Luna Chen is a popular middle school design teacher. Thousands of students learn easy design skills from her online posts—she loves helping kids create eye-catching works, especially posters! Now she’s answering students’ questions about poster-making and sharing useful tips.
From Mia: What should I think about first when planning my poster?
Think about your audience first. If you don’t know who’ll look at your poster, it might not work well. So take some time to think about: Who are your viewers? What do they need? What problems do they have? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you understand your topic better.
From Leo: How can I make my poster’s main idea easy to understand?
Make your message clear. People often say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Your poster must have a clear message.
It should convey your idea at a glance. For example, if you want to tell people about a fun run, your poster should show energy and movement.
From Tom: How can I choose colors for my poster?
Choose your colors carefully. The colors of your poster are probably the first thing readers notice. So it’s important to choose the right ones. First, pick one main color and two other colors that match it. This will make your poster look nice and organized.

In 2025, high schools across China began fully carrying out “double rest day” policy, allowing students to enjoy weekends without extra classes or homework. This change aims to reduce academic pressure and improve students’ physical and mental health. Before 2025, many high schools held weekend classes or gave heavy homework to prepare for exams like the gaokao. Under the new rules, schools must ensure students have Saturdays and Sundays free. Teachers are encouraged to finish lessons within five school days. For example, some schools now use 40-minute classes instead of 45 minutes, creating more free time.
Students report feeling happier and less stressed. “I finally have time to play basketball and learn painting,” said Li Wei, a 10th grader from Beijing. Schools also organize weekend activities like science clubs, sports competitions, and museum trips. Parents, however, have mixed feelings. While many are concerned about their children’s exam performance.
Some schools tried their best to finish lessons on time. To solve this, teachers now use online platforms to share review materials. “We guide students to study smarter, not longer,” explained Ms. Zhang, a math teacher in Beijing. What’s more, homework is limited to 90 minutes per day, and exams are to focus on key knowledge points.

Weiqi, commonly known as Go in English, is a board game that originated in ancient China. The game is considered one of the Four Arts that Chinese literators (文人) were required to master. Besides Weiqi, they had to learn Chinese calligraphy (shu), painting (hua) and guqin playing (qin).
Weiqi has a history of over 4,000 years, even older than Chinese chess. According to some historical records, the game, known as Yi in its early years, is said to have been invented by Yao (尧) . Seeing that his son had a bad temper (脾气) , Yao was rather worried. So he decided to find something that could help educate his son, and a simple board game came to him.
The rules of Weiqi are simple: using black and white stones (棋子) ,two players take turns placing their stones on empty cross points of the board. The goal is to surround (包围) a larger totaI area on the board while preventing one’s own stones from being taken by the opponent (对手) . Stones do not move and are only taken off the board if they are completely surrounded.
The scene of two people playing Weiqi appears in many traditional Chinese paintings. The image of a player holding a stone over the board, looking for a place to put it, was later turned into a popular Chinese idiom (成语) ,which means “unsure about making a move”. Many children are racing against adult riders. One of them is seven-year-old Aztai. But don’t think he’s new to horse riding. He has been doing it for five years.
This happened at last year’s Inner Mongolia Grassland Naadam Festival (内蒙古草原那达慕大会). Aztai took part in both the 8-kilometer and 12-kilometer races. His father, Khas-Ochir, is a horse trainer and he is also Aztai’s coach. “My son loves riding,” he said proudly. “Now I train with him every day.”
Turning to the youth wrestling (摔跤) event, 12-year-old Chilmeg was trying to push his opponent’s (对手) knee to the ground.
Chilmeg finished eighth in the end. He has been riding horses since he was six and wrestling since he was seven. Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate an endangered bird called the Plains-wanderer. This new information will help protect the rare birds.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. They help control insects and spread seeds, which creates healthier habitats for other wildlife. The birds were once common in eastern Australia. But that has changed as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities. Zoos Victoria says the birds’ numbers have fallen by over 85% in recent years. Scientists believe there are now only 250 to 1,000 of the birds left in the wild.
To protect them, Zoos Victoria first had to learn where they were. Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Ooom” call, and this was the key. The researchers set up 35 recording devices (设备) called “song meters” in nine grassy areas. The “song meters” collected so many hours of recordings, which was too much for humans to study. Then the researchers fed the recordings to an AI system trained to identify (识别) the calls of Plains-wanderers. The AI discovered calls from two of the locations. After that, the scientists double-checked and found the AI was correct. A worker from Zoos Victoria says the discovery is “huge”. It is the first time in over 30 years that the bird has been found west of Melbourne.
The new information of Plains-wanderers will help scientists protect the birds. The team plans to work with the land owners to help protect the birds, and the grasslands they depend on. Now, the researchers are still “listening”—using “song meters” and AI to try to locate more of the Plains-wanderers.
1.What do we know about the Plains-wanderer?
A.It is rare and in danger of dying out.
B.It is a kind of big bird living in forests.
C.It can help people build farms and cities.
2.Why are the Plains-wanderers endangered?
A.They are too small to live in Australia’s grasslands.
B.Their habitats have been turned into farms and cities.
C.They play an important role in protecting native wildlife.
3.Which step do scientists take first to find the bird?
A.Collect recordings B.Use AI to check calls C.Set up recording devices
4.What will the researchers do next according to the passage?
A.Use song meters to help make AI more intelligent.
B.Work with the land owners to help grow rice better.
C.Locate more Plains-wanderers to help protect them.

