I begged Mom not to drop me at Grandpa’s. Every time I visited, I felt ___1___ and uneasy. It seemed there was a distance between Grandpa and me. Mom explained that it was because of Grandma’s passing away, but I just felt he didn’t love me.
Seeing him lost in TV, I started on homework after walking in. Soon, I finished. Wondering what to do next, I suddenly heard Grandpa’s voice, “Want to watch TV?” Unexpectedly, I sensed a touch of ___2___.
“O-OK.” I answered. While he changed channels, I moved a bit to sit closer to him. Then, my heel hit something hard. I pulled it out—a wooden box. Grandpa gently wiped off the dust on it and ___3___ opened it. “This pretty chess set is a gift from your Grandma,” he said with something in his throat. “She taught me to play and we played for 37 years until, until...” He seemed to try very hard to control the ___4___ welling up from his heart.
“Want to learn?” he asked, much calmer.
“Sure.” I agreed immediately.
He explained the rules very patiently. But when we played, he didn’t go easy on me. He won in nine moves — then again, and again!
“This merciless (心狠的) old guy! Want me to ___5___? No way!” I thought to myself. I started watching carefully and ___6___ his traps (陷阱) one after another. Grandpa’s eyebrows lifted and it took him long to think.
At the seventh game, I set one trap. Though Grandpa paused, he still fell into it. My Knight took his Queen.
Grandpa ___7___. Then, he laughed — deep and warm. “You little fox! That was really clever!”
I froze, too. I’d never seen him so happy and we’d never been so ___8___.
We kept this ___9___ Mom came back. She was surprised to see us playing chess. Before I left, I turned, and gave him a hug, “Thanks for the chess. I love you, Grandpa.”
He looked up, eyes wet, and smiled — a real, soft, happy smile. It was then that I knew how to _____10_____ him, this lovely, lonely old man next time.

根据前句“I begged Mom not to drop me at Grandpa’s.”以及后句“It seemed there was a distance between Grandpa and me”,可以看出作者内心是抗拒和消极的。
get in“进入”、go on“继续”和go off“离开/爆炸”均不合逻辑。
before“在……
A

Big Ideas for Tomorrow
Olivia Li: Every family will have a remote-controlled (可遥控的) airplane. These planes will take us anywhere we want in just a few minutes.
Eton Wang: In the future, most jobs will be done by robots, so people will need to work for only five minutes a day. For the rest of the day, they can play with their children or relax and watch their favorite shows.
Betty Chen: In the future, there will be a robot chef at home that cooks my favorite dishes and serves them right in my dining room.

根据第一段“invited some local children to let their imaginations run wild --and they certainly didn't hold back!”,这里的“run wild”意为让思维不受拘束地自由驰骋。
根据文中Jude Huang所说的“It will make and deliver your favorite drink... when you ask for it while lying in bed!”,这说明智能床头柜可以根据指令制作不同的饮品。
文中Noah Zhu说的是“Jet planes will replace cars. Students will fly to school”,是喷气式飞机代替汽车让学生飞着上学,不是自动驾驶的能飞的汽车。
B
“Super El Niño” Around the Corner?
You may have heard of El Niño. But this year, climate scientists believe a strong El Niño—sometimes called a “Super El Niño”—may be on the way.
“Super El Niños” are rare. There have been only five since 1950. The last one happened from 2015 to 2016. Scientists are not completely sure if another one will form this year, but the chance is as high as 61 percent.
The prediction is based on recent record-setting weather. From January to March, the United States had its driest start to a year on record. Europe experienced its second-warmest March ever. March also saw the second-warmest global sea surface temperatures on record.
El Niño and La Niña refer to the warm and cool stages of a natural climate pattern in the tropical (热带的) Pacific. During El Niño, ocean temperatures rise higher than usual. During La Niña, they drop lower than usual. El Niños usually happen every two to seven years. They can last anywhere from nine months to a few years.
The effects of El Niño are not the same everywhere. Places that are usually dry may receive a lot of rain. Those that are usually wet may end up drier than normal. A strong El Niño can mean a quieter hurricane season in the Atlantic (大西洋) but more storms in the Central Pacific. The summer monsoon (季风) season in South Asia could be weaker. The fall and winter could bring drought conditions to parts of the Amazon and Australia.
Strong El Niños can change weather patterns for years. The 2015-16 “Super El Niño” left the Gulf of Mexico (墨西哥湾) warmer than usual for a long time. This may have led to stronger hurricanes along the Gulf Coast in the following years. In addition, El Niños release heat stored in the ocean back into the atmosphere. A strong El Niño, together with climate change, could make 2026 or 2027 the hottest year ever.
16. The picture on the right shows the average ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific from January 2017 to December 2025. The strongest El Niño during this period took place ________.
A. from 2018 to 2019 B. from 2020 to 2021 C. from 2023 to 2024 D. from 2024 to 2025
17. According to the article, during the first three months of this year, the United States was quite ________.
A. dry B. wet C. cold D. warm
18. Which paragraph(s) is/are about the effects of El Niños?
A. Paragraph 6. B. Paragraphs 3-6. C. Paragraphs 4-5. D. Paragraphs 5-6.
19. According to the article, during a strong El Niño, the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic may be ________.
A. close to normal B. more than usual C. fewer than usual D. quite unpredictable
20. This article is most likely taken from the “________” section of a student magazine.
① Science ② Technology ③ World News ④ National News
A. ① or ③ B. ① or ④ C. ② or ③ D. ② or ④
16. C 17. A 18. D 19. C 20. A
第三段明确提到“From January to March, the United States had its driest start to a year on record”,即美国前三个月非常干燥。
第五段指出“A strong El Niño can mean a quieter hurricane season in the Atlantic”,“quieter”意为飓风更少(fewer than usual)。
Technology(技术)和National News(国内新闻)与主题不符。

