B The Arctic trip with Quark Expeditions is an amazing experience, and I am thankful for it. However,it also makes me realize our presence here sounds pointless in this great setting, like we are visitors from another world. Our 10-day journey explored the Svalbard islands in northern Norway. At our farthest point, the North Pole was still 600 miles away, but I had never been so far north. It felt like we were at the top of the world. The story of humans in the Norwegian Arctic is all about looting (the natural world for fur, coal and other resources. The first recorded visit was by Dutch sailor Willem Barentsz in June 1596,searching for a northeast passage to China.History presenter Federico Gargiulo explained that this discovery put the Arctic on the map. That attracted people to come and try to take those resources. Today, there are environmental controls on visiting this area.On our first day,we watched videos that laid down the law:Do not touch or take anything, and stay with your armed guide for protection from polar bears. We also washed our shoes and feet before boarding or leaving the ship to make the land free of pollution Tourists pay a lot and travel far to see Arctic wildlife. On our last night,we finally got a 2024级高二下期中学情检测英语试题 第4页/共12页 close-up of a polar bear.Everyone rushed to the decks (with cameras. We saw the bear swimming towards us,and as it got closer,we could make out its black eyes and rounded ears. Quark Expeditions'guides are experienced in different fields.I learned a lot from them. The guide Austin Hart's words impressed me:"It's not much of a human planet.Dinosaurs were around for 180 million years.I don't know if humans have that long."As I stood among ice and snowy mountains, this made me feel unbelievably small. 24.Why did Willem Barentsz come to the Norwegian Arctic? A.To draw a map of Norway B.To find a northeast path to China. C.To explore the local history. D.To search for a passage to Holland. 25.What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A.Strict Rules on visiting the Arctic.B.The rising number of tourists. C.The measures to protect wildlife. D.Useful tips on watching birds. 26.How does the author feel after the journey? A.Our presence fits in with the planet.B.It's too cold on the Svalbard islands. C.Human beings are tiny in this world.D.We must stop using natural resources. 27.Where is this text probably taken from? A.A history book B.A news report C.A research paper D.A travel magazine c The room looks like your typical office:white walls, low ceilings, gray carpet worn thin from years of foot traffic. But for this vacant office outside Dupont Circle in Washington,D.C., real estate developers see potential. Cities across the U.S.are struggling with two problems:too much empty office space and not enough housing.Nationally, office vacancy rates reached roughly 20%in 2024,after years of employees working from home.At the same time, the national housing shortage is in the millions. Cities like D.C.,are now betting that by turning empty offices into homes, one crisis can help solve the other. A project in D.C.,which broke ground last month,is the largest such conversion (in the city to date. The overall structure of the buildings will remain the same, but with major additions:a lighter-colored exterior will replace the gray concrete from the 1960s,and old inefficient windows 2024级高二下期中学情检测英语试题 第5页/共12页 will be replaced by larger ones that let in more light per unit.Plans include luxuries such as a pool and a dog park, with projected rent around $4,000 per month.Yet 60 units will be set aside as affordable housing."We would love to do more,"says Matt Pestronk, the president of a development company,"but unfortunately, almost all capital seeks a return. This was as much as we could afford to do." "The scale of the shortage far outpaces what conversions can provide."says Tracy Loh,a fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies adaptive reuse of old buildings. But she argues that these projects still matter,"It does kill two birds with one stone,in terms of providing some housing supply."And it tends to create housing in central,transit-accessible areas that are in high demand. The decline of manufacturing (in the late 20th century offers a glimpse of what comes next. When shifts happen in the economy and society, the built environment must change to match contemporary demand.Just as empty factory floors became trendy apartments, today's empty office spaces are turning into stylish kitchens and bedrooms. 28.What are cities like DC trying to do? A.Repurpose empty offices. B.Tear down unused buildings. C.Build housing in suburbs. D.Encourage working from home. 29.What can be inferred about the project in paragraph 3? A.It requires structural changes. B.It targets low-income families. C.It is funded by the government. D.It balances profit and social needs. 30.What does Tracy Loh think of the conversion? A.Realistic B.Far-reaching C.Demanding. D.Short-sighted. 31.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Cities Are Caught in Crisis B.Housing Demand Is Crying for More C.Offices Are Becoming Homes D.Manufacturing Is Gaining a Second Life D The ocean may appear boundless. It's easy to imagine that fish and other ocean creatures swim freely without restriction. That assumption, however,is mistaken.According to ecologist Karissa Lear, many ocean species stick to specific habitats and seldom go beyond them. This habit can cause unexpectedly big problems, especially when human-built structures get in the way. 2024级高二下期中学情检测英语试题 第6页/共12页 Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in Western Australia. In 2017,a large structure was built by the shore, stretching about 550 yards into the sea. As Lear had feared, the construction did harm the critically endangered green sawfish-they were unable to pass around the barrier. To Lear, this discovery supported a surprising new idea that ocean animals, much like land species, need a helping hand getting around human-built structures On land, wildlife crossings are becoming more common.Green bridges, for instance, help bears and elk avoid a road in Canada's Banff National Park.In 2022,a wildlife crossing in Washington State was used more than 5,000 times by animals such as deer and coyotes.Although the bridges are already popular on land,Lear says little attention has been paid to the idea of wildlife crossings designed to help ocean animals get around safely. For ocean animals, too many barriers can cut them off from important feeding sites.Overly limited movement can lead to the development of isolated groups that are more likely to go extinct. With more large structures planned for the Ashburton River area,Lear says the cumulative effect of multiple barriers is a real concern for the green sawfish's future As the climate continues to change, paying attention to the needs of ocean animals is important. Many are moving farther north, and they need suitable habitats to move through. To address this,we can create crossings through human-built structures or protect habitats along their migration routes. As we continue to engineer the ocean, such efforts could go a long way toward protecting ocean life. 32.How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph? A.By detailing research findings. B.By describing a natural scene C.By addressing public concerns. D.By challenging a common belief. 