故选A。
故选A。

A“But something remarkable happened.” 故选A。
F“To find out, we surveyed over 6,000 knowledge workers...”
G“Among those superteams, the secret to high performance looked remarkably similar.”
C“Its rapid rise over the past few years is not an accident.”
E“Any team can develop them, whether in basketball, business, or beyond.”

解析:空格前句提出“punctuation is less a fixed rule than a personal tool to convey my unique voice”(punctuation是表达个人声音的工具),空格后句具体阐述“I tend to use far fewer commas”(我倾向于使用少得多的逗号),即作者的“strong preferences”。选项B“I also have my own strong preferences”(我也有自己强烈的偏好)承上启下,“also”一词将个人偏好与前半部分的个人工具论紧密衔接,自然引出下文的具体偏好。
解析:空格后句出现“He is deeply attached to it”(他对它情有独钟)和“the semicolon(分号)”,其中“He”和“it”均未有先行词,因此空格处必须引出“He”所指代的人物以及“it”所指代的事物。选项D“My father is a devoted lover of the semicolon”(我父亲是分号的忠实爱好者)完美引入父亲和分号这两个核心信息,使后文“He”指代“My father”、“it”指代“semicolon”逻辑清晰。
解析:空格前句说父亲的文章满是分号,节奏沉重沉闷;空格后句说“I would often struggle to stay focused after just a few paragraphs”(我常常读几段后就难以保持专注)。选项C“He used to write me a letter every week”(他过去每周给我写一封信)为作者的阅读体验提供了具体的情景支撑——正是因为父亲常写信,作者才有机会反复经历这种沉闷的阅读过程,使后文“reading process”的表述合情合理。
解析:空格前句说“I once insisted on strict punctuation even in text messages”(我曾经连发短信都坚持严格标点),并说“I hated to appear careless”(我讨厌显得马虎);空格后句说“After all, many people just want to communicate efficiently”(毕竟许多人只想高效沟通),语义由“坚持”转向“理解他人做法”,存在明显的转折。选项G“However, I gradually learned to let go of this habit”(然而,我逐渐学会了放下这个习惯)以“However”实现转折,由曾经的坚持过渡到后来的放下,并自然衔接后文对放下的原因解释。
在短信中传递截然不同的情绪,空格后总结“punctuation carries hidden emotions and reshapes how messages are received”(punctuation承载隐藏情绪,重塑信息接收方式)。选项F“We should therefore use punctuation wisely online”(因此我们在线上应明智地使用punctuation)以“therefore”引出基于前文例子的实践性结论,起归纳作用,并与后文深层原因呼应。

故选A。

D“Easier said than done though, right?”(不过说起来容易做起来难,对吧?)
C“Everyone messes up at some point”(每个人都有搞砸的时候)与此完全吻合,且能通过“this shared experience”形成指代衔接。
B“Let go of guilt and shame.”(放下内疚与羞耻)准确概括了该段主旨。
G“Journaling can be a useful tool for this.”(写日记对此是个有用的工具)中的“this”指代上文的识别教训,“Journaling”直接对应下文的“Write about...”。

E“Cross-training lets your body see all of those different movements each week.”具体说明交叉训练能满足这种需求,并为下一段“This is especially true for children”做铺垫。
中的“They”恰好指代“children who don’t specialize”,语义连贯。故选A。
D“But adults and even professional athletes need to vary their routines, too.”
B“This is a period of time when progress in your favored sport stops”解释了该效应即运动进步停滞期;空后“That’s because...”

解析:空前说父亲一生有很多爱好,空后提到“He loved talking about them to anyone who would listen.”,句中的“them”显然指代某种爱好。选项E“Collecting coins was one of his greatest interests.”
A“He passed the habit on to me.” 故选A。
F“It specifically involved a 1928 coin—the year he was born.”
C“To me, it was my father handing me the coin.”用“To me”鲜明突出作者的主观感受,与前面的“Some might call it…”
B“I figured he wouldn’t think any more of it.”

B“It invites them to create their own china.”中,It指代The city, them指代visitors,自然地完成了从“成品”到“自制体验”的过渡。
A“The process takes patience and focus.” 故选A。
F“But a self-made piece is heavy with unique memories.”
G“The experience helps build a living link to cultural roots”高度概括了该段大意,作为主题句引领全段。
E“They meet people’s desire for hands-on experiences.”

