Some of this year’s coolest fall festivals in the US are odd. Here are the most delightfully popular ones in the US.
Trailing of the Sheep Festival
This year is the 29th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which runs from October 8-12, 2025. The festival actually involves running after sheep through the town, which occurs each year with the season change. It’s a direct callback to the area’s herding culture. Guests will have the chance to watch sheep-dog shows, shop around for woolen crafts, taste delicious treats and lamb-centric meals, and learn about the history and traditions of the town’s shepherding culture.
Sea Witch
From October 24-26, the Rehoboth Beach area comes alive with one of the country’s liveliest autumn festivals and Halloween parades. The festivities are pretty familiar, from costume contests to fair games, but there’s one star of the show that you won’t find elsewhere: the Sea Witch. According to local legend, treasure hunters flocked on a wreck (残骸) back in 1798. Some returned with stories of seeing a horrible weather witch, which tried to drown them during the hunt. In 2025, the Sea Witch is nothing more than a mascot (吉祥物) for the festivities. There’s even a Sea Witch hunt!
Greenville
Greenville is not reinventing the wheel when it comes to popular fall festivals in the US but they have one thing that others don’t. That’s a wide and diverse range of chefs, menus, and restaurants. It’s not too surprising that the city would showcase the state’s top culinary (烹饪) talents. From October 10-12, visitors can sample eats from 60 restaurants that are selling over 300 menu items. There are also over 50 beer and wine sellers, along with seven stages that will host over 80 musical performances.
1. What is the main purpose of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival?
A. To boost woolen craft sales.
B. To present lamb cooking traditions.
C. To keep the local herding culture alive.
D. To promote sheep farming in the town.
2. What can people do in the 2025 Sea Witch?
A. Explore a wreck back. B. Hunt for mascots.
C. Design a magical costume. D. Tell stories of a Sea Witch.
3. What makes Greenville different from the first two fall festivals?
A. It is held earlier than other fall festivals.
B. It offers the most kinds of beer and wine.
C. It focuses on showing excellent cooking skills.
D. It holds fantastic and colorful costume contests.

It may seem strange now, but there was a time when classical music was popular. In 1980, Simon Rattle, a young conductor from Liverpool, became the main conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He was just 25, full of energy, and very talented. He was also great at connecting with people.
I first went to classical concerts as a teenager. Rattle made the concerts exciting, and tickets were cheap. Even without any music training. One piece I heard was Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme composed by Thomas Tallis. I learned from the concert notes that it was based on music by an old English composer and this helped my appreciation of the piece.
Later, when I moved to London, I found more exciting performances. Classical music was everywhere — even on TV and in opera shows. Mahler’s music, full of strong feelings and big ideas, was very popular. Some performances were bold (大胆的), mixing classical music with other music styles and even including shocking scenes.
This was also the time when CDs became popular. Many young artists got the chance to record music. Some unexpected works became hits, like music by Hildegard of Bingen or Arvo Pärt.
I started to listen more seriously. A radio show called Building a Library (also called Radio 3) helped me understand what I was hearing. It compared different recordings and explained the meaning behind the music. I began buying CDs and reading more.
Now, however, things have changed. Radio 3, once a great source of music knowledge, now focuses on light entertainment. Shows that used to teach now try to relax listeners. The music is often repeated, and deep discussion is missing. It’s sad to see this change. I’m lucky to have learned so much from Radio 3 in the past. But now, it seems classical music is no longer treated with the respect it deserves.
4. Why does the author mention Vaughan William’s Fantasia on a Theme in paragraph 2?
A. To point out the piece’s complexity. B. To reveal the author’s music preference.
C. To praise Thomas Tallis’ artistic innovation. D. To show the author’s path to music appreciation.
5. What does the author imply about classical music in London during his time there?
A. Its popularity was on sharp decline then. B. New elements contributed to its lively presence.
C. Television was the perfect platform for promotion. D. It was characterised by conservative performances.
6. How did the radio show Building a Library influence the author?
A. It reduced his purchasing CD. B. It deepened his musical insight.
C. It entertained him with light music. D. It inspired him to seek formal training.
7. How does the author feel about Radio 3 now?
A. Confused. B. Attracted. C. Grateful. D. Regretful.
D 5. B 6. B 7. D

If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh — ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good — looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face — down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life — or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra — curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face — down generation need a heads — up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh — ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face — down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).
8. According to the passage, what is a common concern among some adults about the “face — down generation”?
A. They lack creativity and intelligence.
B. They are too focused on their phones rather than the real world.
C. They have no interest in extra — curricular activities.
D. They are unwilling to use modern technology.
9. The underlined phrase “helicopter parents” in Paragraph 3 most probably means parents who _________.
A. work as a helicopter pilot B. often travel around by helicopter
C. are overly involved in their child’s life D. encourage their child to be independent
10. What can we infer about the writer’s attitude towards the younger generation?
A. Worried and critical. B. Hopeful and positive.
C. Indifferent and neutral. D. Doubtful but curious.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Rise of Helicopter Parents
B. Challenges Facing Today’s Youth
C. The Face — Down Generation: A Reason to Be Hopeful
D. How to Deal with Teenagers’ Phone Addiction
B 9. C 10. B 11. C

