For years I walked the streets of London wearing noise-canceling headphones, absorbed in playlists, podcasts or long voice notes, a million miles away from wherever I physically was.
One damp January evening, I was walking home, headphones out of power in my bag, when I noticed a small figure fall down on the pavement with her eyes closed. I might not have noticed her if I had been in my own world, fixated on what was playing in my ears. I asked her name. No response. Worse, she didn’t seem to be breathing. My mind raced back to my first-aid class, but I drew a blank, afraid of getting it wrong. I dialed 999. The call handler talked me through it: lie her down, press her chest to a count, keep going. To my relief, the stranger took a breath. After the medical workers arrived, I quietly left.
After that night, I resolved to be more aware of the happenings around me. Wearing headphones made me feel as if I was wrapped in sound: it could be comforting, but the world was dulled and separate.
So, off they came.
Suddenly, I awakened to all that had long escaped my notice. A noise in the grass turned out to be a hedgehog fighting a blackbird — I felt as if I’d entered a secret world. A thunderous crack alerted me to a woodpecker drilling holes in a tree near my local park. Plus, I’m more open to talking to strangers now. It’s easier to start a conversation when my first response isn’t “What?” as I peel off my headphones.
Still, it helps to have the option to zone out. I refuse to go for a run without loud Cuban music in my ears to force my trainers to hit the ground with the beat. There’s no way I’m getting on an aeroplane without listening to an audio book.
As for that January night, I’ll never know what happened to the stranger, but I’m glad I was paying attention.

Our solar system is peppered with large rocks, called asteroids. If a big asteroid strikes Earth, there are many possible outcomes. The space rock could drop into the ocean and not harm anyone. Or it could wipe out a city. People have a hard time understanding the chances of an asteroid strike. So a research team calculated the likelihood and compared it with other events — with some surprising results.
“A large or medium asteroid hitting Earth would be noticed worldwide,” says Carrie Nugent, a planetary scientist at Olin College. While killer asteroids have hit before, such as the one that finished off the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, Nugent says a similar situation is not expected to occur in the future. “We try to put this event, which is actually a preventable event, in context with other preventable events,” she adds.
Using a computer program, Nugent and her team modeled a group of asteroids similar to real near-Earth objects (NEOs). They fed them into a program called JPL Horizons. Anyone can use that program to look up predicted locations for objects in the solar system. For this project, her team determined whether each modeled asteroid would cross paths with Earth.
That allowed the team to estimate the frequency of asteroids bigger than 140 meters across, which is around the size of a large ship, Nugent says. An asteroid of this size would hit Earth roughly every 11,000 years.
However, that number is still hard to understand. So Nugent compared the chances of an asteroid hitting Earth with other events that people may experience as follows.
One-In-X Chance Event Happens to an Individual, or the Planet, Over a Human Lifetime
Books and movies often describe asteroid run-ins as unstoppable events. “The truth is actually entirely the opposite,” she says. NASA’s DART Mission in 2022 hit an asteroid that wasn’t in danger of hitting Earth. The test changed the asteroid’s path. This showed that people might be able to avoid such a crash one day. So, it’s important to do research, such as sky surveys, that locate these objects.
28. According to paragraph 2, what does Nugent think of asteroids striking Earth?
A. It’s hard to predict it. B. It’s urgent to prevent it.
C. There’s no need to worry about it. D. There’ll be disastrous outcomes.
29. What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Computer modeling. B. Frequency estimate.
C. System operation. D. Project assessment.
30. Which of the following events is least likely to happen?
A. Coyote attack. B. Elephant attack.
C. Carbon monoxide poisoning. D. Asteroid impact.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To introduce various asteroid research methods.
B. To applaud NASA’s asteroid research findings.
C. To draw media attention to asteroid research.
D. To stress the importance of asteroid research.

The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish.
“We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish’,” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature.
The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted (扰乱), which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a microcontroller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices.
A special biogel (生物凝胶) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of microchannels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it cosy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing.
The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin.
32. The first paragraph aims to show __________.
A. the special ability of African fish
B. the inspiration for a new invention
C. the big challenge of locating objects
D. the reason for developing a sensor
33. What is the correct order of the system’s working procedures?
a. The transmitter creates an electric field.
b. A unit computes the position of the target.
c. The controller sends the activating signal.
d. The receiver detects the change of electric signals.
e. The electric field is disrupted by an approaching object.
A. c-a-e-d-b. B. c-a-d-e-b.
C. a-c-e-d-b. D. a-e-c-d-b.
34. What is an advantage of the new sensor system?
A. Its sensitivity to different stimulations.
B. Its adaptation to environmental changes.
C. Its efficiency in achieving 3D positioning.
D. Its speed in data collection and processing.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Machine Detective “Wears” Flexible E-skin
B. Bio-inspired Sensor “Feels” Without Touching
C. E-Skin Sensor: The Future of Machine Learning
D. Electric Fields: The Frontier of Object Detection

