My father was the kind of guy who could walk into a room full of strangers and leave with new best friends for life! He was a hard worker and was known as “Mr Fix-It” to everyone. He was also one of the most cheerful, affable (和葛可亲的) and gentle people you would ever meet, which made us, his beloved daughters feel proud.
But when Dad was in his fifties, my family began to notice him struggling. His work and skills began to become worse and worse, and he became depressed and withdrawn. This was not the man I knew. At the age of fifty-eight, Dad was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. As for our family, it was the worst.
Our first step was to attend a meeting hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association to learn more about the disease and programs that might help us. That meeting inspired me to start a Walk to End Alzheimer’s® team. But I still wanted to do more. In 2017, I became a board member of the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter.
The loss from this disease is gradual. My father’s decline continued for several years. Losing my father more and more each day was leaving a big hole in my heart and my life. I decided to fill that hole with action to honor my father.
That’s why I recently decided to leave a gift to the Alzheimer’s Association by naming it as a beneficiary of my retirement plan. My future gift will provide money to support research because I don’t want another person in my family or someone in other families to have to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.
I am so proud to be able to honor my father and other family members who lost their fights to Alzheimer’s in this way. My dad was an inspiration to me, and I hope, through my gift, I can inspire others to join in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.
24. What can we infer about the author’s father before having Alzheimer’s?
A. He was an outgoing man. B. He hiked with strangers.

A. She consulted many experts. B. She established a research team.
C. She gained more relevant information. D. She funded the Alzheimer’s Association.
26. What gift does the author leave to the Alzheimer’s Association?
A. Research funds for the disease. B. A record of her father’s mental state.
C. Her research papers on families like hers. D. Experts’ suggestions on her father’s disease.
27. What does the author focus on in the last paragraph?
A. Her precious gift. B. Her father’s firm confidence.
C. Her future expectation. D. Her father’s original motivation.

A group of students are aiming to become the first non-government, non-commercial team to send a rocket to space. The team’s Aurora rocket, set to launch (发射) from California this month, is designed to reach a top speed of Mach 5.2 and break through Earth’s atmosphere. If successful, it will be the second student-led team to reach space, and the first to do it with a reusable rocket.
The Karman Space Programme (KSP) was founded by students. They designed the craft, which consists of two separate stages, each with its own engine fuelled by liquid oxygen and ethanol (乙醇). Each stage will fire for just over 20 seconds, and the rocket will be travelling at 5,522 kilometres per hour at its fastest speed. About 100 seconds after launch, it will reach its highest point and then should begin falling back to Earth for a soft landing by parachute. KSP’s chairman, Shapol M., says the KSP task will use multi-stage liquid engines like commercial launchers, recover all sections of the rocket and could, in theory, be turned around for a second launch within 24 hours.
The team is planning to launch Aurora from a site in the Mojave Desert in California on September 24th. “Launching outside England is a huge pain, but there isn’t a place right now to launch up to these altitudes (海拔高度) in England. It’s a real shame,” says Shapol.
Shapol says it is hard to predict what will happen at launch, but preparations have included tests of many components. The team’s previous rockets include Vega, powered by the same engine as Aurora’s second stage. “We’ve tried to fail as much as possible before, so that we don’t fail on the big one,” says Shapol.
28. What’s special about Aurora rocket?
A. It can be recycled. B. It is the fastest in the world.
C. It is quite profitable. D. It belongs to the government.
29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The challenge in rocket design. B. The KSP’s new task.
C. The expected process of the launch. D. The first students space shot.
30. What can we learn from Shapol’s words in Paragraph 3?
A. Failing to launch the rocket is a shame.
B. It is rather difficult to launch the rocket.
C. Launching outside England is unacceptable.
D. There’s no suitable site for this launch in England.
31. What’s Shapol’s attitude to the launch?
A. Uncaring. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

