Two years later, 31-year-old Ed climbed over 8,848 meters, the height of the world’s highest mountain, by going up and down his parents’ stairs 2,783 times. When he finished, he told a news reporter he had loved it although it sometimes was “painful” and “boring”. He also raised £46,000 for charity.

It’s the weekend, and you decide to visit your grandma who lives alone. When you arrive, however, you realize that she has another visitor, and you hear through the door the two of them laughing. You walk in and find that the visitor, sitting across the dining table from your grandma, is a robot. It’s laughing at your grandma’s joke.
Such a robot is something that a team of scientists at Kyoto University in Japan are working toward. They are teaching a robot named Erica how to laugh while talking to a human.
“We think that one of the important abilities of robots is empathy,” said Dr. Koji Inoue, the leader of the team. So we decided that one way a robot can empathize with users is to share their laughter.
Erica’s development began with recording different human laughter. The scientists recorded more than 80 conversations. Then they studied the conversations and put the laughter in these conversations into different groups. Next, they trained Erica to learn the characteristics of each group of laughter in order to show them correctly in different situations.
Although the scientists have made some encouraging progress, they said that we are not able to have a natural talk with Erica as we have with a friend now. But then wait a few years, and you may find your own self at that dining table, telling jokes to a robot named Erica.

Have you ever counted the number of remote controls (遥控器) in your home? There are probably more than you realize. That’s because they are used for all kinds of everyday activities, such as changing TV channels, opening doors. Toy cars also make use of remote controls. But how did they become such a common feature of our lives?
While you may think that the remote control is a fairly new piece of technology, it actually dates back over 100 years. In 1898, the famous inventor Nikola Tesla showed what is considered to be the world’s first remote control in New York City. Using a box with an antenna (天线), he controlled the movements of a small boat. This early remote control was able to communicate with the boat using radio waves. Although nothing much came of this first invention, it served as the first step in the development of modern remote controls.
Remote controls have come a long way since Nikola Tesla’s invention. They became common in homes around the world after the 1950s, when the Zenith Radio Company first paired them with TVs. Today, however, their importance spreads well beyond changing channels as they can be used for activities that are too dangerous for humans. For example, remote-controlled robots can be sent into harmful environments while their operators guide them from a safe distance.
Remote controls are still being improved on all the time, and now many ordinary people can buy advanced technologies like remote-controlled drones (无人驾驶), which can take amazing photos and videos from on high. With the development of voice-operated remote controls, we may soon be able to work our phones without even touching them. So when it comes to remote controls, who knows what the future will bring?
41. What is written at the beginning of the text?
A. The popularity of remote controls B. The result of a research on remote controls.
C. The problems of remote controls. D. The styles of remote controls.
42. What does the second paragraph NOT tell us about the first remote control?
A. Who invented it. B. What it looked like.
C. What it controlled. D. How it was made.
43. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. It still has a long way for remote controls to go.
B. Remote controls have had great progress.
C. Remote controls have experienced many difficulties.
D. It takes a long time for remote controls to develop.
44. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the future remote controls?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Uncertain.
45. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To make us fall in love with remote controls.
B. To encourage us to invent more remote controls.
C. To introduce the history and use of remote controls.
D. To express the need for more remote controls.

Ed was a professional football player, but in 2017 he had an accident in a swimming pool. After that, he couldn’t move his body from the shoulders down.
Doctors told him that he’d probably never walk again, but Ed didn’t want to believe this. He had recently got engaged (订婚) to the woman who is now his wife and he said that she was the main reason he wanted to get better. He spent six days staring at his toes (脚趾) and trying to make them move—and, finally, he succeeded! This was the start of a long journey.
While in hospital, Ed met Paul, a man in his late thirties. Doctors had also told Paul he would never walk again, but Ed encouraged him not to give up and six months later, Paul told Ed he was walking with a stick.
Only a year after his accident, Ed climbed the highest mountain in Wales. Since then he has also climbed a 6,500-meter mountain in Nepal and he said that after each big climb he noticed his body could do new movements.
Ed hopes his story can help people. That’s why he started his own charity, M2M, which aims to support “people facing challenges in life”.
31. Who did Ed want to get better mainly for?
A. His parents. B. His doctor. C. His friend. D. His wife.
32. What is Ed like according to Paragraph 3?

a. Ed started M2M. b. Ed succeeded in making his toes move.
c. Ed had an accident in a swimming pool. d. Ed climbed the highest mountain in Wales.

