Whether they’re a member of your household or a visitor around the holidays, difficult family members can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being. ___1___
Express your needs using “I” statements.
Starting a statement with “you”tends to sound more like an accusation, while “T” statements allow the focus to be on your own thoughts and feelings. A difficult family member might be more responsive if you speak to them using an “T” statement. For instance, you could say, “___2___”
___3___
Draw some clear lines in the sand to help make your potential interactions more comfortable and manageable. This might involve limiting the amount of time you spend together, refusing to discuss certain topics, or refusing to be spoken to in a certain way. When something is violated, say something like: “I don’t like it when you use pet names with me. Please use my name when we’re speaking.”
Apply conflict resolution strategies when necessary.
Instead of approaching arguments and tense conversations from an “only one of us can be right” perspective, focus on finding peaceful and respectful ways to resolve the conflict, like saying “We’ll have to agree to disagree on this. ” ___4___ Some family members are a magnet for conflict, and some fights just aren’t worth picking.
Avoid sensitive content in conversation.
___5___Thus, it’s best to keep them in the “do not discuss” zone. If you’re worried about uncomfortable topics being brought up, try to join the conversation with someone who shares your viewpoints so you don’t feel isolated.
A. Create clear boundaries with relatives.
B. It also helps to choose your battles wisely.
C. Restrict the time you spend with relatives.
D. You need to stop poking your nose into my personal life.
E. I feel a bit judged when assumptions are made about my personal life.
F. Topics like politics and religion definitely have the potential to get people annoyed.
G. Thankfully, simple strategies can go a long way when you're dealing with negative relatives.

Halloween is coming, and seeing everyone plan out their costumes got me thinking back to my childhood and the costumes I wore. As I grew older, I started having mixed feelings about Halloween. I still like Halloween, and always love a full pocket of candy, but it’s not the same excitement as when I was a kid. There’s just something about being a kid that made it so much better. And for me, that was something coordinated (搭配协调的) family costumes.
It went like this: My parents would pick a theme and have each of us dress accordingly. Most of our Halloween costumes, whether family-themed or solo (单独的), were homemade. Unfortunately, I didn’t always appreciate that. In second grade, I broke tradition by wanting to get a store-bought butterfly costume. I really liked that costume; it was fun to wear. But looking back on it now, I loved our homemade costumes so much more because those costumes were memorable and made with love. Being dressed up all together and having that shared experience really strengthened our family connection and made Halloween something to look forward to.
Recalling my experiences, I wondered if other families did the same. I decided to look around on some popular Halloween store websites to see if they had specific collections of family costumes. On Spirit Halloween’s website, there was a group and family costume section, so that was a good sign. Also, Party City had a very large collection of family Halloween costumes, which made me even more hopeful. To confirm, I called the local Party City and asked if the staff had observed families buying costumes together. To my delight, the manager said yes! She noticed that families buy them costumes every year.
Whether it’s homemade or store-bought, it’s good to know family Halloween costumes aren’t dying. Although the days of coordinated family costumes for me have passed, the memories of those fun times will last forever.