根据第二段中的“Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face — down generation” because you use your phone so much(一些成年人担心你对眼前的屏幕比对周围的世界更感兴趣。他们把你称为“低头一代”,因为你太频繁地使用手机)”可知,一些成年人对“低头一代”的普遍担忧是他们过于关注手机,而不是现实世界。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra — curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them(他们总是在那里指导和帮助他们,日程安排得满满当当,有家庭作业和舞蹈、绘画或体育等课外活动。父母为他们做了所有事情)”可知,“helicopter parents”指的是过度参与孩子生活、事事为孩子包办的父母。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders.(事实上,如今的许多青少年比前几代人受教育程度更高、更有创造力。他们似乎也很热情,愿意成为领导者)” 以及第五段中的 “So if you’re one of the oh — ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future.(所以如果你是2000年后出生的人,就有理由对未来充满希望)”可推断,作者对年轻一代的态度是充满希望和积极的。
通读全文可知,文章先介绍了成年人对“低头一代”的担忧,随后反驳了这些担忧,强调这一代人的优势,并表达了对他们未来的希望,结合最后一段“So if you’re one of the oh — ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face — down generation.(所以如果你是 2000 年后出生的人,就有理由对未来充满希望。低头一代的前景正在好转)”可知,C项“低头一代:一个充满希望的理由” 最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
D
A team of researchers looked at a decade’s worth of responses to an online survey about morals and analyzed how these responses changed from one season to the next. Their findings suggest that, at a population level, people are less likely to endorse(赞成)more traditional moral values in summer and winter. The researchers relied on data from a website called YourMorals. org, which offers a “moral foundations questionnaire” where respondents can rate how strongly they agree or disagree that something is right or wrong.
The questions were based on moral foundations theory to explore why morality seems to follow similar patterns across populations from very different cultures. According to the theory, morality can be broken down into five foundational values care, fairness, loyalty, authority, and purity-and these belong to two groups: individualizing values and binding values.
The seasonal pattern in response was not evident for all types of values. For instance, individualizing values, focusing on the morality of individual rights, showed little variation over time and didn’t follow a seasonal trend. However, binding values values that prioritize the needs of one’s group, including loyalty, respect for authority, and purity of tradition--followed a biannual pattern.
To attempt to better understand the results, the researchers also looked at patterns in Google search results related to anxiety. What they found was that population-level patterns in anxiety also followed a seasonal cycle peaking in the spring and fall, which suggests a potential correlation(关联性). Spring and fall are often thought of as the most pleasant seasons, so an increase in anxiety during these times might seem unexpected. But it’s possible that increases in school and work - related changes during these times could play some role. They also suggest that anxiety might decrease in winter due to seasonal holidays, and in summer due to warmer weather and increased vegetation.
“We often think of moral values as these unchangeable principles that we hold close,” Professor Hohm says. But they’re actually subject to all kinds of influences that might pass us by unnoticed. Being aware of how that happens could help us better understand and plan for seasonal shifts.
12. Which will not follow a seasonal trend?
A. Purity of tradition. B. Loyalty to one’s party.
C. Fairness among people. D. Respect for authority.
13. Why do people feel most anxious in spring and autumn?
A. Changes in temperature. B. Increased holiday expenses.
C. Reduction in vegetable varieties D. New challenges from school and work.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Moral values are steady. B. Moral principles are changeable.
C. Moral influences may be ignored. D. Moral changes can affect plan making.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Our morals change with the seasons. B. Anxiety rises when we feel threatened.
C. Seasons influence our minds and behaviors. D. Individualizing values and binding values differ.
C 13. D 14. D 15. A
根据文章第三段“The seasonal pattern in response was not evident for all types of values. For instance, individualizing values, focusing on the morality of individual rights, showed little variation over time and didn’t follow a seasonal trend. However, binding values values that prioritize the needs of one's group, including loyalty, respect for authority, and purity of tradition--followed a biannual pattern.(对所有类型的数值而言,季节性模式的响应并不明显。例如,注重个人权利道德性的个体化价值观,在时间上几乎没有变化,也没有遵循季节趋势。然而,有约束力的价值观——优先考虑个人群体的需求,包括忠诚、尊重权威和传统的纯洁——遵循了一年两次的模式)”可知,忠诚、尊重权威和传统的纯洁都遵循了季节趋势,人与人之间的公平属于个人权利道德性个体化价值观,不遵循季节趋势。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Spring and fall are often thought of as the most pleasant seasons, so an increase in anxiety during these times might seem unexpected. But it’s possible that increases in school and work- related changes during these times could play some role.(春天和秋天通常被认为是最愉快的季节,所以在这段时间增加焦虑似乎是出乎意料的。但在这段时间里,与学校和工作相关的变化可能会起到一些作用)”可知,春秋季的焦虑来自学校和工作的新挑战。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““We often think of moral values as these unchangeable principles that we hold close,” Professor Hohm says. But they're actually subject to all kinds of influences that might pass us by unnoticed.Being aware of how that happens could help us better understand and plan for seasonal shifts.(“我们通常认为道德价值观是我们所坚守的不可改变的原则,”霍姆教授说。“但实际上,它们受到各种各样的影响,我们可能不会注意到它们。意识到这是如何发生的可以帮助我们更好地理解和计划季节变化。”)”可知,道德价值观受到各种各样的影响,道德上的改变会影响计划的制定。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“A team of researchers looked at a decade’s worth of responses to an online survey about morals and analyzed how these responses changed from one season to the next. Their findings suggest that, at a population level, people are less likely to endorse(赞成)more traditional moral values in summer and winter.(一组研究人员研究了10年来一项关于道德的在线调查的回答,并分析了这些回答在不同季节的变化。他们的研究结果表明,就总体而言,人们在夏天和冬天不太可能认同更传统的道德价值观)”及全文内容可知,本文介绍了我们的道德观念随季节而变化的影响。故选A。
In just over a month, Australia will start a social media ban (禁令). From December 10, people under 16 will only be able to see public content on platforms (平台) such as Facebook and TikTok, and they will not be allowed to have their own accounts. ____16____ But many parents worry about how teens will respond.
My research shows social and digital media use is already a major source of family conflict. Young people often pressure parents for devices or certain apps to keep in touch with their friends. So a government reason for the ban is to help parents manage this problem. ____17____
However, we still don’t know what will happen on December 10. Some experts argue young people may get around the ban, for example with apps that hide identity (身份). This calls for solutions. ____18____ Because children are different, parents should act based on family values and a child’s individuality.
Even so, if teens are used to social media and suddenly it’s gone, they may feel sad or angry, and parents will have to manage the results. Social media is not only mindless scrolling ____19____ Therefore, they will need other ways to stay in touch, and parents should help them keep friendships. Parents should also know that this change can be difficult.
____20____ So parents should explain that less time on social media can reduce endless scrolling and cyberbullying Yet the ban does not make kids 100 percent “safe” online: they may move to other spaces, and the ban covers only some platforms. So parents should keep talking about what children see and do online, help them build the ability to judge online information. Also, they need to stay interested and willing to guide their children instead of controlling everything.
A. It can help young people build connections.
B. Some safety experts and parents welcome this.
C. But there is no one right answer for every family.
D. It may be easier for them to say, “This is the law.”
E. It is sometimes hard to see eye to eye with each other.
F. Actually, young people respond better to rules when given a clear reason.
G. This is eating away at the close relationship between parents and children.