A. c-e-b-d-a B. c-b-d-e-a C. e-a-b-d-c D. e-b-d-c-a
35. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Football Player. B. A Challenge Lover.
C. A Charity Worker. D. A Mountain Climber.
【答案】31. D 32. B 33. D 34. B 35. B

【31题详解】
第一段指出Ed遭遇意外后“couldn’t move his body from the shoulders down”,第二段明确说明:“he said that she was the main reason he wanted to get better”,其中“she”指代前文的“the woman who is now his wife”,因此主要为了他的妻子。
【32题详解】
第三段讲述Ed在医院遇到被医生判定无法再行走的Paul,“Ed encouraged him not to give up”并且六个月后Paul已经能拄着拐杖走路,这体现了Ed乐于助人的品质。
【33题详解】
第五段原文:“Ed climbed over 8,848 meters...by going up and down his parents’ stairs 2,783 times. When he finished, he told a news reporter he had loved it although it sometimes was ‘painful’ and ‘boring’”,“it”指代前面提到的“going up and down his parents’ stairs 2,783 times”这一行为。
【34题详解】
文章顺序为:第一段“in 2017 he had an accident in a swimming pool”(c)→第二段“ He spent six days staring at his toes and trying to make them move — and, finally, he succeeded!”(b)→第四段“Ed climbed the highest mountain in Wales”(d)→第五段“going up and down his parents’ stairs 2,783 times”(e)→第六段“he started his own charity, M2M”(a),因此顺序为c-b-d-e-a。

A. By asking a question. B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving an example. D. By making a comparison.
37. Scientists are teaching Erica how ________ while talking to a human.

【答案】41. A 42. D 43. B 44. A 45. C

第一段第一句和第二句指出:“Have you ever counted the number of remote controls in your home? There are probably more than you realize.”以及“they are used for all kinds of everyday activities”,这直接说明遥控器在日常生活中广泛存在,即其“普及性”。
【42题详解】
第二段提到“Nikola Tesla showed what is considered to be the world’s first remote control”(发明者),“a box with an antenna”(外观),“controlled the movements of a small boat”(控制对象),但未说明“它是如何制造的”。
【43题详解】
该句出现在第三段开头,下文提到它们“became common in homes”以及可用于“activities that are too dangerous for humans”,说明与最初发明相比已有巨大进步,因此意为“遥控器取得了很大进展”。
【44题详解】
最后一段提到“Remote controls are still being improved on all the time”以及“who knows what the future will bring?”,语气积极且充满期待,因此态度是“充满希望的”。
【45题详解】

We all love spending time by the sea. Some lucky ones might live on the coast and enjoy benefits (益处) all around the year. ____46____. Most of us would say we feel healthier by the ocean. In the past, doctors would actually suggest spending time by the sea to their patients. And research has shown that people who live on the coast are more likely to believe their health is good compared to those living in a city. So how do we benefit, exactly?

【解析】
【详解】根据语境,此处是表达过去喜欢打篮球但现在可能不再喜欢或情况已变。英语中表示过去习惯或状态常用“used to + 动词原形”结构,“like doing sth.”表示“喜欢做某事”。所以此处可填I used to like playing basketball。
57. 你想知道Lucy过去戴眼镜吗,你可以这样问:
Lucy, _________________________________________________?

【答案】
Hello, everyone! I’m Li Hua from Grade 9. I’m so glad to have the chance to introduce some inventions to you.
The zipper was invented in 1893 by Whitcomb. It is widely used for making clothes and bags. Potato chips were created by George Crum in 1853. They are popular among young people today. Sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. In the past, they were for asking for help, but now they are for festivals. The camera appeared in 1839 in France. It helps us take photos and remember beautiful moments.
In my opinion, inventions change our lives. They make things easier and more colorful. We should study hard to create more useful things in the future.
