Have you ever tried to hold back laughter in a serious class or meeting, only to find it harder to stop? Many of us have such experiences, and we often feel ashamed about them. But science tells us that this is not our fault—there are clear scientific reasons why controlling laughter is so difficult.
First of all, laughter is mainly driven by our brain, and not all parts of the brain are under our conscious (有意识的) control. Scientists have found that there are two types of laughter. One is voluntary (有意的) laughter, which we choose to make, such as laughing politely at a friend’s joke. The other is involuntary laughter, which is caused by the emotional (情绪的) parts of our brain, like the amygdala (杏仁核). These parts work by themselves, so involuntary laughter often starts before we can even think about stopping it.
Secondly, laughter can help us reduce worries. When we are in a serious or stressful situation, our body builds up worries. Laughter becomes a natural way to let it out. The more we try to stop it, the more worries we will have, which makes the laughter even harder to control. For example, when our classmates laugh in class, their laughter will influence us, and we can’t help joining in even though we know we should be quiet.
Besides, the brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) controls our social awareness and behavior, but it cannot fully stop laughter. This part of the brain tries to control our emotions in serious situations, but it cannot stop the emotional signals from the limbic (边缘的) system, which controls our feelings. As a result, even if we tell ourselves “don’t laugh”, our brain still sends signals to make us laugh.
In conclusion, controlling laughter is hard because it is a natural reaction of our brain and body. It is not a sign of rudeness, but a normal emotional response. Next time you can’t hold back laughter, don’t feel ashamed—remember it’s just science at work. Laughter is a gift that makes our life happier, and it’s okay to let it out sometimes.
34.How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By comparing ideas. B.By giving examples.

Emma finished playing a song and looked up at her piano teacher.
“You played that very well,” Ms. Green said, “How about joining some of the other students and playing at the school performance this Saturday afternoon?”
“I can’t,” Emma said quickly.
“Lots of kids are shy,” Ms. Green said, “But the best way to overcome your fear is by doing what scares you. Remember, our school recital is going to be right after this event. Playing at the school performance this weekend would be great practice.”
“I’m sorry. I can’t be there,” Emma went on. “My grandmother invited my family to a party at her retirement community that afternoon.”
Emma didn’t add that she was relaxed to have an excuse not to have to play at the school performance. The thought of playing the piano with so many people around made her nervous.
On Saturday morning, as Emma helped her parents wrap gifts for grandma, she thought about her friends playing the piano at the school performance. Some of them would take breaks from their activities to watch the piano players. “I’m so glad I won’t be there,” she thought.
With gifts for grandma, Emma and her parents arrived at the retirement community. They greeted grandma with hugs and warm wishes. Mrs. Rossi, the activity director, showed a short video. Then they played games, and the residents opened their gifts.
“We usually end with singing songs together,” Mrs. Rossi said. “But our piano player isn’t able to make it today.”
“Emma plays the piano,” grandma said with pride.
“Wonderful,” Mrs. Rossi said. She turned to Emma. “Emma, would you like to play while we sing? It would be such a help.”
Emma looked around the room. How could she ever find the courage to play here? This would be worse than playing at the school performance. At least there, people would be distracted by other activities. But here, everyone was sitting in a big circle facing the piano.
Emma was about to say she couldn’t do it. Then she saw the smiles on all the faces as they looked eagerly toward her. She remembered Ms. Green saying that the best way to overcome the fear was just to do it. Emma took a deep breath and walked to the piano.
She began to play and performed a whole song without making a mistake. A warm feeling chased away the butterflies in her stomach. Ms. Green was right. Emma just had to do it. And she did!
38.Why did Emma refuse Ms. Green’s invitation at first?

e. Emma was glad to have an excuse to avoid the school show.
A.a-c-e-d-b B.c-a-e-d-b C.a-e-c-d-b D.a-c-e-b-d

B.Emma’s nervousness disappeared and she became relaxed.
C.Emma was still shy but tried to hide her feelings from others.
D.Emma was excited about the success and wanted to play more.
41.What can we learn from Emma’s experience?

Automated (自动化的) kitchens aren’t sci-fi scenes from shows like Star Trek. Right now, robots are used to fry chicken, make pizzas, prepare salads and many more. AI can invent recipes(食谱) based on what a kitchen has. More modern ideas are in development to automate kitchens for fine dining.
Since technology is possibly expensive at first, restaurants and other businesses are the first ones to use AI kitchen technologies. Over time, prices are likely to fall enough for the home market, changing how homes and society work.
The benefits of AI kitchens include helping cooks to avoid boring tasks such as peeling potatoes or standing at a workstation for hours. It can free up time, allowing people to focus on more important tasks. For personalized eating, AI can fit countless special diets and tastes to meet needs.
However, there are risks to humans happiness. Cooking is a good activity that helps with communication and self-expression, but these benefits (益处) could be reduced if the human involvement(参与) becomes unnecessary. Family relationships might be influenced without the teamwork in the kitchen.
Moreover, the kitchen acts as the household’s science laboratory, playing an important role in science education. The art of cooking helps kids learn about materials, chemistry and problem-solving.
Cultural risks must also be considered. For example, AI could mess up traditional recipes and methods, as it often oversimplifies (过度简化) cultural details. This may result in AI and robot cooks producing fewer kinds of dishes. Depending too heavily on technology in meal creation may result in a shortage of diversity (多样性), resulting in a sameness in taste, similar to the strange feel of AI art images across different apps.
Convenience can come at a great cost, so it’s important to consider the possible social disruptions (扰乱) that new technologies might bring, especially in areas like food that are closely tied to our everyday lives.
42.Why are restaurants the first to use AI kitchen technologies?
A.They are more interested in automation. B.They can pay the high costs.
C.They have more space for robots. D.They want to attract more customers.
43.Which of the following risks of AI cooking to humans is NOT mentioned (提及)?
A.Family relationship might be affected.
B.Kids can’t learn about science in the kitchen.
C.There will be not so many kinds of dishes.
D.The AI art images in different apps have a strange feel.
44.How could AI possibly harm cultural diversity in food?
A.By taking the place of human cooks. B.By encouraging home cooking.
C.By focusing personalized eating. D.By oversimplifying traditional recipes.
45.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) toward the widespread use of AI kitchens?
A.Positive. B.Negative (消极的). C.Cautious. (谨慎的) D.Unclear.

