Once considered a gateway to hell, the Central America Volcanic Arc is now a playground for volcano enthusiasts from around the world. Whether you tackle several volcanoes on a single trip or take them on one by one, these four volcanoes in Central America are ready for adventurers to explore.
The Santa Ana Volcano in El Salvador
The Santa Ana Volcano, also known as Ilamatepec, is the highest volcano in El Salvador. Standing at 7812ft above sea level, it’s the third-highest point in the country. Santa Ana’s crater is one of the largest in the world. Guided tours are mandatory for a popular four-hour hike to the summit that offers stunning views of Lake Coatepeque and the Pacific Ocean.
Volcán Rincón de la Vieja in Costa Rica
Situated in a 54 sq mile national park, the expansive Volcán Rincón de la Vieja, which translates to “old lady’s nook”, is an hour and a half from the town of Liberia. Eruptions in 2021 have closed off hikes to the 6217ft summit. There are shorter hiking loops around the park and to other peaks in the region, such as Volcán Santa Maria, which measures 6286ft.
Barú Volcano in Panama
Located in the Chiriqui Highlands, the dormant (休眠的) volcano and its seven craters are a birdwatching paradise. About 250 species of birds call Parque Nacional Volcán Barú home, including the elusive quetzal. The hike takes 10 to 12 hours. A popular option for experienced hikers is to start a guided ascent at night so that you arrive at dawn and enjoy stunning views at sunrise. The dry season(February to April)is the best time to go.
Cerro Negro in Nicaragua
Just 160 years old, Cerro Negro is the youngest volcano in Central America. Reaching heights of 2388ft, the Nicaraguan volcano located just outside of Leon is one of the most active in the region. But that hasn’t stopped a growing subset of people from hopping on specially designed boards and speeding down the black gravel slopes. Volcano surfing(or volcano surfing)is exactly what it sounds like, trading out the water for rocks and ocean spray for plumes of ash. It’s a perfect combination of pure joy and what most parents would call complete stupidity. Several agencies in the area offer tours to hike and surf the volcano.
21. Which activity is unique in Barú Volcano?
A. Surfing. B. Birdwatching. C. Hiking. D. Swimming.
22. Which place is recommended for racing down slopes?
A. Barú Volcano in Panama B. Cerro Negro in Nicaragua
C. The Santa Ana Volcano in El Salvador D. Volcán Rincón de la Vieja in Costa Rica
23. What do the four volcanoes in Central America have in common?

Raised in Alabama, Lybarger has found unexpected internet fame by introducing his followers to the ignored world of southeastern plants.
A decade ago, he was managing a private land when the owner let him hunt. The land included an open, rocky area, which he decided would be ideal for planting food to bring more deer and wild turkeys there. He then sprayed it with herbicide (除草剂), added soil, put down a feed mix and cut down some trees to let in more light. In the dry, shallow soil, the seeds didn’t take. But around the edges, where he hadn’t sprayed or seeded, the additional sunlight brought a beautiful surprise.
“I came back up the next summer and it was just, like, color everywhere,” says Lybarger. “Just, like, really crazy-looking plants that I saw.”
After he posted photos of the flowers on Facebook, a local botanist named Kevin England got in touch. On a visit to the land, Lybarger was surprised as England pointed out rare and vulnerable species. Lybarger realized that he had killed off an area with a wild seed bank of countless local species.
“That’s when I think managing for biodiversity is probably the best option.”
Lybarger found a mission: to save the remains of those lands. Near his friend Eaton’s property, a long strip of dead grass showed where someone had sprayed herbicide along the road. Lybarger asked Eaton to hang a sign instructing people not to mow or spray. A few miles away, Lybarger pointed out another endangered species, leafy prairie clover, that his social media followers had been helpful in protecting. Then, he partnered with an artist to design a T-shirt featuring the plant, hoping to raise awareness and help pay for preservation efforts.
