A cute animal with four legs? Actually, dogs are much more than that! There are many secrets about them. Let’s take a closer look into the world of dogs and learn more about them.
Dogs are famous for their great senses (感官) of smell and hearing. With over 100 million scent cells (嗅觉细胞), dogs can smell thousands of scents. And they can hear sounds from farther away than humans because of their special ear shape. These abilities make dogs important in many places. For example, in places like train stations and airports, police dogs can find out dangerous things like drugs and bombs (毒品和炸弹). And for blind people, guide dogs are very helpful. They can help them “see” and travel around safely.
Just like humans, most dogs have a favourite paw (爪子). They might be right-pawed or left-pawed. To figure out which paw your dog prefers, you can watch it walk and see which paw it usually puts forward first. Besides walking on paws, dogs also sweat (出汗) through them. Because of this, their paws are easy to get dirty with bacteria (细菌), and sometimes they give off (散发) a popcorn-like smell.
Dogs have many ways to communicate. One way they do this is by smelling each other’s butts (屁股). The special smell can help dogs learn about others’ gender (性别), feelings, and health. Dogs also use body language to “show” their feelings. For example, they may turn in circles to say hello or hold their tails between their legs when they are afraid or sad.

14.What cannot dogs learn by smelling others’ butts?
A.If (是否) they’re happy or not. B.If they’re helpful or not.

I still remember my primary school homework on animals. I decided 36 (write) about the whale (鲸鱼). I have loved them from a young age.
I’m not quite sure why I love them. It might be something about 37 (they) shape. They have a smooth shape, and their tails look like a heart. They also move so 38 (slow) and beautifully, like a tree dancing in the wind. This way, they seem very clever.
So, of course, one of my best 39 (memory) was when I got to see a type of whale called the Southern Right Whale in Argentina. Watching them moving smoothly in the water, I felt 40 (happy) than ever. They 41 (be) so beautiful!
And I’m not the only one that loves whales. Different peoples across the world have a special place for whales 42 their hearts. Take the Maori people in New Zealand as 43 example. Living by the ocean, they see whales as guardians (守护者) of the ocean and talk about them a lot in their 44 (tradition) stories.

三、语法填空(共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)
阅读下面短文,根据文章大意用所给单词的适当形式填空(未提供单词的,限填一词),使文章意思完整,正确。
Why was I interested in whales like the Maori people? 45 they need our protection. That’s what my school homework was about—animals we need to protect. Whales play a big role in the ocean. So, protecting whales means protecting the whole ocean.
