The centuries-old martial art of tai chi is shown to have many health benefits-including
improving balance, reducing anxiety and preventing cardiovascular()disease.But these
aren't the only benefits this exercise may have.A recently published study has demonstrated for
the first time that tai chi can reduce the severity of Parkinson's symptoms(帕金森症)in the
long-term.
To conduct their study, the researchers recruited (patients who had sporadic
Parkinson's disease.This is a type of Parkinson's disease that's not inherited()from a family
member. They focused on sporadic Parkinson's disease so that they could examine the benefits of
tai chi only on Parkinson's symptoms. The researchers excluded people with other health
conditions which may have prevented them from taking part in tai chi classes.
Participants were then divided into two groups. One is a control group of 187 people who did
not exercise, and the other is a group of 143 people who completed tai chi classes.Participants had
an average age of 66 years. There were an equal number of male and female participants.
Participants in the tai chi group were given five classes over the duration of the study which
started in 2016 and ended in 2018.They were also instructed to train twice a week for one hour.
All participants were then followed up over a three-year period between 2019 and 2021 to track
their symptoms.
The participants in the tai chi group had better motor function at the end of the study. The
control group,on the other hand, experienced a faster decline of their motor functions. The
positive effects of tai chi were also apparent in non-motor symptoms, with the tai chi group

The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network found that over 19%of the world's coral reefs
are dead due to factors such as the rise of ocean temperature causing an epidemic of coral
bleaching(变白)across the world.
Underwater robots may be a key in helping us understand coral reef systems.Underwater
robots were recently developed by researchers at the University of California. This new tool can
offer a new way to study ocean currents as well as the creatures that are in the ocean.Right now
the goal of these underwater robots is to use them to help answer questions about the most
abundant form of life in the ocean:plankton(浮游生物).
The researchers have designed and built these underwater explorers to study small scale
environmental processes that are taking place in the ocean. These robots include probes()
that are equipped with temperature and other sensors to measure ocean conditions by swimming
up and down or by maintaining a constant depth. These small robots could potentially be used in
the hundreds to thousands to capture a multi-dimensional view of the interactions between the
physical ocean and marine life.
During a study using these robots, scientists wanted to test theories behind how plankton
form dense patchest(密集区域)under the ocean surface, which then later leads them to rise to the
surface as red tides. These robots were the perfect way to mimic()the underwater swimming
behavior of plankton and examine the organisms'movements with the ocean currents.
This is the first time that a mechanism like this has ever been tested underwater. The biggest
advancement is that these small robots are made inexpensively and are able to be tracked
continuously underwater. What this means is that these robots could potentially be used as a
small army and be deployed in a swarm().This swarm-sensing approach opens up a new
world of ocean exploration. These small, low cost robots with cameras would allow for the
photographic mapping of things such as corals. This technique could be huge in identifying the
problem as well as seeing the effects of coral bleaching in almost real time.
32.What is the main cause of coral reef damage according to the article?
A.Red tides.
B.Marine life.
C.Ocean currents.
D.Ocean warming.
33.What is the main advantage of the underwater robots mentioned in the article?
【高二英语试卷·第5页(共8页)】
A.They are the first ever mechanism for studying the ocean.
B.They are equipped with cameras for photographic mapping.
C.They are capable of swimming up and down in the ocean.
D.They are cost-effective and capable of constant monitoring.
34.How do the underwater robots help scientists study plankton behavior?
A.By imitating the swimming behavior of plankton.
B.By capturing a multi-dimensional view of marine life.
C.By measuring ocean conditions with temperature sensors.
D.By tracking dense patches of plankton under the ocean surface.
35.What is the author's attitude towards the underwater robots?
A.Skeptical.
B.Objective.
C.Optimistic.
D.Negative.

Around the world, countless children face challenging situations on a daily basis. In a recent
incident in Texas,a 7-year-old boy named Preston Bell found himself in a distressing situation
that could have had a tragic outcome.Fortunately, his school bus driver,Raquel, emerged as a
hero through her quick thinking and life-saving actions.
Raquel, the school bus driver for the Dallas Independent School District, was responsible for
the Seagoville route on September 29th.Though her focus was always on the safety and
well-being of her young passengers,Raquel knew that her responsibilities extended far beyond
just driving the bus.The genuine connection she had built with these children meant that their
safety was of the utmost importance to her.
As she embarked on her daily journey,a sense of excitement filled the air.The school bus
buzzed with the vibrant energy of the students, each one eager to greet the day with their unique
personalities.
Amidst the lively chatter and laughter,Raquel's keen eye quickly caught onto a slight
shifting of behavior just a few seats behind her.The once loud voices seemed to hush, and a sense
of unease began to fill the atmosphere.Raquel's instincts, sharpened by years of experience,
kicked into high gear as she sensed that something was wrong.
As it turned out, young Preston had accidentally placed a quarter in his mouth, unknowingly
creating a dangerous choking situation.Initially, she believed he was feeling unwell and about to
vomit,so she opened the bus door, instructing him to lean and throw out.
However,as the situation unfolded,Raquel realized that Preston was unable to breathe
normally, increasing the urgency of the moment.Being a professional driver trained in first aid and
CPR,she immediately sprang into action, with every move captured by the bus's surveillance(

Paragraph 1:
Raquel swiftly rose from her seat. She got off the bus and lifted Preston, quickly
making her way down the stairs.Along the path to the sidewalk, she promptly
performed the Heimlich maneuver, all the while reassuring him with words of
encouragement: “Hold on, baby, I've got you.” Raquel's physical training and
composure allowed her to demonstrate exceptional skills and confidence in a time of
crisis.Recognizing the gravity of the situation,Raquel also sought the help of a nearby
parent to call 911 for emergency assistance.
Paragraph 2:
Raquel went on giving Preston first aid. After a few tense moments, her skilled
application of the Heimlich maneuver proved effective, removing the quarter from
Preston's airway. As the coin flew out, relief washed over the young boy's face,
replacing the fear he had felt just moments ago.Breathless but grateful, Preston
managed to express his heartfelt appreciation to Raquel, vowing to learn from this
experience and avoid any potential dangers in the future.

Text 10
A good memory is a great help in learning a language.Everybody learns his own
language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child and some children,
like boys and girls who live abroad with their parents, seem to learn two languages
almost as easily as one.At school it isn't easy to learn a foreign language well because
the pupils don't have a very good language environment and they have so little time
for it.They are busy with other subjects, too.
A man's mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see
but also of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a
camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to show to our
friends. In the same way, there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture
forever in our mind.
Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.