A.everything B.nothing C.something D.anything
4.—Jack, I haven’t seen your sister for a long time.
—She ________ Hong Kong on business for a few days.
A.went to B.has gone to C.has been to D.has been in
went to去了,一般过去时;has gone to已经去了某地,现在完成时;has been to曾经去过某地,现在已经回来,现在完成时;has been in一直待在某地,现在完成时。

C.The number of; four fifths D.A number of; four fifths
a number of“许多”;the number of“……的数量”。根据“... the teachers in the school is one hundred”可知,第一空表示学校的教师人数是一百人,应用the number of;分数的表达:分子用基数词,分母用序数词,当分子大于1时,分母用序数词的复数形式,因此“五分之四”的表达为four fifths。故选C。

A.very carelessly B.more carefully
C.the most carefully D.more carelessly

A.canceled B.is canceled C.was canceled D.will be canceled
【答案】D

C.By asking questions. D.By listing numbers.
35.What is laughter mainly driven by?
A.Medicine. B.The brain. C.Scientists. D.The society.
36.What will happen when we are in a stressful situation?
A.We laugh politely. B.Our classmates will laugh.
C.We tell ourselves “don’t laugh”. D.Our body builds up worries.
37.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

36.第三段第二句指出:“When we are in a serious or stressful situation, our body builds up worries.”

A.She was too nervous to play in front of people.
B.She had never played the piano in public before.
C.She didn’t think she played the piano well enough.
D.She didn’t have time because of her grandma’s party.
39.Which of the following is the correct order of the story?

b. Emma played the piano perfectly for the elderly.

A.Emma felt proud of her performance and smiled happily.
B.Emma’s nervousness disappeared and she became relaxed.
C.Emma was still shy but tried to hide her feelings from others.
D.Emma was excited about the success and wanted to play more.
41.What can we learn from Emma’s experience?
A.It’s easy to get used to new environments quickly.

根据第二段“Since technology is possibly expensive at first, restaurants and other businesses are the first ones to use AI kitchen technologies.”
43.根据文章内容,文中明确提到的AI烹饪风险包括:①家庭关系可能受影响(对应A选项,第四段提到“Family relationships might be influenced without the teamwork in the kitchen”);②菜肴种类可能减少(对应C选项,第五段提到“This may result in AI and robot cooks producing fewer kinds of dishes”)。
44.根据第五段“AI could mess up traditional recipes and methods, as it often oversimplifies cultural details. This may result in AI and robot cooks producing fewer kinds of dishes. Depending too heavily on technology in meal creation may result in a shortage of diversity...”
45.根据最后一段“Convenience can come at a great cost, so it’s important to consider the possible social disruptions that new technologies might bring, especially in areas like food that are closely tied to our everyday lives.”

Tom, Huck and Joe decided to run away from the town and become pirates (海盗), never to return. They left at midnight on a raft (筏) and finally landed on an island five kilometers south of their town. They took the old sail from the raft and made a tent. Then they let the raft go down the river.
They built a fire and cooked some stolen food to eat, talking about the life of pirates.
Slowly, they felt sleepy. Huck slept easily. Tom and Joe had more difficulty getting to sleep. Their consciences (良心) started to work. They began to fear that it was wrong to run away and worried that it was bad to steal.
After they woke up the next morning, they played in the shallow, clear water. Then they caught some small fish and cooked these for breakfast.
Later they went to explore the woods. When they got hungry, they went back to their camp, ate lots of cold ham, and then lay down in the shade to talk. They thought the new life was free and interesting.
Suddenly, the boys heard a strange noise in the distance. Soon this sound became louder.
“What is it?” asked Joe.
“It isn’t thunder,” said Huck. “Let’s go and see.”
They hurried to the shore (岸). A little ferry (渡船) full of people was about a kilometer below the village. There were lots of rowing boats moving around near the ferry. The boys couldn’t understand what they were doing. Some white steam (蒸汽) came from the ferry’s side and they heard that same sound again.
“I know,” cried Tom. “Someone’s drowned (溺死)! They are searching for the dead body.”
“That’s it,” said Huck. “They did this last summer when Bill Turner drowned. They send out some white steam over the water and that makes the body come to the top.”
“I wonder who drowned,” said Huck.
“It is us,” said Tom.
