The school can’t pay for it.” “We could have a school sale to get some money!” shouted Emma. All the children and teachers thought it was a good idea. They held the school sale on Sunday. Each class had a booth. Some booths had games and prizes. One class sold hot dogs. One class painted people’s faces. Everyone had a great time. On Monday, Mrs. Ford’s class added up the money from the school sale. “Oh, no!” Yuki said. “We only made $316!” No one spoke. A few children sighed. Then the headmaster Mr. Peter came. Several trucks from different stores arrived one by one and brought all the things they needed. That weekend, children, teachers and parents fixed up the park together. But for some children in China, this idea has taken on a deeper meaning. Wu Qi, a dog trainer in Shanghai, started the Paw for Heal (PFH) program in China about eight years ago. The program trains dogs for animal-assisted therapy (动物辅助治疗). These animals help old people feel quiet and less stressed. They also help people with mental (精神上的) illnesses. In Shanghai, the dogs have been trained to help kids with autism (自闭症) who are easily scared by their environments. When the PFH dogs are around, they feel much better. Wu Qi, known as “Uncle Dog” by many autistic children, has a personal connection to the power of dogs, having been deeply introverted as a child until he found a puppy that became his companion and helped change his life. Pet owners can train their pets to become therapy dogs through PFH. Although this training is difficult (only 20 percent of dogs can pass the program), it also helps a lot of people. Wang Lei, one of the pet owners, said in a report by Sixth Tone, “She (my dog) makes me happy every day, and I think she can bring happiness to other people in need as well”. Animal-assisted therapy is new to China, but it’s gaining traction. Wu Qi’s Paw for Heal program, established in 2012, now has about 300 therapy dogs in China, with 95 percent of them being pets trained by their owners. The benefits of therapy dogs extend beyond individual therapy sessions. They are also used in hospitals to help patients, providing comfort and reducing stress. But Wu has high hopes for the future, as he is now working together with a British university to improve his program. “Through learning from the European team, China may shorten the time to catch up with Western countries in this field by several years,” Wu said in the Sixth Tone report. This collaboration is an example of the growing UK-China partnership in higher education, which includes over 20 Joint Institutes and 250 Joint Programs. Such partnerships can support the development of China’s higher education environment and bring new insights to programs like PFH. 53. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Dogs are man’s best friends. B. Dogs can help sick kids feel better. C. Dogs can play with kids. D. Dogs are smarter than other animals. 54. How can the PFH program help children with autism? A. It can introduce them to a new form of exercise. B. It can help them become professional dog trainers. C. It can give them a new kind of drug to cure autism. D. It can provide them with a sense of safety and companionship. 55. Which of the following is TRUE according to this article? A. The PFH program was started by a British university many years ago. B. The PFH program has been in operation for over twenty years in China. C. The PFH program trains dogs to help in animal-assisted therapy for different groups. D. The PFH program can make sure that all dogs will become therapy dogs after training. 56. What is Wu Qi’s view on the future of animal-assisted therapy in China? A. B 【解析】 【导语】本文介绍了吴起在中国创办PFH项目,通过训练治疗犬为自闭症儿童、老人及精神疾病患者提供动物辅助治疗,并希望向欧洲学习以推动其发展。 【53题详解】 第一段指出,PFH项目训练狗进行动物辅助治疗,帮助老人平静、减轻压力,并帮助精神疾病患者,尤其提到“help kids with autism who are easily scared ... they feel much better”,因此划线部分“this idea has taken on a deeper meaning”指的是狗不仅是朋友,还能帮助生病的孩子感觉更好。 【54题详解】 第二段明确说明“When the PFH dogs are around, they feel much better”,并提到吴起本人童年因小狗陪伴改变性格,说明治疗犬为自闭症儿童提供安全感和陪伴。 【56题详解】 最后一段吴起表示“Through learning from the European team, China may shorten the time to catch up with Western countries by several years”,说明他认为通过学习欧洲,中国能更快进步。 