Ocean waste is the “killer” of the ocean environment, not only causing pollution, but also harming the beach and tourism environment. As a well-known garden city on the sea at home and abroad, Xiamen has taken creative ways to clean up ocean waste.
Xiamen has 333 km² of sea area. To control ocean waste, the city built an ocean sanitation (环境卫生) station in 1994. The station has 3 docks, 8 mechanical (机械的) sanitation vessels (船舰), 48 small vessels, 3 small vessels with a powerful engine that travels very fast, and more than 160 workers to clean ocean waste.
“The mechanical sanitation vessels can achieve rapid cleaning. They can play a special role, especially after terrible weather events like rainstorms, which may bring a lot of waste into the sea,” said Zhang Lianghua, head of the station.
What’s more, Xiamen has also used technology. Xiamen has set up an intelligent platform (智能平台) for ocean waste control to keep a beautiful ocean. This satisfies people’s hopes for a beautiful environment. The platform was put to use in 2022.
The platform uses a technology for ocean waste forecasts (预测). It takes many influences such as weather conditions and water power into consideration. The platform can not only find ocean waste, but also forecast their movement and provide early warnings. The intelligent platform can help the station find where ocean waste is.
Xiamen’s success in ocean waste control is a good example for other cities around the world to follow. Together, we can work towards a cleaner and more beautiful ocean.

Boys and girls, before we start, there are a few things you need to keep in mind: First, safety first---don’t pour water onto desks. Second, follow the steps strictly. Third, observe (观察) carefully. Fourth, class rules: work quietly in groups and raise your hand if you have questions. Today we are going to find out how air pressure affects the water in the straw!
An Experiment about Air Pressure
Materials:
Steps:
▲Fill the cup with water until it’s almost full.
▲Put the straw into the water.
▲Cover the top of the straw with your finger tightly and lift the straw up.
▲Observe what happens to the water in the straw.
The science behind it:
Air pressure is all around us. When you cover the top of the straw with your finger, you stop the air from getting into the top of the straw. The air pressure below the water (from the cup) pushes the water up into the straw, so the water stays in the straw even when you lift it.
1.The following materials are needed in this experiment EXCEPT ________.
A.your finger B.a bottle C.a straw
2.The water stays in the straw when we lift it ________.
A.because the cup is almost full of water
B.because water pressure is everywhere around us
C.because the air pressure below pushes the water up
3.The purpose of this experiment is to ________.
A.show that air pressure is everywhere around us in our life
B.find out how air pressure affects the water in the straw
C.teach students how to do a physics experiment successfully