解析:空前一句提到“It happens to the best of us.”,空后则说“For them, reading isn’t just about...”,这意味着空白处需要引出“them”所指代的对象。选项E“But imagine students who are just learning to read.”
F“Think of questioning techniques as a mental workout for the brain.”
C“Of course, all questions aren’t created equal.”
解析:空前列举了不同类型的问题,空后则说“But together, they create a rich, engaging reading experience...”,用“But together”引出转折,强调不同类型的问题共同构成完整的阅读体验。选项A“Each type serves a different purpose.” 故选A。
解析:空前一句说“reading is more than just recognizing words.”,强调阅读不仅仅是认字。选项B“It’s about making sense of those words.”

C“Still, the rewards far outweigh the challenges.”(尽管如此,回报远大于挑战)用“Still”实现转折,将前文的负面清单与后文的解决方案自然衔接。
E“You’ll meet people with whom you have at least one thing in common.”(你会遇到至少与你有共同点的人)直接点明“共同点”,与后文的“passionate fans”以及“interact with people”构成清晰的因果链条。
G“You might emerge with more knowledge, a handmade souvenir, and a new friend or two.”(你可能会带着更多知识、一件手工作品和一两个新朋友出来)中,“新朋友”直接引出后文的“人际互动”,知识与手工作品则是课堂的自然成果,起到了承上启下的作用。
选项B“Join a small group tour.”(参加一个小型团体游)高度浓缩了“organised group of travelers”“guide and driver”这些关键信息,精准概括段落主旨。
F“If you want to connect with others, make sure you’re sending the right messages.”(如果你想和人建立联系,就要确保发出正确的信号)中,“sending the right messages”恰好概括了后面所有做法的共同本质——通过行动释放可接近、愿交流的信号。

C“But setting boundaries can be challenging.”
D“You can start small, build them up slowly, and then re-evaluate.”
B“Set boundaries early in new relationships.”

故选A。

解析:空格后句子以“It acts as a constant background noise...” 故选A。
F“By contrast, ‘not me’ items belong to past selves that no longer fit.”
G“If it doesn’t fit, you must choose your favorites and throw away the rest.”(如果装不下,就必须挑出最喜欢的,扔掉剩下的)直接承接“容器”这一比喻,说明如何处理超出容器容量的物品。后文“Furthermore, if you cannot find twenty minutes a week...”
B“Acknowledging these feelings is essential for relief.”(承认这些感受是解脱的关键)中的“these feelings”恰指这种因未竟意图而产生的情绪。

故选A。

In a world crazy about grades and rankings, it’s easy to define our worth by external outcomes. However, psychologist Carol Dweck’s concept of “mindset” offers a different path. She distinguishes between a fixed mindset (the belief that our intelligence is stable) and a growth mindset (the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work). _____36_____ They shape our relationship with challenges and effort.
So, how does this play out in daily life? The answer lies in how we handle difficulties. Those with a fixed mindset tend to avoid challenges, fearing that failure might expose a lack of intelligence. _____37_____ They understand that struggle is not a sign of weakness but an essential part of mastering something new. For them, effort is what actually strengthens their abilities.
This perspective is backed by neuroscience. _____38_____ When we step out of our comfort zone and tackle difficult problems, our brain forms new neural connections. This process, known as neuroplasticity, proves that we can literally make ourselves smarter through learning and practice.
How can we develop this mindset? Start by listening to your inner voice. When you think, “I can’t do this,” add one simple word: “yet”. _____39_____ It transforms a statement of limitation into a promise of future potential. This small shift in self-talk can be the first step toward embracing lifelong growth.
Ultimately, a growth mindset frees us from the need for constant confirmation. It allows us to see setbacks not as judgments of our worth, but as valuable feedback. _____40_____ We begin to value the process of learning itself, finding joy in the journey of improvement rather than just the final destination.
A. This tiny word implies that learning is a gradual process.
B. However, the other group of people do exactly the opposite.
C. There is a scientific explanation for why this mindset works.
D. These two mindsets fundamentally alter how we view ourselves.
E. They firmly believe that true potential is unknown and achievable.
F. Therefore, we should avoid difficult tasks to protect our self-esteem.
G. It also helps us separate our core identity from the outcomes we experience.

