For Ravanov Eldar, his Chinese name, He Yan, bridges two worlds. In 2022, encouraged by his father, he began learning Chinese. Starting with online lessons and HSK (汉语水平考试) Level 1 materials, he struggled through six months of self-study. “It was really challenging. I felt like I was hardly keeping up,” he admits. Seeing his determination, his father found the Confucius Institute at Baku State University just a half-hour drive from home. From then on, attending Chinese classes after school became his regular habit, and his language skills improved quickly. An important moment came when he won third place in the Azerbaijani “Chinese Bridge” competition in 2023, earning a summer camp trip to China. As he remembers, one memory clearly stands out: practising the famously difficult character “biang” in a calligraphy class. “Many Chinese people can’t even write it,” he says proudly. “I broke it down stroke (笔画) by stroke until I could write it easily. That experience gave me so much confidence.” In September 2024, He became the youngest international student at Tianjin University that year. Over the next 12 months, he attended more than 20 campus events, from hosting New Year celebrations and performing in “Chinese Bridge” voice acting competitions and writing speeches rich with classical Chinese sayings. “One of my favourite sayings is, ‘A sharp sword comes from grinding; plum flowers bloom through bitter cold’,” he says. “Repeating and reflecting on these words not only improved my Chinese but also gave me strength.” Now a freshman pursuing electronic information engineering at the University of Science and Technology of China, he imagines a future where digital technology and energy new ideas meet. He hopes to build connections between Azerbaijan’s oil and gas resources, Caspian’s wind energy, and China’s making products and computing power. “I want to tell stories in Chinese,” he says. “And use technology to solve real-world problems.” 24. How did He Yan’s father assist in his Chinese learning? A. He drove him to China for a summer camp. B. He taught him online lessons for six months. C. He recommended HSK Level 1 materials to him. D. He helped find a nearby place for formal classes. 25. What is the character “biang” used to show? A. A relaxing activity during his summer camp. B. He Yan’s strong will to overcome challenges. C. The extreme difficulty of Chinese handwriting. D. The pride many Chinese take in their language. 26. What does He Yan gain from reflecting on classical Chinese sayings? A. Opportunities to host campus events. B. Deeper interest in engineering technology. C. Improvement in both language and mindset. D. Ways to connect resources between two countries. 27. What message does the text convey? A. Rome is not built in a day. B. Where there is a will, there is a way. C. A good beginning is half the battle. D. Actions speak louder than words. C If you’re enjoying a glass of Guinness beer on vacation, remember to thank the brewery (酿酒厂) . Without Guinness, we might not have such an important science tool for statistics today. William Sealy Gosset was the head experimental brewer at Guinness at the turn of the 20th century, and he had a problem. Guinness was interested in boosting production, and Gosset needed to find a way to test large, hard-to-handle populations by examining a smaller sample size. If he succeeded, it would allow the company to streamline its processes for everything from quality control to buying ingredients in large quantity. For example, if Guinness wanted only hop flowers (啤酒花) with a specific resin (树脂) content, how sure could it be that a small sample of the crop was representative of the whole crop? Testing the entire crop would be impossible, testing even a large sample would be economically infeasible, and testing a small sample could introduce statistical noise into the equation. Unfortunately, statisticians were concerned with larger sample sizes at the time, and hadn’t investigated the question. To find the answer, Guinness sent Gosset to University College London in 1906 so he could learn from biostatistician Karl Pearson. By comparing the averages of small sample sizes to the averages of larger sample sizes, Gosset determined how much the two differed, allowing him to develop the t-distribution. Large samples produce a standard bell curve. However, Gosset’s t-distribution for small samples had a lower peak and thicker ends. This showed that small samples naturally contain more statistical noise. Publishing in Biometrika in 1908, Gosset created what’s now known as the “Student’s t-test”. The test, later improved by famous mathematician Ronald Fisher, allows statisticians to check if a sample result was meaningfully different from the whole group. Today, it’s an important tool used by researchers in every scientific field. The t-test represented an enormous scientific leap forward, and it wasn’t developed for war, or even out of any basic necessity— simply to brew a glass of beer. 28. What was the key challenge Gosset faced while working at Guinness? A. He couldn’t improve the quality of Guinness beer. B. He failed to buy enough ingredients in large quantity. C. He needed to test large populations via small samples. D. He couldn’t streamline the beer-making processes. 29. What does the underlined word “infeasible” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Unreasonable. B. Unlikely. C. Unpopular. D. Impractical. 30. Why did Guinness send Gosset to University College London? A. To seek solutions to his statistical problem. B. To introduce the t-distribution to statisticians. C. To work with Ronald Fisher on the t-test. D. To learn to brew better beer for the company. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. The history of Guinness beer and its popularity. B. What the characteristics of small sample testing are. C. The life story of William Sealy Gosset and his career. D. How a brewery problem led to a major statistical tool. D Smell is key to ant life. Each ant has a special chemical on its body that tells others it is from the same group. A new study suggests that human air pollution, especially ozone (臭氧) , is damaging these important smells and causing chaos in ant societies. Each ant species has a unique smell formed from stable chemicals. Unfortunately, these chemicals react easily with ozone, a pollutant that has increased due to human activity. Ozone levels are much higher in cities, sometimes reaching 100 parts per billion, compared to about 10 parts per billion in cleaner areas. Researchers wanted to see if higher ozone would change the ants’ smell and cause attack when they returned to the group. They exposed six different ant species to air with 100 parts per billion of ozone, similar to polluted city air in summer. After just 20 minutes, the ozone had significantly damaged the chemicals that help ants recognize friends. In five of the six species, this led to ants from the same group attacking their exposed nestmates. Scientists were astonished by how strongly the ants behaviour changed. Even though the special smell was tiny, it was very important for telling who was family. In another experiment, exposing small ants and their babies to similar ozone levels made the parents stop caring for them, causing the death of babies. Ants are vital to our ecosystems. There are about 30,000 species, and their total mass is similar to all birds and mammals combined. They help dig soil, spread seeds, and clean the environment. Their complex societies can teach us much. While insect decline is often linked to pesticides (杀虫剂), climate change, and habitat loss, this study shows air pollution may harm insects in unexpected ways. Ozone has already been shown to mess up communication between flowers and pollinators (传粉者), and between flies. This research indicates that air pollution may have even wider effects by threatening the very function of social insect groups. 32. Why did the researchers expose ants to air with 100 parts per billion of ozone? A. To prove that ozone is the most harmful pollutant. B. To find out the number of ant species in polluted areas. C. To test how ozone affects ants’ smell and group behaviour. D. To study how ants protect their nestmates from pollution. 33. How did the scientists feel about the results of the experiments? A. Unconcerned. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Surprised. 34. What can we infer about ants from Paragraph 5? A. They perform critical ecological functions. B. Their total mass is smaller than that of all birds. C. They can adapt quickly to polluted environments. D. Their social behaviour is more complex than that of humans. 35. What does the last paragraph mainly suggest? A. Pesticides are the main cause of insect decline. B. Air pollution can have unpredictable effects on social insects. C. The function of social insect groups is easy to damage. D. Ants are more sensitive to pollution than other insects. Being a camp counselor (辅导员) is an exciting and important job! He loved celebrating his birthday with love and attention. Each year, he began the day replying to warm messages and calls. Then, he met his friends at Carmelo’s café, where he enjoyed free coffee and cakes. At lunch, he returned home to a delicious meal prepared by his wife, Melina. This year, however, things seemed different. After finishing lunch at home, Tanino asked, “Can we have pasta with tuna (金枪鱼意面) next Sunday?” Melina shook her head. “No, Rosanna doesn’t like it.” Surprised, Tanino suggested sweet-and-sour liver (肝) . Again, Melina refused, saying Rosanna couldn’t eat it. This was unusual. In their family, the birthday person usually chose the menu. Feeling upset, Tanino said generously, “You choose then. It’s not just my meal.” Later, something caught his eye: the surprise on Melina’s face. Had she forgotten his birthday? If his wife forgot, would his friends remember? The next day, at Carmelo’s café, Tanino tested the waters by asking if they’d meet on Sunday. One by one, his friends declined due to family plans. Convinced they’d forgotten, Tanino felt hurt. Feeling down, Tanino passed a shop and bought three boxes of chocolates— if no one else would celebrate, he’d do it himself! As his birthday approached, Tanino expected nothing. He even looked forward to seeing regret on others’ faces. But that morning, his phone lit up with messages and calls. His friends invited him to the café the next day! At lunch, Melina served all his favourite dishes, and his daughter Rosanna arrived, bringing gifts and flowers. Tanino was moved, though still puzzled. Would they have come if he hadn’t reminded Melina days earlier? Just then, Rosanna raised her glass and said, “Happy Birthday, Dad — and Happy Mother’s Day, Mum!” Tanino froze. How could he have missed that? Suddenly, everything made sense. His friends weren’t free because they were with their mums. He, who had judged everyone, had forgotten the most important part of the weekend! “Sorry,” Tanino apologized to Melina, “I was so selfish I forgot your day.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Dad, you’re going to be a grandfather!” Rosanna said happily. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 机密★启用前 2026届高三第二学期5月质量检测 英语 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 注意事项: 1. 6. A quiet environment helps me focus better on my studies. And a study desk is a must-have as I need to do a lot of reading and writing. I hope my request is acceptable. Looking forward to meeting you soon! One possible version: “Sorry,” Tanino apologized to Melina, “I was so selfish I forgot your day.” A wave of guilt washed over him as he spoke. He felt small and ashamed, recalling how he had been angry at the café and even bought chocolates to comfort himself, wrongly accusing everyone of forgetting him. Hearing his words, Melina’s face softened into a warm smile. “It’s okay, really,” she reassured him. “Actually, I’ve moved on to the next level now.” Tanino looked at her, puzzled, until she exchanged a meaningful glance with Rosanna. That’s when he noticed Rosanna’s cheeks and the gentle hand she rested on her belly. “Dad, you’re going to be a grandfather!” Rosanna said happily. Tanino’s eyes went wide with shock, and for a second, he couldn’t find his voice. Then, overwhelming joy replaced his surprise. He leaped up and wrapped his arms around Rosanna, followed by a big hug for Melina. “This is the best birthday present ever!” he exclaimed, his heart swelling with happiness. He finally understood why Melina had seemed distracted and why Rosanna couldn’t eat liver. Everything made perfect sense now. They hadn’t forgotten his birthday; they had been busy preparing the most wonderful surprise for him.