Horses are some of the most amazing animals on Earth. They are loved for their strength and their close relationships with humans. There are more than 300 different kinds around the world, each with its own size, color, and nature.
Horses have amazing physical characteristics. Their strong, sleek (光滑的) bodies allow them to run fast and travel long distances. Their long manes (鬃毛) and tails add to their beauty. Their large, wide eyes help them see in almost all directions, helping them stay aware of possible dangers. One interesting fact is that horses can sleep while standing up. They get this ability from their wild ancestors, who needed to run quickly from dangerous animals.
Horses have also played an important role in human history. In ancient times, they were used in warfare, farming, and transportation. After exercising, the first thing that many of us want to do is to drink a glass of cold water quickly. It feels really wonderful to have the water travel down our throat smoothly. However, many people often tell us not to do this. Is drinking cold water really unhealthy? What can science tell us about it? Let’s find out the clear answers together.
A number of studies show that cold water slows down a person’s digestion (消化) . Most researchers believe that drinking cold water or cold drinks lowers our body’s core temperature and the temperature inside our body. It also makes our blood vessels (血管) become narrower. Therefore, our body has to burn lots of energy to bring its temperature back to normal, instead of using the energy to digest the food we just eat.
We can compare our digestive system to a hot pot for cooking. Pouring cold water into a hot pot is quite dangerous. Similarly, drinking cold water while eating is just like this. Though it is not that serious, it is not good for our body. That’s why many experts advise us not to drink water during meals. If you really want to drink, water at room temperature is a much better choice.
Besides, cold water brings us more physical troubles than we think. It makes headaches more serious. Many women often have headaches after drinking cold water. Drinking too much cold water also causes a sore throat and a runny nose easily.
For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine has told people not to have too many cold drinks. Modern studies also show that cold water is harmful to health. So we’d better stay away from cold water and ice cubes (冰块) in our daily life to keep healthy.

As a country strong in math, China has many folk games filled with math wisdom. You may have played many of them before. Let’s take a look at the following three intelligence (智力) games—Tangram, Nine Linked Rings (九连环) and Huarong Road.
First popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tangram is a game made up of seven pieces of different shapes, including five triangles, a square and a parallelogram (平行四边形). Players need to use these seven pieces to create new shapes. To do it, they must know about plane geometry (平面几何). In the 18th century, the game spread to the West and soon became popular there.
Nine Linked Rings puzzle has a history of over 2, 000 years. It is made up of nine rings connected to a handle (手柄). Players need to move all the rings from the handle to win the game. This is not a simple game. For example, if you want to move the ninth ring, you have to move the third, fifth and seventh ones first, or you will not be able to do it.
Huarong Road puzzle is a block-moving game. It first appeared in the early 20th century. Each block is named after a character in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, like Cao Cao, Guan Yu and Zhao Yun. To win the game, players need to move the blocks to get Cao Cao out. It aims to test the players’ math knowledge, for example, geometric area.

To art experts, there has been agreement that the paintings held by Russia’s Hermitage Museum and France’s Wildenstein Collection were created by the artist, while the one at Britain’s Badminton House is a copy.
In September 2025, Swiss AI company Art Recognition said there’s an almost 86 percent chance that Badminton House’s painting is real, while Wildenstein’s one is likely a copy.
This case shows the new role that AI plays in authenticating (鉴定) art. In the past, it was up to human experts to decide if a painting was real. They tell real artworks apart from copies using their deep knowledge of artists and modern technologies such as infrared imaging (红外成像).
Now, AI might serve as another cool tool in experts’ toolboxes. The technology can study small details in artworks. It then compares these details with real works by the same artist to find differences that experts and other scientific methods might miss.
However, many experts don’t fully trust AI for identifying (识别) real art. They pointed out that AI can give results without explaining how it reached them. Also, proper training on AI can require thousands of images, but few artists have produced that many works. Artists may also change their style suddenly, so AI that only looks for fixed patterns can easily make mistakes.
“I strongly believe that the future of art authentication lies in the collaboration (合作) between AI and experts,” Art Recognition’s CEO Carina Popovici told ART news.
1.What is the purpose of the first two paragraphs?
A.To show different paintings.
B.To describe famous museums.
C.To introduce the key topic.
2.How did experts tell real paintings from copies in the past?
A.Using their knowledge and modern tech.
B.Turning to AI for necessary help.
C.Checking the artworks’ information.
3.In Paragraph 5, how many reasons are given for why experts don’t fully trust AI?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four.
4.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.AI is better than humans at art identification.
B.AI faces experts’ doubts over art identification.
C.AI will never be used in art identification.