Laughter comes in many forms, from a polite and quiet laugh to a great hearty laugh. Scientists are now developing an AI system to recreate different laughs in proper social contexts. The team behind the laughing robot Erica said that the system could improve natural conversations between people and an AI robot. “We think that one of the important functions of conversational AI is empathy (共情),” said Dr Koji Inoue, the lead author of the research. “So we decided that one way a robot can empathize with its users is to share their laughter.”
The team have set out to teach their AI system the art of conversational laughter. They gathered training data from more than 80 daily dialogues between male subjects and the robot that was initially operated by four actresses remotely. The dialogue data was grouped into social laughs (where polite or embarrassed laughter isn’t involved) and laughter of joy. Based on the audio files, the algorithm (算法) learned the basic characteristics of social laughs, which tend to be softer, and merry laughs, with the aim of mirroring these inappropriate situations.
“Our biggest obstructor in the work was identifying the actual cases of shared laughter because as you know, most laughter is actually not shared at all,” said Inoue. “We had to carefully decide exactly which laughs we could use for our analysis and we couldn’t just assume that any laugh can be responded to. It was really not easy work.” The team said laughter could help create robots with their own distinct character although it could take more than 20 years before it would be possible to have a casual chat with a robot like we would with a friend.
“One of the things we’d keep in mind is that a laughing robot or algorithm will never be able to understand you or the meaning of laughter,” points out Prof. Sandra Wachter of the Oxford Internet Institute. “But with their development, they might get very good at tricking you into believing they understand what’s going on.”
32. Why did Inoue’s team develop the AI system?
A. To better understand human empathy.
B. To promote the social skills of robots.
C. To explore the differences between laughs.
D. To assist robots in identifying people's moods.
33. What can robot Erica probably do at present?
A. Repeat the details of the 80 dialogues
B. Distinguish people by hearing their laughs
C. Recreate a scene played by the four actresses
D. Master the features of laughs provided by data.
34. What does the underlined word “obstructor” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Potential. B. Barrier. C. Alternative. D. Division.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Are AI systems going beyond human ability?
B. Can conversational AI really understand us?
C. Laughing robots are round the conner.
D. Robots become laughing masters.

Today was my first day of high school. I was excited but a little bit worried. I woke up early and rushed out of the door in my eagerness to know my new school. The campus was still quiet when I arrived, so I decided to explore a bit. It was so big that I was afraid I might get lost. I didn’t know anyone, and I felt lonely.
I know that teenagers should wear the right clothes to be popular. But I’m not sure which are the right clothes and which are the wrong clothes. I saw a girl in the hall who looked very cool, and she was talking to a group of kids. She was wearing the same jeans as I was, which made me feel good about my clothes. I felt more confident. I looked at my timetable to see what my first class was.
My first class was math. I really like math. I went into the classroom and sat down at a desk in the second row right near the door. And the girl named Pat sitting behind me was the very girl I had met earlier, who left a deep impression on me. She was very friendly. She was also very forgetful. She forgot her pen, so she borrowed mine. She forgot her paper, so I gave her a sheet of paper. The one thing she didn’t forget was my name. We felt like friends already!
I left math class and began looking for the science classroom, Room 211. I looked and looked, but I couldn’t find the stairs. I was worried that I would be late for class. It would be terrible to be late for my first science class because we all heard that our science teacher Mr. Robert was a serious teacher. I hurried down the hall and finally saw the stairs. I ran quickly up the stairs. Suddenly, I tripped (绊倒) and my papers fell from my hands and all of my papers went flying. I was so embarrassed and became extremely anxious.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】one possible version:
Just then, Pat came up the stairs with two of her friends. Seeing my clumsy attempt to collect my scattered papers on the ground, they instantly rushed over and joined me without any hesitation. All my items were gathered within minutes. With their sincere kindness and timely help, I felt relaxed and delighted. Having expressed my thanks to them, we headed happily for Room 211 together. However, the dead silence outside of the classroom made us aware that we were late for class.
Entering the classroom, I found everyone in total silence and an embarrassing atmosphere around us. It was Mr Robert’s stern gaze that made everyone too nervous to speak. “Sorry, Mr. Robert! It is my fault to cause us to be late!” I tried to explain with my heart pounding wildly. To our surprise, he just smiled and began his class! With what seemed seconds going by, there went the bell. I had to admit I was completely absorbed in his class. What an unforgettable experience, and I bet my life here will be a thrilling and precious adventure.

He was completely focused on his task and didn't look up at anyone passing by. We kept noticing him and wondered what he could be doing. I thought he was crushing stones to make sand, but why would he do that? Finally, we spoke to him. He was breaking the left over bread into pieces. He wanted to make feed for the birds that came here every morning. The large pieces of indian bread would be difficult for the birds to eat, so he crushed them into a fine powder every night. After reaching his apartment from his job as a designer, he collected left over bread from his roommates. Then he spent two hours crushing each peace and making a new pile for the birds. He also added some fresh water and rice, which he bought at the supermarket with his own salary. When we asked him why he did that, he shrugged his shoulders and said, it's just a little business. I can keep the left over bread from going into the trash cans, and the birds can get food.