If your day starts with a harsh alarm sound, you might want to rethink your wake-up routine. New research from the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing suggests that the way you’re waking up could be putting unnecessary stress on your heart.
Nursing doctoral student Yeonsu Kim studied 32 participants and found that being forced awake — like by a loud phone alarm — can lead to a significant morning blood pressure surge. This happens when your body is suddenly shifted from sleep to wakefulness. And it was found to be 74% higher in participants who were awakened by an alarm after five hours of sleep compared to those who woke up naturally. And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular (心血管的) risks, including stroke and heart attack.
The increase in blood pressure activates your sympathetic (交感神经) nervous system — the same system that sets off the “fight or flight” response. That can lead to a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, exhaustion, and even physical symptoms like headaches and nosebleeds.
The good news? There are better, healthier ways to greet the day. Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods — and research backs them up. One popular option is a gradual light alarm, also known as a sunrise alarm clock. These devices imitate the rising sun by slowly increasing in brightness over a set period of time. The gentle light helps signal your body to reduce melatonin (褪黑激素) production and transition into wakefulness more naturally, reducing dizziness and morning stress.
There are also alarm apps that use soft music or nature sounds that gradually get louder, helping you wake without shocking your system. A 2020 study even found that melodic sounds — like a song you can sing along with — help reduce sleep inertia, a sleepy, heavy feeling that can last for hours after waking up.
Small changes can make a big difference in how your body starts the day, and your heart will thank you for it!
28. What physical symptoms can be caused by activating the sympathetic nervous system?
A. Nervousness and tiredness. B. Slower heartbeat.
C. Improved sleep quality. D. Natural wakefulness.
29. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. How melatonin affects our sleep quality.
B. The introduction and benefits of gradual light alarms.
C. The importance of getting enough sleep every night.
D. The dangers of using traditional alarm clocks.
30. What can be inferred from the research findings mentioned in the text?
A. Gradual waking methods may lower the risk of heart related diseases.
B. Loud alarms are the primary cause of strokes and heart attacks worldwide.
C. Reducing melatonin production immediately improves cardiovascular health.
D. People who wake up naturally never experience morning blood pressure surges.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To persuade us to stop using alarms.
B. To criticize modern sleep habits.
C. To recommend gentler wake-up methods.
D. To compare different types of alarm sounds.
In an exhibition hall in Chengdu, southwest China, Gregory Cattin, a Frenchman with lots of experience in the beverage (饮料) industry, tasted a cup of oolong (乌龙茶), his expression showing delight.
“This is not just tea; it’s an innovation,” he said. Cattin has been in the global markets for 30 years. Now, he is one of many international buyers attracted by Chinese tea culture. He came to Chengdu for the 112th China Food and Drinks Fair. He said, “I came to seek out good brands and products, hoping to establish partnerships.”
Cattin’s journey reflects a broader change. As Chinese chains expand globally, like ChaPanda in Melbourne and Barcelona, and HEYTEA in London and New York, they’re not just selling drinks—they’re reshaping global beverage market. ChaPanda has sold over 140,000 cups of its popular drink “Yangzhiganlu” (mango pomelo sago) overseas. Some tea stores in the North American market can make as much as 7,000 U. S. dollars a day.
The secret to their success lies in local adaptation. In Barcelona, ChaPanda’s matcha brown sugar pearl milk tea became an instant hit, while in Kuala Lumpur, the rich milky-flavored tea suits local preferences. “It’s about honoring local tastes while keeping our Chinese soul,” said Wang Huan, head of ChaPanda’s global operations.
The creativity goes beyond taste. HEYTEA’s New York Lab decorates the store with bamboos, making it a cultural place. Special-release drinks with Peking opera or ancient Chinese legend designs turn each order into a storytelling time.
As Cattin tried to make deals to bring these teas to Europe, he said, “China didn’t just invent tea; they’ve reimagined it for the world.” The global new-style tea market is growing fast, and Chinese tea culture is becoming more and more popular around the world.
32. Why did Gregory Cattin come to Chengdu?
A. To find good tea brands and products. B. To visit famous tea markets in Sichuan.
C. To experience the history of Chinese tea. D. To participate in a tea-making competition.
33. How does the author prove the success of Chinese tea chains overseas in Paragraph 3?
A. By quoting Cattin. B. By providing data.
C. By giving a definition. D. By making comparisons.
34. What makes Chinese tea chains successful overseas?
A. Diversifying tea flavors abroad.
B. Opening more branches abroad.
C. Offering lower prices compared to local competitors.
D. Combining Chinese traditions with local preferences.

Nancy was lonely at school, until she befriended a rescue horse called L’il Bit.
On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, Nancy sat in her room, busy with her color pencils. Downstairs, her mom called up the old wooden staircase, “What were you doing up there, honey? I heard a noise.” Nancy replied it was nothing. Mom smiled and guessed she was drawing horses again.
Nancy loved horses and dreamed day and night about having one. Mom told her she couldn’t have a horse as a pet. Nancy explained she didn’t want a horse as a pet—she just wanted one as a friend. Nancy was shy in school and had no friends. She thought she simply didn’t fit in with her classmates.
A few days later, Nancy’s mom said she had a surprise for her. While in the market, Nancy’s mom had found a flyer (传单) about a fundraising event for a local horse rescue. Nancy asked what a horse rescue was. Mom explained it was a place for homeless horses, but the place needed money and volunteers to help the horses.
The flyer appealed for donations, volunteers, and other help. Nancy’s mom took her to the event that weekend. Nancy could barely contain her excitement in the car.
The place where the horses lived was beautiful. Each horse had its own stall (马厩). Nancy peered (瞥见) over one stall door and saw a horse, much smaller than the rest, standing all the way in the corner. The program director opened the stall door and introduced her as L’il Bit.
L’il Bit backed away. The director explained the horse was shy. Because she was shorter and not as pretty as the other horses, she didn’t get much attention from visitors. Nancy remarked that L’il Bit was shy like her, and she thought the horse was beautiful.
Determined, Nancy asked her mom if she could volunteer.

24. What made the author’s childhood Halloween special?
A. Candies. B. Events. C. Clothes. D. Atmosphere.

B. To compare the prices of Halloween costumes
C. To buy family Halloween costumes for himself
D. To check the popularity of family Halloween costumes

故填are consumed。
故填which。
故填an。
故填on。
enough to do... 故填to change。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After a lot of discussion, her mom finally agreed. With excitement filling her heart, Nancy began volunteering every weekend at the horse rescue. At first, L’il Bit would shy away, but Nancy patiently stood by the stall, speaking softly and offering apples. Gradually, the horse started approaching Nancy, her dark eyes reflecting trust. One golden afternoon, as the setting sun cast shadows across the stall, L’il Bit leaned into Nancy’s palm for the first time. Nancy’s eyes were sparkling with joy as she gently stroked the horse’s back, their friendship slowly working its magic.
In those years Nancy became more confident and outgoing. The bond with L’il Bit gave her the courage to step out of her shell. The once-shy girl now stood tall, her voice steady as she gave presentations about horse rescue at school. The classmates who had previously ignored her but now gathered around, listening to her stories and admiring her. Just as she’d helped L’il Bit find courage, she’d found her own strength through this journey. Finally, it dawned on Nancy that when you mend a broken soul, you mend your own.
