The small Texas school that I attended had a tradition that was very important to all eighth-grade students: the scholarship jacket. It was a beautiful gold and green jacket, the school colors. It was given to the student who had maintained the highest grades for eight years. The scholarship jacket was not paid for; it was free. Only one jacket was awarded each year.
I had been a straight-A student since the first grade, and this year I had been looking forward to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed eight children, so I knew I could never buy sports clothes or nice things. The scholarship jacket was my only chance.
In May, the final grades were posted. I had the highest average. I was so happy I could have screamed. I was sure I would get the jacket.
A week later, the principal called me into his office. He looked uncomfortable. “Martha,” he said, “there’s been a change in the policy this year about the scholarship jacket. This year the board has decided to charge fifteen dollars for the jacket.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. “But the jacket has always been free,” I whispered.
“I know,” he said. “But things are different now. If you are unable to pay the fifteen dollars, the jacket will be given to the next one in line.”
I knew who that was: Joann. Her father was the owner of the only store in town and a member of the school board.
I walked home slowly. When I told my father what had happened, he looked sad. “I’ll try to get the money,” he said. But I knew he couldn’t. We didn’t have extra money for anything.
The next day I went back to the principal’s office. “I won’t pay for the scholarship jacket,” I said. “If you have to pay for it, it won’t be a scholarship jacket anymore.”
He stared at me. Then he sighed. “Okay, Martha. We’ll make an exception in your case. You can have the jacket.”
I almost cried. I knew I had won something more important than a jacket. I had won self-respect.
24. Why did Martha attach great importance to the scholarship jacket?
A. She wanted to show it off to her classmates.
B. It was the only nice thing she could obtain.
C. Her father asked her to get it.
D. It could help her get into a good high school.
25. What do we know about Joann from the passage?
A. Her father had a high social status.
B. She had higher grades than Martha.
C. She was Martha’s close friend.
D. She refused to pay for the jacket.
26. Which of the following best describes Martha’s feeling when she was told she could get the jacket for free?
A. Amazed and annoyed.
B. Calm and unconcerned.
C. Disappointed and helpless.
D. Touched and proud.
27. What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A. Good grades can win us true respect.
B. We shouldn’t yield to the authority.
C. Standing firm on right brings more.
D. A reward’s value depends on whether it’s free.
C
A mock job advertisement that has done the rounds recently calls for a “killswitch engineer” for OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT. The description requires the successful applicant to stand by servers all day and unplug them “if this thing turns on us”.
Despite widespread fears of job losses owing to the rise of artificial-intelligence (AI) agents, it is not all dark humor. The technology is already creating new roles — to train agents, placing them in organizations and ensure that they behave. Many of these new jobs, moreover, require uniquely human skills.
Start with data annotators. No longer are they merely low-paid workers tediously tagging images. As AI models have become more advanced, experts in finance, law and medicine have increasingly been enlisted to help train them. Mercor, a startup that has built a platform to hire such smart people to help build bots, was recently valued at $10bn. Its chief executive says they earn $90 an hour on average.
Once bots are trained, teams of so-called forward deployed engineers (FDEs) are needed to put them into organizations. In practice, their jobs are a blend of developer, consultant and salesman. They work on-site to customize AI tools for a client and make them run. The number of FDEs is growing fast, though it started small. Waymo, a fast-growing robotaxi firm, is an example of how the job of a developer is evolving. Waymo’s cars drive themselves. But what if they break down, locking their passengers inside? Then comes the need for what he calls “the guy — or gal — in the sky”, a remote human helper who needs to understand not just the technology, but also how to handle upset passengers. Software engineers used to be sought after for their coding abilities, not their people skills. No longer. Writing code can now be done by an algorithm. “Your personality is where your value is.”
Another job is to set rules to ensure that AI agents do not bring chaos. A research group led by Cisco, a maker of networking gear, recently examined 50 IT jobs across rich countries. The fastest growing, even more so than AI programmers, was AI risk-and-governance specialists, who are typically involved in ensuring that bots do not leak data or cause a company’s operations to crash, among other things.
