According to a new study by scientists from the University of Chicago in the USA, English-speaking children start making their own sentences at about 2.5 years old. To do this, children need to first understand the rules of the language. For English, one important rule that determines (限定词), like “a” and “the”, go in front of nouns (名词). For 90 minutes every four months, the scientists recorded 64 English-speaking children talking with their parents. The scientists found that at around 30 months old, children started using both “a” and "the" in front of the same noun, for example, “dog”. This showed that they understood the determiner-noun language pattern (模式). What was more, they were using the pattern to create more expressions their parents had never said. However, the recordings cannot cover everything the children hear and say each day. So, the scientists developed an AI model to double-check their findings. Like a human child, the model could find language patterns in the recordings and predict (预测) the words to come. “For the most part, it does what the child does,” said Susan Goldin-Meadow, one of the scientists. The team then waited to see when the model produced its first new determiner-noun phrase. The result agreed with the 30-month time frame. The findings further help people’s understanding of language learning. It can also help better teach children with special needs, such as those learning sign language. ( )1. What does the underlined word “creators” mean in Paragraph 1? A. Children who copy their parents’ words. B. Children who make their own sentences. C. Children who make their own decisions. D. Children who can understand a language. ( )2. How did the scientists know that children create rather than copy sentences? A. By checking if they can read and write. B. By checking if they can make complete sentences. C. By seeing if they produce new determiner-noun phrases. D. By seeing if they understand most rules of the English language. ( )3. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How the scientists prepared for the study. B. What the determiner-noun language pattern is. C. What language patterns the children prefer to use. D. How the scientists did the study and what results they got. ( )4. How did the AI model help in the study? A. It showed how the children learn language rules. B. It explained why the children use the determiner-noun pattern. C. It predicted when the children start making their own sentences. D. It discovered how the children can express themselves with a few words. 六、任务型阅读 We have all heard of fake news, but do any of us really understand what it means? There are two types of fake news: misinformation and disinformation. When false information is shared by someone who believes it to be true, it is misinformation. Normally it isn’t done on purpose and people don’t mean to cheat. However, when people share false information to cheat others, this is disinformation. It is important to learn how to recognize (辨别) fake news. Then we will not be tricked into believing it or letting it influence our actions. Fake news spreads easily. For example, people may share it with friends on social media. Fake news may cause stress or hurt for the person it targets. Those who spread the news think that they are not to blame. They don’t write it. They only share it. Yet sharing fake news is just like adding fuel (燃料) to a fire. It is exactly what the person behind the fake news wants. Sometimes certain facts are missed out in the news, as the writer wants to make the readers believe the story. We can fact-check the story with another news source if we are unsure. A news article can also influence us to buy something. Companies often pay a news organization to talk about their products. If we are not sure, ask ourselves, “Is the article advertising something?” Question it, rather than believe it, and then we can work out whether or not the news is fake. If it is fake, don’t spread it. Fake news (1)_______________ types of fake news • Misinformation: people sharing the news believe it is (2)_______________. • Disinformation: people share it to (3)_______________ others. Influence of fake news • If we believe it, we may get a wrong (4)_______________ or take wrong actions. • People sharing it makes things (5)_______________. • It does (6)_______________ to the person that it targets.