33.What effect did the structure near the Ashburton River have? A.It provided a new habitat for ocean life B.It blocked the path of the green sawfish. C.It attracted more new species to the area. D.It drove the green sawfish into deep waters. 34.What does Lear imply about wildlife crossings? A.They have reduced road accidents on land.B.They will replace ocean barriers eventually C.They have destroyed land animals'habitats.D.They are urgently needed for ocean animals. 35.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Wildlife Crossings:From Land to Sea B.When Ocean Life Is in Danger C.The Sawfish That Lost Their Way Home D.Ocean Structures:No Harm Done 2024级高二下期中学情检测英语试题 第7页/共12页 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 As a freezing cold winter draws near, the winter blues often sets in-a low mood marked by feeling sadder, less energized or less interested in activities than usual.36 Here is what you can do to get it over. Laughter is the best medicine that stimulates brain activity to relieve depressive symptoms. 37 You can get the greatest gift from them:a hearty laugh.Laughter is highly infectious, so invite friends to join you and share the popcorn. While prolonged screen time isn't advised,an occasional movie marathon is perfect on cold days. It's essential to build activities into your day and give yourself a manageable task to complete Even chores like cleaning the floor will give you a sense of competence and achievement. 38 You can treat yourself to fresh flowers or homemade cup of hot cocoa. These fun or meaningful things are the basis for behavioral activation,a vital means of boosting spirits 39 If a coworker's upcoming Bermuda vacation sparks your travel wish, plan a local staycation-even a mini one,for example,a Sunday afternoon ice skating with friends, trying a new nearby restaurant or going to a concert. All this requires neither a big budget nor time off work but still cheers you up. Lack of sunshine disturbs the body's biological clock, leading to a drop in serotonin ( and vitamin D levels, and therefore, your mood and energy levels. If you have flexibility and the weather allows, try to schedule early-morning walks or lunchtime jogs outside to get more natural light.40 A.Stop thinking about unpleasant stuff. B.Line up a bunch of comedies to watch. C.Positive habits can promote self-discipline. D.But do balance your hard work with minor joys E.They'll brighten your day and recharge your energy. Just then, a lady called out. “My cat seems to like you.” Lucy responded with a smile, expressing her desire to give one to Grandma and her concern over the cost of $20 at the pet shop. The lady nodded sympathetically, mentioning that her cat would soon have kittens. She would love Lucy to come and choose one for her grandma once they are old enough. There, she found four adorable kittens and chose the one that looked the most like the cat Grandma had lost. As she made her way back home, eager to deliver the precious gift to her grandma, the anticipation consumed her. When Lucy finally presented the cat. Grandma was surprised and pleased. B The Arctic trip with Quark Expeditions is an amazing experience, and I am thankful for it. However, it also makes me realize our presence here sounds pointless in this great setting, like we are visitors from another world. Our 10-day journey explored the Svalbard islands in northern Norway. At our farthest point, the North Pole was still 600 miles away, but I had never been so far north. It felt like we were at the top of the world. The story of humans in the Norwegian Arctic is all about looting (掠夺) the natural world for fur, coal and other resources. The first recorded visit was by Dutch sailor Willem Barentsz in June l596, searching for a northeast passage to China. History presenter Federico Gargiulo explained that this discovery put the Arctic on the map. That attracted people to come and try to take those resources. Today, there are environmental controls on visiting this area. On our first day, we watched videos that laid down the law: Do not touch or take anything, and stay with your armed guide for protection from polar bears. We also washed our shoes and feet before boarding or leaving the ship to make the land free of pollution. Tourists pay a lot and travel far to see Arctic wildlife. On our last night, we finally got a close-up of a polar bear. Everyone rushed to the decks (甲板) with cameras. We saw the bear swimming towards us, and as it got closer, we could make out its black eyes and rounded ears. Quark Expeditions’ guides are experienced in different fields. I learned a lot from them. The guide Austin Hart’s words impressed me: "It’s not much of a human planet. Dinosaurs were around for 180 million years. I don’t know if humans have that long." As I stood among ice and snowy mountains, this made me feel unbelievably small. 24. Why did Willem Barentsz come to the Norwegian Arctic? A. To draw a map of Norway B. To find a northeast path to China. C. To explore the local history. D. To search for a passage to Holland. 25. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Strict Rules on visiting the Arctic. B. The rising number of tourists. C. The measures to protect wildlife. D. Useful tips on watching birds. 26. How does the author feel after the journey? A. Our presence fits in with the planet. B. It’s too cold on the Svalbard islands. C. Human beings are tiny in this world. D. We must stop using natural resources. 27. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A history book B. A news report C. A research paper D. A travel magazine C The room looks like your typical office: white walls, low ceilings, gray carpet worn thin from years of foot traffic. But for this vacant (空着的) office outside Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., real estate developers see potential. Cities across the U.S. are struggling with two problems: too much empty office space and not enough housing. Nationally, office vacancy rates reached roughly 20% in 2024, after years of employees working from home. At the same time, the national housing shortage is in the millions. Cities like D.C., are now betting that by turning empty offices into homes, one crisis can help solve the other. A project in D.C., which broke ground last month, is the largest such conversion (转化) in the city to date. The overall structure of the buildings will remain the same, but with major additions: a lighter-colored exterior will replace the gray concrete from the 1960s, and old inefficient windows will be replaced by larger ones that let in more light per unit. Plans include luxuries such as a pool and a dog park, with projected rent around $4,000 per month. Yet 60 units will be set aside as affordable housing. “We would love to do more,” says Matt Pestronk, the president of a development company, “but unfortunately, almost all capital seeks a return. This was as much as we could afford to do.” “The scale of the shortage far outpaces what conversions can provide.” says Tracy Loh, a fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies adaptive reuse of old buildings. But she argues that these projects still matter, “It does kill two birds with one stone, in terms of providing some housing supply.” And it tends to create housing in central, transit-accessible areas that are in high demand. The decline of manufacturing (制造业) in the late 20th century offers a glimpse of what comes next. When shifts happen in the economy and society, the built environment must change to match contemporary demand. Just as empty factory floors became trendy apartments, today’s empty office spaces are turning into stylish kitchens and bedrooms. 28. What are cities like DC trying to do? A. Repurpose empty offices. B. Tear down unused buildings. C. Build housing in suburbs. D. Encourage working from home. 29. What can be inferred about the project in paragraph 3? A. It requires structural changes. B. It targets low-income families. C. It is funded by the government. D. It balances profit and social needs. 30. What does Tracy Loh think of the conversion? A. Realistic. B. Far-reaching. C. Demanding. D. Short-sighted. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Cities Are Caught in Crisis B. Housing Demand Is Crying for More C. Offices Are Becoming Homes D. Manufacturing Is Gaining a Second Life D The ocean may appear boundless. It’s easy to imagine that fish and other ocean creatures swim freely without restriction. That assumption, however, is mistaken. According to ecologist Karissa Lear, many ocean species stick to specific habitats and seldom go beyond them. This habit can cause unexpectedly big problems, especially when human-built structures get in the way. Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in Western Australia. In 2017, a large structure was built by the shore, stretching about 550 yards into the sea. As Lear had feared, the construction did harm the critically endangered green sawfish — they were unable to pass around the barrier. To Lear, this discovery supported a surprising new idea that ocean animals, much like land species, need a helping hand getting around human-built structures. On land, wildlife crossings are becoming more common. Green bridges, for instance, help bears and elk avoid a road in Canada’s Banff National Park. In 2022, a wildlife crossing in Washington State was used more than 5,000 times by animals such as deer and coyotes. Although the bridges are already popular on land, Lear says little attention has been paid to the idea of wildlife crossings designed to help ocean animals get around safely. For ocean animals, too many barriers can cut them off from important feeding sites. Overly limited movement can lead to the development of isolated groups that are more likely to go extinct. With more large structures planned for the Ashburton River area, Lear says the cumulative (累积的) effect of multiple barriers is a real concern for the green sawfish’s future. As the climate continues to change, paying attention to the needs of ocean animals is important. Many are moving farther north, and they need suitable habitats to move through. To address this, we can create crossings through human-built structures or protect habitats along their migration routes. As we continue to engineer the ocean, such efforts could go a long way toward protecting ocean life. 32. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph? A. One day, her class teacher talked about gifts and how it is much more important to give them than to receive them. She said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class would remember to give something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them. Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and wondered how she could afford to give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a week for pocket money, and that didn’t go very far these days. Somehow, she thought, she would try to buy something for Mother, and Daddy, and brother, and sister, but, oh, dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma? The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to give Grandma just a card. The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began searching for a card for Grandma that wouldn’t cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of a cat on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost her old tabby cat (斑猫) that she had loved so much. So she bought the card, paying one whole week’s pocket money for it. On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased Grandma was. She said the picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This gave Lucy an idea. “Someday,” she said to herself, “I’ll buy my granny a real cat. Just think how happy she’ll be then!” She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. “Twenty dollars.” said the man. Lucy’s face fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get $20? That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks —five whole months! 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 As she stood on the street, Lucy felt something brushing her leg.__________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Two months later, Lucy went to the lady’s house to get a baby cat.________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2024级高二下期中学情检测英语试题 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