Lybarger thinks his biggest contribution comes through education on social media, encouraging people to grow the native plants that best support declining insects.
24. Why did Lybarger first make changes to the private land?
A. To remove the weeds. B. To catch more wildlife.
C. To win followers online. D. To bring in new species.
25. How did Lybarger get to find the rare species?
A. By constant trials. B. By professional skills.
C. By considerate planning. D. By an unexpected mistake.
26. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. How Lybarger protected the local plants.
B. Why natives supported Lybarger's plan.
C. Where Lybarger saved the plants.
D. What challenges Lybarger's mission posed.
27. Which of the following can best describe Lybarger?
A. Brave and ambitious. B. Proud and selfless.
C. Influential and responsible. D. Thoughtful and honest.
B 25. D 26. A 27. C

根据第二段中“The land included an open, rocky area, which he decided would be ideal for planting food to bring more deer and wild turkeys there. (这片土地包括一块开阔的岩石地带,他认为在那里种植食物以吸引更多的鹿和野生火鸡会很理想。)”可知,莱巴格尔最初改造这片私人土地是为了吸引更多的野生动物。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“He then sprayed it with herbicide (除草剂), added soil, put down a feed mix and cut down some trees to let in more light. In the dry, shallow soil, the seeds didn’t take. But around the edges, where he hadn’t sprayed or seeded, the additional sunlight brought a beautiful surprise.(于是,他在地上喷洒了除草剂,添了土,撒下饲料混合物,还砍倒了一些树木以增加光照。然而,在干燥贫瘠的浅土里,种子没能发芽。但在边缘那些他既没喷药也没播种的地方,额外的阳光却带来了一场美丽的惊喜。)”、第四段“After he posted photos of the flowers on Facebook, a local botanist named Kevin England got in touch. On a visit to the land, Lybarger was surprised as England pointed out rare and vulnerable species. Lybarger realized that he had killed off an area with a wild seed bank of countless local species.(他在脸书上发布了这些花卉的照片后,当地一位名叫凯文·英格兰的植物学家联系上了他。
根据第六段“Lybarger found a mission: to save the remains of those lands. Near his friend Eaton's property, a long strip of dead grass showed where someone had sprayed herbicide along the road. Lybarger asked Eaton to hang a sign instructing people not to mow or spray. Then, he partnered with an artist to design a T-shirt featuring the plant, hoping to raise awareness and help pay for preservation efforts.(莱巴格尔找到了自己的使命:拯救那些土地的残余生机。
根据第一段“Raised in Alabama, Lybarger has found unexpected internet fame by introducing his followers to the ignored world of southeastern plants. (在阿拉巴马州长大的莱巴格尔通过向他的追随者介绍被忽视的东南部植物世界,在网上意外走红。)”可知,他很有影响力;根据第五段““That’s when I think managing for biodiversity is probably the best option.”(“那时我认为,管理生物多样性可能是最好的选择。”)”及最后一段“Lybarger thinks his biggest contribution comes through education on social media, encouraging people to grow the native plants that best support declining insects. (莱巴格尔认为他最大的贡献来自于社交媒体上的教育,鼓励人们种植最能支持数量下降的昆虫的本地植物。)”可知,他非常有责任感。
C
Six months before she died, my grandmother moved into an old people’s home and I visited her there. She was sitting in the living room with about fifteen other residents, half of them asleep. People only moved when they needed to be helped to the bathroom. It was so depressing.
So, I was really thrilled when I read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes. The idea is simple, but revolutionary: combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents share activities such as music, painting, gardening, and caring for the pets. The residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children and, if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a cuddle. The children are happy because they get a lot more individual attention and someone has time for them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed.
Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, but the result is the same: more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support.
That’s why inter-generational programmes supported by UNESCO and other organisations, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity. There are successful initiatives all over the world. One of the successful schemes pairs young volunteers with old people who are losing their sight. The young people help with practical things such as online shopping and book reading. The older people can pass on their knowledge and experience to their young visitors. For instance, a retired judge may be paired with a teenager who wants to study law. Lasting friendships often develop.