根据前文“In just over a month, Australia will start a social media ban (禁令). From December 10, people under 16 will only be able to see public content on platforms (平台) such as Facebook and TikTok, and they will not be allowed to have their own accounts. (再过一个多月,澳大利亚将开始实施社交媒体禁令。从12月10日起,16岁以下的青少年只能在脸书、抖音等平台查看公共内容,且不允许拥有个人账号。)”以及后文“But many parents worry about how teens will respond. (但许多家长担心青少年会作何反应。)”中的But可知,此空应说明有部分群体对该禁令持支持态度,与后文家长的担忧形成转折,B选项“Some safety experts and parents welcome this. (一些安全专家和家长对此表示欢迎。)”体现了对禁令的正面态度,与后文的转折关系衔接自然,符合语境。故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“My research shows social and digital media use is already a major source of family conflict. Young people often pressure parents for devices or certain apps to keep in touch with their friends. So a government reason for the ban is to help parents manage this problem. (我的研究表明,使用社交和数字媒体已经成为家庭冲突的主要根源。年轻人常常向父母施压,要求配备电子设备或安装特定应用程序来与朋友保持联系。因此,政府出台这项禁令的一个原因是帮助父母解决这一问题。)”可知,前文说明禁令能帮助父母解决因社交媒体引发的家庭矛盾,此空应承接该内容,说明禁令对父母的具体帮助,D选项“It may be easier for them to say, “This is the law.”

故选A项。
根据后文“So parents should explain that less time on social media can reduce endless scrolling and cyberbullying (网络霸凌). (因此,父母应该向孩子解释,减少使用社交媒体的时间可以减少无意义的刷屏和网络霸凌。)”可知,后文建议父母向孩子解释禁令背后的原因,此空应作为该建议的前提,说明年轻人对有明确原因的规则接受度更高,F选项“Actually, young people respond better to rules when given a clear reason. (事实上,当得知明确的原因时,年轻人会更愿意遵守规则。)”引出后文的解释原因的建议,符合语境。故选F项。

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed? Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.

B
A. Confused. B. Attracted. C. Grateful. D. Regretful.
C
