Maybe you’ll meet a word that you don’t know in an exam. Most students may be nervous if a dictionary is not around them. But don’t worry! There are some ways to help you guess the meaning of a word without a dictionary.
Reread the whole sentence. Your first step is to go back and reread the whole sentence. You may forget what you are reading when you meet a new word. Then try to think about the content(内容) of the sentence.
Try guessing the meaning by the background. This will make it different from other parts and you’ll pick it from the rest of the sentence easily. You can often use other words in the sentence to help you find out the meaning of the unknown word.
Think about what else is happening in the sentence. For example, maybe you are looking at a sentence that says, “It was a very sultry day in the middle of the summer.” You may understand each word but “sultry”. Think about what you know about summer. Maybe “sultry” has something to do with the weather. It can help you understand the word easily.
In a word, don’t be afraid of new words. Try your best to understand them by using these ways. Then you can also understand the sentence or text better.

When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the teams at school, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa, “I’m going to be an athlete(运动员).”
“Dave,” Grandpa began kindly, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added(增加) an extra(额外的) mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles, 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.

“But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure you’re ready?” Grandpa asked. But he was still willing to walk over and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day. But I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed(失败).
“No,” he said calmly, “you didn’t fail. You discovered something.”
“I did?” I asked.
“Yes, you discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. They take work. If you train and work hard, I will wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training, Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words filled my head as I tried to make each hard step. As I crossed the finish line, I threw my arms in the air and cried “Grandpa, we did it!”

Lessons Around the World
When I was eight, my family started to move with my father’s job to different countries. Every two years, we moved to a new place and started a new life. At first, I felt sad about leaving friends, but each place taught me something special.
In Japan, I learned to enjoy simple things. Our small Tokyo apartment had a special shelf with just one flower. My neighbour, Mrs Sato, taught me to find joy in daily activities like making tea. “Joy grows where you care for it,” she said.
Next, we moved to Kenya. I joined a group to protect animals. Walking in the hot sun to follow elephant tracks(足迹), I saw how easily nature can be harmed. My friend Kiprono, from a local village, said, “We don’t own the land. We keep it safe for future children.”
Our last home was Brazil. In a poor neighbourhood of Rio, I helped at a school. Children who had almost nothing shared food and smiled. A girl named Maria told me, “Big houses don’t make hearts warm. Small homes can hold big love.”
Now, my memory wall holds three things: a dried flower from Japan, a bracelet(手镯) of the group from Kenya, and a photo of children from Brazil. They remind(提醒) me that the world is like a puzzle(拼图)—different pieces fit together to make something complete. True life isn’t about staying still, but carrying what you learn wherever you go.

A. How to help poor children.

A. It is exciting to live in nature.

Water shortage is a big problem in many parts of the world. In some dry places, not having enough water makes daily life very hard. People there have trouble finding enough water and getting clean water to drink.
One good way to solve this problem is to dig wells(井). With the help of modern technology, wells can now be dug near people’s homes. Special machines dig deep into the ground to find fresh water. After finding the water, a pump is put in. Then people can easily get water from the well. Having wells nearby is great because people don’t need to walk far to get water, and the water they get is clean and safe to drink.
Collecting rainwater is another useful way. It usually needs many people to work together to build water tanks. Some tanks are built on rooftops, and some are built at schools. These tanks collect and store rainwater. The stored rainwater can be used when there is no rain. At school, these rainwater collection systems are like good teaching tools. Students can learn how to save water and protect the environment by using them.
Reusing water also helps a lot when there is not enough water. Water used for washing clothes or taking showers doesn’t have to be thrown away. Even the water used for washing dishes, which can’t be used for drinking or cooking, can be used again. It can be used to water plants and fruit trees. This helps keep the plants alive and saves water at the same time.