But it isn’t only the individuals concerned who gain from inter-generational activities. The advantages to society are enormous too. If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, and vice versa, there will be less conflict in a community. In a world where the number of old people is increasing, we need as much understanding and tolerance as possible. And we can use the strengths of one generation to help another. Then perhaps getting old won't be such a depressing prospect after all.
28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To explain the author’s visit. B. To show life in care homes.
C. To describe resident interactions. D. To show limits of elderly care.
29. Which of the following is an advantage of inter-generational activities?
A. Generation tension is eased. B. Staff workload is greatly reduced.
C. Activities fit more age groups. D. Children get more emotional support.
30. What can be inferred about the author’s attitude towards inter-generational activities?
A. They should be promoted more widely.
B. They boost young people’s confidence.
C. They reshape the meaning of community.
D. They should be regulated at a societal level.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What Care Services Do B. How Isolation is Tackled
C. When Generations Meet D. Why Society Needs Connection
D 29. D 30. A 31. C

根据第一段“She was sitting in the living room with about fifteen other residents, half of them asleep. People only moved when they needed to be helped to the bathroom. It was so depressing. (她和大约十五位其他住户坐在客厅里,其中一半人睡着了。人们只有在需要被扶去上厕所时才会动一下。这太令人沮丧了。)”可知,首段旨在揭示传统养老院生活的沉闷与局限,为下文引出新型模式做铺垫。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The children are happy because they get a lot more individual attention and someone has time for them. (孩子们很高兴,因为他们得到了更多的个人关注,有人愿意花时间陪他们。)”可知,代际活动让孩子们获得了更多的情感支持与关注。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, and vice versa, there will be less conflict in a community. In a world where the number of old people is increasing, we need as much understanding and tolerance as possible. And we can use the strengths of one generation to help another. Then perhaps getting old won't be such a depressing prospect after all. (如果老年人能够理解和接受今天的年轻人,反之亦然,社区中的冲突就会减少。在一个老年人数量不断增加的世界里,我们需要尽可能多的理解和宽容。我们可以利用一代人的力量来帮助另一代人。那么,也许变老毕竟不会是一个令人沮丧的前景)”可知,作者对这种活动持积极态度,认为应被更广泛推广。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“The idea is simple, but revolutionary: combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building.(这个想法很简单,但具有革命性:在同一栋楼里将一所养老院和一所幼儿园结合起来)”以及第四段“That’s why inter-generational programmes supported by UNESCO and other organisations, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity.(就是为什么由联合国教科文组织和其他组织支持的旨在将老年人和年轻人聚集在一起的代际计划越来越受欢迎的原因)”可知,文章通篇围绕打破老年与青年的隔阂,通过让两代人相遇、互动来解决社会问题,所以“当两代人相遇”适合作为文章标题。
D
As a librarian, I am hearing one question often: Do audiobooks qualify as reading? Many people don’t think so. There is a pride — even a snobbishness — to being well read.
Telling someone that you have only listened to a certain book usually comes out sounding like an apology. A recent survey found that 41 percent of adults don’t believe audiobooks qualify as reading. One friend of mine, who argues with his husband over this, once memorably told me that listening to a book felt like seeing a musical in New Jersey instead of on a Broadway stage. Close, but not the real thing. I used to feel the same way myself.
Part of the disapproval comes from how we tend to think reading works. Reading with the eyes starts with decoding, linking letters to sounds and meanings. But once those pathways are built, the brain draws on the same language network to make sense of words, whether they arrive through sight or sound. A 2019 study of The Journal of Neuroscience by researchers from the university of California found that the brains of people reading or listening to the same stories processed meaning in almost the same way. Focused listening lights up those networks and delivers the same comprehension just as print does. Especially for those with reading disabilities, it can improve comprehension and help them stay with the story. However, casual or distracted listening, like playing an audiobook while doing chores, doesn’t appear to engage those networks fully.
