】

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 One day, as I stood by the tree lost in thought, my teacher approached me. She asked, “What are you thinking about?” I explained my realization about the tree and how it mirrored my struggles. My teacher smiled warmly and said, “That’s exactly right. Just like the tree, you will face challenges, but you must keep growing. You need to persevere, adapt, and find strength within yourself. Remember, every difficulty you overcome makes you stronger.” Her words impressed me deeply, and I felt a renewed sense of determination. I decided then and there to approach my studies with the same persistence as the tree.
Reflecting on it now, I realize this conversation was a turning point in my life. Inspired by the tree’s growth and my teacher’s encouragement, I began to tackle my academic challenges . Slowly but surely, I noticed improvements in my grades. More importantly, I learned to consider challenges as opportunities for growth. This shift in mindset not only helped me academically but also taught me a lifelong lesson about the power of perseverance and the beauty of continuous learning. Whenever I face obstacles now, I remember the tree and the wisdom it taught me, reminding me that with patience and determination, I can overcome any adversity.