William Shakespeare may have written that “all the world’s a stage”, but sadly theaters witness a decline in school visits due to budget pressures. _____36_____
The most obvious benefit is academic. Students watching a live play outperform those seeing the same play as a film adaptation on knowledge of content and vocabulary. _____37_____ When seeing it brought to life, they can build a thorough understanding in discussing the staging and interpretations of stage directions.
Live theater also teaches how to develop relationships. People’s heart rates synchronize(同步)in a theater audience. This is a behavior that has been shown to enhance social bonding. _____38_____ In fact, the common heightened emotion of watching a play also teaches students that it’s ok to feel and express emotions such as sadness.
_____39_____ Schools really welcome using theater and plays to open up difficult discussions where students can explore diverse perspectives and accept others with an open mind. As a result, students are more likely to accept statements such as “I think people can have different opinions about the same thing”.
Finally, theater helps open students’ eyes up to the range of jobs available within the industry. _____40_____ There are many backstage roles, which often don’t become obvious until you experience a live performance.
Given these significant benefits—academic, emotional, social, and occupational—schools should guarantee that students never miss out on these transformative experiences.
A. Plays don’t just require actors.
B. Live theater makes class discussion intolerable.
C. The actual journey to the theater also boosts social tolerance.
D. A synchronized audience is perfect for building social tolerance.
E. The shared experience of something moving helps people connect.
F. Yet, live theater experiences remain vital for students’ development.
G. For those studying English plays, a text of a play is merely a blueprint.

In the spring of 2022, after a depressing 58-loss season, the Oklahoma City Thunder sat near the bottom of the NBA standings. _____36_____ In just three seasons it rocketed from the bottom to the top of the league. How does a team improve so quickly? That question isn’t just about basketball. It’s about how any group can learn, adapt, and succeed in an age of accelerated change.
During the past few years, my colleagues and I have been investigating a question: What do the best teams do differently? _____37_____ And we collected detailed data on how their teams set priorities, make decisions, and cooperate. To identify members of high-performing teams, we had workers rate their team’s effectiveness and industry performance. Those rated highest were called “superteams”.
_____38_____ Superteams share three key strengths. Firstly, they get more done by managing time, energy, and attention more efficiently. Secondly, their members actively make one another better. Thirdly, they’re constantly building new skills and improving over time.
It is that last strength that the Thunder has clearly mastered. _____39_____ It’s part of a pattern that has defined the organization since it moved to Oklahoma City in 2008. After its arrival, the team entered a full rebuild, putting long- term progress before instant results. Yet in just four seasons it reached the NBA Finals, in 2012.
The Thunder’s story is a reminder that success grows from the pursuit of improvement, the decisive leaders who spot and solve problems, and the motivated teams that cooperate well. Those are the habits that turn good teams into superteams. _____40_____
A. But something remarkable happened.
B. They work together towards the same goal.
C. Its rapid rise over the past few years is not an accident.
D. We found that superteam leaders are more likely to support employees.
E. Any team can develop them, whether in basketball, business, or beyond.
F. To find out, we surveyed over 6,000 knowledge workers across various industries.

Punctuation(标点符号)has never been a mere formality to me. It shapes the flow of a text. guiding readers to pause or rush, to reflect or move on. _____36_____ I tend to use far fewer commas(逗号)than traditional textbooks recommend, for I prefer a sharp and energetic tone over complex, twisting sentences. To me, punctuation is less a fixed rule than a personal tool to convey my unique voice.
_____37_____ He is deeply attached to it, while I almost always choose the long dash to connect ideas. Though they serve similar functions, the two marks create completely different reading experiences. He considers the semicolon(分号)a sign of formality and elegance, whereas I see the dash as more casual and closer to real speech.
A dash feels like a gentle reminder in conversation. A semicolon, by contrast, gives writing a dated, literary air typical of 19th-century prose(白话文). My father’s writing is packed with semicolons, resulting in a heavy, dull rhythm. _____38_____ I would often struggle to stay focused after just a few paragraphs. I respected his carefulness but could not bear the tiring reading process.
I once insisted on strict punctuation even in text messages, capitalizing properly and never missing a single mark. It was troublesome, but I hated to appear careless. _____39_____ After all, many people just want to communicate efficiently and effortlessly.
Text messages have their own unwritten punctuation rules. A simple “no” carries basic information, but a capitalized “No.” with a full stop can sound cold or annoyed. _____40_____ In casual communication, punctuation carries hidden emotions and reshapes how messages are received.
A. He has a natural sense of rhythm.
B. I also have my own strong preferences.
C. He used to write me a letter every week.
D. My father is a devoted lover of the semicolon.
B. Some people dislike punctuation in daily chats.

In Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, he announced the emergence of the daffodil(水仙花)as the telling sign that we had reached “the sweet o’ the year,” that the winds of March’s beauty had arrived, and that a brighter season had begun.
In choosing daffodils, the classic yellow type remains a popular choice. However, there are more elegant varieties to pepper throughout your borders, including “Paperwhite” and “Moonlight Sensation”. _____36_____ Fortunately, planting and growing daffodils is a simple task that will gain rich springtime rewards.
Planting daffodil bulbs(球茎)requires you to think ahead. The ideal planting time is at the beginning of autumn, before the weather becomes too cold. _____37_____ Late October to November is perfect for regions of mild climates. Additionally, soil with good drainage(排水)is a must, as bulbs won’t produce a wonderful spring display if they sit in water for a long time. _____38_____ What’s more, plant your daffodil bulbs at a depth that is roughly 3 times the bulb’s height, and allow 4-6 inches between them. _____39_____ Otherwise, your daffodils would look unnatural.

This is especially true for children. Sports medicine experts have long encouraged kids to play multiple sports and not to specialize in one at a young age. A lot of data on the topic shows children who specialize in a sport when young have an increased risk of injury. _____38 _____They are less bored with exercise and enjoy greater sports achievements when they are older.
_____39_____ Voos said football players at training camp might do a lot of conditioning one day, then work on flexibility and balance the next, then move onto strength training, all of which is intermixed with playing football. “So even at the highest levels, our athletes are exposing their bodies to different motions,” Voos said.
Another plus to shaking things up with your exercise routine, especially if you prefer one activity, is that it helps prevent the plateau(高原)effect. _____40_____ That’s because your body has become very efficient at the movements. To overcome such pauses, you need to change your movement routine and stimulate your body in different ways.
While changing up your exercise is important for many reasons, experts don’t have specific recommendations for how many different exercises you need to do each week or month to achieve the most benefit. But it’s important to work all of your muscle groups each week, if possible, to strengthen them all
A. However, the children who don’t specialize tend to be healthier
B. This is a period of time when progress in your favored sport stops
C. They also note that varying your exercises can prevent overuse injuries.
D. But adults and even professional athletes need to vary their routines, too.
E. Cross-training lets your body see all of those different movements each week.
E. So they say even simple exercises done at work or home are beneficial, too.
G. Those who have the largest amount in their physical activity live the longest.

As a child growing up there are many different paths available to navigate one’s way through adolescence into adulthood. I was fortunate to have had the guidance of my father, who had many hobbies in his life. ______36______ He loved talking about them to anyone who would listen.
______37______ I was always looking for pennies—whether given as change or picked up off the ground—and checking to see if they were “Wheaties,” pennies made from 1909 to 1958. Some Lincoln Wheat Cents were quite valuable, but for me, the real joy was the search itself.
My father passed away last week. Although he will be missed, there is no sadness in his passing. He lived nearly 97 years of a full and meaningful life. During his final moments, I whispered in his ear that I needed a sign after he left us. ______38______
The next day, my sister and I were going through his old clothes when something fell out and hit the floor—it was a 1928 Wheat penny. There was no way to know how long it had been there. Some might call it a coincidence. ______39______ The fact that it was also a Wheat penny proved what I already knew—it was him. It could have easily been put aside with the clothes, but it found its way to me.
Later, I was talking to my neighbor and told him the story. ______40______ However, a few days later, he came over with a bag of pennies he had. Inside it, he found two more 1928 Wheat pennies—one for each of my sisters. Our father is no longer with us, but he is still here.
A. He passed the habit on to me.
B. I figured he wouldn’t think any more of it.
C. To me, it was my father handing me the coin.
D. Old coins carried the quiet weight of the past.
E. Collecting coins was one of his greatest interests.

