The English often say “Other countries have a climate (气候); in England we have weather.” That’s because the weather in England changes all the time! One moment it’s sunny, and the next moment it’s rainy. You never know what is coming.
Spring in England is mild (和煦的) but changeable. The weather changes so frequently that it makes forecasting (预报) a challenge. Sunshine and showers follow each other so often that you should always carry an umbrella.
Summer is the warmest season. It usually gets very hot in July and August. The days are long, and the nights are short. Many people go to the seaside to enjoy the sun. But don’t expect every day to be hot—it can still rain in summer.
Autumn brings cooler weather and windy days. September and October can be quite warm and dry. The leaves turn yellow, orange and red before falling from the trees. Late autumn is often cooler and wetter. Everything begins to take on a different colour. The trees look bare (光秃秃的), and the sky is full of low clouds.
Winter brings short days and long nights to England. The temperature doesn’t often fall very low, but the wet air and strong wind make it feel much colder. Heavy snow is hardly seen, while rain is common. The weather is often foggy, and grey skies can last for days. But when the sun does come out, it’s a special treat!
So now you know why English people always talk about the weather. With so many changes, there’s always something new to say!
4. Why do the English say they have weather instead of climate?
A. Because the weather changes all the time.
B. Because it’s easy to forecast the weather there.
C. Because the weather stays the same all year round.
5. Which of the following is TRUE about winter in England?
A. More rain falls than snow.
B. The sun shines brightly all day.
C. The temperature often drops below zero.
6. How does the writer organize the text?
A. By describing each season in order.
B. By explaining the causes of weather changes.
C. By telling a personal story about the four seasons
【答案】4. A 5. A 6. A
【解析】

Lightning strikes kill millions of trees each year—but it turns out that some large tropical (热带的) trees can not only stay alive after they’re hit by a strike, but also benefit from its effects, according to a recent study.
Some trees are getting repeatedly hit by lightning over their lifetime. But why can they survive (幸存)? Researchers don’t know for sure. However, they think that trees will be heated less if they’re more conductive. That means the energy from lightning is just moving to their neighbors, instead of staying in them. The lightning’s. strong power kills the parasitic vines (寄生藤类) on the trees. It also kills some other trees nearby, reducing competition.
Dipteryx oleifera, a tree in Panama’s forests, has probably experienced 10 lightning strikes so far. It stays safe and sound, while most of the neighboring trees were killed. If you are in the forest where it is, you’ll know what it is—its huge size and height. “We believe the trees in Panama’s forests have five strikes on average (平均). But, you know, some of them clearly have a ton.” Evan Gora, a forest ecologist said.
How long do these trees live in the forests? People can’t do tree ring dating in tropical forests because the trees don’t make continuous growth rings. Researchers guess many of the trees would be hundreds, or maybe even more than 1,000 years old.
What can we learn from the study? The hardest things can turn into good things, can they?
7. What does the underlined word “conductive” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. 绝缘的 B. 导电的 C. 耐性的
8. What may happen after the large trees are hit by lightning?
A. They enjoy better living conditions.
B. They have more neighbors around.
C. They can withstand more kinds of dangers.
9. What does the tree Dipteryx oleifera look like?
A. Old and weak. B. Huge and tall. C. Straight and thin.
10. Why can’t people tell the exact age of the large trees hit by lightning?
A. Because the weather there is terrible.
B. Because people don’t have proper tools.
C. Because continuous growth rings can’t be found.
【答案】7. B 8. A 9. B 10. C
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了热带地区一些大型树木被闪电击中后不仅能存活,反而能受益的现象及其原因。
【7题详解】
根据第二段“However, they think that trees will be heated less if they’re more conductive. That means the energy from lightning is just moving to their neighbors.”可知,如果树木更“导电”,闪电的能量就会转移到邻居身上,从而自身发热更少。因此“conductive”意为“导电的”。
【8题详解】
根据第二段“The lightning’s strong power kills the parasitic vines on the trees. It also kills some other trees nearby, reducing competition.”可知,闪电杀死了树上的寄生藤蔓和周围的树木,减少了竞争,使得被击中的大树获得更好的生存条件。
【9题详解】
根据第三段“If you are in the forest where it is, you’ll know what it is—its huge size and height.”可知,Dipteryx oleifera 这棵树的特点是巨大且高大。
【10题详解】
根据第四段“People can’t do tree ring dating in tropical forests because the trees don’t make continuous growth rings.”可知,热带森林的树木没有连续的生长年轮,因此无法准确测定它们的年龄。

Chinese people enjoy special food on big days. Zongzi is for the Dragon Boat Festival. Every year, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. On the day, people eat zongzi to remember Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet.
Zongzi comes in different shapes. But most are triangular (三角形的). The outside is made of bamboo leaves. They help to give a special smell to the rice inside. There are many kinds of zongzi with different fillings. In the north, people like sweet zongzi with red beans or dates. In the south, people like salty zongzi with meat or egg yolk.
Making zongzi is fun but not easy. Before making it, we put bamboo leaves in water. It helps them get soft. When rice and other things are ready, we can get started. First, fold the leaves into a cup shape. Then, put rice and fillings inside. Next, fold the leaves again to cover them. Finally, tie up the zongzi with ropes.
Today, people can buy zongzi in shops all year round. However, many families still enjoy making their own on this special day. They think making zongzi together brings families together. Also, it’s a way to learn traditions.

C