One day, my friend Mareya called. “Nora, I will travel to Hawaii. There will be beaches, sandcastles...” she said. Her words made me have a strange feeling. I was happy for her but envied (嫉妒) her a little. “Oh, well,” I thought, “I will have a hiking trip with Olivia. That will also be very interesting.”
Later that day, I learned Olivia would visit her uncle’s new beach house. So we had to put off our hiking trip. “I’m really sorry. But you understand, right?” she said. “Oh, sure,” I said. I tried to push the corners of my mouth into a smile, but inside, my heart was sinking.
At that time, I saw Mrs. Daisy in her garden. I offered to help her water the flowers in the hope of taking my mind off unpleasant feelings. Watering the flowers made me feel good but I still couldn’t stop wishing I could also be on holiday with my friends.
“Be careful!” Mrs. Daisy said. “That is a harmful plant. I’ll get it out of here.” Suddenly, I realized what I was watering. Mrs. Daisy was aware of my bad mood, smiled at me and said, “Dear Nora, plants or feelings, we should watch what we’re watering, right? If we nourish the harmful plants or bad feelings, then that’s what we have. But if we try to nourish the beautiful flowers or good feelings, then that’s what we get.” “I guess that makes sense,” I said, “but I fail to tell my mind to stop being sad.” “Just let yourself feel all of your feelings,” she said, “but after a while, you can try feeding your mind with happier thoughts. Talk to a friend, go for a run or just enjoy the beauty of a flower.”

B
The world’s oldest musical instruments are more than 40,000 years old. For thousands of years, humans have been making music for pleasure and to express themselves.
Recently, there has been a rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create music. AI makes music by analyzing (分析) many different songs, learning patterns and details, and then mixing pieces together in creative ways. Some AI music has become so popular that it has been shared widely online.
However, some people think using AI to create music isn’t truly original (原创的) or creative because it makes songs out of old music. What do you think? Is AI bad for creativity?
Yes—AI music isn’t ① ________.
Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician. If companies can use AI to produce popular music that makes lots of money from people buying and listening to it, it could put musicians out of work. If musicians can’t earn money from music, there will be far fewer of them creating new songs. Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn’t the same experience as listening to human-made music. When musicians create songs, they put real feelings and experiences into their work, which builds a deep connection with listeners through their music. Music produced by AI isn’t truly original, as it simply takes pieces from songs that have already been published. Therefore, it cannot be considered creative
No—AI can help ② ________ new ideas.
When people turn on their radio or headphones and a great new song comes on, it makes them feel good. A catchy (悦耳的) tune (曲调) brings people together to sing and dance. If people are enjoying music, who cares whether it was made by a human or a machine? Music makers already use computers, which help to perfect sound and mix different parts of a song. Like computers, AI can also help come up with new thoughts. It won’t replace musicians but they can work with it. Building on music created by AI could save time. It could allow lots more music to be produced and it could lead to new and special styles of music. AI could create exciting tunes that humans could never have dreamed of.

“Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn’t the same experience as listening to human-made music.” Anyway“无论如何、总之”;listening to music…动名词短语作主语;that was made by a computer定语从句,修饰music,意为“电脑生成的音乐”; be made by“由……制作;isn’t the same…as …“和……不同”;human-made“人工制作的”。
【42题详解】
①处位于“Yes”观点段的标题。根据文章第4段“Therefore, it cannot be considered creative”可推知结论,该段主要论述AI音乐缺乏创造性,标题应总结此观点。 根据文章第5段“Like computers, AI can also help come up with new thoughts.”
②处对应文章第1段“For thousands of years, humans have been making music…”,“thousands of years”意味着悠久的历史。
④处对应文章第4段“Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician.”。故填cheaper。
⑤处对应文章第4段“...builds a deep connection with listeners...”。故填connection。
⑥处对应文章第4段“Therefore, it cannot be considered creative”,说明旧音乐拼凑阻碍了创造性,“prevent...from”为固定搭配。故填prevent。
⑦处对应文章第5段“Music makers already use computers...AI can also help...”,AI在此处作为一种辅助工具。
No, I don’t think so. Human musicians put real feelings into music, creating a deep connection with listeners that AI cannot truly replace.
I would use AI to generate some melody ideas first. Then I would choose the best one and add my own lyrics and feelings to make it special.

例文
Low-carbon Life Starts with Us
Last week, our school did a survey on students’ low-carbon habits. Here are the results. 60% of the students save water and electricity. 35% reuse paper and old things. 25% walk or ride bikes to school. However, 15% don’t do anything about it.
As for me, I always turn off the lights when I leave the room. Also, I usually ride a bike to school instead of taking a car.
Since some students do nothing about it, we should take action right now. We’d better use cloth bags when shopping. What’s more, everyone should try to recycle waste. Let’s work together to make our earth greener!

A. ① or ③ B. ① or ④ C. ② or ③ D. ② or ④

I thought Mrs. Daisy’s advice was worth trying. ___________.