Emotions shape our lives in different ways. To grow and be better than before, developing emotional intelligence can make you stand out from the crowd. ____36____
It is common that we deflect (转移) our feelings and make others feel guilty, which can result in heated arguments and even guilt trips. But it’s essential to understand a fundamental principle: Just as others are not accountable for your emotions, you are not responsible for how others feel. ____37____ For example, replace “You hurt me” with “I feel hurt.” This expresses your feelings without blame, promoting healthier communication and emotional ownership.
When emotions run high, self-control becomes vital. ____38____ in heated moments, focus first on calming yourself rather than reacting without thinking. By carefully choosing your words and actions, you can prevent unnecessary damage to your relationships and demonstrate real maturity.
____39____ Question your initial thoughts before reacting and reflect on whether your own behavior has contributed to the issue. This practice helps you move beyond automatic reactions and respond more thoughtfully, reducing conflicts. If you make a mistake, take full responsibility for your actions and offer a sincere apology, which will build trust and shows strength instead of weakness. Taking ownership in this way is a cornerstone of emotional growth and integrity.
Finally, it is true that you are known by the company you keep. If you are surrounded by happy and motivated people, you will always be happy. If you are surrounded by negative people that only bring others down, then you will always feel bitter. In order to be emotionally intelligent, you must have a good and supporting company by your side. ____40____ Whenever you feel something like that, cut ties with them immediately.
A. Clear communication is always needed.
B. Try to change others’ perspectives patiently.
C. So own your feelings without projecting them.
D. Let’s explore how to become emotionally mature.
E. Avoid quick decisions when emotionally charged.
F. Self-reflection is equally important on this journey.
G. Keep away from those who emotionally control others.

As soon as the chilly winds winter gave way to spring, Sarah, Tom, Mia and I would find ourselves in our community garden. Armed with a spade (铲子), seed packets, gardening gloves and the secret smiles that had slept through the long winter, we got to work side by side. Yet this year, the gentle breeze failed to ease the anxiety in my heart. My father’s job transfer meant leaving behind the familiar streets, saying goodbye to my friends and parting with the Green Ark (方舟), the community garden shaped by our love and labor.
On the day of our departure, a soft rain fell. With misty eyes, we said our goodbyes. Sarah knew every plant by heart; Tom built wooden supports with steady hands; Mia painted flower beds with color and patience; I loved watching seedlings (幼苗) break through the soil. We had planned an autumn exhibition, but before summer arrived, I was gone. “There will be gardens where you’re going,” Sarah said, tears clouding her eyes. Yes — but none could replace the land we had tended together.
In my new community, people passed one another with few greetings exchanged. Doors closed, conversations were brief and neighbors remained strangers. There was little sense of shared space or shared care. So did the garden. Weeds claimed the paths, weathered tools piled in the corner, and the roses bent low in the wind, lonely and tired. One evening, unable to bear the garden, I called Sarah and poured out my loss.
Before long, she came to see me, and we met in the garden of my community. Under the mild afternoon sun, we embraced, laughing in surprise. Then came a familiar sound — the click of tools, the sound of big scissors. I turned to see Tom and Mia standing there, as if no time had passed.