In plenty of classrooms, students still track their progress in reading print pages and sending the messages that only print counts. However, teachers should give students credit for listening to books, too. Youngsters who read daily for enjoyment tend to develop stronger skills and score higher in school — on average, roughly the equivalent of a year and a half ahead. They’re also more likely to keep reading for pleasure later in life. Pairing print and audio has shown to improve comprehension for some struggling readers, especially when decoding written text is a barrier.
32. What does the underlined word “snobbishness” refer to?
A. The sense of superiority in print reading. B. The prejudice against audio reading.
C. The sense of achievement in reading well. D. The ignorance of audio reading.
33. What can be inferred about two reading types from the text?
A. The brain functions the same in both processes.
B. Decoding the text plays a vital role in print reading.
C. Attentive audio reading benefits struggling readers more.
D. Distracted reading worsens reading disorder problem.
34. What message does the author convey in the last paragraph?
A. Developing the habit of reading regularly.
B. Arousing students’ reading interests by audio reading.
C. Evaluating students’ progress by print reading.
D. Adding audio reading to print reading.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why do We Need Audio Reading? B. Audio Reading Deserves Equal Attention!
C. Why is Print Reading More Beneficial? D. Reading is the Best Friend of Youngsters!
A 33. C 34. D 35. B

根据划线词上文“As a librarian, I am hearing one question often: Do audiobooks qualify as reading? Many people don’t think so.(作为一名图书管理员,我经常听到这样一个问题:有声读物算不算阅读呢?很多人并不这么认为)”可知,有学识之人对纸质阅读抱有优越感,觉得听书不算正经阅读。故划线词意思是“书面阅读所带来的优越感”。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段 “Focused listening lights up those networks and delivers the same comprehension just as print does. Especially for those with reading disabilities, it can improve comprehension and help them stay with the story. However, casual or distracted listening, like playing an audiobook while doing chores, doesn’t appear to engage those networks fully.(专注聆听会激活那些大脑网络,如同纸质阅读一样带来相同的理解。尤其对于那些有阅读障碍的人,它能提高理解能力,帮助他们跟上故事。然而,随意或分心的聆听,比如在做家务时播放有声读物,似乎不能充分激活那些网络)”可知,专注的有声阅读对阅读困难的读者更有益。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Pairing print and audio has shown to improve comprehension for some struggling readers, especially when decoding written text is a barrier.(将图文结合与音频配合的做法已被证明能够帮助一些阅读困难的读者提高理解能力,尤其是在阅读文字内容存在障碍的情况下)”可知,作者传达了在纸质阅读基础上增加有声阅读的信息。
根据第一段“As a librarian, I am hearing one question often: Do audiobooks qualify as reading? Many people don’t think so. There is a pride — even a snobbishness — to being well read.(作为一名图书管理员,我经常听到这样一个问题:有声读物算不算阅读呢?很多人并不这么认为。博览群书会让人产生一种自豪感,甚至还会让人显得有些自命不凡)”结合文章主要说明了不少人认为听有声书不算阅读,实则专注聆听与阅读脑部理解机制相近,二者各有优势,校园里应结合使用,给予有声阅读同等认可。可知,B选项“音频阅读同样值得同等重视!”最符合文章标题。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

How to choose the right workout partner
The right workout partner can make all the difference in staying motivated and achieving real results. If you’re wondering who to invite to your next session, consider these essential tips for choosing someone who will truly help you level up.
First and foremost, choose someone with similar goals. For example, you may want to run a marathon, while your partner may only want to tone up. ____36____ This is far from ideal. When you share the same goals, you not only train side by side but also motivate each other more effectively, since you are working toward the same outcome.
