Yin, a Ph. D. student in Beijing, has turned a basement into an “underground cat city” by volunteering to care for about 150 homeless cats. He started in 2016 when he felt lonely after moving to the city. In search of companionship, he reached out to a local animal rescue center and began helping with the homeless cats. “Spending time with these cats makes me feel better,” Yin said. The cats have become his daily comfort.
Every morning at around 7 am, Yin arrives at the cat shelter. He replaces the water, refills the food bowls, and checks the air purifier before heading to his university classes. When Yin first joined, the cat shelter’s conditions were poor. Fortunately, in 2017 a photographer took pictures of the cat shelter, and posted them online, attracting public attention and donations. With those funds, the shelter was upgraded and life level for the cats improved.
As more people donated, Yin formed a donor group that has grown to 107 members. “Cat supplies are no longer scarce; what we need most is people,” Yin noted. Currently, only three long-term volunteers (including Yin) care for the cats, and he worries about the future. He knows that soon he may not be able to devote as much time as before, so he hopes more volunteers will join to help keep the cats safe and healthy.
Despite his hard work, Yin remains modest (谦虚的). “I didn’t really do anything,” he emphasized, explaining that it’s the cats that brought him a sense of peace. In the end, Yin’s greatest wish is to see this “underground cat city” disappear one day — when all the homeless cats find loving homes above ground.
28. Why did Yin volunteer to help homeless cats?
A. He felt lonely in a new city. B. He needed data for his research.
C. He was asked by a rescue center. D. He dreamed of opening a pet shelter.
29. What happened to the cat shelter after its pictures went online?
A. It was supported by the government. B. It stopped taking new homeless cats in.
C. It got money and was greatly improved. D. Most of its cats were adopted immediately.
30. What does the underlined word “scarce” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Free. B. Lacking. C. Achievable. D. High-quality.
31. Which of the following best describes Yin?
A. Selfless and caring. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Independent and brave. D. Strict and hardworking.
A 29. C 30. B 31. A

With those funds, the shelter was upgraded and life level for the cats improved.

D. student in Beijing, has turned a basement into an “underground cat city” by volunteering to care for about 150 homeless cats. (北京的一名博士生Yin通过自愿照顾大约150只无家可归的猫,将地下室变成了一个“地下猫城”。)”以及第三段中“Currently, only three long-term volunteers (including Yin) care for the cats, and he worries about the future. He knows that soon he may not be able to devote as much time as before, so he hopes more volunteers will join to help keep the cats safe and healthy. (目前,只有包括Yin在内的三名长期志愿者在照顾这些猫,他对未来感到担忧。他知道,很快他可能无法像以前那样投入那么多时间,所以他希望更多的志愿者能加入进来,帮助保护猫咪的安全和健康。)”可推知,尹同学无私且有爱心。故选A项。

Every child hopes for gifts for Christmas. But it seemed that my family didn’t have enough money to buy me the bike that I’d wanted for Christmas. After supper was over on Christmas eve, I sat at the table, feeling sorry for myself.
It was cold outside. Soon Dad came back. “Come on, Eric,” he said. “Put on warm clothes. It’s cold out tonight.” I was really upset then. Not only was I not getting the bike for Christmas, but now Dad was dragging me out in the cold. But anyway, I got up and followed him.
Outside, in front of the house, our old truck was ready. The cold was already biting at me. Dad went into the woodshed (柴房) and came out with an armload of wood. “Dad,” I asked, “what are you doing?” He said, “I passed by Ms. Black’s house today. She is a single mother of three kids. Her eldest son, 8-year-old Robert, was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. He was just wearing an old thin shirt, trembling with cold. They’re out of wood, Eric.” That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the room for a big ham. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the truck and wait. When he returned, he was carrying a bag of something in his hand. “What’s in the bag?” I asked. “Coats. They’re out of warm clothes. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a little candy.”
We drove two miles to Ms. Black’s house. We stopped at the gate and unloaded the wood, then we took the other things to the door. Ms. Black opened the door and let us in. The room felt cold. Such a small fire could hardly give off any heat at all. So Dad asked me to add more wood to the fire.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high.

On the way back home, Dad turned to me and began to explain about the bike I had longed for.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high. The room felt warm now. The kids started giggling when Dad handed them each a piece of candy and a coat. Ms. Black looked with a smile. “The children and I have been praying that angels would come to our help and here you come,” she said with tears running down her face. Dad took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug before we left. Out on the truck I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn’t even notice the cold.
On the way back home, Dad turned to me and began to explain about the bike I had longed for. It turned out that he and Mom had finally saved enough money to buy that bike for me. On his way to buy me the gift, Dad saw little Robert out of his house with an old thin shirt. “Son, I spent the money saved for your bike buying coats for the children. I hope you understand,” he said. I understood very well. Now the bike seemed very low on my list of priorities. Dad had given me the look on Ms. Black’s face and the joyful smiles of her three children.

Around the world, festivals are celebrations of history, culture, and tradition. Here are four unique events worth knowing.
Dia de los Muertos (Mexico)
Also known as “Day of the Dead”, this festival isn’t sad but a lively celebration of life and ancestors. Held on Nov 1–2, families build colorful altars with photos, food, and flowers to welcome the spirits of loved ones home. They dance, play music, and share special bread of the dead, creating a warm and respectful atmosphere that honors life rather than mourning loss.
Songkran (Thailand)
Thailand’s New Year is in April, celebrated with water festivals. People pour water on each other to wash away bad luck and welcome a clean new year. Harvest Festival (UK)
In Britain, harvest festivals thank nature for food crops. Families gather in churches or villages in late autumn. They bring fruit, vegetables, and bread to decorate tables. People sing thankful songs and share delicious meals together, expressing gratitude for nature’s gifts and the hard work of farmers.

Yin, a Ph. D. student in Beijing, has turned a basement into an “underground cat city” by volunteering to care for about 150 homeless cats.

In my town, people like to give smile cards to those who have received help. And the receivers continue to help others. With those cards, people enjoy helping and being helped.
I got some smile cards and used three of them just yesterday!
I used the first smile card when I was getting my dogs some food in a pet store. A man walked up to look at collars (项圈), looking puzzled. He asked me if I knew anything about dogs and collars, which actually I was quite familiar with. I helped him choose one. I hope it would work for his dog. When he said thanks, I handed him a smile card.
He smiled and said he would help someone as soon as possible.
That was amazing! Then in a supermarket, when I was paying the bill, a grandma was trying to get her granddaughter out of a basket. I offered to help her, and she said
“Yes, please.” Later she told me that she had just had an operation and couldn’t lift things very well. After getting the baby girl out, I handed her my second smile card.
Then I paid for someone’s food in a small restaurant and left behind the third smile card.
I felt very happy yesterday. It was great to help others and leave behind smile cards. I believe that more and more people will get happiness from receiving and giving smile cards.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high.