In charge of all these roles is the chief AI officer. Chief AI officers usually combine technical expertise with deep knowledge of a particular industry. The typical large enterprise uses as many as 11 generative-AI models, according to IBM, an IT company, and is constantly being bombarded by vendors trying to sell agents for every conceivable function. Those in charge may already feel like reaching for that killswitch.
28. Why does the author mention the “killswitch engineer” joke at the beginning of the passage?
A. To prove OpenAI needs such engineers urgently.
B. To show people’s widespread concern about potential risks of AI.
C. To argue that AI will definitely turn against humans.
D. To stress that AI will cause massive job losses soon.
29. According to Paragraph 4, what has become the key value for AI-related engineers today?
A. Strong coding abilities.
B. Rich experience in designing cars.
C. Good personality and people skills.
D. Ability to work alone without communication.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. AI development brings new jobs that require unique human skills.
B. Many traditional jobs are disappearing due to AI development.
C. AI is so dangerous that a killswitch is needed immediately.
D. Chief AI officers are responsible for stopping AI from functioning.
D
The Servant (1963) is an unforgettable film that ruthlessly explores the relationship between a cunning valet (Dirk Bogarde) and his weak-willed master (James Fox). The valet exploits his master’s weaknesses until their roles are reversed: by the end, the master humbly serves the valet. Yet today, it’s hard not to think of another troubled relationship — the one between workers and their smartphones.
Smart devices can be empowering. They provide instant access to a vast amount of information. They allow people to work from home instead of squeezing into crowded trains with strangers. This is especially helpful for parents who need flexible hours. Smartphones and tablets also improve efficiency by letting people use spare moments that would otherwise be wasted, such as while queuing for coffee.
But for most people the servant has become the master. Not long ago only doctors were on call all the time. Now everybody is. Bosses think nothing of invading their employees’ free time. Work invades the home far more than domestic chores invade the office. Otherwise—some people check their smartphones obsessively, even during pre-dinner drinks, and send e-emails first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
This is partly because smartphones are addictive. Smartphones provide relentless stimuli, stimulus interspersed with rewards. Whenever you check the glowing rectangle, there is a fair chance you will see a message from a client, a herogram from your boss or at least an e-mail from a stranger offering you $1m if you share your bank details with him.
Hyperconnectivity exaggerates some of the most destabilizing trends in the modern workplace: the decline of certainty and the general cult of flexibility. Smartphones make it easier for managers to change their minds at the last moment: for example, to e-mail a minion at 11 pm to tell him he must fly to Pittsburgh tomorrow. Employees find it ever harder to distinguish between “on-time” and “off-time” — and indeed between real work and make-work. Executives are lumbered with two overlapping workdays: a formal one full of meetings and an informal one spent trying to keep up with the torrent of e-mails and messages.
How can we reap the benefits of connectivity without becoming its slaves? One solution is digital dieting. Just as the abundance of junk food means that people have to be more disciplined about their eating habits, so the abundance of junk information means they have to be more disciplined about their browsing habits. Banning browsing before breakfast can reintroduce a little bit of civilization. Banning texting at weekends or, say, on Thursdays, can really show the iPhone who is boss.
In “Sleeping with Your Smartphone”, Leslie Perlow argues that for most people the only way to break the 24/7 habit is to act collectively rather than individually. She tells the story of how one of the world’s most hard-working organizations, the Boston Consulting Group, learned to manage hyperconnectivity better. The firm introduced rules about when people were expected to be offline, and encouraged them to work together to make this possible. It eventually forced people to work more productively while reducing burnout.
31. In the opening paragraph, the author introduces his topic by ______.
A. posing a contrast B. justifying reversed roles
C. making a comparison D. explaining a film named “servant”
32. According to paragraph 5, which of the following is a consequence of hyperconnectivity in the workplace?
A. Employees have fewer meetings during the formal workday.
B. Managers find it harder to change plans at the last minute.
C. Workers can clearly separate “on-time” from “off-time”.
D. Executives face meetings and constant messages.
33. What solutions to hyperconnectivity does the author present?
A. Banning browsing and texting.
B. Individual digital dieting and collective action with shared offline rules.
C. Acting collectively and forcing people to work more productively.
D. Working more productively and reducing burnout.
34. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. When Smartphones Become the Master of Humans.
