Nature is the basis of human life. We get everything we need from it. All living things on the Earth depend on each other and form a friendly system. For example, bees pollinate (传粉) flowers, and plants provide food and oxygen for animals and humans. This balance keeps our planet healthy and lively.
However, human activities have caused serious environmental problems. As a result, natural disasters happen more often and many wild animals are in danger. Some rare species may even disappear forever if we do nothing to protect them.
To solve these problems, many countries take action. People build nature reserves to protect endangered animals. They also call on the public to live a low-carbon life and make good use of energy.
Protecting nature is protecting ourselves. Everyone should take part in it.

To most Chinese people, Mount Tai is a symbol of China’s long history and unyielding (不屈服的) spirit. Fengxiang clay figurines are a well-known form of traditional Chinese folk art from Fengxiang County, Shaanxi Province. With a history of thousands of years—dating back to the Neolithic Age, these vivid and colorful sculptures are not only works of art but also an important symbol of Shaanxi’s rich culture, deeply loved by people both at home and abroad.
In the early days, local people used clay to make simple daily tools and objects for worship. As pottery-making skills continued to develop, the art of clay figurine-making slowly took shape. It finally reached its golden age during the Ming and Qing dynasties, becoming popular among common people and widely used in festivals, weddings and other important events to bring joy and good wishes.
Their production process is complex and needs great patience. First, artisans choose high-quality local clay. Next, they knead, pound and filter it to take out impurities (杂质). Then, they shape the clay into lively forms like tigers and historical characters by hand or simple tools. After that, the shaped clay goes through natural drying and high-temperature firing. Finally, the most important step—painting—is carried out, with bold, bright colors to create strong visual contrast.
These clay figurines carry deep cultural meanings. For example, tiger-shaped figurines are believed to drive off evil spirits and bring good luck to families. To protect this valuable traditional art, the local government has set up training centres to teach young people the making skills, while some young artisans are trying new things through mixing traditional styles with modern designs to attract more young people.

In this school, the teacher had set a rule to encourage children to recite the Bible: if he could recite two verses, the teacher would give him one blue ticket; ten blue tickets were equal to one red ticket; ten red tickets could be exchanged for a yellow ticket; if anyone could get ten yellow tickets, the teacher would give him or her a new Bible. Getting the thick book was the greatest honor for children. So they were busy reciting every day. To Tom, it’s impossible, so he thought of a simple way. He exchanged his small things in other children’s hands. In this way, he got many tickets.
At the beginning of the class, the 35-year-old teacher made a daily speech. Tom was playing with the boys around him. He pulled a boy’s hair and pinched another, but when they turned around, he just read the book carefully, but the children began to talk noisily. Some children even began to fight.
Suddenly, the room turned silent because some visitors came into the room. Three adults and one young girl entered. To Tom’s surprise, the little girl was just the “angel”. Tom thought of his meeting with the girl and the adventure in her garden. Among the visitors, the old man was somebody.
Then it was the time to give prizes to those children who had got ten yellow tickets. The room was quiet. Nobody had enough tickets. When hope was dead, Tom stood up with nine yellow tickets, nine red ones and ten blue ones. Then, children suddenly realized that they were cheated by Tom. The teacher didn’t believe Tom could get so many tickets, but the number of tickets was exact. The prize was given to Tom Sawyer and he was introduced to the old man.

But because of the rope he used, his first Guinness application was considered invalid (无效). After online communication with the records management team, Zhou quickly changed to a common rope recognized (认证) by the Guinness World Records. He soon got used to it.
Whatever kind of rope Zhou used, his strict training kept him in good sporting condition. Zhou has been in the school rope skipping team for seven years. He has jumped rope for about four hours each day. He would also run around the playground to improve his physical strength.

Nature is the basis of human life. We get everything we need from it. All living things on the Earth depend on each other and form a friendly system.
1.What do we get from nature?
2.Why do natural disasters happen more often?
3.What do people build to protect endangered animals?

1.Where are Fengxiang clay figurines from?
2.When did Fengxiang clay figurines enter their golden age?
3.How many steps are required to make Fengxiang clay figurines?
4.How does the local government protect Fengxiang clay figurines?
5.What can you do to keep traditional arts like Fengxiang clay figurines alive?

Leaving his smartphone and computer at home, Yang Hao, a 32-year-old doctoral student in Shanxi province, took a trip in the old-fashioned way last year. Over the course of 134 days, he visited 68 counties and cities in 24 provinces across China, and read 40 books.
His journey was inspired (启发) by a screen (屏幕) time notification (通知) from his iPhone. He was shocked that he was spending almost seven hours on his phone each day. Then he had an idea of leaving his phone and computer at home to face the challenges (挑战) of a digital-free (无数字化的) life.

The day starts early for Tang Shengli, a bird protection volunteer in Lanshan, Yongzhou, Hunan Province. At about 5 a.m., the old man is in uniform and ready to start his day’s work protecting and recording migratory birds (候鸟).
Located on the northern side of the Nanling Mountains, Lanshan is an important passageway for migratory birds. From September to December every year, more than 240 kinds of migratory birds fly from Siberia to Australia via (经由) Hunan. In the past 11years, Tang has recorded more than 120 kinds of such birds with his camera. “The flight calls of the migratory birds at night attract me so much that I cannot sleep. Many villagers didn’t think bird hunting was illegal (违法的), and some made a living from it. At that time, during the day, Tang handed out brochures (手册) to villagers in Lanshan to raise public attention of bird protection, while at night, he went deep into the forests to stop illegal hunting.

2.How many kinds of migratory birds has Tang recorded?

Zhou Qi is a 17-year-old student from Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Last September (2023) he broke the Guinness (吉尼斯) World Record for the most single skips (跳绳) in one minute, with a result of 374. The record had stood unbroken for ten years. Daisuke Mimura from Japan held it with 348 skips in 2013.
Interestingly, Zhou’s new record is not even his personal best. “My best performance was 396 times in one minute. That was done in the 2nd Primary and Secondary School Students’ rope skipping Championship in 2020. My coach said I had already broken the world record. However, the road to success was far from smooth. For years, Zhou practised with a special steel rope designed for competition. It’s light and strong.
Now a high school student, Zhou said he’ll put his studies first. But he won’t stop training and still hopes to beat his own record one day.注:除5题答案不作字数要求外,其余每题答案不超过8个词。