In Jingdezhen, known as China’s capital of porcelain, a quiet change is taking place. The city now offers visitors more than just finished porcelain products. _____36_____
The experience follows a clear process guided by skilled artisans. Visitors first roll the clay to remove the air inside and make it soft. Then, at a turntable, they shape the material with their hands and cups, bowls or small vases slowly take form. _____37_____ After shaping, they add colors or words to the work, which is then fired in a kiln(瓷窑). Days later, it is mailed to their home, bringing a pleasant surprise.
This kind of experience differs greatly from buying a finished product. A store product may be perfect. It offers little emotional connection, though. _____38_____ Every small imperfection—an uneven edge or a fingerprint—tells a story. The waiting time adds meaning. When the package finally arrives, opening it feels like meeting an old friend. Pride and joy come from the whole-hearted dedication.
_____39_____ During the process, local artisans share knowledge of traditional techniques. Ancient skills become real and touchable. Visitors learn about the seventy-two steps of porcelain making, gaining a deep insight into this time-honored Chinese craft.
Today, pottery workshops have grown into a popular highlight of Jingdezhen’s cultural tourism. _____40_____ More importantly, they connect visitors to tradition in a meaningful way.
A. The process takes patience and focus.
B. It invites them to create their own china.
C. It also integrates tradition into technology.

Walking around university campuses day and night, students can easily see glowing blue emergency phones spread over every functional area. These devices can quickly connect users to emergency help. _____36_____ Universities carry out various practical safety measures to build a reliable safety barrier for teachers and students on campus.
Most young students in lower grades say they can feel a strong sense of safety on campus all the time. They mention that they can get timely help right away if they run into sudden risks or unexpected troubles on the way to classrooms and dorm buildings. Standard campus layout and complete supporting safety facilities greatly reduce students’ worries about daily personal safety. _____37_____
However, safety equipment arranged by schools alone cannot achieve full protection around the clock.
_____38_____ Many students will kindly remind their peers to avoid quiet, dimly-lit lonely paths when walking back late at night. They look out for one another during after-school outdoor activities and choose to move in groups instead of walking alone after dark.
_____39_____ Campus safety risks have staved at a very low level. Personal safety accidents and public property loss rarely take place on campus all year round. The data further indicates that the combination of school management and student caution is highly effective.
In a word, campus safety relies on joint efforts. _____40_____ Only with close cooperation can people keep the campus stable, orderly and safe for daily study and peaceful-life.
A. While challenges remain, current approaches show promising results.

Gag gifts are usually inexpensive novelty items intended to get a laugh. They’re often casual buys when something funny instantly brings a friend or family member to mind. Most gag gifts are not very useful. ______36______ You don’t need a special event to give someone a gag gift.
______37______ The faces of politicians are often found on gag gifts, along with political jokes. Other common designs include cartoon characters, famous funny sayings, and slightly rude jokes. Children often like gag gifts that double as tricks. Some classic examples are an innocent-looking pillow and whoopee cushion. These items have all brought laughs for generations.
When to give gag gifts? They can be given when a gift is expected but the recipient is only a nodding acquaintance(泛泛之交). For example, at an office party for an employee who is leaving, people may be expected to bring a small present even if they don’t know the person well. In this case, a coffee cup with a funny saying works well. ______38______ This adds joy to an otherwise ordinary drinking cup.
When giving a gag gift, the giver should make sure the gag will not hurt the recipient’s feelings. ______39______ However, gags highlighting a person’s shortcomings are not a good idea. They may make the person feel uncomfortable. For example, a baldhead cap would be unkind for someone worried about losing his hair; but it could be funny for someone with very thick hair who often complains about it. Gifts given on a serious or public occasion should not be overly rude. ______40______
A. Being useful is often expected.
B. But that is not their main purpose.
C. Otherwise the recipient may feel offended.
D. In this way, the gift appears to be more valuable.
E. Gag gifts can be almost anything that is meant for fun.
F. Gags related to someone’s special talents are often a big hit.
G. When the gift is opened, it may bring a laugh from the crowd.

