There are decisions we take on instinct (本能), without even realizing we are taking them.
Two years ago, I left Germany to do volunteering work. I had a couple of disappointing experiences and a boring job in front of me. It was time to go. I found an interesting contact in a small village in Portugal. In exchange for room and board, I would be working with animals in a residence that hosted families with disabled people. And there I went, with just a backpack I was ready to jump into a new adventure.
There, I cared for the pets living next to the residents, cleaning their yard, preparing food and caring for them. Within a month I was in charge of all the other volunteers and the organization of the daily work. After 5 months, I left again and moved to Catalonia, in Spain, to live with an Irish family. They offered a roof and food on the passage of their house for abandoned animals I helped care for.
During both experiences, I had the chance to discover beautiful little towns and lovely villages. In Portugal, I walked on the coastline and explored those little towns on the top of the dry hills. In Spain I visited Barcelona multiple times, discovering little by little all its corners. Sometimes, my volunteering experience was challenging. I didn’t speak any Portuguese and only a bit of Spanish. But life out there was simple. It was so different from what I used to call “home” before! Going back to previous habits took me time.
If you’re wondering if an international volunteering year gap is worth it, despite the uncertain future and the social pressure, I say: go for it. Believe me, in various ways, you will be sure to return transformed, perhaps even improved to a better self. With a bit of luck, you may also discover a new career path.
4. Why did the author choose to leave Germany to do volunteering work?
A. To make a change. B. To gain living skills.
C. To broaden his views. D. To add working experience.
5. What did the author mainly do during his trip?
A. Running an organization. B. Attending to animals.
C. Taking care of the disabled. D. Preparing food for volunteers.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author’s trip?
A. Simple. B. Romantic. C. Adventurous. D. Rewarding.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experiences?
A. Instinct is a key step for new career.
B. Backpacking brings us new adventures.
C. A gap year helps us escape from reality.
D. Volunteering is a journey of self-discovery.
C
Few things delight children, or irritate their parents, as much as screen time. But the worry may be focused on the wrong age group. Now a new generation of grandparents are adding to their screen time with smartphones, iPads and game consoles, with screen sessions taking up more than half of their waking hours.
The digitization of old age is a good thing. Facebook and WhatsApp bring daily updates from old friends and faraway grandchildren. Zoom transports church, book clubs and doctors’ appointments into the home. Older people are also insulated from some on-screen risks — they have already formed their key real-life relationships, so are less likely to suffer the “social stunting” that screen-obsessed children supposedly face.
Yet as retirement moves online, there are costs that society must address. Older folks’ devices are usually connected to credit cards. Door-to-door scams can now go iPad-to-iPad. Older people also appear more likely to be susceptible to online scams, which artificial intelligence promises to make still more convincing. As older generations shift from watching Fox or the BBC to scrolling on YouTube or TikTok, they are entering a Wild West of information.
Screen time has a mixed impact on loneliness. Screens are companions for the isolated, but they can also replace real-life interactions. E-commerce removes the trouble of weekly shopping trips — yet also the social encounters that come with them. Balancing these trade-offs is easier for teenagers, whose online time is limited by teachers and parents. Older folks lack such informal mediators.
Universal use of smartphones and social media should make it easier to have sensible conversations about these trade-offs. And when children are told for the hundredth time to get off their phones, they can cast a meaningful glance at grandpa in the corner, chuckling at the latest memes on WhatsApp.
8. By mentioning the screen habits of both children and grandparents, the author intends to ________.
A. highlight an overlooked issue B. evaluate an existing policy
C. clarify a long-standing goal D. illustrate a research method
9. What does the underlined phrase “susceptible to” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. Tolerant to. B. Awakened by. C. Easily affected by. D. Unaware of.
10. What can be inferred from the passage about teenagers compared with seniors?
A. Teenagers face greater risks from online scams.
B. Teenagers spend more waking hours on screens than seniors.
C. Teenagers have more informal controls over their screen time.
D. Teenagers benefit more from digitization than seniors do.
11. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Square-Eyed Elders: The Rising Digital Generation.
B. Screen Time Crisis: A Teenage Problem After All.
C. The Wild West of Information: Scams and Security.
D. Social Stunting: Why Screens Harm Children Most.
D
As climate change intensifies, tropical rainforests such as the Amazon are under increasing threat. Deforestation has led to the loss of about 12% of the Amazon’s original forest cover, releasing millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In response, a Brazilian startup called Re.green has set up an ambitious project: restoring native forests using a combination of artificial intelligence and drones.
Re.green was founded in 2021, focusing on large-scale forest restoration. The company has since received support from the Earthshot Prize, a global environmental award established by Prince William. The startup uses AI to analyze satellite pictures and identify which areas have the highest potential for natural regeneration, and which require active planting. Once the analysis is complete, drones take over. These drones can scatter millions of seeds across hard-to-reach areas, cutting the cost of planting by as much as 90% compared to traditional methods, while also saving significant amounts of human labor.
Instead of planting a single species, Re.green recreates the complex biodiversity of the original forest. The company selects over 70 different native tree species for each restoration area. In the meantime, Re.green doesn’t rely on donations or government funding. Instead, it sells carbon credits to large companies — each credit representing one ton of carbon dioxide that the restored forest will absorb. This innovative “forest-as-a-service” model provides a continuous financial stream to scale up operations without eating into public budgets.
By 2025, Re.green had already restored over 1,800 hectares of rainforest and planted more than 1.5 million trees. The company aims to reach one million hectares restored by 2050. Though challenges remain, from monitoring long-term growth to ensuring the survival of planted trees, the project shows how clever combinations of advanced technology and environmental goals can work hand in hand to produce real, measurable changes for the planet.
12. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To advertise the Earthshot Prize.
B. To present the problem and lead to a solution.
C. To discuss the causes of global warming.
D. To explain how satellites are used in forestry.
13. According to the passage, how does Re.green ensure financial sustainability?
A. By accepting donations from wealthy individuals.
B. By relying on government subsidies for green projects.
C. By selling carbon credits to large corporations.
D. By charging landowners for restoration services.
14. What can be inferred about the forest restoration model of Re.green from the passage?
A. It relies on planting a few fast-growing species.
B. It restores forests by copying the natural biodiversity.
C. It focuses only on areas near cities for quick results.
D. It adopts a single-species approach for easier management.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward Re.green’s project?
A. Admiring. B. Skeptical. C. Neutral. D. Dismissive.

