The Wrong Club
I looked at the club sign-up forms on the notice board. The choices swam before me: outdoor club, computer club, photography club and more, all looking inviting. But I could only pick one.
The debate (辩论) club was an easy choice for me. I remembered lifting the debate trophy (奖杯) and being cheered by my classmates in my old school. However, in this new school, debating was considered “boring” and photography “cool”. Many students scrambled to sign up for photography. I quickly tried to add my name after theirs, but my pen kept going dry. It felt like even the pen knew I should have signed up for debate. I shut down the thought, telling myself photography would be fun—it had to be if I needed to fit in (融入). I needed to feel I belonged.
When the photography club met, I knew I had made the wrong choice. I didn’t own a camera, yet there I was, listening to the others discussing camera settings. The black-and-white photos looked down from a line on the wall. It seemed that they were silently telling me I shouldn’t be here. I was completely lost.
I asked to leave for a drink, but I headed straight to the debate club instead. Outside the door, I listened to the advisor, Ms. Holmes, outlining the debate topics, which sounded like pleasant music. How I’d missed that excitement! This was where I belonged. I stepped inside; all faces turned toward me.
“Excuse me, Ms. Holmes,” I said nervously. “Can I still join the team?” She shook her head. “I’m afraid it’s full.” I must have looked so disappointed, because she smiled. “If you really want to join us, you can be a stand-in, taking the place of anyone absent. It means you have to learn to argue from both sides.”
“I can do that.” My eyes brightened. I ran back to the photography advisor. Luckily, he greenlit my decision to switch (调换) clubs.
No one on our team missed a meet, so I didn’t debate that season. But I had no regrets, because I realized something valuable: being true to myself was more important than being popular, In fact, it was the only way to be truly cool.
24. The writer chose the photography club at first because ________.
A. he had no other choice B. he followed his friend’s advice
C. he was interested in photography D. he wanted to fit in at the new school
25. How did the writer feel when the photography club met?
A. Excited. B. Lost. C. Relaxed. D. Angry.
26. What did the writer do after he stepped into the debate room?
A. He listened to music at the debate club.
B. He took the place of an absent team member.
C. He told Ms. Holmes he wanted to leave for a drink.
D. He asked Ms. Holmes about joining the debate team.
27. What did the writer probably learn from his experience?
A. Joining clubs is good for students. B. Staying true to oneself matters a lot.
C. Popular activities can teach us much. D. Nothing is impossible if you stick to it.
C
No question is too small when Kayla Chege, a high school student in Kansas, uses artificial intelligence (AI). She turns to AI for guidance on everything from back-to-school shopping to her birthday party planning. While you might think of AI as a homework helper for students, it is increasingly (渐增地) becoming a digital companion (陪伴) for many of them—offering not just answers, but also advice, emotional-support, and friendship.
In a new study from Common Sense Media, a group that studies the healthy use of screens and digital media, researchers surveyed more than 1,000 teens in the US. The results show that over 70% of the teens have ever used AI as a companion. About one in three teens have used them for social interactions (互动) like emotional support or friendships, and they find these conversations with AI as satisfying as, or even more satisfying than, those with real-life friends. Despite half of the teens distrusting AI’s advice, one-third have discussed serious matters with it instead of with people.
Those findings are worrisome, says Michael Robb, the study’s lead author. He points out that rapidly (快速地) growing AI, with few controls, is becoming as integrated with teenagers as smartphones and social media are. That means AI is no longer just a tool but is already becoming a necessary part of teens’ lives
Why are so many teenagers turning to AI for companionship? This is mainly because AI could offer real benefits that meet their needs. AI friends can be personalized with different characteristics, offering conversations that feel human-like and giving emotional support. Talking to AI makes teens feel heard and understood, giving them a strong sense of comfort. As some teens say, it’s because AI “is always there for you”, “never gets bored with you” and “never judges you.”
While the idea of an always-available friend sounds interesting, educators and researchers worry that relying (依赖) too much on AI could have harmful effects on teenagers. Teenage years are an important time for developing a strong sense of self as well as social abilities. If teens always turn to AI for advice, agreement and comfort, they may miss chances to think on their own, learn how to deal with disagreements and understand others’ emotions. This could finally weaken their ability to form and keep real-life friendships. Moreover, AI may sometimes share misleading information or offer poor advice, which can be risky for young users.
As more teens consider AI as a companion, Robb warns that it should be a wake-up call for parents, teachers, and the government; that is, there could be huge risks when choosing AI for companionship over real-life friends.
28. Why does the writer use the example of Kayla Chege in Paragraph 1?
A. To lead into a topic. B. To explain an idea.
C. To stress a difference. D. To suggest a solution.
29. The underlined words “integrated with” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.
A. really harmful to B. strongly doubted by
C. highly encouraging for D. closely connected to
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Misusing AI may lead to a loss of privacy.