B. Advantages and Disadvantages of Smart Devices.
C. How to Break Away From Hyperconnectivity.
D. The Film The Servant and Its Social Influence.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less
People often assume that the more choices they have, the happier and more satisfied they will be. In modern society, we are surrounded by an endless number of decisions, from small daily choices such as food and clothes to important life decisions such as education and careers. ____35____
However, psychologist Barry Schwartz introduced the idea of “the paradox of choice,” which suggests that too many choices can actually lead to stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. ____36____ They may worry about making the wrong choice or missing out on better opportunities. This mental pressure is known as “choice overload”.
____37____ Even when people choose something they like, they may continue to wonder whether another option would have been better. This feeling of doubt prevents them from fully enjoying their choice and often leads to regret.
Furthermore, too many choices can make people set unreasonably high standards. ____38____ In contrast, having fewer choices allows people to make decisions more easily and feel more confident about their final choice.
To avoid the negative effects of too many choices, experts suggest limiting options and focusing on personal needs rather than searching for perfection. ____39____ Understanding the paradox of choice helps people make calmer, clearer, and happier decisions in daily life.
A. They begin to expect perfect results, and when reality falls short, they feel disappointed.
B. Making wise decisions is essential for a happy and fulfilling life.
C. By accepting that “good enough” is often sufficient, people can reduce stress and feel more satisfied with their decisions.
D. Many people believe that having more options increases freedom and improves the quality of decisions.
E. People tend to spend too much time comparing different choices.
F. Too many choices also reduce satisfaction after a decision is made.
G. When people are faced with too many options, they often struggle to make a decision.

In the early 1990s, Holly Deiaco-Smith, a 19-year-old girl, boarded a plane to France, where she would spend a year studying abroad.
Within a few weeks of arriving in France, though, her excitement turned into an overwhelming sense of isolation and loneliness. Navigating day-to-day life in a new country was much harder than she expected it to be, especially when it came to speaking French.
Constantly fighting to be understood was emotionally exhausting. The only thing getting her through was the knowledge that a little piece of home was on the way.
“My mom had sent me Skippy peanut butter, which, at that point, I could not find anywhere in France. So this was really exciting for me.” Deiaco-Smith recalled.
Deiaco-Smith had to go to the post office to pick up the package. When she arrived, she tried to tell the attendant why she was there. But the attendant didn’t speak any English and couldn’t understand Deiaco-Smith’s accent when she spoke in French.
“The more I repeated myself, the more frustrated I got and the more hopeless I felt. I was about ready to break down in tears, when in walked my unsung hero.”
The person who came to Deiaco-Smith’s rescue was a French woman named Chantal Jouve.
“She stepped in and she looked at me and said, in English, ‘Can I help you?’ And she spoke to the attendant, and within two minutes, the package was in my hands.”
After helping her get the package, Jouve invited Deiaco-Smith to her house for dinner the following Sunday.
“It became a regular thing every Sunday to have dinner with her and her family. I really felt like I was at home there.”
Decades later, Deiaco-Smith and Jouve are still in touch. They exchange cards every Christmas and have visited each other’s families.
“To this day, her act of kindness has influenced my life in many ways,” Deiaco-Smith said. “I tend to pay attention a little bit more for people who might need help. And I’m forever grateful that Madame Jouve did that for me.”

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A

【答案】31. C 32. D 33. B 34. A

【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m glad to know you’re planning an activity themed “Connection” to ease interpersonal alienation in the AI era. I’d like to offer two practical suggestions.
First, organize a “Heart-to-Heart Sharing Session”. This session allows students to sit face-to-face, share daily troubles, study pressure and interesting stories, helping them listen patiently and understand each other, thus narrowing the distance between peers.
Besides, hold cooperative team games. Tasks like group puzzles require close communication and cooperation without electronic devices. Working together helps them break the ice quickly, build trust and strengthen bonds in a relaxed way.
These activities fit the “Connection” theme well and can solve the alienation problem. I hope my suggestions are helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