Initially, I used the online platform as a diary, something to look back on, giving me a sense of achievement and keeping me motivated and moving forward. As time went by, other gardeners and like minded people began to follow my progress, too. I know you grow lots of fruit on your land, which would you recommend to beginners as the best to grow? Strawberries would be a good choice. They produce a lot of fruit in their first season. That's cool. Well, do you have plans to try new or any particular crops next year? Next season, I will be adding some pair trees to the fruit area. I will be adding more urbs, which I can use in the kitchen. And after a couple of years of failure, I will try growing carrots again. What advice would you offer someone thinking of doing kitchen gardening? Have a plan of what you want your kitchen garden to look like. Don't be too discouraged if things don't go according to plan. Learn from your mistakes and move on. There is always next season. So mary, your kitchen garden looks excEllent. What made you turn to social media to record your vegetable growing?
24. Why was the author able to notice the woman’s unusual condition?
A. He heard a sound of an ambulance.
B. He had rich first-aid expertise.
C. His headphones happened to be dead.
D. His mind was wandering from music.
25. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in paragraph 4?
A. The headphones. B. The noises.
C. The happenings. D. The medical workers.
26. What is the author’s current view on using headphones?
A. It is a stylish trend. B. It is a conscious choice.
C. It is a regular routine. D. It is a habitual preference.
27. What message does the text try to convey?
A. Music speaks.
B. Alertness counts.
C. Kindness never fades.
D. To tune out is to tune in.
C 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据第二段“One damp January evening, I was walking home, headphones out of power in my bag, when I noticed a small figure fall down on the pavement with her eyes closed. (一月一个潮湿的夜晚,我步行回家,包里的耳机早已没电,就在这时,我看到一个小小的身影双眼紧闭,摔倒在人行道上。)”可知,作者能够察觉到这位女士的异常状况是因为他的耳机碰巧没电了。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“Wearing headphones made me feel as if I was wrapped in sound: it could be comforting, but the world was dulled and separate. (戴着耳机,我仿佛被声音层层包裹:这或许能带来慰藉,却也让周遭世界变得模糊疏离、格格不入。)”可知,上文核心讲述戴耳机的弊端,第四段承接上文,表达“所以我摘掉了耳机”。由此可知,they指代上文的headphones。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Still, it helps to have the option to zone out. I refuse to go for a run without loud Cuban music in my ears to force my trainers to hit the ground with the beat. There’s no way I’m getting on an aeroplane without listening to an audio book.
C
C 29. A 30. A 31. D
根据第二段“While killer asteroids have hit before, such as the one that finished off the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, Nugent says a similar situation is not expected to occur in the future.(虽然致命的小行星以前曾撞击过地球,比如6600万年前导致恐龙灭绝的那颗,但Nugent表示,未来预计不会发生类似的情况)”可推知,Nugent认为未来不太可能发生类似恐龙灭绝那样的小行星撞击事件,因此人们不必过于担心。
根据第三段“Using a computer program, Nugent and her team modeled a group of asteroids similar to real near-Earth objects (NEOs). They fed them into a program called JPL Horizons. Anyone can use that program to look up predicted locations for objects in the solar system. For this project, her team determined whether each modeled asteroid would cross paths with Earth.(利用计算机程序,Nugent及其团队构建了一组与真实近地天体(NEO)类似的小行星模型。他们将这些模型输入名为“JPL Horizons”的程序中。任何人都可以使用该程序来查询太阳系中物体的预计位置。在此次项目中,她的团队确定了每颗模型小行星是否会与地球相撞)”及第四段“That allowed the team to estimate the frequency of asteroids bigger than 140 meters across, which is around the size of a large ship, Nugent says. (Nugent说,这使得研究团队能够估算出直径超过140米(相当于一艘大型船只的大小)的小行星出现的频率)”可推知,That指代的是前文提到的“computer modeling (计算机模拟)”这一过程,正是通过计算机模拟,团队才能估算小行星撞击的频率。故选A。
Coyote attack (土狼袭击)1 in 1,000,000;B. Elephant attack (大象袭击)1 in 10,000;C. Carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒)1 in 100;D. Asteroid impact (小行星撞击)1 in 1,000。 故选A。
根据最后一段“Books and movies often describe asteroid run-ins as unstoppable events. “The truth is actually entirely the opposite,” she says. NASA’s DART Mission in 2022 hit an asteroid that wasn’t in danger of hitting Earth. The test changed the asteroid’s path. This showed that people might be able to avoid such a crash one day. So, it’s important to do research, such as sky surveys, that locate these objects.(书籍和电影常常将小行星碰撞事件描述为无法阻止的灾难性事件。但她表示:“事实恰恰相反。”美国宇航局2022年的DART任务击中了一颗没有撞击地球危险的小行星。这次测试改变了这颗小行星的轨道。这表明,或许有一天人类能够避免此类碰撞。因此,开展研究工作,比如进行天空普查,以定位这些天体,是非常重要的)”可推知,作者写最后一段的目的是强调小行星研究的重要性。故选D。
D

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Pressing a spade into my hand, Sarah led us into action.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing the well-tended garden, I decided to hold an exhibition in the community.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Pressing a spade into my hand, Sarah led us into action. We cleared the overgrown weeds first. Then Tom repaired the wooden supports while Mia painted the weathered garden fence with a fresh coat of soft green. I hesitated for only a moment before digging in. As we worked, laughter and stories flowed, just as we had in the Green Ark. The tightness in my chest slowly eased. Neighbors passing by paused, some even stepping in to help, their initial caution melting into curiosity and then warmth. By sunset, the garden had shed its untended look, glowing with life and the promise of new blooms.
Seeing the well-tended garden, I decided to hold an exhibition in the community. On the exhibition day, flowers bloomed and people gathered, talking and smiling. To my delight, Sarah, Tom, and Mia joined us as we set up a display of memories from the Green Ark reborn in this community. The garden, once a place of loneliness, became a new ark of connection. Neighbors who once passed silently stopped to chat, and doors that once closed remained open. I was gifted with the realization that it was more than a garden. It was a shared space, alive with care, friendship and a sense of belonging that would last far beyond the season.