Have you ever taken a personality test? If you’re like me, you’ve consulted BuzzFeed to discover which Taylor Swift song perfectly matches your soul. _____36_____ But even some “serious” personality tests used to guide educational and career choices are also problematic. They assume your personality is fixed—implying you’re forever stuck with the personality you’re born with.
But modern personality research suggests that personality can and does change over time. _____37_____ If you shift your mindset to believe that “being on time shows respect”, take pride in arriving early, and develop consistent habits like setting an alarm, you are changing. If you maintain these changes in your thoughts, emotions and behaviors over time—voila!—you are reliable. Personality: changed.
Data confirms this idea. Generally, personality changes across a person’s life span. As people age, they tend to experience fewer negative emotions and more positive ones. They are more responsible, more positive, and are less judgmental of others. _____38_____ You can accelerate this transformation through intentional cognitive-behavioral changes.
First, you must examine your thinking patterns. For example, if you believe that “people only care about themselves,” you are more likely to act defensively. This leads to the second step: changing your behavior. If you are always defensive, others might snap at you or walk away. This only confirms your belief that you can’t trust others. _____39_____ If you try behaving more openly—perhaps sharing your difficulties with a co-worker—you may see that they respond with kindness. This positive experience helps change your outlook.
In the end, these strategies work because your personality is simply your usual way of thinking and acting. _____40_____
A. To break this cycle, try a new response.
B. But you don’t have to wait for time to do the work.
C. Suppose, for instance, you’re not super dependable.
D. It might be obvious that such quizzes are not scientific.
E. Some people change a lot and some people hold pretty steady.
F. You may believe they describe you accurately, even when they don’t.
G. By making small, daily changes, you can craft the personality you desire.

Have you ever found yourself lost in a book, turning pages without really processing the words? It happens to the best of us. ______36______ For them, reading isn’t just about understanding the text, it’s about thinking critically, making connections, and engaging with what they’re reading. This is where questioning techniques come into play in reading instruction.
At its core, questioning techniques are strategies used to inspire readers to think critically about what they are reading. ______37______ Just like how exercise strengthens muscles, asking questions while reading strengthens comprehension skills. It pushes readers to not only understand the story but to analyze it, evaluate it, and sometimes even challenge it.
______38______ The types of questions asked can vary depending on the level of engagement required. There are easy literal questions that ask for information directly from the text and also inferential and evaluative questions that require readers to read between the lines. There are even predictive questions that encourage readers to make predictions about what will happen next. ______39______ But together, they create a rich, engaging reading experience that goes beyond just decoding words on a page.
You might be wondering, “Why does this matter?” Can’t students just read and understand on their own? Well, the truth is, reading is more than just recognizing words. ______40______ In a world overloaded with information, teaching students how to think critically about what they read is more important than ever. Questioning techniques in reading instruction provide students with the tools they need to become thoughtful, engaged, and reflective readers.
A. Each type serves a different purpose.
B. It’s about making sense of those words.
C. Of course, all questions aren’t created equal.
D. They can totally transform the reading experience.
E. But imagine students who are just learning to read.

How to Set Boundaries and Build Better Relationships
In any kind of relationship, boundaries can allow both people involved to understand how the other person wants to be treated. Establishing and respecting boundaries can be a key part of a strong, healthy relationship. _____36_____ Here, we’ll offer a few tips to help you get started.
Start small
You don’t need to set big boundaries all at once. _____37_____ After setting small boundaries, you can ask yourself: Are you heading in the right direction? Have things in your relationship improved with these small boundaries? Do you need to go further?
_____38_____
Whether you make a new friend, start a new job, or meet a new romantic partner, try to set your boundaries and expectations from the very beginning. While you can establish boundaries in an existing relationship, it can sometimes be challenging for you and the other person to change. By putting boundaries in place at the beginning, everyone knows where they stand from the start.
Let others know they cross your boundaries
_____39_____ If someone crosses one of your boundaries, you can speak up and communicate to them that you feel uncomfortable. For example, if you have told a friend that there is a certain topic you don’t feel comfortable talking about, but they keep asking you about it, you can consider saying something like, “I don’t feel comfortable talking about that. Can we talk about something else?”
Respect and appreciate other people’s boundaries
If you want others to respect your boundaries, it's important to respect their boundaries as well. It wouldn’t bee fair to disregard someone else’s boundaries but then expect them to honor yours. _____40_____