D ①In most places in the world today, it is easy to find healthy food. With supermarkets, buying healthy food like fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat is easy and convenient (便利的). However, it is also easy to find unhealthy food today. Supermarkets and other stores sell good food, but they also sell frozen foods and junk food like chips, candy, and cookies. A lot of food today has chemicals (化学药品). Research has shown that many of these chemicals are bad for our health. So did people in the past eat healthier than we do today? ②A century ago, people didn’t eat junk food or frozen food. Instead, they ate natural foods without chemicals. On the other hand, their natural foods were not always as good as food today. In the past, meat often came from sick animals. It’s not healthy to eat meat from a sick animal. In most places today, laws make sure that food is safe. ③In most countries today, we can buy a variety (各种) of foods. We can buy oranges in the winter and apples in the summer. Healthy fruits and vegetables are available (可获得的) at any time of year. These foods come from all over the world. In the past, this kind of variety was not possible. People could eat certain foods only in certain seasons. ④We also eat much more meat, sugar, fattening foods, and chemicals today than people did a century ago. Studies show that these things can cause (引起) heart disease (疾病) and a variety of other health problems. However, people live much longer now. Today, the average (平均) person lives for 70 to 80 years. However,100 years ago, the average person lived for only about 50 years. People live longer because we have better medicine now. But people also have longer lives because healthy food is usually available. ⑤So ________? Yes and no. People in the past did eat more natural food than we do now. But, in some ways, we also eat better today. We can eat healthier today than people did in the past. We just have to choose to eat good foods. 57. What makes food unhealthy today? A. Some of the chemicals. B. Sick animals. C. Supermarkets and stores. D. Frozen foods. 58. Why can people buy a variety of foods all year along according to Paragraph 3? A. Because supermarkets sell all kinds of foods. B. Because people need foods at any time of year. C. Because transportation (交通运输) is more convenient now. D. Because it’s easier to plant fruits and vegetables. 59. Which of the following can be put in ________ in Paragraph 5? (10’) 阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 The United Nations believes about 17 percent of the world’s food goes to waste each year. That amounts to 931 million tons of food being thrown away from homes, stores and food companies. The information comes from the UN Environment Program’s Food Waste Index Report 2021. The report says food waste is not only a problem in rich countries like Britain and the United States. It happens in poor countries, too, where food can go bad without cold storage. Most of the wasted food — 61 percent comes from homes. The rest comes from stores and food service companies. Sometimes stores offer reduced prices on larger amounts of food, so people buy too much food, but they do not always use it before it goes bad. Also, the writing on food containers (容器) can be hard to understand. In some cases, the producers put a date that shows when the food will be best to eat. Sometimes the food is still good for a number of days after the date, but people will throw it away. Food administrators (管理者) in the US have asked producers to label (标明) their products in a way that is easier for people to understand. Researchers say more attention should be paid to the influence of food waste on the world. In the past few years, because of food waste, an increasing amount of land has been required to plant crops. What’s more, more forests are also being cleared for more food production. If food waste is reduced, it might be possible to lessen (减少) the food production. 61. Yuki ran to get it, but she fell over an old tire (轮胎) and hurt her knee. “Mrs. Ford, that old park is awful! No one could play there without getting hurt. Maybe we could fix it up.” said Yuki. Mrs. Ford sighed (叹气) . “I think it would cost at least $11, 000. Peter came. A reporter from a TV station was with him. After knowing that the children didn’t make enough money, he made the school on the news that night. The reporter said, “Viewers, I know you care about the kids. We are short of money. But we could help fix up this park in other ways. Please think about it.” The whole town learned about the park. The next week, Mr. Peter came to the classroom and asked Mrs. Ford to bring her class out to the parking lot. The children could not believe what they saw! Several trucks from different stores arrived one by one and brought all the things they needed. That weekend, children, teachers and parents fixed up the park together. After a week, the park was ready to open. When asked to name the park, Mrs. Ford’s class chose “Rainbow Park”. “Rainbows are made up of lots of different colors,” Yuki told the reporter. “A lot of different people made this park. A. Everyone can enjoy themselves as a group. B. Children can fix an old park in their own way. C. Caring people can achieve great things together. D. Money is the most important thing to solve problems. C It is often said that dogs are “man’s best friends”. A. He doesn’t think this kind of therapy will be popular in China. B. He believes China can learn from Europe and get better quickly. C. He thinks China is already doing better than Western countries in this area. D. He thinks it will take a long time for China to catch up with Western countries.