It is also vital to find someone with a similar ability level. According to social comparison theory, people tend to mirror the behaviors of those around them. ____37____ If the gap between you is too large, one of you may feel discouraged, which can quickly hurt motivation. By choosing someone with a similar fitness level, you can challenge each other in a healthy way and make steady progress in strength, speed, and overall performance.
____38____ You and your workout partner should agree on training frequency and intensity. When your expectations are the same, you can support each other consistently — pushing through tough sessions, staying accountable, and offering encouragement when it’s needed most.
Finally, make sure you both share a long-term vision. ____39____ Since fitness involves both immediate targets and distant goals, you need a companion who is in it for the entire journey.
Choosing wisely not only boosts your motivation and progress but also makes every training session more effective and enjoyable. ____40____
A. Simply put, your partner choice is vital.
B. In that case, you may end up training separately.
C. It is equally important to schedule your training time.
D. In a fitness setting, this relates to the abilities of your partner.
E. Furthermore, ensure you share the same level of commitment.
F. It’s essential to find a partner with a level of ambition that matches yours.
G. In addition, look for a partner who approaches life with a positive attitude.
B 37. D 38. E 39. F 40. A
上文“For example, you may want to run a marathon, while your partner may only want to tone up.(例如,你可能想跑马拉松,而你的伙伴可能只想塑形)”说明健身目标不同的具体情况。
上文“According to social comparison theory, people tend to mirror the behaviors of those around them.(根据社会比较理论,人们倾向于模仿周围人的行为)”说明社会比较理论的内容。
E选项中的“Furthermore”承接上文,“share the same level of commitment”与下文中的“agree on training frequency and intensity”相呼应。
上文“Finally, make sure you both share a long-term vision.(最后,确保你们都有相同的长期愿景)”说明长期愿景的重要性。 F选项中的“a level of ambition that matches yours”与上文中的“share a long-term vision”相呼应。
上文“Choosing wisely not only boosts your motivation and progress but also makes every training session more effective and enjoyable.(明智地选择不仅能提高你的动力和进步,还能让每一次训练都更有效、更愉快)”说明明智选择健身伙伴的好处。

Last month, our class decided to set up a Love Book Corner in the classroom. All of us took an active part in this meaningful activity. Each student brought several second-hand books that we no longer needed and put them on the shelf, so we could share reading resources and enrich our after-class life. Very soon, the book corner became extremely popular and was deeply welcomed by every classmate.
During the break last Friday, I chose an old English book from the corner. Although it had been read for many times, it was still in good condition. When I opened it gently, several pieces of small notes fell onto my desk. I picked them up and felt quite surprised. The notes were full of useful learning skills and sincere encouraging words, which were meant to help the reader. At the bottom of the last note, there was no name or class, only a warm sentence: “For the next reader, may you feel warmth and progress little by little.”
I was deeply touched by the kindness from a stranger. I could easily imagine how carefully the student had written these words with a kind heart. The simple notes lit up my afternoon and filled my heart with warmth. At that moment, I made up my mind to pass on this kindness and let more people feel the beauty of sharing and caring.

Paragraph 1:
That afternoon, I prepared my own warm note for the book. I wrote down my practical English learning methods like making word cards and reading aloud daily, and added some encouraging words hoping to bring warmth to the next reader. I folded the note carefully and put it between the pages, then placed the book back to its original position on the shelf. I shared the touching story with my deskmate, who was deeply moved and promised to leave her own warm notes in the books she read. We both felt happy to pass on this simple but precious kindness.
Paragraph 2:
Several days later, a lovely change appeared in our class. More and more students found the encouraging notes and joined us in writing their own words — some shared learning tips, some left positive wishes. Our book corner soon became a warm station full of love and care. Our teacher noticed this change and praised us highly, encouraging the whole class to keep this good habit. This experience made us truly understand that kindness is contagious. Even small actions can bring great warmth to others and make our class a more united and loving family.