In an era of information explosion, many people tend to accept what they see or hear without thinking, while a few others are labeled as “contrarians(叛逆的人)” just because they question everything. This has become a common social phenomenon. _____36_____ In fact, it is a core cognitive(认知的)ability.
Questioning everything is the essence of critical thinking. _____37_____ For example, when we are told a certain food is “extremely harmful”, critical thinking does not immediately deny it. Instead, it encourages us to ask: What is the source of this claim? Is there scientific evidence to support it? Are there any conflicting studies? It is not about being negative, but about seeking objective evidence.
_____38_____ Some people fall into the trap of cognitive biases without realizing it. They may refuse to accept new information that goes against their existing beliefs. These biases are so common that most people are unaware of their existence, and critical thinking is the key to recognizing and overcoming them.
However, critical thinking is not an inborn talent as many people believe, but a skill that can be trained and improved through daily practice. _____39_____ When having a discussion with others, listen to opposing views carefully instead of interrupting immediately. Every time we actively challenge our own thinking, we are polishing our critical thinking ability. With consistent practice, this ability will become an essential part of our thinking.
In a world where misinformation spreads faster than ever, critical thinking is no longer a “bonus skill” for a few people. _____40_____ It allows us to stand firm in the tide of information, and to live and think as an independent individual.
A. We can start with small things.
B. Cognitive ability also requires logical reasoning.
C. It starts with the willingness to question assumptions.
D. It is a necessary ability for everyone to survive and thrive.
E. Critical thinking also requires us to avoid cognitive biases.
F. This is why many people stick to wrong views unconsciously.
G. Critical thinking is often undervalued in such a social context.

Clutter(杂物)is rarely a single simple problem. While we easily throw away old newspapers or broken devices, we often struggle with a trickier category aspirational(憧憬的)clutter. These are the items we keep because they represent a version of ourselves we wish to be—the chef who never cooks, the athlete with a dusty running machine, or the reader with stacks of untouched books.
_____36_____ It acts as a constant background noise whispering, “I should be doing more.” Dealing with this clutter requires distinguishing between “not now” and “not me”. Items in the “not now” category represent paused goals we truly intend to restart. _____37_____ Letting go of the latter often reveals that much of what we own belongs to a person who simply doesn’t exist anymore.
To transition from aspiration to reality, experts suggest “containing the dream”. Every aspirational category gets exactly one container. _____38_____ Furthermore, if you cannot find twenty minutes a week to use that equipment or read those books, the item should not occupy space in your home.
The emotional difficulty of parting with these objects often stems from grief over unfulfilled intentions. When the break feels hard, you are suggested asking, “Who was I when I bought this, and who did I hope to become?” _____39_____ Getting rid of a set of unused wine glasses might feel like a loss, but it is actually an act of evolution.
Ultimately, letting go transforms your home from a storage unit for unfulfilled dreams into a support system for your current life. _____40_____
A. Aspirational clutter carries a quiet pressure.
B. Acknowledging these feelings is essential for relief.
C. It is better to store these items out of sight to reduce guilt.
D. You should never keep items that remind you of past failures
E. Clearing the “not me” pile can really simplify your environment.
F. By contrast, “not me” items belong to past selves that no longer fit.
G. If it doesn’t fit, you must choose your favorites and throw away the rest.

A Piece of Cake
From sharing a tasty snack to allocating(分配)resources between nations, having a strategy to divide things fairly will make everyone happier. But it gets complicated when things aren’t indistinguishable substances. _____36_____ Luckily, maths has some ideas.
When splitting between two parties, you might know a simple and mathematically optimal(最优的)rule: I cut, you choose. Since the person cutting the cake doesn’t choose, they are motivated to cut the cake fairly. Then when the other person chooses, everyone is satisfied. _____37_____ Neither participant can claim they would rather have the other person’s share.
_____38_____ It is more complicated, but still possible, to produce an envy-free allocation with several so-called fair-sharing algorithms.
Let’s say Alex, Blake and Chris are sharing a cake. Alex cuts the cake into three pieces, equal in value to him. Then Blake judges if there are at least two pieces he would be happy with. If Blake says yes, Chris chooses a piece; Blake chooses next, pleased to get one of the two pieces he liked, followed by Alex, who would be satisfied with any of the pieces. If Blake doesn’t think Alex’s split was fair, Chris looks to see if there are two pieces he would take. _____39_____
If both Blake and Chris reject Alex’s initial chop, then there must be at least one piece they both thought was no good. This piece goes to Alex. _____40_____ The remaining two pieces are back together to create one piece of cake for Blake and Chris-to perform the rule “I cut, you choose” on.
So whatever is being shared, maths can help prevent arguments.
A. What if there are more people?
B. If not, Chris cuts the remaining pieces.
C. They take turns to pick their favorite piece.
D. If yes, Blake picks first, then Chris, then Alex.
E. This results in what is called an envy-free allocation.
F. He is still happy, because he thought the pieces were all fine:
G. For example, cake pieces with cherries on top seem more desirable.