B. Most teens choose AI companions over real people.
C. Overusing AI may cause teens to fail socially in real life.
D. Teens become less satisfied with themselves when using AI.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. AI: The Best Friend for Teens B. AI Friends: Promise or Problem
C. AI: What Can Teens Learn from it D. AI Friends: Risking a Lot for Nothing
六、阅读表达(共10分,第44-46题每题2分,第47题4分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
When I was a child, my weight was a big problem. By the age of 14, I weighed 225 pounds and my doctor warned me about the health risks. I started to eat healthily and exercise more. Within a year, I lost about 80 pounds. For the first time, people noticed me. The attention felt good, but it slowly changed the way I saw myself.
I began to believe I had to look or act a certain way to be accepted. Not satisfied with who I was, I kept trying to fix my looks and behavior to please other people. Over time, the pressure (压力) in my mind kept growing. I saw only my mistakes and started to feel that I was worse than others. I pushed myself to be “better”, but soon I felt tired, empty and far from happy.
The turning point came when my best friend said to me, “Jane, you’re always looking for something wrong with yourself. What would it take for you to just accept who you are?” Her words hit me hard. I realized that I couldn’t truly improve or be happy until I first accepted myself. That moment marked the beginning of my self-acceptance journey.
I started reading about self-acceptance and practiced it in small ways each day. The first step was noticing my strengths. When a classmate told me I did a good job on the group project, I thanked her with a big smile. I stopped doubting praise, which helped me see myself more clearly and feel more confident. I also stayed close to friends who lifted me up. They supported me without judgment (评判) and encouraged me when I felt unsure. I felt calmer and free to be myself with them around. What’s more, I began to talk to myself with kindness. When I made mistakes, I told myself, “It’s okay. Everyone makes mistakes,” instead of feeling bad all day. It helped me move on more easily.
As I accepted my imperfections, I became less afraid of failure and more willing to try new things. I no longer felt controlled by self-doubt. I learned that true improvement is only possible when I love and accept myself first. This journey has taught me the real secret to happiness.

选做题(共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容,在给出提示词的空白处用括号内所给词的正确形式填空。
Before 1950, crossing busy streets in Britain was dangerous! Then engineers ____41____ (test) a new rule with a smart design: thick white stripes (条纹) that drivers could see even at night. They called it the zebra crossing. Soon, drivers learned ____42____ (stop) whenever people stepped onto the stripes. The rule was simple but powerful—it protected millions of ____43____ (life) without slowing traffic too much. Good rules are like helping hands: they keep life moving ____44____ (safe) and smoothly. After all, the best rules guide us forward instead of holding us back.
Curiosity is one of the most important qualities a person can have. If we’re curious, we’re naturally going to learn, grow, and think beyond what we already know.
Most of us are more curious than we realize. All too often, it isn’t an absence of curiosity—it’s just that we don’t know what questions to ask. We haven’t been given the spark (火花) yet. That’s the magic of curiosity: it starts with a gap (差距) in our understanding. We hear something, read or see something, and a tiny voice inside says, “Wait...what does that mean?” That moment—that itch—is where curiosity is born.
The other day, a friend of mine lit one of my candles and made a passing comment about not wanting to blow it out too soon. The way she said it—so casually, like everybody should know it—immediately caught my attention. I asked her what she meant, and she explained that to make a candle last longer, we should let it burn for at least an hour the first time, so the top layer melts evenly (融化均匀). I had never heard that before. To her, this might have been basic knowledge—but to me, it was a whole new world. I had no idea this was something people knew; I hadn’t even known there was a question to ask.
And that’s the point—it was never really about the candle. That moment reminded me how much I don’t know. Not just about candles, but about everything. How many other things have I overlooked simply because I never thought to ask? In fact, we’re surrounded by learning opportunities all the time, but noticing them is a skill we have to build. We have to train ourselves to catch those sparks.
So how do we get better at being curious? One of the easiest ways is to surround ourselves with curiosity. Look for people—online and in real life—who make us think differently. Not necessarily people who agree with us, but people who are curious themselves—who love learning and can’t help but share what they’ve discovered, who make us want to pause (暂停) and check something, who don’t have all the answers—but are excited to find them alongside us.
We don’t have all the answers and we never will. But what we can try to do is to approach (靠近) life as learners—paying attention to details, asking questions, and being open to new ideas. Because sometimes, a single spark—a candle, a question—can open up your mind in a way that would have been impossible just a few days earlier. Sometimes it leads you somewhere totally unexpected. Sometimes it changes everything.
45. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Curiosity is an unusual quality for people.
B. Curiosity has a lot to do with how well we learn.
C. Curiosity disappears quickly once we have all the answers.
D. Curiosity begins when we notice gaps in our understanding.
46. Why does the writer include the story in Paragraph 3?
A. To give advice on how to make candles last longer.
B. To explain that basic knowledge matters in daily life.
C. To advise us to pay close attention to small things around us.
D. To show how curiosity can take shape in everyday experiences.
47. Which situation best shows the message of the passage?
A. Giving a helping hand to those in need.
B. Going over notes carefully before a test.
C. Having conversations with different people.
D. Making plans ahead and managing time wisely.