There is a lot of kitchen waste in every family each day. Most people throw it away, but some people are thinking about how to use it. Cao Biru and Wang Yiqing created a special 3D printer called the FOODres AI Printer. The printer can do with different kinds of food waste like banana peels (皮) and coffee grounds. Using these, it can create everyday things, such as cups or bowls.
This printer is AI-guided and user-friendly. It is easy for everyone to use, even if they have no experience of 3D printing. First, users take a photo of the food waste using its special app. Next, the app uses AI to tell what kind of waste it is. Then, the app advises what printable things (“recipes”) users could make. With this information in hand, the printer then makes the food waste into a printable bioplastic paste (生物塑料糊状物). After that, the printer turns the paste into the chosen item (项目). Then users just need to wait until their new item is ready. The process is hands-off, and the machine does everything from processing to printing.
The printer is not only useful, but also good for our earth. Food waste is a big problem. The world wastes more than 1 billion meals every day. Most of them end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) and this is bad for the air. Now, this printer can help people use food waste by giving it “a second life” instead of throwing it away.

The expression is still widely used today.
With its development, Weiqi grew in popularity. Later, it spread to Japan, South and North Korea and Western countries. Today, it has become an international board game.

To prepare for the festival, the boy spent his summer training in both sports. “I watched wrestlers on TV, ” he said. “They looked so powerful. I wanted to be like them, too. Next year, I want to win the championship.”
People of the Mongolian ethnic group celebrate the Naadam Festival every year. Naadam means “ entertainment” and “ games” in Mongolian. The “ three games of men” —horse racing, wrestling and archery (射箭) —are the most important of all. The tradition dates back to at least the 12th century.
Over time, the Naadam Festival has become a stage for sports and social events. There have also been new additions. A car parade (游行), a cheese festival and lively campfire parties are a lot of fun. In 2006, Naadam was added to the national intangible cultural heritage list (国家级非物质文化遗产名录).

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.C

They carried soldiers into battle and helped farmers work in the fields. ▲ They appear in sports such as racing and dressage (花样骑术), showing their speed, power, and intelligence. What’s more, some horses work as helpers for people.
In China, the horse is one of the twelve Chinese zodiac (生肖) signs. It stands for freedom, success, and hard work. The saying “ma dao cheng gong” shows how people admire horses, as it means “success comes quickly, just like a horse running forward”. In Western culture, horses often stand for freedom and bravery.

1.Which italic (斜体) word has the same meaning as the underlined word “lower” in Paragraph 2?

B.To explain the harm of cold water during meals.
C.To show the danger of pouring cold water into a hot pot.
3.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Other health problems caused by cold water.
B.The throat and nose problems caused by cold water.
C.The bad effect of cold water on women’s headaches.
4.Which of the following topics will the writer probably talk about next?
A.The reason why people prefer cold water.
B.The advantages of traditional Chinese medicine.
C.The right time and proper way to drink water in daily life.

【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.B
2.第三段明确说明:“They tell real artworks apart from copies using their deep knowledge of artists and modern technologies such as infrared imaging”,即专家过去依靠对艺术家的深入了解和红外成像等现代技术来鉴别真伪。
3.第五段给出了三个原因:①“AI can give results without explaining how it reached them”(AI不解释推理过程);②“proper training on AI can require thousands of images, but few artists have produced that many works”(训练数据不足);③“Artists may also change their style suddenly, so AI that only looks for fixed patterns can easily make mistakes”(艺术家风格突变导致AI出错)。

Next, the team plan to test the 3D printer and better it in daily life. According to them, the printer can reuse millions of pounds of food waste and help lots of families in need.