It was a typical spring morning in Hangzhou, China. The sun was barely up, and the air was still cool from the previous night’s rain. Wang Haoyu, a high school student, had planned an early morning basketball game with his friend Xiao M. The two had been looking forward to this game all week, and nothing was going to stop them from playing, not even the wet ground.
As they arrived at the basketball court, the dew on the grass glistened in the early morning light. The air was filled with the sound of chirping birds, and the scent of blooming flowers. However, the ground was still wet and slippery. Haoyu suggested they be careful as they played, and they both agreed to take extra care.
Then they started to play, the ball bouncing back and forth as they took turns to score. The game soon became more and more intense, with both Haoyu and Xiao M giving it their all. However, as the clock approached 6:45 am, something went wrong. Xiao M was attempting a difficult shot when suddenly he lost his balance and slipped on the wet surface. His body and head hit the ground hard, and he immediately became unconscious. His face went all pale.
Haoyu panicked and for a while he was unsure of what to do. Then he realized he should call for help. He shouted at the top of his lungs, “Quick, call 120! My friend has fainted!” Fortunately, a passer-by heard his cry and immediately dialed the number. As they were waiting for the ambulance, time seemed to slow down.

【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. A
【解析】

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Few things delight children, or irritate their parents, as much as screen time. But the worry may be focused on the wrong age group. Now a new generation of grandparents are adding to their screen time with smartphones, iPads and game consoles, with screen sessions taking up more than half of their waking hours.(没有什么比屏幕时间更能让儿童开心或让父母恼火的了。但这种担忧可能集中在了错误的年龄群体上。现在,新一代的祖父母正在通过智能手机、iPad和游戏机增加他们的屏幕时间,屏幕时间占据了他们清醒时间的一半以上)”可知,作者通过提及儿童和祖父母的屏幕习惯,意图强调一个被忽视的问题,即老年人的屏幕成瘾。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Older people also appear more likely to be susceptible to online scams, which artificial intelligence promises to make still more convincing.(老年人似乎也更容易susceptible to网络诈骗,人工智能有望使这些诈骗变得更加令人信服)”可知,画线短语所在句子意在表达老年人面对网络诈骗时的脆弱性。选项C“Easily affected by(容易受到……的影响)”符合语境。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Balancing these trade-offs is easier for teenagers, whose online time is limited by teachers and parents.

A. Admiring. B. Skeptical. C. Neutral. D. Dismissive.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Instead of planting a single species, Re.green recreates the complex biodiversity of the original forest.(Re.green不是种植单一物种,而是重现原始森林复杂的生物多样性)”可知,该公司的森林恢复模式是通过复制自然生物多样性来实现的。
【15题详解】

Dear Leslie,
I’m so glad to hear from you! You asked about the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important traditional festivals in China.
It usually falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is believed to be the fullest and brightest. During this festival, families gather together to enjoy a big dinner and admire the beautiful full moon. Eating mooncakes is also a must-do tradition.
Culturally, the round moon and mooncakes symbolize family reunion and harmony. It’s a wonderful time for people to express their love and missing for distant family members.
Hope you can experience it someday!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

The fear of losing his friend seized Haoyu, and he knelt beside Xiao M, checking his breathing and calling his name.

Haoyu, still trembling with lingering fear, followed the ambulance to the hospital. He paced anxiously in the corridor, praying for his friend’s safety. Fortunately, the doctor soon emerged with a reassuring smile, confirming that Xiao M had suffered a mild concussion but was out of danger. A heavy burden was finally lifted from Haoyu’s heart.
A few days later, Xiao M was discharged from the hospital with a full recovery. The two friends reunited at the same basketball court, now completely dry under the warm spring sun. Xiao M gave Haoyu a tight hug, expressing his heartfelt gratitude for being saved. Haoyu smiled, realizing that their bond had grown even stronger through this unexpected trial. They decided to take it slow this time, cherishing not only the joy of the game but also the precious gift of friendship and health.
